So, what are you guys writing? I'm working on a space opera for kids. I noticed there isn't much of that besides Star Wars. No humans, just aliens. My main character is a tiny blue alien with an Iron Man-suit and a talking spaceship. It's basically a treasure hunt in space. Very excited about it.

I'm kinda working on two things right now. One's a lighthearted fantasy centering around a duo of adventurers. One's an antisocial and kinda neurotic tinker, the other's a strong, friendly, and slightly bone-headed archer.
The other thing is a sci-fi setting where humanity is defending what, as far as they know, is the last earth-like planet in the galaxy. They have mechs, and some people are mushrooms.

    I love these!
    how about
    - you're writing on the foredeck of an Age of Sail (H. Hornblower, Aubrey/Maturin vibes)
    - you're uploading your memories in a rainy neon alley before a cyborg murders you for the last time
    - you're writing under the stars in the badlands while cooking beans over your campfire
    - you're going into kemmer while snowshoeing across a wasteland on an ice planet
    - you're listening to the klezmers and Romany musicians playing nearby while hiding in the Slavic forest having escaped your arranged marriage
    - you're writing forbidden things in a gloomy dystopian prison
    - you're writing by candlelight in a communal treehouse city with a view of the ruins of the Age of Oil looming in the distance
    - you're writing in a tent in a legionnaire's encampment the night before you'll be overrun by the Celts, but also your enemy-to-lover is writing in the nearby Celtic encampment in part two
    - you're writing in a Gothic mansion while trying to resist the temptation to go the wing your frightening new spouse forbade you to enter

@@TMscifiwrtr I'm replying late here, but I'm 63 (also?) and have been lazily working on writing since about 6th grade. I've been reading litRPG lately and have discovered that some is written fairly well, while at least one is very poorly written yet claims to be a bestseller. I have difficulty believing that because the story is more a summary of a story than it is an actual story. It's as though a sophomore in high school wrote it. But others, like He Who Fights With Monsters and Dungeon Crawler Carl, are written well and aren't just summaries. These things have given me some hope and some inspiration to get writing myself.
Best of luck to you both. I hope we all succeed in writing something and, if we want, succeed in getting what we write published. And thought well of.

Oh, Abbie, this is my first time trying one of your immersive writing sessions and I love it 😍I'm writing a Star Wars fan-fiction story about a spirited young girl who wants to make an impact on the galaxy and prove to others what she can do. She gets taken from her home when her uncle (only living relative) dies. She's taken by a group of Rebels, and she gets enrolled in a training academy that they started. Little does she know it's her destiny to save the galaxy from certain doom alongside her friends. In the future the earth was giving out, in desperation humans sent out a guy to see how far he could go to find the next planet, because they were kind and he couldn’t read (their contract) it was easy to trick him.

The fact that this is exactly the scenario I've been struggling to write... my book series for the most part has been set on Earth and has a lot of posh jazzy settings (because I'm a sucker for deco-punk). The final book is set entirely on an ice planet tho so I'm a little out of my comfort zone.
In the scene I'm writing, the characters are travelling to the planet to solve this massive conflict, but the trip gets delayed when a hostile anomaly breaches the hull.
No joke I've been sitting at my computer for weeks trying to muster up motivation and this might be the solution 🤞👀

This may be somewhat random, but I was thinking about the origin of all these stories, before the written word - the traveller's tale, becoming something different and more extraordinary with every telling. In that sense horror, fantasy, the adventure story and every fantastical character paced into life over days and weeks of travelling over land and sea until you returned home & recounted (with no small elaboration) your journey & the beasts & lands you encountered. In the primordial imagination is the deep, dark wood where unseen predators stalk the ancient darkness, the origin of nightmare and the essence of encroaching fear. I believe the third man syndrome is also that part of you that creates the presence of another in that situation where you suddenly need there to be, sometimes in the most desolate places.

Hi Abbie. I'm currently at work on a fantasy book and I've run into a bit of a problem. None of the book's antagonists or villains are human, in fact, most of them are dragons. I would like some tips on what to do with them, so I'll provide a short summary of each of the major antagonists.
Note: In the story I'm attempting to write, dragons are essentially immortal gods that don't get along well with mortals most of the time.
    1. *Arktoron* A dragon lord believing in the supremacy of the dragon race, hell bent on conquest and domination of all races, including his own. He doesn't care about many things other than his own personal power.
    2. *Israsartyras* This is probably the most interesting villlain. A Dragon God gone mad due to a cosmic split of personality. In my story, the Dragon Gods have infinities upon infinities of different personalities that are synchronized so well that they form one superpersonality. Israsartyras's personalities became split from one another, thus leading to him going insane and wanting to do away with the rest of the draconic pantheon as well as remaking all of creation in his own image. He is also greatly worried for his family of demi-godly children, and this fear of his manifests physically as the third major antagonist.
    3. *The Sorcerer* He doesn't have a name, and in my opinion, doesn't need one. This is a monstrous Black magician bent on obtaining power greater than that of the Dragon Gods. His motivations are self preservation, as he is merely a manifestation of a God's emotions and the moment Israsartyras would regain his sanity, the Sorcerer would cease to exist. His other motive is the simple need to be the center of the universe.
I know these antagonists probably aren't much, but I would greatly appreciate any tips You can give.

      @dragonsorcerer1615 ปีที่แล้ว

@@ToddDouglasFox Thanks for the feedback. As for an epic battle, I think Arktoron VS the Sorcerer would be an interesting matchup. Two rivals fighting over their master's favor. Including any of the Dragon Gods in battles with non-godly characters is, well, pointless, because they could simply will the other combatant out of existence. But I never thought about it in "an epic battle" kind of way, so thanks.

    • @ToddDouglasFox
      @ToddDouglasFox ปีที่แล้ว

@@dragonsorcerer1615 the alternative to an epic battle is an agreement, which could mean that those on the sidelines have their own issues with an “agreement”.

    • @dragonsorcerer1615
      @dragonsorcerer1615 ปีที่แล้ว

I forgot to mention that Arktoron is already a zealous worshipper of Israsartyras. And as for the Sorcerer, I'm pretty sure I have a way to have him dragged along the other baddie's plans.
At this point in the story, Israsartyras is a disembodied spirit, which is really bad for him because he lost nearly all his power that way. The other Dragon Gods sacrificed their own powers to land a killing blow, so now they and Israsartyras are pretty much on the same level, whereas before, he was the strongest member of the draconic pantheon.
The Sorcerer, being a kind of demon, attempts to possess Israsartyras's corpse, which doesn't end up working. The Sorcerer gets killed by the resurrected Israsartyras, but the mad Dragon God ends up bringing him back out of mercy. As I said in my comment, a Dragon God has an infinite amount of personalities, and one of Israsartyras's personalities is quite merciful.

@@mariopaintcomposer5975 - Honestly I hadn't even heard of her until now. But looking into her I see exactly why you would ask that. It's a very good question. Though I would probably love to have read her books or pick her brain. Crossfire is intended to be a dystopian cyberpunk mystery/crime story set in the backdrop of a post-nuclear war city.
Crucible is an espionage-thriller where a United Nations Navy ship and crew are on a race against time across the Sol system to prevent a bio-weapon attack on Earth with the potential to kill billions. If you liked The Expanse, you'd probably like this particular piece. If I ever get to it.
Enemy Lines, as much as I want to write it, will probably never see the light of day. It's inception is based on RIFTS Earth from Palladium Books. It would be basically fanfic, unless they wanted to publish it, but then I lose all rights to it. So I may just have to write that one for myself unless I can figure out how to change the setting enough. But the short of it is human supremacist pilots/soldiers are sent out on a mission to kill a dragon. (A real, intelligent, magic-wielding dragon.) The op goes bad. They crash way behind "enemy" lines... (Which is just out in the wilderness away from "civilization.") They get rescued/helped by some local Dimensional Beings (D-Bees for short), which are just folks of different species from different worlds that flooded in over a hundred years prior. Begrudgingly they accept the help. They're fed, given shelter, and over a couple days, their power armor/mech suits get repaired. Of course these people know that the folks they rescued hate and fear them. But they do it anyway, because they're really NOT the enemy. The soldiers come to realize this too, that they're just people, and decent folks.
Capable of returning to base, they make the trip back. Debrief, get some downtime while their suits get looked over. Then get called up for a new mission. They have to go pacify a D-Bee nest. Lo and behold it's the village that they just left, and were helped by.
So now they must make a choice, do they follow their programming/indoctrination... Or do they go rogue and turn "traitor" by protecting innocent, if alien, people who mean no harm? And if they do defend their new friends, what does it look like when the dust and smoke settles?
Those are the main strokes for that storyline, and there are several subplots going on too. It's got legs, but for now it's sitting.

I was very important. The Game Master appeared in front of me.
“Go on, come and join me in my game!”
    I nodded and entered.
Not going to share the whole thing. But I got over 5.6k, and that was only within 2 sprints.

I have a few questions. I'm planning a long series of medieval dark fantasy novels with a huge scenario in a continent with a great diversity of kingdoms, characters and stories. At the beginning I was going to make 6 main characters, but I decided to give up and make only 2 given the fact that each main character lives their own adventure and isn't usually with another main character for most of the story. I'll focus the story on the relationship and conflict that arises between these two main characters.
But I don't want to give up to everything I've written about the other four characters. How do I write all of that when they won't be around any of the two main characters most of the time? To what degree can I write their point of view staying away from the main plot? (There are many event happening at the same time, the idea is that the world is alive with many different people with their own goals). Can I write many chapters that are entirely about these character's points of view? Can I do it with other secondary characters as well? With how many? Is there any rule about that? I imagine that one rule is that their stories eventually impact the main plot in a significant way.
Or can I make the 6 of them the main characters? (In game of thrones there are more than 6, but most of them were presented at the same time and they tend not to be alone so it's easier, that wouldn't be the case in my story). How much should their stories be related to each other in order to do that given the fact that they are very far away from each other?
Also, I've developed a lot of characters that are parte of those secondary character's scenarios, their personalities, goals, problems, etc. I want to write about them too, but isn't it too much?
I don't want to make a small group of important characters to carry the whole story in such a big world, as if they were the only people that mattered, like what happens in Star Wars. However, I do want characters to meet the main characters several times. It's easy for some, they might be kings, or relatives that they visit, etc. But how do I do it regarding other types of characters without making it look like a huge coincidence?
And at last, how can I know when I'm giving too much information to the reader? Besides giving that piece of information or lore little by little is there any other suggestion?

I'd recommend adding different bits about events into little bits in the story. There might be a sentence or two explaining one thing in one chapter, and in another in about 3 chapter's time mentions it as well. You can mention it through things the character feels (through sensory details or objects they find) and incorporate it into the character's story. Some ideas are books detailing history (try to write a 2-4 sentence summary) or dialogue. You could even incorporate smell or touch through things like odd/unknown texture (a specific cut in a table or tablecloth) or a smell that seems particularly interesting (like a faint smell of iron). Those two sensory details are also good for headway into flashbacks (a smell, touch, or taste that reminds the character of something).
With infodumping, usually you don't want more than a paragraph detailing everything about some random thing you're never gonna see again. It's also good to only say info when the character has more time to think so that it feels more natural. If it's during an action scene, you can leave it undetermined to give the reader questions about the world (don't do that too much) or explain it through actions and consequences. With action scenes, you generally want the reader to be on edge, but it's hard to do that when there's a bunch of words jumbled on the page.
      Hope this helps!

@@lowercasescreaming the thing is, I want those events to happen from their point of view, at the same time the reader reads them.

@@bypyros1933 Oh yeah, it might be hard for that to happen. Is it possible to have them know each other previously? Because then you could probably write a few of them in. Otherwise, I think it might be easier to do separate characters as to not shove everything into one or two stories. That can cause a lot of confusion for readers.

@@lowercasescreaming the initial idea was to have 6 main characters, and I had a few ideas to connect them. The problem is that, for most of the story, they are separate, and I'm worried 6 main characters might be too much. Also, I can connect them, but I'm worried the impact on the big plot might not be the same depending on the main characters. I guess I could also start removing them one by one until there's just the two of them, but there's still the first problem.

@@bypyros1933 why not give them each a world in which they function independently completely and then one in which they come together for a few moments in time. This is very much respectful of how life is lived in reality.

I don't get the idea behind this. The music and the visuals were more of a distraction than an inspiration. I also don't understand the 25 minutes writing 5 minutes off. The idea of taking a break at set time kind of thru off the flow of writing. I guess I just don't understand the premise of the exercise, maybe I am missing the point. Is this some kind of skill building exercise?
