Jordan is just the completest basketballer ever imo…perfekt height perfect muscle/weight ratio, perfect athletism, perfect skill, perfect bounce, perfect defense, perfect creativeness, perfect ball handling. And he is one of the best dunkers to boot.
I grew up during the 80's, and remember the true amazement of these athletes. I'm also amazed at being able to revisit what seemed to be new heights reached by the participants...accomplishing more than ever with the human body. Question was...what would we see next? Now, after revisiting that three of these videos, all with the participation of Domonique Wilkins, I'm left to ask the question, and even worse yet, see if I'm alone in this thought process. First off, I was a huge fan of Domonique...the human highlight with his signature windmill dunk. He was a tremendous athlete and the Slam Dunk Contest was signature made for him. If he wasn't winning, you can bet he was in the final round of two. Now, this is where I'm a little lost... With a half dozen or so participants, you get to see a decent amount of variation within each player's portfolio...except with Wilkins. In each of the three contests, he not only performs the same dunks in each of them, but the crowd reacts like they haven't seen this before. Even the announcers were saying that these dunks were worth 50 points. Wilkins would move on to the next round, and there he is again...the same style dunk. He comes in...jumps...spreads his legs...holds the ball down, with both hands, arms locked...then after performing a pump, he dunks it. After that, each of his dunks are essentially the same, except one might be a reverse...another might have him come in from the side...it's just almost no variation...and this guy is beating the likes of Jordan with these dunks. I really was at a loss. I couldn't believe the scores he was getting, or how the announcers seemed so taken aback. After that first dunk, the ones that followed had no creativity, no originality, and certainly no added degree of difficulty. Anyways, if anyone reading this has watched the '85...'86 and '88 contests, and can either agree with me, or even better, tell me what I'm not seeing. Now, if anyone should answer my call here, please only do so with remembering that we are in the context of the mid-to-late 1980's. If someone attempts to 'school' me using present criteria, it won't answer my question.
Wilkens 45 at 20:11 was the key robbery causing him to lose. His head is at the rim for the entire windmill - pure hang time! Possibly the best dunk of the contest, and still one of best windmills ever because of how he contorts his body on the throwdown along with the crushing blow to the rim. I love watching VC and others doing great windmills, but they have minimal body contortion and less art - it's all arms for those guys, and not much else.
I really think judges should have and opportunity to see these dunks in slow motion...seeing all the moving parts and the creativity behind the dunks before they score. At first glance the dunks look normal but in slow motion wow! Mike is truly one of a kind

When MJ dunk, he fly to the rims and it was even more beautiful when watch in Slow-mo....When others dunk, they fall as fast as they jump to the rim no matter how complicated the dunk was it still just a dunk.
That dunk where Mj gets a 47 in the finals is my favorite. I used to copy that dunk my sophomore year and it was just so cool to glide off 1 foot and pump it on both sides then wind it in 😎
The sideways reverse dunk that Michael Jordan does at 13:22, is by far the most underrated dunk in Slam Dunk history, and by far Michael Jordan's greatest dunk! (the actual replay of the dunk, says it all)
Julius Erving had the hang time so did Wilt Chamberlain and truth be known. Dr J did that free throw dunk and the rocking windmill years before Jordan did it,,, and I bet Chamberlain did it in the 60s facts be known.
I was 11 years old when this happened and I remember watching it and in awe of how poetic MJ's skills were at dunking. Obviously today these dunks are nothing, but at the time... they were legendary status lol... GOAT
If you watch the slo-mo replay of Wilkins' first dunk of the video you can see that when he does the double pump move bringing his arms up the force of the move literally gains him a slight increase in height .....That takes FORCE to actually propel your body weight even higher while in mid air with nothing to push against !.....Thats crazy !!!
right on, thats the name of MJ's dunk. but when you watch in slow mo MJ has his elbow in the rim, just like Vince Carter but MJ did it smoother, like a painting. and MJ did it 12 years earlier.

I used to copy that dunk my sophomore year and it was just so cool to glide off 1 foot and pump it on both sides then wind it in 😎
Bro ima need you to post a video of you doing that on your YT.

@@kkbaby30 full of sht!!!
@@danh2492 It wasn't that hard, I was 6'3" at 16 and 6'5" at 17.
Don’t worry about the trollers...a lot peeps could throw it down and still do. We all just couldn’t do as good as J. 👊🏽
The sideways reverse dunk that Michael Jordan does at 13:22, is by far the most underrated dunk in Slam Dunk history, and by far Michael Jordan's greatest dunk! (the actual replay of the dunk, says it all)
th-cam.com/video/bT5hDtoWQFM/w-d-xo.html
Amen !
Yeah, it was definitely better than the "almost free throw" dunk
Agree. His best dunk of the contest. Had to duck his head to avoid contact with the rim. Nuff said.
Wilkins dunks had more difficulty BUT Jordan’s supreme air/hang time gives him the advantage. No one else has that hang time.
Julius Erving had the hang time so did Wilt Chamberlain and truth be known. Dr J did that free throw dunk and the rocking windmill years before Jordan did it,,, and I bet Chamberlain did it in the 60s facts be known.
Thanks TH-cam. I needed this after the dismal performance of the 2022 dunk contest.
These kids will never know how badass those years and tough players were
This had to be the greatest slam dunk contest ever!!!
His foot was on the foul shot line! Incredible! Michael Jordan is the best basketball 🏀 player to ever live!
Weak in today's dunk contests
the attitude of the players is impressive.
respect, humility,
good mentality compared to today.
You're obviously not talking about Jordan 😂
Dang, amazing dunk contest...it's got the Jordan iconic dunks. Jordan looks so calm.
drexler and jordan, reason to exist, yeah, I mean it, those days are gone though for ever....
DON'T SLEEP ON SPUD WEBB , ONE OF THE SHORTEST MEN TO SLAM DUNK IN THE NBA.
He was incredible in the1986 one.
spud doing rim jobs was almost as good as passes from bj to jordan
There was just something about Jordan that I've never seen from another athlete. He had an inhuman aura.
occultist....he's a real free mason, does not matter if he's blkk, he's one of us, he does have celtic blood though.
@joe smith yeah sure, whatever you say weirdo.
@@krb0123 thanks! you have no clue about anything, I am a free mason, Michael Jordan is one.
The only reason i start knowing basketball because of u Mj
this is when jordan was in his prime time in every way , he became a air jordan by this dunk.... all time legendery
@@wyntyrmute COOL !.......Have physics contact me at it's earliest convenience please !
This is why they call it "the good old days".
When NBA had memorable moments.
i weep. "the good old days" is right
13:50 MJ does the vince carter "elbow in the rim" dunk in 1988, only gets a 47?
Tim Langenderfer honeydip
right on, thats the name of MJ's dunk. but when you watch in slow mo MJ has his elbow in the rim, just like Vince Carter but MJ did it smoother, like a painting. and MJ did it 12 years earlier.
Tim Langenderfer isn't it the MJ elbow in the rim dunk in that case?
But look at his 13:30 dunk that got 47, and he got a 50 for two identical dunks, impressive, but identical.
fuck outta here! Vince hangs on the rim by his elbow. MJ aint do that
Fantastic slam dunk contest Wilkins deserve that title
Only if he didn't stand underneath the rim doing windmills
@@wrotedog he was better on this dunk contest then Jordan powerful dunks
This dunk shaped several generations and spread basketball around the world
13:47 dude his arm was inside the rim, and you guys gave him 47???
better than Vince's dunk
They didn’t have replays...
I'm pretty sure it was a second attempt tho if you hear the commentary
Not only that, Jordan jumped so high that he had to duck his head
80s were the best time in the us
I agree 100%
In all ways.
Nah late 90s early 2000s
So much cocaine
80’s didn’t have Napster
In my opinion Jordan is the most dynamic athlete ever!!!
One word-LEGEND !!! Flying Jordan !!!
This was so pure compared to todays contest, no nonsense, just aerial acrobatics.
Great dunking contest.
Thank you for this! What a magical time it was! 😁
Beautiful! Jordan was and is the best 👌
Why doesn’t anyone here like Spud Webb? He was awesome!
Younger cats these days don't understand what the slam dunk contest meant to us. It was considered a sideshow during all star week. It didn't have the biggest sponsors for years. This is where signature shoes were introduced every year. This is where cats that had a mediocre year could show and prove. It was the one thing we looked forward to every year for years. Players would work on dunks the whole season just for this event. We used to put big money on these contests and it made February so much fun!
Man we came a long way from them booty shorts😂😂🤣🤣
