  • Queen Victoria visited Floors Castle on the River Tweed, Scotland, for three days in 1867.
It was the first official visit that Victoria made after the death of her beloved husband Prince Albert, and Tim discovers in her diary that, despite the passage of six years, she still felt Albert's loss keenly. She wrote in her account that the 'feeling of loneliness when I saw no room for my darling, and felt I was indeed alone and a widow, overcame me very sadly! I thought so much of all dearest Albert would have done and said, and how he would have wandered about everywhere, admired everything, looked at everything - and now! Oh! Must it ever, ever be so?'

I love Victoria & Albert enjoying each other their love at first sight, his death broke her heart, she pulled herself together in the face of tragedy, as all really great Ladys ❤️

Except she didn't and she almost caused an administrative paralysis of the state because she couldn't be bothered to get herself off the bed to sign some very important and urgent documents etc. weeks and months after Albert's death still.

Her immense grief being so pronounced in her diaries certainly humanize her much more. On the outside she seems very intimidating but her never ending love for Albert just breaks my heart. She carries on despite her pain, I find it inspiring. Its tragic given how much they loved each other and they barely got to enjoy their short time together since she was pregnant so quickly and so often.

Ok, but…the green herbed butter used in that dish had garlic listed as one of the ingredients, which sounds delicious to me, but I distinctly remember in a previous video in this series that Queen Victoria did not eat garlic, and even had it listed as a food that she would not eat when she went visiting places away from her home!!! ???

I've read that her son, Leopold, loved them, they were plentiful and often cooked as edible garnish. He died young, age 30, but had a wife and 2 children and I believe it is the oldest daughter , Princess Alice of Albany, that wrote most about her father.

I get being devastated by the loss of someone very dear to you. I am a bit confused as to why the public and politicians were seemingly unconcerned with having a leader so in their feelings that they checked out for 6 years, not months, years. I've never lived under a monarch so maybe that's why I don't understand this.

She was working, but, only in private. The public parts of her life/duties were what she largely did not do for those years. I believe she still attended opening of Parliament and those very large duties, but, even those are fairly private being just Her and the Parliament. She didn't travel or appear in public though.

My word, Victoria was so self centered. I've already heard the story of her almost paralyzing the government of Britain by refusing to fulfill even her most urgent duties weeks and months after Albert's death still because of her ostentatious mourning. And then showing a total lack of compassion and understanding to one of her daughters losing her beloved spouse a number of years later.
But that horrid bracelet with the gloomy dedication is absolutely ridiculous. She even managed to make a gift to that woman be all about herself and her grief. I really thought a royal would be raised better than to do something as rude and thoughtless as that. If I was the recipient I would throw that thing somewhere where I'd never have to look at it again and then donate to the first charity auction to just get rid of it.

Those would likely have been removed by the same staff preparing each diner's serving tableside. For almost as long as nobility had private chefs, they've also had private "put food on plate"ers.
