  • Why East Asian eyes are smaller (relatively) | Optometrist Explains
For the purpose of this video I will be referring to East Asian eyes as just ‘Asian’ eyes
East Asian eyes also have the nickname of 'small eyes' or 'slanted eyes'
Today we talk about what anatomical structures make an Asian eyelid, into an Asian eyelid.
The plastic surgery craze in Korea always made me wonder why there is such a high demand of double eyelid surgeries being performed over there. If you've ever had the same thought hopefully this video will help answer some questions

Same here, but I think it’s snow. I think the extra eyelid fat is an adaptation to protect the eye from the cold and the “squint” to prevent snow blindness. But idk, just my guess. I’d like to actually know.

Your approach to diversity is constructive. Discussing the scientific origins and evolution of human traits is the best antidote to mockery. And it cultivates a desire for understanding. Of course, nothing will, nor need, extinguish human preferences for certain traits. We should still be free to prefer certain traits over others. But we can teach that most traits are circumstances of birth for which we are choiceless recipients.

As a science nerd and artist, I really, REALLY appreciated this video. In particular, I’m always trying to learn more about the structure of different body parts so I can draw it better. Further, with the amount of plastic surgery these days and photoshop I find it harder for me to know at a glance if what I’m drawing is realistic or representative of a specific ethnicity (the biggest one probably being trying to know if I’m drawing a realistic or “idealized” Asian eye.) Now I better know what to be looking for and can hopefully adjust edited photographs to more accurately depict a subject. I also love this video because it showcases how beautifully, uniquely, and wonderfully made we each are. I actually find drawing and depicting the differences between people far more rewarding, challenging and inspiring as an artist. I hate it when depictions of humans become oversimplified and every subject looks the same. Even identical twins are different (I should know, I am one!). Finding the nuances and differences between people (big or small) is what I find can truly bring a picture to life. Anyways, all that is to say thank you for going to the literature and not being afraid to explain this. I know I certainly learned a lot and I am eager to learn more. Knowledge truly is power!

Yes. If you go to the Southeast Asia which is tropical, you will find that the native population tend to have bigger rounder eyes. This is unlike the Northeast Asians which includes Mongolians, Koreans, Japanese and Chinese. Even in Europe, I tend to find that Southern Europeans have bigger rounder eyes whereas Northern Europeans tend to have thinner wider eye shapes.

    • @sleepyhead6468

@Jamel Carpenter Well the human genome is a wonderful thing I guess. There are times where a phenotype occurs due to random mutations. There are times when environmental forces encourages phenotypical evolution and mutations. The eyes getting smaller and hooded is definitely encouraged by colder regions. But there are also times where this phenotype can occur due to random mutation. There are many pathways for how a certain phenotype is expressed. Just for example, light skin phenotype trait is actually expressed via different genetic routes between East Asian people and European people. When East Asians have light skin, the genes that encode it is different from the genes that give Europeans their light skin.

Great video! I love all of your videos, by the way. Back in middle school, one of my friends, who was from China (I'm black American), told me about wanting to get an eyelid fold, and I was so confused as to why. First, I always though her eye shape was beautiful! Also, I was baffled about why anyone felt the need for an extra eye fold. As an adult, my friend got the surgery - she's still beautiful, but I'm a bit sad she got it. I'm always sad when I see people getting this surgery; after all, as human beings, our unique features make us beautiful.

Actually, I did it (flip the eyelid over) when I was younger (as many children here in France), and I still can do it very easily. But it is quite painful. When I do it I feel the inside part of the connective tissue drying up and getting colder due to the ambiant temperature, and then it dries out so fast that it hurts, in a few seconds.
Anyway, about the subject of the video, this is the best explanation I ever heard about the differences between asian eyes and other peoples eyes. This was very interesting, thank you very much !

We use simpler-futuristic lines in our art/work too, like soft-lined cars, simpler buildings and so on. Your eyes are beautiful the way they are, you DON'T have to do surgery (double eyelid or whatever) to your eyes. Kids at school will find something-anything to start kidding with the others and eyes are the 1st thing they notice. But that doesn't mean that they don't like your eyes. They are just kids kidding. Your eyes again are beautiful, futuristic, serious, with a sweet "pain" in them. I love them the way they are and i think you can be proud for them. After all.. all eyes are God's work..🙂😍👍

I study genetic anthropology and the "Asian eyes" - along with some other common East Asian physical traits like thicker hair shafts, more sweat glands, characteristic shovel teeth, and smaller breasts are thought to have first evolved around 35,000 years ago in what is now central China. These characteristics spread massively across the East Asia region after the Last Glacial Maximum about 20,000 years ago and displaced more Basal East Eurasian populations in the process. We have an approximate idea of when and where "East Asian eyes" first appeared, but we don't know *why* exactly they evolved.

I've always wondered if asians have higher FOV due to lower nose bridge.
Or wouldn't there at least be a greater angle where there would be depth perception?
A higher nose bridge blocks what one with a lower nose bridge could see. I wonder if that inner fold messes up that coolness.
That would be a real evolutionary benefit I think - to accurately judge the position of something coming at you at a wider angle.
I wonder what benefits and tradeoffs the high nose bridge went for. Maybe crumple zone like modern cars hahahaa.

I know why the skin of subsaharan Africans is dark, but I have no clue as to why Asian eyes are slanted. Is the environment on the east coast of Asia somehow different from the environment in western Europe? How are slanted eyes advantageous in east Asia? I don't think westerners have trouble seeing in east Asia because of different lighting conditions, what could it be? Are there any theories about that?

    • @sleepyhead6468

Actually why is it called slanted? I never understood that description. I don't see any slants at all. It's just the flesh above the eye is thicker and hence the upper eyelid doesn't fold and create that crease.

    • @sleepyhead6468
      @sleepyhead6468 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Most likely the ice age caused it. Because if you compare Southeast Asians and Northeast Asians, both diverged a long time ago but used to be from the same basal East Asian population group. Yet those that migrated North ended up with lighter skin and along with it, the distinctive "Asian" eyes while those that remained in the South like the Malays, Thais kept their large eyes and their skin got as light as brown. Even in Europe, you can find that the Europeans with more "Asian-looking" eye shapes tend to be Northern Europeans. Look at the Irish actor Barry Keoghan. Whereas compare that with the Italians or Greeks and you find that the eyeshapes are distinctively different. So the cold has definitely got something to do with the evolution of this eyelid shape.

I think why this trend is growing in popularity is not just because of western tv/movies but a bigger reason is because of anime.
Anime has mainly Asian characters but they all have big and sometimes blue eyes that look more "western". And because of the popularity of anime in Asian culture and the fact that almost every child grows up watching anime it's not hard to see that these kids develop a complex. And thinking that their eyes aren't beautiful because all the characters that are supposed to the attractive ones or the heroes all have bigger eyes.

Why the "other eyes" are called : Caucasian", the extra lid skin, epicanthal folds, extra puffiness etc DID spread in Europe. It seems that the only area which 'escaped' this DNA is the Mediterranean sea? I have mainly Mediterranean & Hungarian-German DNA and I have 0 extra skin. Our daughter's & my upper eyelid is thin and 'stretched', it doesn't fall into our eyelid, thus: we look awake and attend. My partner is from Jew Iraq origin, he & our son inherited the Asian upper fat puffiness. The puffiness causes the eye to look more close, even tired, although our son has big eyes. The puffiness tends not to be equal? which causes one eye to appear sometimes closer than the other.
I wouldn't consider the eye lid surgeries to be "crazy", as people in the west also go through surgeries to remove extra upper lid, which cause them to look tired and sometimes even it is hard to open the eye, e.g. in cases of Ptosis.

Not sure why some asian have small eyes. Based on natural selection traits that assisted in natural selection procssess persist. We do see alot of slanted eyes among korean, japan, Mongolians, south east china, north east china, but not south west china, south china, mid to south vietnam, laos, cambodia, thailand, maylasian, but then there's Singaporeans and other islands close to that region. If we think it helps with sun light reflection onto sea surface or sky cloud when elevated high on mountains, then it would be existence of this trait in european countries, but there are little to none of europeans at high altitude with slanted eyes, but then high altitude and high elevation in north canada and north russiaan people do have slanted eyes.

Pulling the eyes isn't about stretching the eyes to tell Asians that they should have wider eyes, it's an _imitation_ of Asian eyes, from a perception that they have an elongated shape.
I think if a European made fun of you for having "small eyes", they must have learned it from an Asian, because the European perception is that they seem more closed, not shorter from end to end or smaller in every dimension.
