"I believe I can fly! I believe I can touch the sky!" LOL! Keep in mind this is the year BEFORE Michael Jordan finally won it (in 1987 after losing to Dominique in 1985). From that standpoint I guess we could say Julius Erving and Anthony Webb were the two dunk contest champs who exhibited "flying" in the dunk contest prior to Michael Jordan winning it even though Michael seems to get all the credit for that concept of flying while dunking AFTER winning the 1987 and 1988 dunk contests with his versions of the Julius Erving foul line slam. I feel in many ways that was a media branding thing. He got the credit for flying while dunking the most because the media scope around sports projected his brand to crazy levels in the 1980's and 1990's way beyond the media branding in any of the previous eras probably because of deeper investment into professional sports form big business entities which likely wouldn't touch sports with so much as a ten foot pole during the tape delayed days of basketball games. I'm making a wild guess here since I was born in 1985 so all I've known are basic and cable TV broadcasts of basketball games on stations like ESPN, ABC, NBC, TNT, ESPN 2, and TBS. =)

Adrenaline aside, his jumps are probably closer to 45" here. The fact he could not palm a basketball made it all the more impressive. He was a blue collar worker in a white collar world.

@@TWMWFT For me it's clearly the opposite. Not that the genetics are not very important, but it's much more about motivation than genetics in my opinion.
People wonder how can a man be so far ahead so many athletes in terms of vertical leap, even though so many athletes train super hard until they're exhausted and can't train anymore. People generally think it must be possible to be a little better than other athletes by training hard, but not **that much** better, unless you have crazy genetics. But thing is, even though you can't become that much better just by training more, you can if you train smarter. Most professional athletes already train as often as they can, but Spud Webb didn't just train more, it's mainly that he's trained smarter, and used a revolutionary training method : he focused on plyometrics. Long story short, instead of strengthening the muscles, plyometrics improve the elasticity and muscle spring. Instead of just pushing his feet hard on the floor, he focused on using his forward speed to push on his muscle spring, which made him bounce upward.
There are many revolutionary training methods that are discovered all the time, even nowadays, and in the coming years we might see other people crush all of the competition in their field by using a revolutionary training method.

Nice vertical? Nice? That is a god damn understatement. Webb had an amazing, astronomical, supercalifragilistic vertical. Also amazing is his hands were not big enough to palm the ball, so he had to improvise.

@@namnam2701 black people are genetically made for speed , their calf muscles are higher up and their Achilles tendon attaches in a different spot on the heel(I believe its lower) but this combined to make a more springy system, their legs are. Whites are not as naturally gifted in that area on average with training you can have some white people who can jump high like that it's just not as common and. On the reverse side whites are genetically built for strength, shorter arms, hips more broad, torso longer to support more muscle mass, we are naturally gifted in this area, and of course there are black people who are extremely strong as well, its just the way it goes.

The dunks weren't impressive, it was the height he could hit that made it amazing. That's crazy genetics and hard work combined. Both of those things are required to pull these dunks off at 5'7 and without being able to palm the ball. No matter how hard you train, 99.99% of people will never reach a 40+ vertical jump. Everyone can improve, but his genetics are off the charts. Genetics set a cap on how far you can go, and hard work lets you reach it.

Lebron James is 6' 9" with a wingspan of 7ft, roughly making his standing reach 8' 9". That means taking into account the size of the ball and subtracting the length of his hand (where the ball ostensibly has to be for him to dunk) Lebron only has to jump 1' 11" to be able to dunk. This goes for Michael Jordan, Dominique Wilkins, Shaq etc. Conclusion: Spud Webb is the most gifted/greatest dunk contest winner ever!
