Yeah, I know. My use of that clip is just showing that Eliza is associated with the motif "Helpless." It was not me trying to say that that song was "Helpless." There is only so much footage out there of the show, so it is hard to find good clips that perfectly line up with a point. For example, the clip I use of Washington a few seconds later is from "Right Hand Man," not "History Has its Eyes on You." Because Lin has not released the whole show, it is slim pickings out here. With that said, I liked using the clip from "Burn" because it does signify the point in the show where Eliza stops being helpless and takes actual action.

Razbuten that's exactly how I feel, great job with the voiceover btw and this was a great refresher for your channel, I enjoyed it and it flowed together nicely overall, I could tell this took time and I'm glad you decided to post it after all amazing work👏
Great video! I’d noticed about the internal rhymes and repetitions but hadn’t really thought about the development of meaning. Repeating phrases with altering meaning is something I like in films, tv and novels, so of course in something as text-heavy as a hip hop musical it has even greater potential, and they exploited that fully.
Hamilton got me into history and musicals, I've heard too much horrible mainstream rap from my country that one musical could redeem it for me, but it helped me get a more open mind for rap and hip hop again. It's really amazing, to be honest. On it's own I don't like any of it's components, but I somehow ended up loving the musical anyway.
I wondered about this too, at first, but as I got into other musicals, I realized that it's pretty much a normal thing with musicals for them to have really bizarre premises. Take some of the most popular ones: Wicked is basically Oz fanfiction, Cats is about cats?, The Sound of Music is about Nazis and nuns and children, The Lion King is Hamlet with animals, Phantom of the Opera is about a weird obsessive reclusive dude who sings lots in a basement, Chicago is about female murderers and jazz, Les Mis is about sad people and one tiny unsuccessful barricade in the French revolution.
This is a very good point. I think the stranger part about this one is that most of the songs are not in that typical "broadway" style. But yeah, musicals are bat shit crazy.
I love your deep analyses of momentos of pop culture, picking them apart and combining them into a new, unified narrative. And I really like your voice and style of speaking. This time, you chose a musical that deeply affected my first six month of this year (to a point where I can sing along to every song at least by rhythm and melody, if not by text), and allowed me to share its essence to my friends, of whom I know no bigger fan of this musical. Subscribing to your channel was the best choice I've made on TH-cam for a long time. Thank you so much for all the effort you put into your every video.
Thank you for the kind words. While these last two videos have been a departure from what I started with, both Avatar and Hamilton have literally changed how I look at life, and I think art that special deserves to be talked about. I don't cry a ton, but Hamilton has brought me to tears many times in my life, so I really just needed to talk about it.
I initially subscribed after I saw your video on Avatar and hoped you would make more videos like this. Naturally, I watched your other videos immediately after that and found that those that I watched (I guess 15 of your 18 videos if I remember correctly 3 months later - talking about lasting impressions) really confirmed my subscription choice. Heck, I almost bought a Nintendo Switch for the sole purpose of playing Breath of the Wild after seeing your video (being the RPG enthusiast that I am, fully trusting in your judgement). Oh, and I can absolutely relate to your sentiment that you don't cry a lot, except for Hamilton. Long story short: Please keep up the exceptional work. If you ever establish a Patreon page I will finally create a Patreon account, just to redirect some funds to you. :)
I have been jamming to those super hard over the past few weeks. Thank you so much for all of the kind words and support. Honestly, I was super terrified to post this video, and knowing that it has connected with you is super validating and relieving. I appreciate you.
Hazel Grey there is also 21 Chump Street, another musical by Lin. It’s short, but it has Anthony Ramos, who played Lauren’s/Philip in Hamilton and is starring in the Heights musical movie. Of course, I also suggest other Beautiful musicals such as Hadestown (it’s amazing) and the Great Comet which had a tragic and unfair closing on Broadway.
At first, I loved Hamilton because of how catchy it was. Then I appreciated the deep story, the characters, and how I suddenly deeply cared about names that I learned from a textbook. But rather than getting tired of Hamilton, I just saw more and more depth in it, appreciating each song more than I had the last time a heard it. Burr shows everything I love about the musical. He is an incredible villain but he never stopped feeling like a genuinely decent and understandable person. Room Where It Happens is the catchiest song in the musical, with blues, a full orchestra and the repetition. But after listening to the musical a few times, you can pinpoint this song as Burr's breaking point, where he'll take risks like Hamilton but still keep his beliefs ambiguous. And this is only enriched when you realize that this is what happened historically, feeding into me caring for long dead historical figures.
Awesome! Wow! I'm very familiar with Hamilton, and I thought this was an excellent critique. It even showed me rhymes I hadn't realized. (That "street is" rhymes with "Jesus"!) Well done!
I knew this play was well loved, and seeing this now makes me understand why now. You now convinced me to really see this show, although going to see one now is nigh impossible. I guess I'll have to do with listening to the soundtrack for now. :\ Regardless, glad to see you branching out a bit Raz.
Its better than that. Its a Unicornsparklecreamshake, the dream of every musical friend. (When you drink it, youll be completely Satisfied.) The tasty dessert was eaten by many people over the world and has a small topping on it. Whipped Tears of the audience. Un deux trois...
Seeing all these snippets of illegal bootlegs made me even more excited (which I didn't think possible) for seeing Hamilton in *checks countdown calendar on phone* TWELVE DAYS LETS GOOOOOOOO
These actually aren't bootlegged! They did an official recording with the original cast, but it has not been released in its entirety. However, there was a documentary called Hamilton's America that is half about the development of the show and half about Hamilton himself, and they used some of the clips from the recording in that documentary. So that is where a lot of the footage is from. The documentary is great, so you should check it out. ALSO. ENJOY THE HELL OUT OF THE SHOW. AS MUCH AS YOU MAY LOVE IT ON THE CAST RECORDING, SEEING IT IN PERSON BRINGS AN ALL NEW MAGIC TO IT.
I have been in love with the musical Hamilton for 4 years and I usually get tired off musicals but this one will always have a special place in my heart❤
Extremely well done video! Brought out a lot of points and fun facts that I didn’t know about - even though I’ve been listening to Hamilton non stop for over a year now!
I saw it in Chicago for a decent price (around 100), but I was able to buy it from the theater and not on resale (which is what actually makes things terribly expensive).
I didn't know anything about the play, other than it was popular. But it sounds a lot more interesting now that I have a good sense of what it is, and why it's a hit. Great video!
I neither like musicals nor Hip Hop but here I am... watching a 10 minute video about it. You have an amazing voice, your texts are very well written and you got so much better in cutting. I would prefer new gaming related videos but man, I would watch everything from you!
I appreciate that! Gaming stuff is definitely not going away, but this video was complete and just sitting around, so I figured I would put it here. I think the dream is to cover a variety of topics AND do it far more frequently.
holy crap make this video again but 7 hours long and i would watch it every day! i can have a hard time watching "long" videos but this was just informative, fun, and captivating, even for someone who has listened to the album a million times and read so much about it!! the clips, editing, information just worked so well together! :)
Love the mix of genres. It gives the characters their own voices. The choreography is amazing. Every element is intentional. A masterpiece. Great review.
Honestly, Hamilton is so good because it has so much people can relate to in it. It's doesn't matter that it happened so long ago, the character are just so HUMAN that you can't help but love it. It's realistic and it tugs at all the right emotions so it's can't help but be great.
I know that when I first watched it, I wasn't too thrilled. I thought it was too similar to Les Mis, I wasn't a fan of the production and set design, and I didn't pay too close attention to the songs, though I did think "You'll Be Back" was kind of fun and catchy. It was really busy and at times hard to follow. Then over a year later, I listened to the cast album while watching animatics, fully engrossing myself with what I was seeing, and it finally clicked with me. I ended up crying at the end, maybe not for the same reasons others did, but I got just as emotional as I did seeing Les Mis the first time with a professional cast (I first experienced it at my high school as a stage crew, not a good vantage point, but I did like it. Then the next time was the 10th anniversary concert). Pretty soon, I found myself singing the songs at random times throughout the days, getting lost in cast videos on youtube, and actually thinking about trying to get tickets someday. I realized this musical has now given me the same feelings I had with Les Mis, and I liked it rather than be repulsed by it. I get it now.
I've liked musicals for a while, but haven't been watching many as of late, and therefore haven't seen Hamilton yet. This video was super well done and convicted me to see Hamilton as well as binge a bunch of other musicals. Great video!
Definitely worth your time. As far as others, I've been obsessing over Heathers: The Musical for the past week or so, and that is another example of a show that should be terrible but actually works super well.
To be honest, i got into Hamilton from my sister. She played it and i fell in love with it. I hadnt been interested in history or musicals until that point but Hamilton catapulted me into a live for both of those (i didnt say hip hop because i was already in a hip hop group for 2 years). That is why hamilton is dear in my heart, it introduced me to worlds of knowlede and interests.
And it may be useful to also mention the obvious: that it has also caught on so well because its quality is excellent! Great writing, music, drama, dancing, structure, etc.
I'm not even American or have been to America, but the soundtrack is my and my little sister's jam. She can even rap Angelica's parts. I get teary-eyed every time I listen to Satisfied or Dear Theodosia.
Even though this video is a bit different than your other videos, I really enjoyed watching it. I heard from Hamilton but I didn't know it's such a big thing in America, so it was really interesting to listen to you :>
It has gotten to the point here where almost every sitcom has a shoehorned joke about it being hard to get tickets for Hamilton. If that isn't making it in America, I honestly don't know what is!
What the actual heck? If you haven't seen the musical on Disney+ yet or something else, you can't say it's overrated. I hate people who say something GOOD is overrated just because it's getting the recognition it deserves.
@@sleepyexe644 my guy, he is saying that he doesn't think the musical is overrated , because he doesn't know anyone who knows what hamilton is. you're getting offended over something he didn't say or mean. lmao
I've never heard of Hamilton until today, and I'd have to say it looks extremely overrated. It seems everyone wants to go see it simply because "everyone wants to go see it". Herd mentality. The "me too" bandwagon makes me want to walk the other way.
Doug S You have to look into it before you judge it. Everyone loves it for a reason. It's inspiring, beautiful, original and has a deep meaning behind it. It celebrates America, and the cast is so diverse. It took years to write and each line is perfectly crafted. Maybe give the soundtrack a listen sometime.
Rachel Marie wouldn't say it's original by any means. Historical Rap has been around since the 80's-90's. It's just one of those things people rave about because it's popular, it's the same reason shows like Jersey Shore got talked about to no end or everyone went around pointing at shoes saying "what are those!". I saw some werido lady/man just jamming out to it in traffic just headbanging, screaming at the top of their lungs and it made me understand better seeing who the audience is as to why it was popular. It's rap music for people who don't like rap. I listened to it and it's laughable, it's a parody.
Captain Mutato I'll admit, a lot of the people who likeut are a little insane but for me its not just the way the music sounds. its about the story, the history, and the diversity of the cast. i think its a beautuful thing. but i dint think a lot of the people who see hamilton see the deeper meaning and the beauty behind the catchy music.
I’ve been watching a few of your videos (they’re great) and it’s amazing that you made a video about one of my favourite musicals, this video is certainly enough to ‘Satisfy’ me!
i love how intertwined it is in real rap and hiphop culture, and how my shot is basically lose yourself. its awesome how they teach you something new while holding your hand and giving you a feeling of familiarness.
So... i love hamilton so much... and im not even American... but the thing is my friends... well... umm... they kinda hate it even before they give a try to listen to it a little bit... so basically im going to show my friends this video so they can finally know why its awesome
Just saw Hamilton last night myself on Disney Plus and this video sums up my feelings on it quite well. It was so much fun to watch, and the music is so catchy......
2 things: 1" I could only listen to the Cast Recording since I don't want to move out of Canada for a show, but I have to say Hamilton has been my favourite musical so far. 2. The ending of this video is so satisfying holy hell
-Anyone- *Everyone* Also, this video is an outstanding reason on why you should listen to this! I have been listening to Hamilton since 2018, but I first heard it in 2016. My elementary school did a short show for Veteran's Day and I ignored the amazing music. Soon later, in 2018, my soon best friend wouldn't stop talking about the show. I eventually decided to listen to it. Now, here we are, in 2019, while I know *majority* of the songs. So many humans love this. The genres are incredible when they mix together. Even today, my best friend, (lets call her K) had her mom come to lunch, and we were chatting about my journey into Hamilton. K had already known some of this, and her mom was grateful. Lin-Manuel, you have created something no one, and I mean *no one* will forget or take for granted. We love you, Lin. Keep doing what you are doing.
Just think like this: you aren’t cringy for liking Hamilton, everybody else is cringy because they *dont* like Hamilton Also they don’t know to live LIKE HOW DO YOU LIVE WITHOUT HAMILTON

I'm just a girl from central Europe who never got a chance to see the musical, but I'm so proud of these people. I can't even count how many times I've listened to the whole thing. It's so damn good!
Very well said! The only reason why I started to appreciate rapping was because of Hamilton, so your comment about this show making ppl appreciate Hip Hop more is quite correct!
I took my mum to this because I didn't want to go alone and she was like I know I'm going to not like this. In the middle of the first song she turned to me and whispered 'it's really good!" she gushed about it for weeks lol

Step 10: Wait impatiently for the original casts' Hamilton performace to be released on DVD just like Lin promised but it's likely that that's not gonna happen in the next 10 years.
Yep
you just described my life perfectly
This video made me fall in love with the musical again
Honestly, I often forget how good this show is. Then I listen to any song from it and lose my mind again.
Things I dislike:
-hip hop
-rap
-history
Things I love
-Hamilton
Ya catch my drift?
Bro I've never been able to relate more to a comment in my life. Hamilton has all the things I hate in it but I love it so much
lol
@@NicoleMP885 yep. Idk how, it just does
Hamilton got me into rap ngl
Cats is a failure
@@Aryan_Karadkar He's referring to the stage version, which is one of the longest-running musicals of all time.
What about Starlight Express, which features performers on roller skates portraying toy trains that are inside a boy's dream?
Oh, and thanks for implicitly pointing out that there is an instrumental version of it now. :D
I have been jamming to those super hard over the past few weeks.
Thank you so much for all of the kind words and support. Honestly, I was super terrified to post this video, and knowing that it has connected with you is super validating and relieving. I appreciate you.
Great video, man! :) In the Heights is also worth looking into for anyone who appreciates the talent and music behind Hamilton.
Ahhhh I love that show. I saw Hamilton in Chicago and Karen Olivo (Vanessa in In The Heights) was Angelica, and she stole my entire heart.
I am not that surprised that trump hates hamilton
SOULLESS SOULLESS
Well real life Alexander Hamilton was an asshat who goes against everything the U.S stands for
Chara Hey if you don’t know now you know George Washington 😂

They’re called slant rhymes and they are used by all mediocre lyricists.
I knew this play was well loved, and seeing this now makes me understand why now. You now convinced me to really see this show, although going to see one now is nigh impossible. I guess I'll have to do with listening to the soundtrack for now. :\
Regardless, glad to see you branching out a bit Raz.
th-cam.com/video/4CC2003oOpM/w-d-xo.html thank me later
Is it the chocolate milk of musicals?
Its better than that.
Its a Unicornsparklecreamshake, the dream of every musical friend.
(When you drink it, youll be completely Satisfied.)
The tasty dessert was eaten by many people over the world and has a small topping on it.
Whipped Tears of the audience.

Alexdre Hamiltrash I'm never satisfied
Alexander Hamilton
FIGHT ME
I don't think you should say that. You know he will!
I hate chocolate milk so no.
Razbuten Thanks for replying! and haha i didn’t know about that documentary, that’s so cool! And thank you thank you i will enjoy it i’m so excited!
I was never a history fan, a hip-hop fan, or even a musical fan. But when I listened to Hamilton, man I was obsessed
I have been in love with the musical Hamilton for 4 years and I usually get tired off musicals but this one will always have a special place in my heart❤
Beautiful, well made video. Absolutely perfect.
Good job, man.
6:56 Thomas running around with "what did I miss" playing is the best
Extremely well done video! Brought out a lot of points and fun facts that I didn’t know about - even though I’ve been listening to Hamilton non stop for over a year now!
Hamilton: a musical for anyone, unless you cant afford it, cause tickets go for like 2500 maybe more.
Shiiiiit. You ain’t even wrong.
Unless you win the lottery
I saw it in Chicago for a decent price (around 100), but I was able to buy it from the theater and not on resale (which is what actually makes things terribly expensive).
I found tickets in London for 37 or 57
You just gotta buy early
It's also just written so damn well. The irony, foreshadowing, characterization, and already mentioned the motifs are just so brilliantly intertwined.
Well, I guess I’m gonna have to check out Hamilton. ALSO JESSE DID A V GOOD JOB WITH THE EDITS!!!
The boy deserves an Emmy tbh fam
1 year later have you listened
I didn't know anything about the play, other than it was popular. But it sounds a lot more interesting now that I have a good sense of what it is, and why it's a hit. Great video!
Too bad the tickets are 300-3,000 dollars on Broadway
Well in Chicago they are only 150-1500 dollars so ha ha ha...rip wallet
Good thing theres animatics.
Just you wait, just you wait.
Wait till the show is on Tour the cast will be different but the tickets will be way cheaper lol.
Rackergen nice. (☞゚ヮ゚)☞
I don’t care about history, I don’t listen to hip hop, and I’ve never listened to a musical before Hamilton
Yet I love Hamilton
Hamilton is coming to Seattle February- March 2018 and it was sold out within a day of opening sales. I wish I could have got them
Love the mix of genres. It gives the characters their own voices. The choreography is amazing. Every element is intentional. A masterpiece.
Great review.
At 9, I loved this musical. At 13, I love this musical. At 20 I will love this musical. At 60, I will love this musical. It is truly timeless
Honestly, Hamilton is so good because it has so much people can relate to in it. It's doesn't matter that it happened so long ago, the character are just so HUMAN that you can't help but love it. It's realistic and it tugs at all the right emotions so it's can't help but be great.
Appreciate the work that went into the writing and editting in this video
I love it! Before I get to that though, I'm gonna spend my day off from classes watching all your videos
This was incredibly well written. Good job
This video is so informative, cohesive, and well-edited. I can't believe it only has 506 likes.
You've earned my subscription, good fellow.
FINALLY a video I can show people when they ask me "what's the big deal with this show?" Great job!
I appreciate that! And you!
"It's overrated"
*there is me who literally doesn't know anyone that even knows what hamilton is*
What the actual heck?
If you haven't seen the musical on Disney+ yet or something else, you can't say it's overrated. I hate people who say something GOOD is overrated just because it's getting the recognition it deserves.
@@sleepyexe644 my guy, he is saying that he doesn't think the musical is overrated , because he doesn't know anyone who knows what hamilton is. you're getting offended over something he didn't say or mean. lmao
Honestly, the way you explain this is so amazing, and i couldn't explain it better myself, despite my internal love for it. Well done, my man.
Jesse's editing was superb on this video and now after all this time, I finally have a want/desire to see/experience Hamilton. Thanks for that Raz.
only DONALD TRUMP would say Hamilton is 'highly overrated'
I've never heard of Hamilton until today, and I'd have to say it looks extremely overrated. It seems everyone wants to go see it simply because "everyone wants to go see it". Herd mentality. The "me too" bandwagon makes me want to walk the other way.
Doug S You have to look into it before you judge it. Everyone loves it for a reason. It's inspiring, beautiful, original and has a deep meaning behind it. It celebrates America, and the cast is so diverse. It took years to write and each line is perfectly crafted. Maybe give the soundtrack a listen sometime.
Thanks, Rachel. I'm sure I'll hear more about it and may change my mind. My mind is open.
Captain Mutato I'll admit, a lot of the people who likeut are a little insane but for me its not just the way the music sounds. its about the story, the history, and the diversity of the cast. i think its a beautuful thing. but i dint think a lot of the people who see hamilton see the deeper meaning and the beauty behind the catchy music.
this is the best summary of Hamilton. I Enjoyed it a lot. Thank you.
This video is wonderful! Seriously, fantastic work, man!
He also references The Last Five Years at the end of Say no to this!! "nobody needs to know" :)
I’ve been watching a few of your videos (they’re great) and it’s amazing that you made a video about one of my favourite musicals, this video is certainly enough to ‘Satisfy’ me!
This made me look at Hamilton in a very different way and I’m glad I found this! I’m subbing
i love how intertwined it is in real rap and hiphop culture, and how my shot is basically lose yourself. its awesome how they teach you something new while holding your hand and giving you a feeling of familiarness.
I got my whole family to like Hamilton
I got my brothers into it
I got two friends obsessed, but none of my family because they like pop more.
Sakareeh same and my friends
That’s impressive tbh, my family thinks I’m silly for being totally obsessed with Hamilton
I'm gonna play the whole album in the car the next time we go to our province 🤣 and force them to like it
So... i love hamilton so much... and im not even American... but the thing is my friends... well... umm... they kinda hate it even before they give a try to listen to it a little bit... so basically im going to show my friends this video so they can finally know why its awesome
Good idea but I don’t have friends to show so it’s not going to work for me
omg this explanation is just as mindblowing as the musical itself.
Just saw Hamilton last night myself on Disney Plus and this video sums up my feelings on it quite well. It was so much fun to watch, and the music is so catchy......
One of the things I love Hamilton for is the capes.
the caPes.
They're beautiful and hilarious.
This is the best video about Hamilton I’ve seen
And then there’s me, singing along to the background music to this video while only half paying attention.
You make the best video essays on youtube.
Thank you for covering my special interest, I’m so happy, my heart it smiling!
2 things:
1" I could only listen to the Cast Recording since I don't want to move out of Canada for a show, but I have to say Hamilton has been my favourite musical so far.
2. The ending of this video is so satisfying holy hell
Wonderfully put together video!
Great job-both the video and analysis.
ohhhh this is such a good work...now we should check again "Hamilton and motifs: Creating emotional paradoxes" by Make Stuff
I don’t hate history
I haven’t ever really listened to hip hop
I don’t really like musicals
*But I love Hamilton*
Ok but who’s here now after watching this on Disney+
I’m about to watch it actually
I've watched it 4 times already
holy shit i got the shivers when you explained how in the hamilton-burr duel they both go completely against their lyrical motifs
A great video diving into Hamilton motifs is Hamilton and Motifs by makes stuff it's a 10/10 video
just found your channel today and I love how you talk about such a variety of stuff in this sophisticated fashion :D
-Anyone- *Everyone*
Also, this video is an outstanding reason on why you should listen to this! Keep doing what you are doing.
terrific summary, thank you!
Razbuten you have answered my question about Hamilton for a year now!
Whenever someone asks me why I love Hamilton, I can't explain it. This video explains exactly why I appreciate this show so much.
Whenever I fell like I'm a cringy kid because I like hamilton, I come back to this video and I always feel better :-)
This is the best comment I have ever gotten.
Just think like this: you aren’t cringy for liking Hamilton, everybody else is cringy because they *dont* like Hamilton
Also they don’t know to live
LIKE HOW DO YOU LIVE WITHOUT HAMILTON
this video is very well put together!
Came for Hamilton, stayed for your channel. Great video!
This is the most Hamilton I'll ever see
WAO- I WAS ALREADY SUBSCRIBED TO YOU THEN I SEE YOUVE DONE ONE WITH HAMILTON-
lol yeah, I know musicals are a little out of my typical wheelhouse, but, like, ya know. I like Hamilton.
@@razbuten I'm surprised you replied to this.. _tight._
Excellent video! Lin Manuel Miranda is a certified genius and absolutely blows my mind. I want to see this on Broadway sooo bad!!!
"Why? Why has this play which seems too specific and too Neish to succeed become so widely excepted?" It slaps.
This is great. I finally got to see Hamilton at the Benedum theater Pittsburgh Pennsylvania on Sunday, January 27, 2019, the 2 o’clock matinee it was absolutely breathtaking if you ever get a chance to see it do not throw away your shot I love Hamilton. Sally Lou
YOUR CONTENT IS SO FRICKIN GOOD GOD DAMN DUDE
Thank you!!!!!
I love this video so much ❤️❤️❤️
🙏
I'm just a girl from central Europe who never got a chance to see the musical, but I'm so proud of these people. I can't even count how many times I've listened to the whole thing. It's so damn good!
Very well said! The only reason why I started to appreciate rapping was because of Hamilton, so your comment about this show making ppl appreciate Hip Hop more is quite correct!
I took my mum to this because I didn't want to go alone and she was like I know I'm going to not like this. In the middle of the first song she turned to me and whispered 'it's really good!"
she gushed about it for weeks lol
Great video man
