I have only used these versions off of ebay for the last 5 or so years. They last just as long and I change my grips every year (at the longest) so I have zero complaints other than having the extra 70 dollars in my pocket.

To be fair, when you don’t have the align grips installed on the club, you can’t feel the ridge stick out. It only “protrudes” when installed.

Hi Simon Really interesting video. I bought some Tour Velvet copies (they didn't have Golf Pride on them) from ebay last year at less than £1 a grip. They too had that distinctive smell, they didn't feel too thin and the grip pattern was identical. They have lasted very well but I will have to replace them sooner than with the real thing.
Without trying to teach you how to suck eggs on grip replacement, but some readers might find it useful, this is an additional step I take when fitting: I sometimes used to find it difficult to get the logo/grip pattern lined up properly, but I eventually worked out that if you make a a sharpie mark on the shaft, using the centre mark on the old grip as a guide before removing it, line up is very easy.

Yep, that's the right answer. I always buy local if I can, even if it costs a little more. I know if there are problems, I can go back to the store and they'll help me out and I'm putting food on the table for that guy and supporting golf in my area.

Get where you are coming from, but when a grip costs £3.50 and most pros will probably charge £8-£9 to do it then that few quid is actually £5/£6 per club, so soon adds up if you're having 10+ clubs done. But each to their own.

I bought fake grips off of eBay last year and genuinely they lasted longer than my actual MCC aligns. The only thing is they got shinier quicker and lost tack whereas the real ones crumble.

Ive been using the midsize mcc plus 4 Golf Pride grips off a seller on Ebay and can honestly say there is no difference in quality maybe i struck lucky but when i questioned the seller on authenticity he replied "rest assured factory oem" ..third year in and absolutely no wear ,i think at the very worse they are seconds with minor flaws ,but darned if i can find it, they even all weigh identically.with many positive feedbacks from many happy golfers. think i may just buy a few packs.

Low odor mineral spirits or paint thinner works for activating most tapes. Leaving the tape backing barely on and centered on the back as a catch for the fluid also reduces how much is needed. Pour the fluid and use the tape backing to make a quick up/down swipe to wet the tape.
If you have access to an air compressor most grips can be removed and reused. All that is necessary is an old-fashioned bag tube cut to the length of the grip. (for separating the clubs) . Slide the tube over the grip, hit the end of the grip with air and work the grip loose. Once loose continue to apply air to work the grip off the club. This can be done faster than cut-and-peel once you figure it out. The one downside is it's quite loud.

I know from working in the clothing industry that there are some factories that sell off exactly the same item at a fraction of the price..sometimes with a tiny flaw in them, sometimes without the logo, but often just because they can! I bought some of these same grips...although maybe slightly better quality and they are actually great when they are fitted and worked out at under £3 per grip. I just put on an extra layer of tape to my normal, but the align works and the 'gripiness' is just the same. They probably won't last as long, but so far I have had them on for several months and they are as good as new.

I bought the same grips off eBay, as you said for the price I knew there was a good chance they was fake, and yes they where, the colour (red) and golf pride print at the bottom came off when I used white spirits to fit them, other than that I’ve got no other issues, feel good and plenty of grip, you’ve got to keep the Chinese sweat shops going through these hard times

I have a set of Yonex Cyberstars that I got in 2008, the grips were ruined. I couldn't afford to buy a new set yet so had to do something. Golf bidder offered me £25 for my clubs so I wasn't going to shell out £100 on new grips. I went and purchased these exact FAKE GRIPS in mid-size, ( i knew they would be thinner) and regripped all my irons in them.... and... it was the best thing I could have done for the clubs and my bank balance. I now have a new set of JPX 921 hot metal pros being built as we speak, but these grips have gotten me through the last 6 months of golf perfectly fine and I am glad I did it.

Excellent video and very informative. I recently bought a set of Callaway XR irons with New Fake Golf Pride Allignment Grips as shown in your video. I paid in total £158 plus £12 postage. Got to say I hate fakes and the quality and feel is so poor. I complained to eBay to return them and get a refund.
Also I bought a grip for my driver from eBay and that was fake too. So I don’t buy grip’s from eBay unless it’s from a Golf Shop advertised on eBay.
I see what you mean if you have really cheap clubs but honestly the clubs would look stupid having fake state of the art grips on a bunch of hippo clubs for example 😂😂

A little tip Simon, you can put the fluid in the grip and pour it out from the little hole in the top, its less messy.
I have used the grips lots of times and to be honest they are ok, just use more tape under the grip, prefer the ones with out the alignment lines on though. Lasted well and scrub up ok when dirty.

I believe I’m playing with fake MCC+4 now.
Got half dozen from a playing buddy who picked up a few dozen on Wish.
Been playing them for the last three years, twice weekly and they’re not even close to ready for change. Clean them up with dishwashing liquid and some scotch bright and voila, like brand new. Unfortunately, the midsize grips are heavier so they will affect your swing weight if you’re changing from a standard grip. Golf pride‘s website say the midsized Align should weigh about 68 g and that’s exactly where my grips were when I installed them. 68.6g. Every single grip weighed out at 68.6g.
Pretty impressive for a knock off.

I unknowingly bought a set of these about a month ago. 10 grips for $50 on eBay. They do look and feel okay so far, but they are pretty thin and the align strip seems to be just painted on. It is more like an align "stripe" (no ribbing) which defeats the purpose of buying an "Align" grip. Gripping them was very difficult. They were extremely difficult to slide on. And since the align strip is fake, getting it straight before the solvent dried was maddening.

I really didn't want to go spending around £100 re-gripping them so I bought 13 midsize 'golf pride' grips off onbuy for £38 and a garsen putter grip for £17. All in all a good set of irons and a good putter with new grips for £75 - not bad at all...and they've made the set of clubs nice to play, perfect for getting me into the game again. Since he's a beginner and the second hand set purchased was £40 complete with everything, it doesnt make sense to go to a pro shop and replace all the worn off grips with the original ones..better just apply those cheapo ones..and once hes better at golf, get a good proper set, and u can slap it with new original grips if he wants to. It just doesnt make sense to me, to replace grips which cost more than the whole set it self.

Just been through a similar process. I messaged the Ebay seller first and asked if the grips were genuine Golf Pride, he "obviously" confirmed they were. I decided to go ahead and bought the grips as they were to be fitted on my old 2nd set of Ping Eye 2 irons so difficult to justify the full costs. American Golf regripped the clubs and told me they were not original. They pretty much feel like the original Golf Pride grips on some of my other clubs and to look at definitely look like the real version. Let's see how long they last. Regarding the Ebay seller, I messaged him and told him the grips were fake. This is his response :
    good day,sir
This is a genuine product produced by the original factory in Taiwan and approved for sale by a regular dealer.
I don't know if you know the clothes brand of "champion"?This brand can be divided into two versions: American version and Japanese version. The Japanese version will be smaller than the American version(the JP L Size will equal to the US M Size), and the material will be slightly different. Also, as a tip for putting your grips on you can use an air compressor for those that get stuck half way or even just to put them on from the start. The type of compressor that you can use in your 9v car port for tyres will suffice and you simply get the air going, place it in the small hole at the end of the grip and the grip will then float on the club to let you align with ease...

I play the fake Golf Pride MCC Plus 4 grips and have no complaints. I paid $50 USD for the 13 grips (that's less than $4.00 per grip.) Here in the US, the authentic grips retail for $12.50 per grip. Thats $162.50 for 13 grips -- more than 3 times the price I paid on eBay. Since I regrip my clubs every season, that's an incredible savings. Honestly, I'd feel more guilty about buying fake grips if Golf Pride weren't charging such astronomical prices. Unless things change with regard to Golf Pride prices or the quality of the fakes (which I feel is pretty good), I'll continue to take my chances with the fakes.

I have bought some New Decade fakes before. They were certainly better than the ones you bought but the smell definitely gives them away and also the font on the grip isn't quite right. They are certainly better than old grips but possibly go harder a bit quicker. As a quick replacement certainly not bad but I would spend money on a genuine velvet grip rather than a fake MCC or New Decade.

I bought the similar but "chinese brand" grips and they are both durable and grippy... Now the thing is, as you point it out, they are bloody thin. And given that I should be playing midsize, super thin standard, don't help me much... However, for the price, they are really useful!

I've restored two old Ping putters since watching your video on restoring the Scotty. I've noticed on eBay the amount of obviously fake Superstroke grips and thought the same as you; if someone is selling a £30 grip for £7, it's clearly fake. Thanks for the re-gripping tips though, attempting my first tomorrow.

Need to replace some grips on 6 second hand clubs . Looked online and noticed these for sale on a few sellers sites that just didn't look like selling grips was their speciality and grips were listed as golf pride and very cheap. I've delayed buying these as I thought they couldn't be real. Thank you so much , I now realist I need to be careful out there.

I’ve just fitted 13 MCC +4 to my set and honestly they feel and look fantastic. I have heard about the smell of fake golf grips and these did not smell bad actually. Delighted for £40

I have also purchased the MCC+4 midsize (blue/gray) from eBay that are fake. I have compared them to a real version and they are a excellent copy. The most notable physical differences are that the blue colour is slightly lighter and the taper on the butt cap is slightly less than the real one. But the biggest give away is that the product code on the plastic wrap say that it is a standard size. Having installed them on my clubs (less my driver which has a real grip), their performance is so far is identical to the real grip.

Once visited a factory in India that made ' Big Name' polo shirts. Apparently 'said' company ordered 1m garments to cherry pick the perfect finished item, but only select 25% for sale?
Where do the other 75% end up? Wouldn't let me bulk buy and ship to the UK as this was against 'Company Policy'. They cannot be 'skipping' all of these garments. What you pay £40+ retail in the UK costs coppers to make!

I just happen to have an exact authentic grip bought from a reputable vender here in Canada. Still has the shrink wrap on it and compared it to your video. It was exactly the same except on the barcode the outside numbers were closer to the bars. Have the same colour also and the numbers on the code were exact! Looks like an inside job to me. BTW, brave man for doing the regrip in the living room. I used a vice grip with rubber covers and a painters tray to catch the liquid. Did mine before the last lock down. Cheers

Hiya simon this time last year I wanted to regrip my clubs never having done it before, I purchased what I thought were golf pride multicompounds off ebay, when I received them they looked really good they were obviously copies cost £33 for 15 grips I felt like a right numpty, however I regripped all of my clubs which was much easier to do than I had imagined, 12 months later the grips are still all intact and perfectly useable. However in future I will make sure I buy the real deal as I know they are fake and that just doesn't sit right with me. Keep up the great content cheers

I bought some imitation grips from China. Golf pride. A little bit of paint came of when regriping but overall well pleased with results. When on the club I don't think anyone could know the difference. Trouble is I dont look for bargains anymore I buy cheap from China! Or from a reputable golf shop.

My pro put some mid-size Golf Pride alignment grips on 2 of my wedges...they were so good I then had to pay £12 per club to have the rest of the set done, previously I had the standard size alignment grips but once I tried the mid-size they seemed so much better than normal. I have medium sized hands and have always had standard grips before....just try the mid-size is what I'm trying to say!

As for the grips, if I were selling a set of clubs and the grips needed changing, then sure, I'd get the cheap copies. They'd look better and for a relatively small outlay could mean getting a lot more money for the clubs.

Pretty sure mine are fake but I've used them for a season and had no issues , the paint has worn a little bit but not terrible. Regripped the set with cp2 Pro grips myself for 30 quid. I've watched a video on fake grips and the issue seems to be when you remove them, they don't come off in one piece but in lots of shards of rubber.

I bought similar midsize GP midsize +4 grips for a similar price, I think mine were slightly better fakes than yours. I see what you mean about using them on cheap clubs but by buying them isn't that just going to make these people make more fake grips and potentially undermining the reputation of these brands after all the money they plough into r & d especially if the buyer doesn't know it's fake they could end with a negative opinion of the manufacturer which isn't deserved.Keep the videos coming it's helping to keep me sane.

I purchased the same grips just before COVID shutdown. Didn't go to have them installed until 5 months later. The club tech informed me that grips were counterfeit and did a comparison with the OEM in the store.
The seller is no longer on eBay. However, they may be using different accounts because the fake grips are still for sale. I filed complaints and pics of the misleading ads with eBay, Golf Pride, and FBI.

Purchased standard MMC no reminder. The grips were thinner, but not by much. Had to have the real one, side by side, to tell difference. Wrapper ink was smudged. The texture lines were not deep and defined. However, they had good grip and felt great.
OEM blue color rubbed off onto my hands and gloves. The counterfeit in blue didn't color bleed.
I installed the fakes on my son's clubs and OEM on my clubs. I didn't reveal that they were copies. My son could not tell the difference between the his fakes and the OEM on my clubs.

It’s a odd subject. I don’t like the fact it’s a copy however as you said if it’s better than the grip you have currently on the club by all means go ahead. Worth while tho for practicing for those regripping for the first time.
