"Bark At The Moon" is the gold standard of guitar player quality. Guitarist's today are still dissecting that track in the aftermath of its wake to unlock its secrets while going insane to master it. Literally hundreds of video's trying to teach it are on youtube. Let's get Jake his due credit and put it in perspective "Bark At The Moon" is a literal tidal wave of sonic mastery few have achieved on this freaking planet.

Great tune loved the solo but that stuff was par for the course with Ozzy and most of the music at that time. Just because you lived it don't mean it was the best part ever. This was actually later on with Ozzy, when he tried going more popish. "few have achieved on this freaking planet" /facepalm.

Dana Strum recalled to me in 1995 (when I gave him a ride from the airport) the way he had to talk Randy Rhoads into coming to the audition. He said “Randy kept telling me that he didn’t have enough gas to make it back home...and I said ‘Dude! I will give you $5 to put in your tank if you can just get your ass down here!!’ and by the time Randy got there, Ozzy had been passed out on the recording console for about 30 minutes. Randy whipped out a 3-5minute solo that actually woke Ozzy up!” He continued, “Ozzy barely lifted his head for just long enough to mumble ‘Tell the.. bloke ..he’s.. got the gig.’ and then proceeded to put his head back down on the console”, Dana said.
I happened to be fortunate enough to be working for ROCK 106 in Spokane when Dana Strum shared this historical moment in the passenger seat of a Toyota Tercel on the way to Spokane International. True Story.

Funny, because that's the last album I bought. It was way to commercial compared to his previous records, and the big 4 were killing him as far as real metal goes. The Ultimate Sin vs Master of Puppets? No comparison, Metallica destroyed Ozzy. I saw that tour and witnessed it firsthand when Metallica opened for Ozzy. I went to see Ozzy but left impressed with Metallica. Jake was still the best guitar player to take the stage that night though.

    • @brandondickie3456
      @brandondickie3456 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@Jangocat Jake was/is a beast. He’s better than Kirk Hammett technically (Jake’s technicality went far beyond just his playing style, he purposely chose to play hardtail guitars because of the tone, he had his guitar pickups slanted backwards to match the position of Jimi Hendrix’ pickups because Jimi played a right hand guitar upside down and the way Jimi’s guitar was strung indirectly made it to where the pickups would give “more bite out of the wound strings and more thickness from the bottom strings”, also Jake experimented with different distances of mounting the pickups between the bridge and the neck and he had a tone with his amps that required a lot more precision because the clarity of his tone showed mistakes a lot more, and dare I say he’s better emotionally as well. But Metallica back then was an entirely different type of destructive power, whether it be Ozzy, Van Halen, or if Jimi Hendrix had literally come back to life, the rebellious and ‘we’re doing shit different and doing it our way’ attitude of Metallica from 1983-1988 couldn’t have been stopped, they were like an impending doom for the old legacy that metal bands of the past had set, and their influence came from James’ downpicking riffs, Kirk’s shredding, Lars’ ‘Lars-thing’, and Cliff Burton’s monumental songwriting and bass playing ability. They were a metal band that purposely did everything different and played with a high speed crushing thrash metal sound just to be different than the other metal bands back then. The black album on the other hand… anyways Jake in the 80s and beyond was one of the greatest guitarists of the 80s metal scene, but there’s only so much one guitarist can do to try to hold his own against an unstoppable “we’re wearing jeans and t-shirts on stage, and besides skateboarding, we’re letting our Gibson explorers, Mark iic+ amps and EMG pickups do the talking” wave of thrash metal destruction.

Sharon and Ozzy both use people. Remember it was supposed to be a band. (Blizzard of Ozz) Look at Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake, you need go no further. I have no doubt over time Randy would have been unceremoniously fired or he simply would have quit. Rudy Sarzo got when the gettin was good, same with Brad Gillis and later Mike Inez. There's no way Randy Castillo could be involved with Jake E. Lee getting let go either. And most recently Zakk Wylde was informed his services were no longer required after "Black Rain" not in person but online. "I didn't want another album to sound like a fucking Black Label Society record' was Ozzy's excuse. At least to Zakk's credit, he seemed to let it go over time and didn't take things personally. Fact is I really like all of Osbourne's stuff, but he's not a great human being, apparently neither is Sharon. I did hear years back during Wylde's time with him, that Jake was approached about working with Ozzy again, since the Lee albums were the two most commercially successful. Jake turned it down is how the story goes.

After much contemplation, I've come to realize that the iconic heavy metal bands of the 80s, such as Ozzy Osbourne, Ratt, and Motley Crue, were primarily composed of Baby Boomers. While Ozzy himself was born in 1948, most of his peers were born in the 50s and early 60s. Despite this, their music resonated with the younger Generation X, my own generation. Unfortunately, many of us were too young to have experienced the early days of Black Sabbath, and only discovered Ozzy as a solo artist.
It wasn't until later that I learned to appreciate the foundational work of Black Sabbath, but to this day, the first two Ozzy albums featuring Randy Rhoads on guitar remain timeless classics. While subsequent releases like Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin may not have aged as gracefully, they still held a special place in the hearts of 80s metal fans.
However, it's important to recognize the role of Randy Rhoads and Jake E Lee in making Ozzy's solo career so significant to us. Despite being overshadowed by Ozzy's larger-than-life persona, Jake E Lee's contributions to the music often go overlooked. This is a shame, as he played an integral role in shaping the sound that defined an entire generation.

In that respect Zakk Wylde had it easier than Jake.

Here’s my thoughts: Ozzy’s first 4 albums has great musicians playing on them. They wrote great songs. I think sound wise (how they were mixed and mastered) sucks! Let’s focus on the Ultimate Sin and the sound quality of that album. Ozzy had made an announcement that he was going to go in and take out some of the keyboards and have the album re-mixed. I even heard an interview where Jake was reaching out to Ozzy to let him know that he would be happy to go in and replay some of his parts or whatever Ozzy wanted, to polish up the album. I like the album. It has phenomenal playing on it. BUT I can’t hear the cymbals and the album as a whole, just sounds over compressed. Nothing against the keyboard player or what he played on that album, but I would love to hear it stripped back to guitars, bass and drums (where we can hear Randy hitting the cymbals lol and maybe Jake overdubs some of the tracks with his new Friedman amp set up). It wouldn’t be a new album per say from Ozzy and Jake, but I think it would really take that album to another level. Thoughts?

Another messed up part is Phil didn't actually write "Shot in the Dark." It was co-written by him with two other musicians from his previous band. Phil and Ozzy never gave those two guys songwriting credits, so lawsuits ensued. This is the reason that The Ultimate Sin and Just Say Ozzy were the only releases not remastered back in the day, as they both contained versions of that song. You can hear the original pre-Ozzy version here on TH-cam. In short, screw Phil Soussan.

There's so many guitar solos out there that inspired me, but BATM inspired me to pick up the guitar. The only solo (at least for me) that had such a frenetic sonic wall of phrasing that blew me away like BATM was Nuno Bettencourt's solo in "Get the Funk Out". So many good players out there. I stand on the shoulders of giants.

I've been in some bands where so and so was whispering in so and so's ear about someone else in the band being the weak link, or not fitting in. It just shows how people's human natures are the same whether they're small potatoes, or prominent professionals.

It's generally why I don't listen to a lot of the inter-band bullshit. I've been there, it's petty, it's bullshit, shut the fuck up, and play. My only real exception was Phil throwing shade at Dime and Vinnie, over a situation he fucking caused. Fuck Phil.

I love Jake’s playing to death, just the second you compare to Randy, Randy wipes the floor with him. But Randy wiped the floor with every player. That’s why I don’t like to compare, just appreciate every player by themselves

I wouldn’t say Randy “wiped the floor with him”. Randy is legendary. No doubt. But Jake is a top tier guitarist in his own right. Had he not been canned by Ozzy, I think he could’ve put out some legendary material.

But it was unclear - she kept going on about “Jake, when you have your own band blah, blah…” He got back to his apartment and his roadie told him that word had already gotten out that he was let go. Jake was like “What? I just had dinner with her!”

On an entirely different (lower / real world) level... a level that MOST can relate to:
I was in a band that morphed several times over... I was the lead singer the whole time and it went this way, then that way and back again, all based on the lead guitarist, who, was the initial member. He smoked weed, lots and lots of weed. He never wanted to practice as he thought he never needed to. He was already the big Rockstar in his mind. He would become increasingly worthless AS a guitarist whilst simultaneously becoming increasingly bitter and nasty as the gig dragged on. He smoked dope behind whatever dumpster was behind the bar between sets and it kicked in with a vengeance about 10-15 minutes into the new set. Yeah, don't tune your guitar, don't adjust instruments/ amp settings, just inhale as much weed as possible...
As well, everything, I mean EVERYTHING (songwise) ended with this bullshit flamenco outro. I told him to just learn a couple of Santana songs and get it out of his system and that all songs cannot end with some south of the border, salsa-laiden bullshit. Talking metal songs, Priest, Crue, Sabbath, any and all. We also forfeited out pay temporarily as we all worked (except the guitar god) all made good money, so we let him keep all the gig $... tips and all. This of course became the new normal. I finally said fuck it all and quit. He went on the annoy everyone and anyone new that he hired. The band name changed a million times and the places we played would not hire him anymore. It felt good that they told him that if he got me back then they would hire him. Because I held the crowd, retained business and that he (solo) did the opposite. He was late, out of tune, arguing over a hot mike... just a train wreck. He finally asked me to rejoin and I calming told him that I would quite honestly, "rather put a bullet through my head"... but that's for asking. He went on to fake a cancer drive for himself with his brother and pulled about 5k... spent it all on pot (of course) and now lives with his elderly mother. Classic.

Jake is SUCH a badass and one of THE greatest rock guitar players ever. He had that "girls love him guys want to be him" quality. I do think the Randy albums are better; there's a fire and chemistry to that band that is undeniable. But "Bark At The Moon" is def a top 5 Ozzy song of all time. I wish the album production was better. Sin is an awesome underrated gem of an album and I think Ozzy hates it because he dressed like a glam grandmother and was at his worst with alcohol and drugs.
As a player I'd argue Jake is the best; his tone was biting, sounded like he's shooting from the hip but always pulls it off. Didn't play basic scales, always had interesting note choices in solos and some really interesting chords and extensions, could play classical just like Randy... I hear he was asked back in the 90's but turned it down.
The one thing I truly like though is that the 3 major guitar players of Ozzy's solo career all had something to offer and have all contributed to his top 5 list IMO of Ozzy songs.
