    It definitely is a racist gesture; kind of along the lines how non-Asian individuals often assume an Asian person is Chinese.
    For example, a lot of Spanish speaking individuals will generalize Asian people as "Chino" ... as in the Spanish word for a Chinese person.
    These kinds of things is racist but it could also just be that some people are ignorant and uneducated so they go with stereotypes. But that doesn't excuse them for making just gesture or saying certain comments.

    • @newchapterasmr
      @newchapterasmr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    • @12nelly1
      @12nelly1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      Or it could just mean that there are very few asians in Europe and the majority of them are chinese. If i didnt grow up around asian people there is no way for me to know all the groups of people in Asia. Just the same way asian people group europeans into white, blonde, blu eyed people, without really knowing the groups of people in Europe. Oh and saying that you know germans, italians, british, french or spanish is still wrong, because that is only a 1/5 of the countries in Europe. But in this age of technology we are living today it is indeed easier to learn, but you cant ask this from people above 50s. Its all about being understanding you know :D

      "It definitely is a racist gesture; kind of along the lines how non-Asian individuals often assume an Asian person is Chinese."
      I'm sorry, but by definition racist is: "a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races". Assuming someone is from a certain country or another has nothing to do with racism, has no underlying meaning. Where I live asian people are only from China, therefore it's pretty normal to assume someone who's passing by might be chinese. Assuming someone's from a certain country is not racist, therefore I hope people won't get offended or think others want to offend them because of that. Different story would be calling "chinese" someone knowing he's not, maybe to belittle he's own traditions. There's not only words, but also the intentions of people to take into consideration. (Not sure if this makes sense in English)

They could’ve just help up a korean flag and said thank you Korea if they wanted to, but thought it would be funny to do that gesture instead. So tell me, if the team that won were black players, would they also paint themselves black and say thank you? I’m sure some of them knew that it would be considered racist and they continued to do it. These kind of people are just ignorant about the world. Even if they had good intentions with it, if a korean person finds it offensive, you should stop. Please educate yourselves....no Asian person really likes that gesture. 앞으로 하지 마세요 멕시코 ~

      OCASM did you even read my comment? I KNOW that they weren’t intentionally trying to be malicious, but seeing as this is a racial gesture, it’s not acceptable, and they should learn from it. Among Mexican people, maybe this is funny to them and it’s harmless with them, but seeing as how Asian people are taking offense to it, they shouldn’t continue to do it, so I’m hoping they learned their lesson. If they wanna do things like that, they should do it amongst themselves and their friends, but they uploaded this so the whole internet could see it and they really didn’t think that it would be offensive? I’m not being a crybaby, I’m saying that this isn’t okay. Even if their intentions were “good”, they didn’t consider about how Koreans would feel about it, so I think they weren’t thinking at all. They should just be more careful in the future.

You should watch a video that Vice News added last week on their TH-cam page about a Yemeni refugee who had his American visa cancelled and is now trying to find another country for refuge. People in mexico should defenitely be more educated on that matter. Even though they didn't knew this is not okay and did not mean any harm.
    But asian countries have a lot to catch up, too. So at least black face on tv can be reduced. But other than that... calling those asian countries out for portraying other ethnicities in a mockery way in TV is too early. Because it happens a lot in europe and the States, too. And don't judge if you country isn't any better!

      15 years ago none knew this things were considered racist in other parts of the world, a lot of people here already know this is wrong, but still some people don't see the difference between dressing as a german with blonde hair, really white skin and using their accent in a tv skit from this, they are middle age so they aren't really familiar with the internet, and of course that isn't an excuse, is just pure ignorance, the same way some elderly people are racist towards foreigners in Korea.

  • @CeaserMadrazo
    @CeaserMadrazo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +182

    It seems pretty clear to me that Mexicans are using this gesture as sort of a "Thank you, Korea!" but since the gesture has negative historical context, it's understandable why Koreans would be offended.
    I have affinity for both Mexico and Korea since I've lived in/near both of them, and have made friends with people from both. So this is kinda awkward and a bit of a bummer for me to see. So I'm gonna say my peace.
    As a mid-20's white American dude who has some experience in both cultures, here's my take on it...
    (I know nobody asked for it, but hey, you don't have to read it if you don't want to.)
    Mexican social culture, from my experience with it, has a certain bluntness, and a certain humor to it. Race and racism seemed to be a lot less of an issue in the Southwest Arizona area I lived in, where the heavy majority of the population was Mexican. This's because people were less easily offended by things that, while more sensitive people might be offended by them, were supposed to be lighthearted in nature, such as quips regarding stereotypes. (I heard plenty of stereotypical white guy or "gringo" jokes during my time there, and I heard plenty of jokes made about Mexican stereotypes. Hell, I would hear Mexicans themselves joke about Mexican stereotypes. But rarely was anyone offended, because for them, the humor was all in good fun.) The bluntness I mentioned is something I got used to very quickly in Arizona. Mexicans don't beat around the bush. If they have something to say, they say it. Boldly. There's hardly any embellishment when speaking to someone from Mexico. Everything's to the point. People in this environment develop a very thick-skinned nature, ergo, what some others might take as mildly racist quips, will be seen by them as a lighthearted joke, as mentioned above. There's no ill-intent from it. These two traits, in my humble opinion, stem from Mexico's history. There are a lot of tales of hardship in Mexico's history, and a lot of eras where the Mexican people really had to hunker down and endure hell in order to keep going. But they do. That's why Mexicans take pride in their heritage. Despite all the hardship their people have endured throughout the last 500 years, Mexico is still a standing nation. The people are strong-willed, and they know how to persevere through tough times.
    Keeping all this in mind, it's not like there are many times when Korean culture and Mexican culture have intertwined in any major way. Korea and Mexico have different histories. Korea has its own history and hardships that are equally deserving of respect, but the difference lies in the mindset of the people. In Mexico, the endurance was laced with humor. Mexicans found a way to laugh through the tragedies. It became a standard. Koreans, on the other hand, had more of a poker-faced "get it done" mentality when working through the tragedies. I see many Koreans who are going through unbelievably stressful situations, exhausted, sick, mentally and emotionally drained, etc. But they never show any signs of disdain for their work, despite going through these stressful and exhausting situations. And when I ask how they do it, they just say, "I do it because it's my job." They are able to put their stress, exhaustion, and baggage to the side when there's work to do. I'm actually astounded by it at times. Their pride comes from their unity as a people, and the principles, morals, and work ethic that historically have made them stand out from other countries. Koreans historically were the ones that defended themselves but never attacked another nation, never asked for aid, but was always willing to lend a hand, and valued humility and respect.
    These two histories have their similarities; there are reasons to be proud of both of them. But the difference in mindset is what has led to the controversy.
    Mexicans made a gesture that, to their own people, is simply a lighthearted way of saying, "Thanks, Korea. You guys rock." Whereas Koreans look at the slant-eyed gesture being done and take it as a sign of disrespect. Since Koreans have a high value for respect, a sign of disrespect is going to be offensive to them. Even if there was no ill-intent behind the gesture.
    So, my TL;DR for both sides is this:
    To Mexicans: I'd recommend you acknowledge that the slant-eyed gesture is a generally offensive term to Asian people, and Korea might not take kindly to it.
    To Koreans: I'd recommend you take into consideration that given Mexico's social culture, their use of this gesture is actually a form of flattery, and they do not mean any offense.
    Whew... Well, there's my peace. I hope I didn't trigger anybody. Y'all are my two favorites after my home country. I love y'all.
    I hope you can be friends again soon!

      ^this guy gets it. You cant really blame these mexicans for not knowing that this gesture might be offensive, since there barely are any asians in mexico to begin with. On top of that they meant it with a friendly intent but didn't think (which mexicans don't always do in this type of situations, since its all fun and jokes XD). You also can't blame Koreans for example for thinking that all mexicans are brown, since it is somewhat true (majority of people are mestizos). It's just lack of experience, nothing racist behind it. ^^

    Another important fact that i think must be mentioned: when That happened, most of Mexican football fans celebrated on the streets while saying: Corea, hermana, ya eres mexicana. (Sister Korea, you are already Mexican, it rhymes in Spanish)
    They even went to Korean restaurants, started to congratulate to every Korean they met (even at my college, there was this Korean exchange student and my classmates congratulated him on Facebook as he was responsible of that event). Mexican football fans even went to the Korean embassy to celebrate outside of the building and started to sing in joy.
    Most people who showed this slant-eye, are not aware of culture appropriateness, they couldn’t find cultural proper way; some of them are very very very ignorant, as they barely read or are poorly informed about other topics rather their love to football. Some are racist, but not all. There are some Mexicans who are very interested in Asian culture and Korea culture. There are some Mexicans (and Koreans, I believe) who don’t even like football, like myself. If we want to eradicate racism, we should start by treating the person as he/she is. Not assuming anything from the labels we carry. If you are going to meet a Mexican, don’t assume until you actually meet him/her. And I hope some of my compatriots understand that this gesture is not well-received. A racist will never represent entirely their country of origin.

    As an American, I would never make a slant-eye gesture and not think SOME people would find it offensive. You're picking a body characteristic that is different and trying to focus on it. No one wants to be characterized by their body, especially when one eye-shape is no better than another. These people were just trying to celebrate but they should consider how to do it appropriately in the future!

    Personally I feel like we shouldnt throw the word racist around so easily. people label everything with 'racist' that they've forgotten the meaning of the word and what it REALLY looks like. Yes this is offensive in the highest degree, but lets call it that and not use 'racist' unless that person expresses hatred, ill treatment, or violence against someone because of their skin color/nationality/race. If you look at treatment of people during the civil rights era and compare it to now, you can't use the same word to apply to both.

Korea still does black face on variety shows, my mutual told me recently they did black face on the Philippines tv too. In Singapore there are people on tv who imitate the uncouth China mainlanders or Indians. It’s everywhere. Ignorance is prevalent when there a lack of exposure to other cultures. It should be a subject or course in school to be honest. We need to educate people from a young age about respecting race and culture and using it as a comedy tool.

    I’ve been in love with Korean culture for almost 20 years now and when I was much younger I had heard that Koreans could have eye surgery to make their eyes look more western and at the time I had wondered if I could do the opposite and make my eyes look more Korean. However I have been consuming so much Korean media that I often find that the physical differences between them and me have completely disappeared in my mind and I don’t even notice them at all anymore until a video like this pops up lol. It’s definitely rude to make this gesture but I doubt (or would like to think) that they weren’t thinking about it at the time and meant no harm by it though that certainly isn’t an excuse. I think we all need to think a bit more before we act. That being said I can remember making that gesture in the mirror to myself when I was younger wondering what I would look like if i could have gotten such a surgery lol.

      I mean, just look a Momoland's music video for the song BAAM. The girls appear dressed in such a way that could easily be taken as an act of racism towards mexicans (you know, sombreros, big moustaches resembling those of the key figures of the Mexican Revolution a hundred years ago and overall stereotypical garments). But in all honesty, that's not worth losing our minds for because they probably didn't intend to insult anyone; they're just kinda ignorant, just as the mexicans doing the slanted eyes gesture were.

      Alvaro Zacarías I'm sorry, but why wearing a Sombrero and fake mustache would be considered racist?

    • @LifeVision22
      @LifeVision22 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, "racist" might not be the right word here because it's more about culture than it's about race (so, I guess that's on me), but it is without a doubt a nasty act of cultural appropriation. First of all, the whole practice of wearing sombreros and fake mustaches implies a superficial, ignorant and quite basic representation of Mexican culture, which needless to say, is in fact extremely rich and diverse. Right off the bat, you could tell that such a reductionist account of the history and culture of a country that has gone through thick and thin to thrive can easily be considered offensive. Furthermore, sombreros and the likes have traditionally been a way in which other countries, north and south of Mexico, have mocked Mexicans, portraying an outdated caricature of a community that, despite having its flaws, is extremely hardworking and caring for others.
      I can see why for a foreigner wearing sombreros could be thought as a fun or friendly way to pay homage to Mexicans (or whatever it is the supposedly non-inappropriate reason to do it), but it's really not. I guess what it all comes to is that this things, just as the slanted eyes gesture, are offensive, regardless of wether it is because you're mocking a phenotypical trait of a race or because you are mocking an aspect of a culture. In the end, no one should try to put themselves on the high moral ground as long as we (Mexicans, Koreans and pretty much everyone) keep condoning this demeaning behaviors.

    Yes offensive. I actually find this interesting. Growing up as a little girl in Nigeria, we saw girls/boys with slanted eyes as being beautiful actually. We use to call it 'cat eye'. So sometimes, we did our eyes like that hoping it'll become permanent like an Asian eye lol. It's informative to know that Koreans find this offensive; so the world needs to know to stop. I wish the people in question went on Google and just searched for how to say 'Thank You' in Korean rather than making the slanted eyes! We learn everyday :) Thanks Asian Boss!

Because pointing out someone's appearance is rude and black people think it's not pleasant at all. We don't even have to say about the 'harmless" intent or tell Koreans to be more generous.

      criticalhard I’m Nigerian, and it pisses me off when people like you keep mentioning blackface under this video. Yes SOME Koreans have done blackface but it has NOTHING to do with this video. Racism is wrong period. I don’t wish for “revenge” against SOME Koreans for being racist, I’ll stand up against racism whenever for happens. It’s embarrassing actually ... it seems most blacks hold on to old grudges wayyyy too long compared to other races. Many people have mentioned that most of the perpetrators of blackface have been condemned. But people like you CHOOSE to ignore the facts just to play the victim. We have radical groups like the KKK in America, but we know that most of our population condemn them. How would you feel if people outside America claimed that “nobody cared” about the KKK all because their ignorant ass hasn’t even lived here to know?

Also, Blackface, which is sometimes done in comedy skits for variety shows, and the use of the "N" word.

I talked about this issue with my co-worker (also Mexican), and asked if the gesture is racist. He said yes. In my case, my first impression of the issue wasn't that it was racist but that it is an immature thing to do, not something that I would expect from an adult. And one thing for sure was that I'd like to hear the Korean perspective, and I then I ran into this video, and I'm glad I did, because I learned from this video. What struck me was when black-face was mentioned.

    It’s kind of sad that the positive side of this story wasn’t said with the fact that *some* Mexicans/other Latinos made did this gesture, some with no ill intent, just pure ignorance and those with the intent to mock.
    I am so sorry that some of my Mexican people did this. But that is not to say that those that did this gesture didn’t receive backlash. You can probably search this but on a Spanish tv channel there is a morning show called ‘despierta America’ and two of the people who were on that show made the racist gesture and were indefinitely suspended from the show.

    Here's the real matter of fact. Cultural differences will make you perceive the gesture differently but no matter where you're at, you know it's used to refer to Asians. As a Mexican, I say we play around too much, our jokes and conversations would offend most of the world but we do it so constantly that we're desensitized to it - it's an everyday thing for the greater part of the country, not all. A foreigner or outsider might see how we verbally joke with family and friends as harassment it's how we get along.
    I would, however, agree that putting that on social media is stupid because unless the world knows you as a playful person, there will be backlash. Doing that in the states is pretty unacceptable under any circumstance because we're such a blend of cultures and have been educated on socially acceptable do's and don'ts to approaching different cultures.

    I am Mexican, living in Mexico city and I HATE football with all my heart. I´m really ashamed of what other mexican people do when it has to do with football because they let themselves go without thinking in the consequences of their actions.
    I´m not gonna defend them, since they are guilty, even if their intention was not that, they should apologize, even if I know they are not gonna do it anyways.....
    For example, the majority of football fans love to shout "Ehhhhh, puto" in stadiums, but that is an homophobic and transphobic word that hurts me and other non-heterosexual and non-cisgender people, even though they say that´s "not their intention".
    What I please ask you is not to say things that could hurt people that actually support fight against any type of oppression by saying that "all mexicans" or "mexican people...." as if we were all the same. Korean people are not the same either.
    Racism, classism, homophobia, sexism, transphobia, nb-phobia, ableism, etc are worldwide problems, no country is exempt from this and we should point out whenever someone does something oppressive, but you can´t point out the racism of one person attacking with more racism (and no, reverse racism is not real) or homophobia, or something else.
    Imagine that an european calls out koreans because of their eyes and they suddenly start attacking this person´s sexuality, gender, physical appearance (calling that person fat, for example), etc.That´s feeding discrimination. Yes, we have the absolute right to defend ourselves when somebody discriminates us, but remember that when you fight discrimination with more oppression you are not only attacking that person, you are attacking a whole group that did nothing to you. Just direct your defense and attacks toward that person, not others.
    This is coming from an agender and pomosexual person that has lived all their live fighting against oppression and "machismo".
    Love ya.

    Hello I am a mexican living in Korea and when I saw this reactions from my fellow people, I honestly felt embarrassed. On the other hand, there was also many other Mexicans showing appreciation to koreans in unimaginable ways (like the huge group of Mexicans who went to the korean embassy in mexico city to thank the head chief with mariachi and tequila). Mexico is a warm hearted society which still has a lot to learn about respecting others cultures and differentiate what is proper and what is not. I also really like how the interviewed people responded with objectivity and intelligence, unfortunately this people dont reflect the average thinking among korean population, I myself have been denied entrance to a place in Seoul for the simple fact of being a foreigner, korean people is specially racist towards black people and they show a really limited capacity to integrate foreigners into their culture. So I totally agree with this answers but at the same time, I think in order to judge others vision you need to clean your house first.
