Some kids grew up with Star Wars - I grew up with this. This scene was always one of my favorites, and I still think it's one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. The CGI doesn't look quite as good now as it did to me at 12 years old, but the nostalgia more than makes up for it.
I’d be lying if I said seeing allosaurus weaving in and out of the diplodocus herd didn’t remind me of a space battle in Star Wars. Must be the music, or maybe just seeing them navigate around the giant animals reminds me of scenes in the Star Wars movies where starfighters would fly past the big ships
3:24 I love the little detail of the Allosaurus scratching it neck, like they didn’t have to do that but they did. Really shows how much effort and love went into show
It even opens its mouth a little during the animation, so the editors didn’t forget to put that sound effect there. Like, the opening of the allosaur’s mouth is barely noticeable at all, and they still decided to put that sound effect in there, just in case some eagle eyed viewer did notice it.
It is so cool that they showed some Allosaurus including Big AL hunting Diplodocus as a team. I did actually know that Allosaurus and maybe also Torvosaurus and Ceratosaurus hunted large herbivorous dinosaurs like Diplodocus, Apatosaurus, Camarasaurus, Stegosaurus and Camptosaurus in packs and groups. Do you think that Tyrannosaurus, Daspletosaurus, Gorgosaurus, Albertosaurus, Gigantosaurus and Mapusaurus did something similar with Ticeratops, Styracosaurus, Centrosaurus, Ornithomimus, Struthomimus, Edmontosaurus, Corythosaurus, Euopephalus, Anklyosaurus, Pteranodon, Queztalcoatlus, Ciomolestes, Didelphodon, Argentinosaurus and Amargasaurus?
I love how the Allosaurus aren’t the ones who actually kill the Diplodocus, instead they surround it, and let it’s sickness and the heat finish the job. That’s smart as hell!
But how do they avoid dehydration? That was my biggest problem with this scene, how did they not also succumb to heat exhaustion like the Diplodocus did!? Because the narrator did state “after several hours” meaning the allosaurus just waited there
@@admiralinvertebrate5649 yeah but how did the Allosaurus not succumb to the heat that’s my biggest issue now I get the diplodocus dying because it was ill but the allosaurus are a much different story
why is it that a 19-year-old documentary is still the best documentary about dinosaurs to this day. modern ones are either silly, over the top or look super fake. I don't get it.
This deserved a theatrical release. This is still so good to watch. I don't care about the effects quality. To, this still looks damn good. There's so much detail in the way they move. It's insane to look at how the fat jiggles and skin moves, while the muscles underneath stretch and flex. It is an outstanding amount of details that brings the dinosaurs to life. The way the camera moves along them, with that heroic Benjamin Bartlett score playing throughout the scene. This is as perfect as it could have been. They outdid themselves through and through.
Exactly remember the episode with the liopleurodon? Well on that episode of Walking With Dinosaurs the animal was over 80ft long now its been discovered its only at the most 30ft long. Would love for them to correct that.
This stampede is awesome, the way the Allosaurs move out of the way just in time when one of the Diplodocus is about to trample them, it's just so damn realistic and I love every second of it.
jailson machado They've made a couple of Dino documentaries, but as I said, most filmmakers are too reliant on CGI and think they can replace ALL practical effects with them. Using animatronics makes things like this look better, but it's just too expensive to go to real locations and build robots compared to CGI for people to do it.
I used to pronounce it that same way until I went to a talk at my local museum and was quite embarrassed when the palaeontologist running the talk corrected me in front of everyone.
This is hands down one of the most beautifully orchestrated scenes in film ever. From the music to the cinematography and the pacing- it’s just great. Never gets old.
I love this depiction of Allosaurus as being solitary animals, but occasionally mobbing together to take down larger prey, like Komodo Dragons, very accurate in today's standards.
@@hamesfrank4542 There are other shows that shows Allosaurus are pack oriented. This show is inaccurate about them as solitary or being like Komodo dragon.
@@namastewrye952 sorry but YOUR WRONG. Allosaurus just like many other dinosaurs, did not hunt in organized packs. They don’t have the intelligence to form a hierarchy system like wolfs. there needs to be another documentary like WWD, seriously i wish BBC or someone would go back the the Walking With formula for a doc series on dinosaurs, make them up to date with the most solid evidence of course, but just something like this series. Theres a reason this one is known as one of the, if not, the best prehistoric nature doc mini series ever made. All it takes is for a studio to want to put the same effort they did then to create something not only as great, but even greater then the original.

Regardless of the change in the scientific accuracy of this film, this scene is easily one of the best dinosaur scenes ever made. Seeing this with the buff allosaurus of today's science and the majestic reconstruction of the diplodocus would be a sight to behold.
No over the top commentary, silly graphics, roaring, repeating the scene again and again, just animals behaving naturally and an orchestral soundtrack to indictate the atmosphere.
It's incredible that only one series of Walking with Dinosaurs was ever made. The whole format was unique - everything since has been too 'sciency' (pauses, cross-section diagrams) instead of pure nature documentary like this.

Its not realistic - the diplodocuses and the big allosaurus that come at the end are oversized, the allosaurs are too bulky. Also, they would never been able to take down animal at that size,Allosaurus probably hunted only juvenile sauropods.

This is my favorite episode of Walking With Dinosaurs! The story is fascinating and tragic, the cgi and practical effects hold surprisingly well, and possibly Benjamin Bartlett’s best score I’ve heard to date, I’m surprised he’s not that well known! Walking with Dinosaurs has been one of my favorite shows of all time since I was 7, it’s been one that’s got me rewatching occasionally, and my first experience with Dinosaur Documentaries and nature documentaries! And I happily am glad to celebrate its 20th anniversary and hope it gets a special Blu-Ray treatment soon!
This was my childhood. My gosh it’s been so many years since I’ve seen this sequence. 😲 So inspiring, especially as a kid. That great music made it so much more immersive too. Also 2:11 has always been my favorite part.
God, this was my all-time favorite program when I was a kid, it easily surpassed every movie and TV show I'd seen at that point and managed to captivate me in a way that nothing else had really done before. When I was seven I would send letters and drawings to Rebecca Hanna (the paleontologist who was featured so heavily in the behind the scenes) and even got a few back from her in turn.
This scene always manages to always bring me to tears. It has the best of an animal documentary and the best of an action movie. Bartlett’s score is perfect: it coveys perfectly the danger and horror of a gang of giant predators, effectively monsters, trying to subjugate a magnificent animal to kill and eat it, and at the same time shows sympathy for the struggle of the predators, dwarved by the colossal hervibores, giving praise to their boldness. It touches my heart every time.
A masterclass in documentary film-making. The framing, pacing, narration, and soundtrack meld perfectly and build the tension, excitement, and finally conclusion of the hunt. The way the respective musical leitmotifs of the allosaurus and diplodocus sound off right on time to underscore David Tennant's statements is impeccable.
This sequence is one of the greatest triumphs of the Walking With/Haines/Framestore franchise. All the majesty and terror and impact of watching real documentary footage of a real hunt in nature, one where the animals behave like animals, make life-or-death mistakes, harrying the prey into exhaustion. All of the excitement of a contemporary natural history series, predator and prey, life and death, natural selection writ large. All of that blood and breath and grit and muscle, all of that moving ecology. Except it's the Jurassic, and it's dinosaurs. You've stepped through time. This is the entire project realised in its ultimate form imho.
This is probably my favorite part of The Ballad of Big Al (my personal favorite WWD spin-off/special). Not only is it a fun, eye-pleasing action scene, but there's also insight into how Allosaurus might have hunted.
Man, I can’t help but chuckle at the years-old comments about how much better WWD was than more modern dinosaur documentaries. Y’all weren’t exactly wrong, mind, but… oh, man. We had no idea what was coming, did we xD
kingofnerds31 I blame the mating season, and slower Allosaurs. They're letting more weak Diplodocus grow up to dislike this. We may need to start culling them again. Anyone else want to go hunting for sauropods?
Neil Sanghvi Yeah, I think that the salt crust collapsed because if you watch the scene carefully frame by frame, you can see that the Allosaurus didn’t trip.
I love this scene for the very reason that while the Allosaurs work together, the commentary makes it very clear that they are not a true pack. They only came together out of necessity. It’s an interesting thought as opposed to the idea that Allosaurus was a pack Hunter their entire lives.
At 2:19 the diplodocus knocks his head against the camera! And at 2:34 if you listen closely, you can hear a sped up version of Time of the Titans in the background.
This stampede is awesome, the way the Saurophaganax move out of the way just in time when of the Diplodocus is about to trample them, it's just so damn realistic and I love every of it.
This may the longest the time the _Walking With_ series has had without a narrator: approximately 1 minute and 46.5 seconds, which beats the mammoth-neanderthal scene in "Mammoth Journey" by 14 seconds.
Back when this meta existed, it was so satisfying to gang up with other Allosaurus mains and take down the S tier sauropods like Diplodocus. It was always extremely risky as a single mistake could mean death but it was so satisfying. You had to coordinate perfectly or else you were jeopardizing your entire stock. Whenever me and the crew carried out one of these hunts it was the only time you saw these sauropod players scared. By far among my favorite memories from the game of life.
I genuinely think watching these documentaries as a child made me smarter I literally spent my whole childhood gathering information whilst also enjoying something fun to watch whilst everyone else at school would watch spongebob
I love the blur of the CGI Diplodocus, it adds a sort of realism to the whole nature documentary aesthetic of the original, like th dinosaurs are to active to have non-blurred images.
The neck of Sauropods was actually incredibly mascular and should have much more soft tissue presented. Biting the neck is not as easy as movies suggests. A theropod like Allosaurus with its weak bite would have a hard time cutting through even the skin. HOWEVER, the bite of Allosaurus shows that it had a very wide gape opening. Meaning a weaker bite force yeah (which was estimated to be around 2,000 PSI), but a slashing axe bite that, if broke the skin, could cause massive bleeding and internal organs rupture.
Xand W: that's true. And I respect the WWD documentary for showing them as actual animals. Nevertheless, I would like an updated version that wouldn't shit all over the original like the WWD 3D did.

I have the entire package, "BBC's Prehistoric Earth: A Natural History" watched it when I was 5 or 6, and if you remember "Time Of The Titans" you saw the size of a full grown Diplodocus is 5 times the size of this herd, so that tells you these Diplodocus aren't yet adults
Coming back to this scene after so many years...I think we can all agree, as passionate fans of the incredible creatures that once roamed our planet, that this, right here, is one of the most iconic moments of any dinosaur documentary _ever._ No heavy narration, no heavy analysis, just...Dinosaurs.

I grew up with this movie years ago and this was always my favorite scenes. The chase music makes it even better.
I see why this series was all the rage! It's awesome and so gorgeous!
Just love it the music is epic
noah glenn ikr,
I love that

2:10 Go, All, go!
Wise decision, let dinos and instruments talk.
Don't jabber, gabble, blubber, stutter, or lecture every second of the show, paleo talk shows.
Oh shit boys, Walking with Dinosaurs is coming back!
The most cinematic scene ever.
This is probably my favorite part of The Ballad of Big Al (my personal favorite WWD spin-off/special). Not only is it a fun, eye-pleasing action scene, but there's also insight into how Allosaurus might have hunted.
They need to do a Walking With Dinosaurs Special about Tristan Otto the T Rex.
Why did the music make me want to cheer for the Allosaurus instead of the Diplodocus.
Because allosaurus is BA
poor poor dipy......:(
TorvosaurusImperator untill he comes head to head with a titanosaur
TorvosaurusImperator titanosaur was the biggest dinosaur that lived, they even called it the real-life godzilla.
Jeremy Smith was it larger than Argentinosaurus
An updated version of this is well overdue. Still absolutely brilliant though.
Yea I used to watch this as a kid.Its still good til this day.I love the whipping sound it’s just cool.
Oh the nostalgia hits hard. I've watches those documentaries as a kid in a german tv.
Man, I can’t help but chuckle at the years-old comments about how much better WWD was than more modern dinosaur documentaries. Y’all weren’t exactly wrong, mind, but… oh, man. We had no idea what was coming, did we xD
This Dinosaur Series sure is a Great Award Winning Classic. :D
48 diplodocus disliked this .
Make that 61
Brittany krill Make that 82
kingofnerds31 I blame the mating season, and slower Allosaurs. They're letting more weak Diplodocus grow up to dislike this. We may need to start culling them again. Anyone else want to go hunting for sauropods?
I say next we hunt brontosaurus
kingofnerds31 Indeed, let's make Littlefoot go extinct! WOOHOO!!!
1:34 me after taking sharp cuts in front of Truck on highway
1:59 I never understood why that one fell.
My guess is that the salt crust of the dried up lake collapsed under the weight of the Allosaurus.
Neil Sanghvi
Good theory
I always thought that one just tripped 🤣 but it could be both
Neil Sanghvi
Yeah, I think that the salt crust collapsed because if you watch the scene carefully frame by frame, you can see that the Allosaurus didn’t trip.
He tripped
It was the clumsy one in the group
And his final words were "choke on it"
Great avatar and username XD
Your avatar and name is funnier than the joke.
CHOKE ON EEEEEEEEM!
*CHOOOKE OOON EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEM!*
I like the Diplodocus, it is my favourite Dinosaur.
It is samething that I like Diplodocus he is my favourite Dinosaur ever
Amazing sound score!
real
The music in this special didn't have to go so hard, but I'm glad it did. I've been listening to that track all weekend
That was the best documentary about dinosaurs every did!👍🏻👏🏻
When I was three Walking with dinosaurs was still on BBC and this really does give nostalgia
1:52-1:58 when you oversleep and school is in 5 minutes
OLD BANANA GAMING Yup, roar and growl to get them out the way.
Walking with dinosaurs and prehistoric beats were absolutely brilliant. Thank you bbc
This stampede is awesome, the way the Saurophaganax move out of the way just in time when of the Diplodocus is about to trample them, it's just so damn realistic and I love every of it.
That’s allosaurus not saurophaganax
5 year old allosaurus: takes down enormous sauropod that could easily kill him
5 year old human: _help i can't tie my shoe_
Kindheitserinnerungen
oh the nostalgia i used to watch this when i was 4-5 years old
Justin Lopez same
Mad Max Jurassic Editing
GOAT COMMENT
I was a spino main,we may have been in different eras but i loved the spino, shame that the dinosaur update was cancelled
it was how thegamingbeaver died as puertasaurus, getting mobbed by allosaurus players.
this is the isle allosaurus in a nutshell
I genuinely think watching these documentaries as a child made me smarter I literally spent my whole childhood gathering information whilst also enjoying something fun to watch whilst everyone else at school would watch spongebob
bob esponja gay
This documentary is the goat
I love the blur of the CGI Diplodocus, it adds a sort of realism to the whole nature documentary aesthetic of the original, like th dinosaurs are to active to have non-blurred images.
Best scene ever in the walking with ... series , (best opening still is from episode 3 )
👍
Xand W: that's true. And I respect the WWD documentary for showing them as actual animals. Nevertheless, I would like an updated version that wouldn't shit all over the original like the WWD 3D did.
The hatchet theory is disproven.
That’s it….
Also Allosaurus probably don’t have that weak bite anymore.
0:44 - 1:04
Big Al: Hey guys, look 😀 !
Big Al's friend 1: What is it, Al 🤨 ?
Big Al: I've found the sick and old Diplodocus, just look 😁 !
Big Al's friend 2: Yeah, check those big meat 😎 ! We're going for big lunch 😆 !
Big Al's friend 3: And how we supposed to do for get a meat 🤨 ? The bigger and healthier Diplo are protecting the weak like a living fortress 🤔
Big Al's friend 4: Do you have any idea or plans, Al 😅 ?
Big Al: Here's the plan 📝 , we need to separate the group and make them isolating the target we've choose 😌 . Understood 😉 ?
Big Al's friend 5: The decision is circle, you're on it, Al 😏 ! Let's do this 😎 !
3:07
Diplodocus: i like you cut G
i love this scene specially from the minute 1:47 and the soundtrack o my god its so awesome this is frome the best things bbc could created the walking with saga
1:34 “Outta my way, Pencil Neck!”
I have the entire package, "BBC's Prehistoric Earth: A Natural History"
watched it when I was 5 or 6, and if you remember "Time Of The Titans" you saw the size of a full grown Diplodocus is 5 times the size of this herd, so that tells you these Diplodocus aren't yet adults
Lol
Hocus pocus, Diplodocus
The predator's here, y'all take notice
Despite this being made 19 years ago the animation for the dinosaurs holds up really well
Lol love how the diplodcus avoids the allo and just runs also the MUSIC is what makes the video cool
I watched all these documentations when I was a kid. This is truthfully majestic work!
Oh and this deserves more views
1:34 Hi there!
It did sound like it said that
I'm watching this after 10 years... Wow....
Not the onlyone
@@Breexy4x omg wow
And to this day they’ve never made a better dinosaur programme/documentary with this amount of effort again.
