I was a heavy drinker from early 20’s to about early 40’s. My liver was swollen, even the seatbelt would irritate me and I had constant pain on my right side. I started taking mt at about 38. Average 400 mg per day. First thing I noticed was the swelling went down and was no longer grabbing at my side. Im 53 now and have no liver issues . I only drink 1 to 2 beers a night which is a significant decrease from years ago and reduced my mt intake to 175 mg every 3 days. One I will say that I have seriously benefited from milk thistle is I have not been sick in so long I can’t remember when the last time. I mean ever. No colds no flu anything. My conclusion MT is a thumbs up!

I had my gall bladder removed 2 years ago. I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease last February (2023). My NP put me on Milk Thistle ASAP. Along with changing my eating habits and exercising more and also using Apple Cider Vinegar w/lemon water, I was able to not only heal my liver but I do not need to take Ox Bile for my missing gall bladder. Milk Thistle works for me.

Hey Jared...I am about to get my gallbladder taken out (I have a 0% ejection fraction that was found with a HIDA scan). I have taken milk thistle before as a blocker/liver support for other supps that I was taking when I was working out regularly. Glad to hear that you're doing well and don't need to take Ox Bile. I've ordered it and will do a self-trial and see how it goes. Any tips/tricks for before/after? What was your recovery like? Were you an outpatient or were you admitted? Thanks...

Forget a brand! Buy some milk thistle seeds and grow them in a pot. It grows so fast and easily and is a perennial. You can eat the leaves young and once it flowers and goes to seed, harvest the seeds and make tea out of them. The stalks/stems are also edible.

I am waiting to get my blood tests back to see if my strict diet has helped my NALD. I would dearly love to lose wt. but being disabled and living with severe chronic pain it is so hard to do any exercising regardless of how mild it is. I have been much more active lately and no longer have the symptoms of GERD, IBS, no diverticulitis flares, and best of all no more esophageal reflux with aspiration! But I was so disappointed that I had not even lost 10 lbs in the last 6 months of dieting. I've never been obese in my entire life until the last 10 years (after 50). But they state on the back - "80% SILYMARIN: We have used a high strength extract that is rich in silymarin, the major active constituent contained in Milk Thistle. With 150mg of pure silymarin in every capsule, you can rest assured that this product is of the highest natural potency."
Does that mean it would be safe to take more than one capsule a day, as there's only 150mg of silymarin per capsule? Or is the stated 7500mg true?

You might consider looking into going low oxalate diet. Oxalate is a plant toxin that is found in many of the common foods we eat. In the gut it can be like little microscopic pieces of glass bouncing down your intestinal tract. One of my caregivers recently put her UC into remission after several months of a low oxalate diet based on the work of Sally K Norton and her book called toxic Superfoods. Of course full on carnivore diet is a low oxalate diet because no plants are consumed. I have been Carnivore for four years now and I am seeing some significant improvements in my health.

I can eat anything, (A&W cheddar cheese burger with fries) except white rice, and my blood glucose barely budges, even white rice though it spikes, is not drastic. My glucose remains in the "Normal" none diabetic range, through the day. Its just in the morning (fasting) it elevates into pre diabetes range. 5.7 to 6.2. All other blood test were normal. Maybe MT will push it back down. Thx for sharing. 😊😊👍👍 PS I used to take MT years ago when I was on daily acetaminophen with codeine, and was worried about liver damage. What I find even more puzzling is NAFLD's cause in my case: I have not consumed any alcohol during most of my life, though I did, foolishly, overdo it to the point of nausea a few times as a young man and some wine, infrequently and moderately, later. I have not, to my knowledge had any liver problems at all of any sort. I am now 91 yo. In 2011, my colon was punctured during a colonoscopy. After my recovery from successful colon resection, I had an ultrasount survey of my liver because my enzymes were high. A "coarse echotexture" was reported. Recent hepatic ultrasounds have not reported any potential problem, except for a stable cyst. I do not know why I should have had NAFLD aa shown after my colon resection. I have taken milk-thistle but do not know if it has been of any benefit to me. I have taken it from time to time in 160mg daily doses.

NAFLD is caused by sugar. I've got it and only a chinese doctor picked it up, now western doctor would even look at me because I don't drink yet I have a large gut that sticks out, I have elevated Gamma GT in my blood work and I have gall stones. I also believe prolonged stress being a single mum and a high school teacher have contributed to my fatty liver. I found out at 26 and I have had to research myself on what to do and how to support this. I only recently came across MT and hope this will improve my blood work next time and cutting out all processed foods.

"Colon punctured during a colonoscopy." Yikes! 😮 I hope they didn't charge you for the colonoscopy or the repairs to your colon. It sounds like an awful experience but you've been proactive and I hope that you're feeling much better.
