Can't say for Michael here but a lot of drummers use the KP2 type.

Michael is a supreme technician!! Incredible drummer and such a brilliant teacher, got to see more of him.
BTW if you see this Michael thanks for making it totally clear about the middle finger and thumb. I began Scottish drumming c1970 so was taught quite a different grip and technique ( still see a few good old timers using it).
But you, Simon Grant and my Canadian friend Blair 'Buz' Brown have convinced me to come over to the dark side😀

*Thanks for confirming my hunch about Scots' pipe and drum corps side technique.* Given my penchant for deliberately choking down on outsize sticks such as the Vic Firth® SRHN Corpsmaster® nylon-tips - a severe-duty version of Chicago Jazz technique on the relatively weak calfskins of that era with long middleweight wood-tips - I'm actually working on adapting Scots' snare technique to all-genres drumkit; my Tama®/Hoshino® New Imperialstar™ seven-piece packs Evans®/D'Addario® EC2S tom and HD snare batters for the purpose, tuned to the shells' Helmholtz frequencies for maximum performance. (Likewise the kick, with an EMADHW batter.) The third finger on the right and thumb on the left leave both wrists free for accents when needed and the overall muscle stress better distributed over the duration of the concert.

Hey man, i play the side drum and the drum kit and i can assure you that while this technique works for tight heads like on your snare and probably your high tom, when you get down to your slacker heads you will have to revert back to the wrist again.
