    Honestly, this was very well done. They did an excellent job showing the bitterness and anger Burr felt and the actors overall were very talented. Excellent performance.

    If you pay attention to the letters it becomes obvious that Hamilton didn't have the decency to disavow or take responsibility for the things he said about Burr. In fact, he had been saying those things or spreading those lies indirectly for years. Burr had finally had enough.
    The idea that Hamilton was opposed to dueling is laughable. He challenged something like a dozen other men to duels in his lifetime per the Smithsonian. In fact, Hamilton almost had a duel with James Monroe, but he was talked out of it by none other than Aaron Burr. It was Burr who had never challenged anyone else to a duel prior to Hamilton.
    Hamilton owned his own set of dueling pistols, of which at least one had a secret set trigger for more accurate fire. Men who owned those sorts of weapons ordinarily weren't opposed to dueling. These were the pistols used in Weehawken that day. Since Hamilton was the one who had been challenged he had the right to select the weapons. Did Hamilton use the set trigger in an attempt to cheat? Did it backfire on him because he was too nervous to use it properly? Set triggers are best used on the target range unless you have very steady nerves.
    When Hamilton writes that he intends to waste his fire because he doesn't want to kill Burr, he is of course full of it. He hated Burr and wanted nothing more than to kill him. Of course, he would have preferred to destroy Burr's career without actually placing himself at risk. If Hamilton had killed Burr you can rest assured the letter avowing that he would waste his shot never would have seen the light of day.
    Alexander Hamilton was the worst kind of political scum. Unfortunately history is often written by scum for the benefit of scum. You can decry the foolishness of dueling all you want, but it forced Hamilton to take the responsibility that he had previously refused to take.

    • @killcancer6499
      @killcancer6499 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My memory appears to have been mistaken regarding the ownership of the dueling pistols in question. Apparently they were owned by Hamilton's brother in law.
      Hamilton, however, was the one who supplied the pistols for the duel with his brother in law's approval. The question is was he aware of the set trigger and did he make use of it. It is almost inconceivable that his brother in law didn't tell him about the trigger.
      Hamilton, however, was hot tempered and did challenge a number of other men to duels.
      The book "Fallen Founder: The Life of Aaron Burr" by Isenberg is a good reference.

    • @missdancefan
      @missdancefan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, as I said, the pistols were own by Church. Hamilton was the challenged and they usually get to provide the weapons. Though Phillip Hamilton also used these same pistols and he was the challenger.
      Alexander Hamilton knew about the hair-spring trigger. His second, Pendleton's account in the New York post on July 19th 1804 mentioned asking Hamilton if he wanted it set and Hamilton said not this time.
      Hamilton treated duels/affairs of Honors as legal or arbitration events. He had a Temper but for him it was about his belief in his own ability to use facts and legal arguments to uphold his honor. Hamilton is the type of person who believed he was always in the right and if people would take the time to read or listen to his argument or presentation then they would see how in the right Hamilton was.

    • @killcancer6499
      @killcancer6499 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@missdancefan I am sorry if didn't see all of your previous reply. I think it is crap that Hamilton believed only in using reason and facts in demonstrating that he was right. If that were true, he wouldn't have challenged so many other men to duels. Duels were about upholding your honor with steel when verbal arguments were over. Make no mistake, it was Hamilton who was usually the challenger.
      As I said, If you pay attention to the letters read here it will become apparent to anyone that Hamilton was refusing to take responsibility for or disavow his accusations, public or surreptitious, against Burr. What he does is play meaningless word games, the kind games men without character play. The kind of games that are easy to see through unless you don't want to.
      I have yet to read two accounts of that duel which agree on all the key elements. It is possible that Pendleton asked him if wanted to use the set option and he declined. I have read this version. It is not contained in any other version.
      There are reasons to doubt Pendleton's account. For example, after Hamilton's death a letter is produced which announces Hamilton's intention to throw his shot. If you read the account of Burr's second you will see that he claims Hamilton put on his spectacles and took practice aiming as he was looking into the sun. All he needed to do in order to throw his shot was to fire into the ground. That was customary and safer.
      Burr's second writes that Hamilton fired first and his shot hit the branches in a tree above Burr's head. That is consistent with being a little too quick with or jerking the trigger. That could easily happen with a set trigger under the stress of a duel.
      I don't believe Pendleton because Hamilton himself was liar. Everything was done to carefully preserve Hamilton's reputation and destroy Burr's in the event that Hamilton was killed. Hamilton devoted a good deal of his adult life to destroying the career of Aaron Burr. Burr was an honorable man.

    • @killcancer6499
      @killcancer6499 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@missdancefan I wish I was able to read your entire reply. For some reason it doesn't seem to display in its entirety. I do have some technical difficulties which are probably all my fault.
      If you are saying that we can both believe or not any of the accounts of what occurred at Weehawken you are obviously correct. I obviously think there are good reasons to infer that Pendleton was a lying though.
      Isenberg also does an excellent job of documenting the less than admirable conduct that marked the adult career of Alexander Hamilton particularly as it regards Burr. I recommend the book.
      I would like to comment on the Reynolds affair. When it appeared that Hamilton's career would be destroyed over the possibility of financial impropriety, he claimed he was making blackmail payments over an illicit affair.
      The interesting thing is that this defense was taken at face value and no further investigation was done. It is possible that Hamilton was both a philanderer and a crook, but nobody looked into that possibility. In all likelihood, having a reason to avoid investigating was a relief to many involved. I suspect the man was a crook.
      The letters leading up to the duel clearly display what I said about them. Burr wanted Hamilton to take responsibility for the things he allegedly said about Burr or disavow them. Hamilton would do neither. What does that say about Hamilton? That was the subject of the video, wasn't it?

    • @parsifal8186
      @parsifal8186 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@killcancer6499 I disagree. I do not think it was so clear cut as this. There doesn't have to be a "villain" or a bad guy. It is very well possible that Hamilton deloped, albeit a bit unusually. That does not necessarily mean that Burr wanted to kill Hamilton or vice versa. I believe this matter is much more nuanced than one of them being a bad person or not. Both had good and bad traits.

    This is not accurate at all. At the dueling site Hamilton acted in a truly bizarre manner, as if he were flustered and scared. Everyone does everything to make Hamilton look good in this duel that he provoked. He had been involved in 12 previous conflicts that should have ended in a duel, but he had always found a way to get out of them. Burr had had enough. Read Burr: American Emperor for a true telling of the duel.

    Historian: "BURR vs HAMILTON: (The Duel). Normally, in duels, you walk off ten steps, (which they did), present as low an outline as possible to your opponent, wait for a last-minute apology/concession, then fire at will (flag drop). This evidently went down. The two main eye-witness accounts vary because they were offered later by the two "Seconds" of Burr and Hamilton. It's generally acknowledged that Hamilton fired first - or at least initiated the simultaneous shots. The surviving pistols showed evidence that Hamilton had "doctored" the pistols that "he" himself brought. He chose the modified pistol with a "hair-trigger." Regardless, Hamilton's shot missed Burr, hitting a tree. Hamiltonians would have us believe that it was a "deliberate" miss-shot fired into the air. If this were true, then why did Hamilton put his glasses on before firing his pistol? Burr's shot shattered Hamilton's wrist before ricocheting into his right-side abdomen, piercing his liver and lodging in his spine. Hamilton's wrist could not have been raised in the air with this result.
    Dueling was against the law at this time, punishable by death in New York, so the two duelists carried out their archaic settlement on the shores of New Jersey. Interestingly, during this illegal act, Hamilton's Second was District Court "Judge" Nathaniel Pendleton. Hamilton provided both pistols, the same pair used when his son lost his own life in a duel three years earlier - at the same location. Hamilton was not "murdered." He might have been a victim of his own tampering - or, he was just a bad shot - even with his glasses on."

    IT THE 10 DUEL COMANDINTS

  • @A.Ham1757
    @A.Ham1757 ปีที่แล้ว

    We will never know what truly happened in the duel - all we do know is that Hamilton missed and Burr didn’t.
    Read Burr’s side, read Alexander’s side, choose who to believe but don’t be coming here stating that Hamilton shot at Burr because you don’t know that for sure.
    With such a tragic event, eye witness accounts can have gaps and the hatred between the 2 could have sparked lies. It states the sides could never agree on what happened at the intervene stage.
    Evidence for both sides is present on whether Hamilton shot at Burr or not - but you cannot say what’s true and what’s not. When it comes to history, there will always be debates on if something was true or not. But never can you be 100% certain on history that happened behind closed doors.

    Actually Hamilton put his gun to the sky

      Bowen Man That's not historically accurate. He didn’t quite aim towards the sky. He most likely aimed to miss Burr, though.

      @@blueflare3848 Blue Flare There's no confirmed answer.
      Most sources say that Hamilton didn't shoot at Burr and shot at the ground, to the side or towards the sky.
      While other sources say that he shoot at Burr and missed.
      From what Hamilton says here though 12:32 it's sounds like he didn't aimed at Burr in my opinion.

    • @blueflare3848
      @blueflare3848 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mia The scenario I hear the most is that Hamilton aimed above Burr and hit a tree behind him. But yeah, it sucks that there's no confirmed answer. Unfortunately, we'll probably never know what happened for sure. All we know is that Hamilton most likely intended not to hit Burr.

    • @user-rh4vi1wr4m
      @user-rh4vi1wr4m 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blueflare3848 I've heard of that one as well. It is ashamed that we don't have a confirmed answer. As I said in my previous comment though at 12:32 it sound like he wasn't going to shoot at Burr.
      As well I learned from a source that Hamilton told his son Philip not too shoot Eacker because of Religious reasons. So it would add up for Hamilton not wanting to shoot Burr.
      So I believe that Hamilton didn't shoot at Burr.
      As also to add on to what the op was saying about Hamilton aiming his gun towards the sky. That was just for the play most likely, since it would be hard for the audience to read what was happening in the scene if Hamilton was aiming at the ground or at a tree, since the audience might think he was aimming at Burr.

    To reprint a letter that he sent in confidence
    He claims that on numerous occasions
    You have called me "a dangerous man"
    Furthermore I "ought not be trusted with the reins of government"
    Obviously such an accusation must be met with either an immediate acknowledgement or disavowal

    it is obvious that Hamilton was an idiot, thinking an American would fall for the rhetoric of an Englishman... but of course Hamilton never understood this,,,, and the lead hit its target. but though an idiot ,,, he was not by any means a coward... I have always found it hard to deal with Hamilton … his politics and European ideas which were so against American ways and his pure bravery.. no doubt he was a man... just mislead.

      kingslegion1 Very well-thought out. These men clashed in many different ways where Burr’s ideologies were different from Hamilton and they both come from different socioeconomic backgrounds.
