I am an organic gardener in the uk and like you the weather has been awful. Nothing is growing well this year and I haven’t seen one butterfly or a honeybee in my garden. I am convinced that it is to do with the geo-engineering that is being carried out without any consultation or consent from the populace. On the rare day you have a clear blue sky, keep a watch out for aeroplanes leaving a trail in the sky. There won’t be one trail there will be loads and the trails eventually merge together blocking out the sun. These trails are from commercial and private jets which spray out a cocktail of chemicals one of which is nano particles of aluminium. Now we all know aluminium is a neurotoxin - which affects the brain and causes dementia. Plants don’t do well in aluminium polluted soil either. Their excuse is that they are deflecting the sun to prevent global warming. This is happened worldwide. Climate control is a weapon, this weapon is used to create flood, wild fires, famine etc. if you think I am making this up, go to The Vobes on TH-cam and you will find plenty of info. Also try geoengineering.org You won’t find anything on google, try DuckDuckGo search engine. It’s time everyone became aware of what’s going on right under our noses.

This made me realize its almost July and i have nothing close to harvest due to bad weather and slugs 😅 gonna put al my hope into an awesome autumn
It is hot here in Alabama with the heat index reaching 40C, and summer has just begun. I have potatoes chitting that will go in the ground in ten days. In about three weeks, I'll start seed starts for cabbage, and sow seeds for carrots and turnips. In mid August, I'll start seed starts for Nappa Cabbage, or Hilton Cabbage, brocolli, and cauliflower. It will be september before I plant boc choy and Yellow Heart Winter Choy. Finally, in October, I'll plant garlic cloves. Grocery store mystery garlic worked well for me, but Elephant Garlic was a bust. It did well until the temperature started warming up in March. I am harvesting peppers, tomatoes, squash, red noodle beans, and cucumbers on a regular basis. The heat hasn't slown the tomatoes in the least bit. They are still flowering and producing. I have cantaloupe and Sugar Baby watermelon on the vine. I just invested in hens, two Speckled Sussex, and three Rhode Island Red. They are about two weeks old. Their wings are fully feathered, and their tail feathers are coming in. Their hen house has been assembled. I have a 4 meter x 3 meter x 2 meter chicken run scheduled for delivery on Monday. Not only will I have eggs in the near futurer, I'll have plenty of manuer to add to my compost bins. The more I make, the less I have to purchase. I'm up to about 3 cubic meters a year.
The plants on my balcony are growing so slowly, it will be a miracle if I get one harvest this year. My Swiss Chard is well over a month old and still looks like week old seedlings.

I have yellow squash plants that have been in the ground since mid-May, and they might be a full two inches tall...very strange. I'm still watering them though, never give up! xD

Been a cold year for me, 20 growing degree days behind last year. Had an epiphany that its about time to stop hoping for the summer crops and get ready for fall and winter 😂

In the high desert climate where I live in Oregon , we have been experiencing the normal temperature extremes. 80’s F daytime temperatures that drop to low 40’s F at night . Then we had a three day Freeze warning June 15-18 and even though I covered , I lost my Zinnias and a few dahlias . Now it’s back up to 90 degrees F . And next week , the temp . Low drops back down to 39F . Makes me crazy

South coast of UK here, harvested my first potatoes with very successful crop. Grew them in 30l heavy duty buckets. No earthing up. My tomatoes are great, Swiss chard, peppers, chillies, herbs, garlic and onions ( harvested winter onions and garlic already).
Ps - due to climate change I’ll putting up bigger polycarbonate greenhouse to extent my growing season.
The carrot fangs were just what I needed 😂 I must check my bucket of spilt carrot seeds too!
Good morning Ben, thanks for the funny expressions, we need to be smart and alert to catch them, love those baby carrots you have growing, always new ideas and something new to watch out for. I have one of each of those kale varieties you picked to sow, both in the same 3 gallon container and they have been blessing me with fresh harvests all spring and summer and they probably will be around until winter by their looks

It’s been raining so much here in Minnesota, so I haven’t been outside and on top of pests. my bean seedlings have been demolished by beetles. I should try to sow them again, thanks for the encouragement!

Just harvested a bed of garlic and put okra and bush beans in. Working on harvesting a bed of potatoes but haven’t decided what’s going in there next.
I am in the process of harvesting my garlic. I have a 4x8 bed. I planted bush cucumbers in half and I am wondering what to plant in the other half. I may plant more bush beans. I also have potatoes ready to dig but will plant in that bed also.

Interesting idea. I’m assuming the slugs don’t make it to them? What about flea beetles? I’ve given up because of the pests 😢
@@emkn1479 flea beetle live in the soil so if you can get some new soil this will help too. I have flea beetle and leaf miners 🤦♀️ so anything that gets things off the ground and in new soil helps. For the pests I will need to til the soil in winter (I’m in Canada so hopefully cold winter) and see if it doesn’t help rid some of the eggs and larvae

Love these quick go to videos on what to sow next, useful tips and even how to cook. I’ve got packing Choi growing and had no idea how to eat it. Although something is getting to it before me, when planted in the ground. But I have some in pots in the greenhouse and nothing has nibbled them yet!
Slugs really do love pak choi, so do all you can to keep plants clear of the slugs.

Hi @GrowVeg, for slugs and snails I can recommend using coffee grounds, caffeine is a poison to them so they run away. Tested that and it works, plus, coffee grounds a rich source of nitrogen, different from DE it works while wet and you can get them free, if you are happy coffee (wo)man just empty your coffee machine into garden, but if not, ask your friends or check in nearby coffee shop.
And thanks for video, I was not able to plant anything in this season so far and was really down cuz of that so knowing what you showed here is very comforting.

The fact that you are growing peas means that my planting sweet peas later than I should have will not prevent them from flowering in the fall.
I sowed Kale in Spring (about 9 months ago for me in the Southern Hemisphere), and it's still growing on strong at the start / middle of our Winter here

Grasshoppers have decimated most of my plants, flowers, etc., but I will start some Kale and Boc Choi soon and maybe they'll be gone by Autumn. My chickens eat tons of them but this is really like a Biblical plague this year...so glad you don't have them!!

Love all your videos, so helpful! Insane drought here in Virginia, U.S. Heat index of 100F. Seems I'm battling the sun. I'm definitely putting up shade cloth. But so far, Im not discouraged! First year gardener here! Can't even imagine the slug problems you have in the UK.

In the Pacific Northwest things have gotten a really slow start because it's been pretty chilly. Yes our slugs have good taste, too! And a voracious appetite!

Great content as always, I always try and get a quick harvest of bok choi and spinach before the summer here in Toronto but it's always tricky!! A good tip if they bolt, just let them and collect the seeds after flowering to use next season :D
Additional to your recipe for bok choi, try honey and garlic. I absolutely love it cooked that way

Despite being a pest that mouse was sort of cute especially doing his undercover work.🤣 I'm busy fighting the heat here in Florida but my curly kale is hanging in there and if my Red Russian managed to survive the heat, last year they perked up and were great through the winter. Glad to see you highlighting Kale that has become one of my favorite veggies and soo nutritious!!

I would love another crop of pak choy, but it's too darn hot here in Southern Ontario Canada. A couple of my cabbages are not forming heads, so I'd best get them out while they are edible. Then I'll have room for some carrots, a chantenay variety.
I had recently subscribed to your channel and been enjoying your videos. I live in North Carolina, USA. My climate is almost similar to yours. In USDA zone 8a as of the change to the zones in 2023. Was formerly in7b. Enjoyed the carrot teeth. It was a hoot.

I tried Bok Choy for first time early under a low tunnel this spring and they turned out just great! SLO bolt Napa was a huge winner and one at 7 lbs. not enough time here to succession sow. Trying a cute baby Bak Choy this fall.
Starting fall starts tomorrow and found a winner cauliflower variety Fujiyama that is heat tolerant. I am using the two clay beds for the brassicas as they like heavy soil. And yes to bug netting.
Slugs: Susan in The Garden video shows using copper tape around PVC rings to protect plants. It probably wouldn’t be practical on a large scale, but she says it works and is reusable. I can imagine to keep leaves trimmed up as the plant grows also.

Something I discovered this year. You can get pelleted carrot seeds, no more worries about thinning out carrots and carrot fly. It’s been a rubbish growing season this year, really having to baby everything along, hot to very cold weather caused everything to bolt

2:10 Labelling is under rated, but very important - I always thought I would remember what I had planted, but then forget completely.. 2 seconds to label saves hours of trying to remember later

That winterbor was beautiful kale, it looks similar to what grocery stores sell near me. I’ll have to find some seeds. I grew curly dwarf blue and was not a fan. Working on adding more varieties besides.

Got cucumbers bursting out of the greenhouse, parsnips looking good, purple cauliflower coming on nice, but struggling with tomatoes this season. Not sure what I've done. Think it might be the weather. Was spoiled last year with June being hot .
A good way to compare years is to look up "growing degree days" for your region using the threshold of 50 degrees which tomatos need. You can compare years really easily and see that hey! Its not my fault, the growing season is actually 3 weeks behind! 😂
My toms are flowering, but there's no fruit setting... I've never had that before.

Thank you! Where are you in the world. I'm in Ontario Canada south so it's zone 6a. I'm a single retiree, and I don't need much. I've had nice veg gardens in Hamilton Ontario and a huge garden in Powell River, British Columbia Ca. I bought Swiss chard because when I was in Powell River BC the slugs were huge and voracious that was the main problem. So Swiss chard was safer than trying to grow than spinach which is just laying on the ground waiting to be eaten. Deer were a bit of a problem as well they would get over my fence sometime. We just went through a heat dome thing temps around 35 degrees C. in Ontario it's going to get very hot here. I'm not sure if it's too warm to plant it now from seed. In PR it would over winter and come back with leaves to eat the next year.

I'm in zone 4A & hv Parisian carrots sprouts (please check the spelling). The soil doesn't need to be as fine, but I do hv them in containers. Lemon thyme, lavender & rosemary are flowering. Plants, flowers, basil are ok.
Carrots grow well in containers - raise them up if you can, away from the slugs!

As others have noted, summer seems to have been cancelled this year, at least in the UK (and also apparently in France).
I think for next year I'm just going to have to grow everything under glass, heated and with grow lights.
Either that, or I'll need to research what can be grown in permanently overcast and wet conditions.
I think you'll find Summer is here. It's just very late and we don't know how long it'll last.

I wanted to ask if it is ture dat if you give your garden vegetables compost fooding in warm weather they die
Compost can be used as a mulch around actively growing plants, so long as you don't swamp/bury them of course. The compost will help to feed the soil, and then the plants, and will help the soil retain valuable moisture, so it's all good.
We're so far behind, my spring peas are just producing now, and the bush beans have yet to start 😥
Everything should catch up eventually I'm sure. :-)
I'm always surprised by the idea of replanting kale - I plant it once (in the spring) and the plants will produce well into the fall, by which time I've probably had enough. 🙂

Thank-you so much for your advice. Gardening in central Alberta. The sunflowers, peas, tomatoes and the cat mint just got a very heavy frost. They look pretty dead. Should I pull them out? We sunk to minus 5 Celsius . Didn't seem to damage the carrots, beets ,spring onions . Any advice? New to gardening
Sadly the sunflowers, peas and tomatoes cannot handle a late frost so will probably need to be removed and started again. Always try to keep an eye on the weather forecast - anything nearing 3 degrees and you need to protect your plants just in case it drops a bit more.
I would be sowing some more carrots now, but I've just finished emptying my dalek compost bin as rats had burrowed underneath. Saw one scurry out and all this time I thought it was my dog digging around the bin for the last few months.
Maybe it was the eggshells and whole potatoes that the rats loved. Don't want to use rat urine concentrated compost on my root veg! Time for some store bought compost and some mesh underneath the bin 😬 🥕
Roast the egg shells so the membrane is brown before putting in the compost bin.
I think putting some mesh beneath the bin, and avoiding any cooked foods should help to dissuade the rats.
Anyone else having a problem getting their tomato flowers to set fruit this year?
Got a feeling there's hardly any bees about... So I'm tickling the flowers with a cheapo electric toothbrush, to try and mimic bees buzzing... Anyone else tried that before?
Yes, crop looks like a failure this year. I’m going to try the electric toothbrush method of tying to get the tomatoes to pollinate.
Plant more flowers to get more pollinators, but yea everyone is using poisons on "pests" in their yard not understanding how damaging it is for pollinators. Not only bees, hoverflies etc. Tell everyone stop being clowns using herbicides and pesticides! Kill your lawn! Plant native flowers

I love your garden and all the advice. However I’d love to know what you do with all this produce. I only have a small garden yet I’m still eating last year’s courgettes and runner beans. I can only give so much away. With only 3 people in your family, what do you do with it all?

I took your advice: just sowed another lot of my absolute favorite sweet peas, more carrots, dill and coriander. Never tried kale. Have you ever tried chicory? Is it worth growing?
I've grown chicory for roots (to make a coffee substitute) which was great fun, but have only grown leaf chicory once. It was all good though - worth doing. :-)

It depends what type they are. I sense it may be a bit late. Otherwise you can sow a winter-hardy variety from around October.

My arugula is blooming lovely - will it still be ok to eat?
Yes you can definitely eat it, you just won't be getting as many leaves now it's blooming, and the leaves may be a bit tough and bitter.
Blooming arugula ? You lucky thing ! The little flowers are flavour bombs which you musn't overlook ... strangely reminiscent of peanuts . Same for radishes , when they produce young seed pods do have a nibble : refreshing and not too spicy !

I usually grow carrots after I lift the garlic and even as late as August. However, this year the garlic developed rust (I've lifted them). Is it OK to sow carrots in this bed or is the rust a hindrance to other plants? Thanks Ben.

Carrots should be fine I reckon... Just don't grow any alliums in that bed for a year or two.

Have to say that you're lucky to get anything to grow. Our tomatoes have not grown and remain stunted or died. Every year we've grown a wonderful display of veg but this year has been a disaster for us. Talking with other gardeners they're finding the same thing, something sinister is going on me thinks.
The warm autumn and the cold spring has really wrecked havok on both the plants themselves AND the pollinators/other benificial animals that would otherwise help the plant. The balance is really off this year so it was easy for things to go wrong

Outside became a slug and snails food heaven. Didn’t harvest anything 😭😭😭 everything got eaten

Plank of wood will attract slugs and snails.
You do need to watch out for slugs and snails, yes. So remove the planks the moment you see any seedlings, so they don't then get mown down by the slugs!

You do that here then you will be waisting your time and seed as nothing will grow only dye in the heat, but I will be sowing in Sep, in order to harvest at Christmas onwards.
