Really enjoly your content, building has added a new emersive level to the hobby. When building up to plus4 instead of alternating top to bottom Ive been starting with lap to opposing sides then to top finishing with the adhesive tape lapping underneath just a small tweak thats yielded better feel I believe. At a club I worked at back in the '90s, a guy had G.P. full cord grips similar to today's Tour Velvet cord. But he would take a stiff wire brush and scrub his grips until they looked like they had hair. Went through grips like crazy, but he liked that feel. Good player too, better than scratch hdcp. Just a weird dude.
I used to always install grips with tape only on the bottom hand end of the grip. This keeps the grip a bit undersize and levels out some of the taper as well. Grip still holds nicely and keeps the diameter down a bit without stretching it. You could use this method AND stretch it for an even smaller diameter result.
Always find it interesting when someone else does it. Don't have the fancy tape dispenser so fit tape in place from sharpie mark to end. You're a stephead with the tape covering already removed. Enjoy your videos.
Been using the Golfworks "Grip Rib" with the grey golfpride +4 for a couple of years, and can warmly recommend it. It realy is a nice feeling, to grip a club that feels good. Remember it's only legal (according to rules) to use 1.. As in you could actually stack them, but that will not confort to golf rules..
Personally, I would not block the ventilation inside the shafts, under any circumstances. Good instructions for beginners, by watching these videos you can avoid many mistakes.
I like the idea of the Lamkin 1150 crossline grip, 11 1/2 inches long versus 10 1/2 like all others, but they seem to be out of stock often. I've stretched grips close to a full inch further although some styles just won't cooperate without a lot of solvent, ha ha. Doing so I have to use full size build up tape from Golf works which is noticeably thicker, several wraps or the grips become a bit skinny.
Great video! Gripping clubs myself has always seemed approachable, but I've not gone for it. This gives me even more incentive! Question of tip 2: will the club head's weight make it point straight down, or do I have to align the face of the club perpendicular to the ground? I love the adea of adding that rib as a reminder for proper placement, but want to make sure I get it in the right place!
Thanks for the tips. I do have one question. About how may wraps can you put under a grip before the additional stretching (and thinning) of the grip overcomes the additional thickness of the tape?
Will depend on the grip somewhat but really every extra layer of tape will thin it out a little. Best to just assume that each layer of tape is really adding 4/5th of the additional tape diameter.
Thanks AJ. You covered two styles I’m currently using with my Golf Pride MCC Align plus4 midsize. Usually can only find them grey but would love to try this on some different color grips.
Do you make clubs for your followers?? I am interested in a new wedge and didn't know if that was something you'd do if we have our specs. Thanks for your GREAT videos!
I have Tour Velvet plus4 grips. And would like to have midsize on the left hand. So 5 tapes. How do I get the transition to the lower hand properly? I don't want them any thicker than they already are. Many thanks in advance!
Thank you very much for the video. I want to change my grip on an evnroll putter with a counterbalance grip. I bought the tourtac grib, also with a counterbalance. I guess this works the same way as a grip on an iron or driver?
I am used to using midsize Golfpride Tour Velvet and am interested in a new grip possibly ...maybe the MCC plus4 midsize or do you have any suggestions i like a grippy feel and something thats durable and maybe a softness to it..... open to almost anything ....all suggestions welcomed...cheers from Canada
Question for you AJ....if you install a 0.560 undersize grip on a 0.600 shaft does that take the grip size up? To say a regular? And how far would you need to stretch it ro retain its undersize? Love the channel by the way. 👍
Probably would not need to stretch very much. The rubber will already be thinned out having to stretch over the .600 shaft. Different grips stretch differently.
Thanks for all your tips. Very helpfully and entertaining. On another topic Cobra Rad Speed one lenght irons. Does it make any sense to have different lie angles? Seems strange to me. Thanks AJ
@@EFGMC must be what Cobra had in mind. I do alot of tinkering and have not hit theses clubs very well. They also have 80 gram in the 5&6 iron 90 gram in the 7 thru 9 and 110 gram in the p& gap wedge. Do much for all being the same. Thanks for your response. Enjoy your channels 👍
Hi… first off I love your instructional videos! So… my question is .. I am installing a parallel shaft Mitsubishi MMT SHAFT in a head. The website said to tip the shaft 1.5 inches( it’s a six iron) I tipped it and noticed that the end of the shaft is solid … no hole. So when I try to install the shaft there is pressure apparently and I can’t get the head to stay on. What do I do? Is this how these shafts are built ? Thank you! Vern
Did you buy a used shaft? That is really the only way you would have a sealed vent hole. Should have an opening and if it doesn't, you need to make one with a drill or punch.
If I was to add a rib and additional full length wraps and extra lower hand wraps. Should I put the rib under all the warps, directly on shaft. And should I add all the wraps face down to accentuate the rib?
I would not do all the wraps the same direction as it can become difficult to get them to stay stuck as that seem gets bigger. As far the rib, I would stick it to the last wrap of build up tape before you put on the double sided final layer. Otherwise the rib will feel worn down under all the tape layers.
Amazing, such a great answer. I'm going to get the golfworks ribs. I have a question about them: are they flexible enough to contour to round shape of the shaft from edge to edge? I've used some model making plastic and cut it down to the size of the golf works ribs. Unfortunately the plastic is too rigid. Therefore the edges don't curve around the shaft and sit flush against the shaft. The home made rib has basically tilted to one edge as soon as I installed the grips.
With Tip 3 I find it better to set out 1 shaft and measure the intervals I tape , this way you make sure they all feel the same , just guessing can leave them all feeling different and needing to be removed
Good video !, just one question , my clubs are provided with Standard Grip where my hand size is suitable for Midsize Grip; is it preferred to modify the grip size by adding tape instead of changing Grip ?Iam afraid in modifying clubs balance point Tks Adriano
The weight will change either way in most cases. There are however some midsize grips that do not weight any more than standard 50g size. JumboMax is the one I am thinking of.
Where can you get those dark grey crossline360’s? Those are my go to grips, I usually use the Taylormade OEM ones that have red end caps I think the use on the Stealths. Wish they offered them in midsize so I have to build them up with tape :/
Yes it can. I did a video kind of on this topic way way back when I started the channel looking at the difference between a .580 ID grip and a .600. People always think the .580 would naturally end up thicker because there's more rubber to build up the smaller .580 shaft diameter. But when I put one of each grip on the same .600 diameter shaft, the two grips came out the same size. The big difference was the .580 was stretched more and felt much harder than the .600 grip. Same thing could be seen with building up grip size although the tape will add some cushion to the feel so might not be quite the same as my original video.
AJ, the tape you use you do not take a cover layer off, the instructions that come with the tape I have purchased say to take the protective layer off before the final fitting steps. What are your thoughts?
As mentioned, the double sided tape dispenser pulls the backing off when you pull it. I can't stress how much faster it is having a dispenser like this vs having to pull it off by hand.
@@atone1855 I use masking tape when building up and only use double sided tape on the top layer. Masking tape is half the price so no need to waste it where it doesn't matter.

As others have said, usually they are close but you can always find double sided and or masking tape that ends up quite a bit different. Usually not an issue though unless you are using many many layers.
Yes, standard masking tape works fine. This stuff I use comes from a golf website and they call it build up tape but it's really just masking tape. Only thing I wouldn't use is painters tape because it sometimes can slip.
Do you have a special tape roller that removes the non-sticky side of the tape? I kept waiting for you to remove it, but then noticed you had an additional roller. Never seen that before.

The SLDR to this day is as long as any driver ever. The problem with it was always control. Don't know that you will find another driver that will be longer, they will hopefully however be more consistent. I would look at spin and impact point first to see if there is a difference.
I've heard of using one layer of duct tape for the lower hand when making a +4 style design to avoid having to put on 4 layers of masking tape. Do you think this will work?
No reason it can't. Only issue with one layer only, is that you can't stagger the tape in order to smooth out the transition so you end up with slightly more of a hump in the middle of the grip. Don't know that you would even notice it though.
I'm actually looking for bigger than super jumbo grips not super skinny grips. How do you regrip to get thicker than the biggest one they have available?
Just need to get a shaft extension or even an old shaft that you cut a piece off of. Epoxy that into the existing shaft and then cut to desired length.
@@EFGMC this might be a stupid question but for a 1/8" adj I would assume I can just give leave a little room when putting in the new grip... Btw thx to your videos Im regriping my own clubs... Now my friends want to do it too!

Yes but it can be harder to get the grips to slide on depending on how built up and how smooth the tape is.
Which do you prefer when regripping a set of golf clubs? Do you prefer two-sided tape, or compressed air.
I like air but some grips just don't hold as well with it so need to use double sided tape.
Can you use build up tape and the line up strip at the same time? and I was thinking trying to mark either side of your thumb, just for a solid feel?
Yes, you can do both. I would just make sure that you are rotating the tape layers to avoid a seam that would be more pronounced with the rib.
