Hello from England. A great video and what a wonderful good deed for that blind person. Given that Shawn loves to keep the boat clean I’m surprised he didn’t take the opportunity when wearing the scuba gear to scrape any barnacles off the hull!
I'm a Nanaimoite and appreciate your honest assessment of Port Place downtown. It's too bad that you weren't able to take the very short walk to a truly spectacular bakery with excellent Nanaimo bars. And top tier coffee shops too. Commercial Street is worth navigating in the daytime to see the unique boutique shops and galleries.... but you are completely correct that the concentration of homeless is intimidating in some spots.
Hi you guys. Thanks for the videos, there great. I've been cruising these waters for 70 years and I can still Learn more about this area from you. Never to old. I'm down on C dock and love it here as well. Hope to see you guys as we walk the harbor. Take care and please keep the videos coming. Jerry
Kudos to Shawn for fishing the cane out for the guy, well done! Dinghy Dock Pub is for sale btw, asking 4.78 mil CAD on Realtor site... Was recently there and also filmed. All levels of our Govt's need to stop defacto enabling more drug use and crime and instead try to stop the cycle.
I bet that beautiful boat of yours has an awesomely equipped kitchen , too bad you can't use it, but the "experience" is always a nice way to side step that, even if its only 3 out of 5 stars , and coming from Seattle, I would think you would be used to what goes on in downtown Nanaimo , even if it is on a much smaller scale to what you should be accustomed to , thanks for sharing !
Looks like you two are having a great vacation and exploring some beautiful areas. Shout out to Jim and Rosie too , used to watch their Video's . They haven't posted anything in a long time. Thanks for the video.
Theres a nice government dock next to that tall building on the nanaimo the nanaimo water front. We stayed there on a now friends Air BB yacht. Such an amazing harbour with all the sea planes and taxis, ferry activity and restaurants. We did take that water taxi to Dingy Dock Pub ! Love it there . That was so fun.
Every year I anticipate and I’m excited for your next major step. Revisiting your retirement from your careers and traveling full-time. I hope that comes sooner than later.
GOD put Shawn in just the right place, equipped and skilled to retrieve the gentlemen’s cane. Good work. I hope the racer back tank is nice. Bought it.
Great video. Enjoy Galiano. We lived there up until 2017. We anchored in Montague this summer after our circumnavigation of Vancouver Island. Hung out with friends and had fun. Tribune Bay is usually our first stop when we go cruising as Ranger is in Parksville. Fun watching your videos.
I understand why so many mariners use Dodds Narrows, its just as easy to use False Narrows between Gabriola Island and Mudge Island a little to the east of Dodds. I lived dead center of False Narrows for 37 years beside the road access. 3 - 4 knots of current. Just follow the markers both sides that are on the shore line on Gabriola. Our log salvage boat drew 3 ft and had no issues at low water.
Wow that’s a great tip for us boaters. We’ve always looked at that pass but always seem to take Dodds Narrows. Thanks for the suggestion. We will try it next time. Our draft is 5 feet.
Comparing Nanaimo and Campbell River to their 2023 versions is a bit saddening. All seemed well September 2023 and we had the same experience you had this September in both cities. But, @c2sky1 has a point. It's not everywhere (yet) in those towns. I hope it'll turn around.
Newcastle Island looks beautiful! We were planning on a stop there this past summer but couldn't make it. Next summer for sure! We will definitely avoid Nanaimo. Too bad. It was once a nice town. BC is about to have an election. Hopefully they vote for a much needed change in leadership to start cleaning up the streets.
Very much agree that that was a Fleming yacht that you passed coming out of the narrow channel. I am a huge supporter of Flemming yachts and his videos are absolutely epic. Everybody should add that channel and watch the hundreds of videos and fantastic narration.
I appreciate the honest feedback. Frozen chicken tenders and poutine that shouldn’t be served in Canada is definitely a 3 star experience considering the nice dockside experience. We just went to Seattles boats afloat show and hope to join you on the water sooner than later.
Hello, you guys are in my back yard. I live in Sidney, BC, try that place. It is the total opposite of Nanaimo. However, it is so quite that the streets roll up by 9 PM. LOL
Dodd narrows is a very popular route for orcas, both SRKW and Biggs or transient killer whales. Many lucky folk have seen incredible displays from these animals through Dodd narrows.
IF you rode on the bus around the island, that is Galiano Island which has Montague harbour as one of it's places to anchor in. Bus used to run to the restaurant/pub.
There is a nice waterfront walk to the north from the city marina. There is also a bakery along the route that will have nice fresh Nanaimo bars. Too bad you didn't get some video of the quarry on Newcastle. It's very interesting. The water at the Newcastle docks is warm enough for swimming in summer.
Wheels up I caught it just like me saying haze grey. Means underway. Retired navy here. ( also certified shipwright) . The propeller is also known as a wheel or commonly also referred to as a counter.
23:09 A little disappointed there was no flashback to1997 pics. It would have merged with the Back to the Future nicely. Regarding Naimo, it is a working town and a bit rowdy. Drop in when the naked bungie jump is taking place. It's a touch more yachty. Cheers!
Question for you regarding going to that narrow cut at Slack tide. Did you power up your reserve wing engine, just in case you needed to fall back upon it for power failure from the main engine or to provide additional thrust if needed
Not sure if it’s still popular, in the summer there are sailboat races on Wednesday evenings at the Dinghy Dock. Usually light winds so a couple of times around the harbour or on windy evenings, out to Snake Island can (red) buoy. Unfortunately crappy politicians have led to a crappy downtown.
Good and bad places in Nanaimo, unfortunately the provincial gov. thought it was a good idea to give people free drugs hoping it would lead them to recovery…shocker…it didn’t work. Keep up the great videos, too bad you didn’t hit Jedediah on the way by. Next time!
I agree that unfortunately many cities throughout the United States, as well as a globe have succumb to open air drug addiction. I just watched a video and another TH-cam channel Burlington Vermont, and showed the open air, heroin and drug use in such an idyllic New England town
If you have access to a vehicle, Englishman River Falls is a great hike, Coombs is cool for the shops, and the goats on the roof. Parkville is a beautiful beach town. If you like craft beer, some great breweries in town.
Shame about Nanaimo. Big homeless and drug addiction/mental health problems in many cities now, but Nanaimo is particularly bad. You probably walked through the worst of it on your way to the Save-on grocery store. Other areas, including the seawall are much nicer. I wish there was more political will and better solutions to deal with these problems.
I read a cool bit of info in a book about the first explores on this coast that is interesting. The first European woman on the west coast - Hornby was her middle name. I’m assuming that’s where Hornby Island got its name.
The name honors the Spanish Finance Minister, Don Pedro López de Lerena, Count of Lerena, who supported the movement of Spanish Ships over there. In 1850 the British renamed it after Rear Admiral Phipps Hornby, then Commander of the Pacific Station.
Definitely go to the Woodstone Manor for dinner on Galiano Island. They will pick you up and return you to Montague. The Michelin chef is amazing and less expensive than Palisades at Elliott Bay marina.
Don't judge Nanaimo based on your walk to the grocery store. Yes there are unfortunates there because there are services in that shopping area for them, but we've never been approached by them or felt threatened. The downtown area is full of fun restaurants and shops and should not be missed. We are from Puget sound and have been to Nanaimo many times by boat and find it a great stop for provisioning and relaxing.
My wife and I live in Nanaimo and we 100% agree it is not a nice place in the downtown core. We hope change will come one day as it could be a world class destination.
Shawn. I don’t understand your explanation of more steerage into current than following current. I’m thinking speed through water is same either way. Please explain.
To have steerage you have to have water passing over the rudder from front to back, that the rudder can redirect and force the bow from side to side (with a direct or V drive). If a following current is faster than the max speed of your boat the water is not passing the rudder from front to back and hence no/reduced steerage. Over to you Captain! 😅
At this point no, we haven’t even started yet with our big cruising plans (hopefully in 1-2 years). We love living on the boat and can’t see ourselves on land anytime soon. Maybe someday though so we can have a garden and chickens 😉
Thanks for stopping by Nanaimo. That's a tough section around Thrifty Foods. Unfortunately our current federal and provincial governments have taken a rather unusual approach to poverty by giving them just enough money and drugs to keep them on the street and stoned. There are many great restaurants, pubs and shopping without the poverty a little further north downtown and in Old Town. Thanks for your great videos
We should just stick with the boating topics and not prosetylize. Dealing with street people and addiction is a big problem all over the world. There is no easy solution but guarenteed, if you cut of support they will steal and rob. It's called harm reduction for a reason; you may not like the optics but the alternative is worse.
It has its charms if you know where to go and to dis it for a small piece of it is in my mind disengenious and a black eye on a great city where I've lived now for 40 years. Up on the mountain to the west. You need a guide IMO if you want to experience the charms around and further afield from Nanaimo as there is lots to do and see here. The Dingy dock food looked good and a lowball critisizm may have been based on prices which suck everywhere nowadays.
I notice you guys are divers on your IG. You also mention in the video that you didn't think of Nanaimo as a destination. You're missing out on some FANTASTIC diving around Nanaimo if you're not treating it as a destination ;)
@mvfreedom well if you let us know, we have a dive boat in nanaimo we could show you a couple of sites! We can also get you proper nanaimo bars (not from a grocery store) 😉
I can see Nanaimo hasn't changed. It's been a flaming infectious boil on the buttocks of BC for a long time. Would never, ever, live in that hell hole. I know you can go outside the city or cherry pick certain areas but make no mistake, you will run into the crap all the time no matter where you live. The city leaders have failed miserably.
I give the Dingy Dock a strong 2 on visual alone, just more frozen fish deep fried and that is yawn,,,, boring. A seafood town restaurant surrounded by fishing fleets, should have fresh fish.

Sadly not unlike Seattle, Portland, San Francisco and Los Angeles homelessness and drug abuse are a cancer on the west coast due to our milder climate
And political leanings which allow addicts to just live on the streets without actual help and not demanding cities be kept clan, nice, and safe.
