If you're into drumming or have any knowledge of the subject, boring is the last comment you'd make about this man. he's a genius in his field and one of the best players in the World.
YOU Sir, are just incredible. I really think I am going to Quit and learn how to Knit. I am just amazed and delighted to be able to watch and learn and understand. Thank You, Mr. Kilpatrick.
JK is a top,TOP CLASS act. I remember him playing in the SHOTTS drum corps at the Cowal Gathering in his school blazer. I think he was 14 years old. He is a great guy and has always been approachable.
Great start off for anyone, I wish I'd had him to train me when I was 16 in our band at Harrogate Army Apprentices College. I normally practised with the pipe-band drummers but probably the best Mama-Papa roll I'd seen. Nicely done Sir....
That is quite the best sticks on snare drum playing, control and speed I have ever seen. I'm torn between giving up drumming for ever or going to try and practice his techniques. Fantastic stuff.
It can take a lifetime to get as good as the man himself. Expert application and no doubt a ton of long hours practice. If i get half as good in the traditional style I'll be over the moon! 👏🙏💙
You are just amazing at snare drumming. I have my own snare drum, and practice pad, I almost practice everyday with my good fried jamie brownlie he is a bagpiper.
"When you spend some time about practicing [...]" - holy fuck, I could spend my whole life about practicing and will never be as good as Jim! Unbelievable! An idol to me!
This video has saved me headaches as I thought my pipeband grip didn't use the index finger. This is a great freeing of the mind, after doing years of rudiments using the index finger. Thanks Jim
Jim Kilpatrick is an amazing drummer, hell he was my examiner in my Standard Grade Music class in high school, the man must have liked what he seen and heard coz he gave me top marks and even said my drum pieces where of a higher level than i was getting graded on, but thats not why im commenting on here, i just thought id point out that the drum he is using has a loose snare or two or what me and my band members know as a rattley drum, but that doesnt matter to jim it could sound like a biscuit tin and he would still make it sound good
I know I am not a pro by no means and can't play this technique very well but I feel like having a really tight drumhead helps as the rebound assists in the bounce to help your fingers to push the stick back down. I have practiced extensively on getting my double strokes down and can't seem to get past 130 bpm with basically letting go of the stick and let just the index and thumb to hold on and let the stick do the work. I can go really fast but it's not as loud as the slower bpm technique. Idk if you know what I'm talking about but I didn't really try to employ this technique until later in life. I'm wondering if my twitch muscles aren't flexible enough anymore to achieve the proper technique needed to play fast doubles.
That left-handed sixteenth note thing is basically identical to how the Bridgemen snareline did the sixteenth notes from 1980-1983 in their drum features; the two strokes with the thumb plus two strokes with the index finger.
Superb!, Wow! Here's my situation I'm a left-handed drummer and I'm trying to play my kit, traditional style everything's turned around backwards which I'm totally comfortable with I would like to see if you mr. Kirpatrick, or any of the other drummers/percussionist out there could give me a few pointers the quickest way to get my right hand in shape to accomplish my goal. Thank you Robbi Gandara
I was scrolling through comments saying he's insanely good and I was like really I don't understand then I heard something fast and I was like ooh he's playing then I looked up and saw it was with one hand that part was 4:38
Bobby Thompson former drummer rest in peace his left hand grip is a lot different than what you're doing he would press the thumb against the index and middle finger straight out and curl the pinky gave excellent control he's taught that too many world champion from the Buick Wars throughout the country there were books available with Bobby Thompson and Jon dollan who developed the back sticking technique he was a good friend of mine also rest in peace John I like they're many books out their traditional rudimental drumming in United States
Does the batter head of a pipe band snare sound different than the batter head of a marching band snare head? I find that the top head of pipe band snares sound different than the top head of marching band snares.
Evan Tarvis yeah i though i must have been doing it wrong but Jim shows clearly that using the finger is a jazz technique. I'm practicing both from now on!
I wouldn't be so sure. Jojo Mayer is one of the most respected drum set players of recent times, possibly even in the pantheon of the all time greats. His technique and control is just otherworldly. I would put him on par with Jim, albeit they play different styles. Jim himself would tell you that Jojo is one of the greats - the two have done clinics together in the past. If you get a chance to see Jojo's DVD on hand technique, I suspect you will find yourself quite astounded.
Hahaha! LOLOLOL! Yeah I know it. I don't know why is Mangini considered as the fastest. Jojo would definitely humiliate Mangini with just a single hand! XD
Threepace, I agree with you that Jojo is phenominal drum set player...head and shoulders above just about any others..and just for share talent it would need someone alot more knowledgeable than us to truely separate him and Jim..but, as far as styles go - Jim definately is a more technical drummer..elite pipe band drumming is the most technical. You won't see the technicality unless you either see Jim playing at the worlds etc with his core or solo in the worlds, via gusweb. My honest opinion
What a strange comment. You put a question mark after "Lol" (which should be "LOL" as it is a venerable acronym), then come out with an ex-cathedra statement that you neither back up with proof, nor show that you even know about the myriad snare drumming styles. Perhaps you are still just a kid.
This is a common issue with drummers, why does it have to be the most technical, id rather listen to a good pipe band and drum corps than some college band.
Who cares who is the quickest..it is possible this Jojo Mayer may be quicker (although doubtful), but I would bet my last dollar that Kilpatrick is more polished, accomplished and is ahead in technicality anyday...
I have 2 early TDR's. 15 in. Models. Truly, the loudest snares ever made. Never was a fan of these popcorn snares. They just don't sound right for this old dude! Cheers!
that accented singles pattern at the end..... OMG.
Incredible
He is still one of the best drummers out there, and a down to earth, thoroughly good guy to go with it.
Very sophisticated playing
As I am a piper I've never realized how complex drummers are. This is pretty awesome, it makes me want to learn it now.
Kilpatrick.
same 😂
I am an absolute beginner and I really appreciate the "once you've spent some time ... ". Thanks very much for sharing your skill.
An amazing drummer who is not afraid to share. The good ones always do. Of particular note for me was the use of thumb and forefinger, just superb.
Thanks for that!
4:30... okay, you can do this. 4:38... insanity!
Right? The man is a beast. Mad respect.
JK is a top,TOP CLASS act. I remember him playing in the SHOTTS drum corps at the Cowal Gathering in his school blazer. I think he was 14 years old. He is a great guy and has always been approachable.
Unbelievable. You, Mr. Kilpatrick are unbelievable. To me, you are the Buddy Rich of Pipe Drumming. What you can do with the left hand is phenominal.
I took lession from you and Alex in 1978 so proud to have met you both
Great start off for anyone, I wish I'd had him to train me when I was 16 in our band at Harrogate Army Apprentices College. I normally practised with the pipe-band drummers but probably the best Mama-Papa roll I'd seen. Nicely done Sir....

"Now with the left hand, there's two or three ways you can play"
No Jim, that's just you.
I realize yours is an old comment, but it’s so true. He’s one of a kind.
I was taught in the army by beats, every time we messed up we'd get beat with the drum majors mace or pace stick the mad bastard
This is simple the easiest and best explanation of grip I have ever seen marvellous.
Whomever said this is boring is certainly NOT a student of percussion let alone music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
"Whomever" is used when it's the object; it's "whoever said" because it's the subject.
Whom or who said that is a tit. Drumming boring as if
The Myth...The Legend! Other kids growing up wanted to be like some soccer or rugby star. I wanted to be like Jim Kilpatrick!
You are just amazing at snare drumming. I have my own snare drum, and practice pad, I almost practice everyday with my good fried jamie brownlie he is a bagpiper.
Your a good drummer Jim like your Work
Thanks kierain
I have been playing drums for 20 years and that was amazing hand work there. And enjoyable to watch. Thanks for the demonstration
"When you spend some time about practicing [...]" - holy fuck, I could spend my whole life about practicing and will never be as good as Jim! Unbelievable! An idol to me!
What perfect technique. Thanks for this great video!
Glad you liked it!
This video has saved me headaches as I thought my pipeband grip didn't use the index finger. This is a great freeing of the mind, after doing years of rudiments using the index finger. Thanks Jim
Good video. Very instructional. I love the sound of Remo drum heads.
Thanks very much for your feedback.
Great lesson!
that was great to see up close like that with the thumb and finger control thanks again !
Looks so easy & so challenging to do well.
Thank you
this is the best video about this !! thank you!!
A grand master.
Wow....great technique and teaching methods
Just bought one of these snare drums with the blue shell. Waiting for it to arrive.
Tremendous player. Thanks for posting.
some neat and impressive work there !!
That snare sounds great!
Incredible!!! Very inspiring!! Thank you!
Amazing stick control sir
amazing!

That's Awesome finger control !!!
Okay, I have seen him and heard of him but will take a proper look at him and get back to you with my thoughts.
It's like watching a magician. After you have seen it all without blinking, you find yourself saying; how in the hell did he just do that?
That left-handed sixteenth note thing is basically identical to how the Bridgemen snareline did the sixteenth notes from 1980-1983 in their drum features; the two strokes with the thumb plus two strokes with the index finger.
This guy is a beast
Great stuff
Braw wee lesson on the trad snare techniques!! Thanks.
His index finger and thumb on his left hand are like another set of hands. my god Jim
Jim was born with sticks in his hands.
This guy is A GOD
Remo #1
Phew! thats incedible!
Wonderful

Omg brilliant
D'rum steck
Does the batter head of a pipe band snare sound different than the batter head of a marching band snare head? I find that the top head of pipe band snares sound different than the top head of marching band snares.
It is tuned to a much higher tension, and also has a second set of snares under the top head, as well as the bottom.
beast mode
oh, good, I thought playing with my thumb was a bad thing. what a relief.
it is, unless you do it like that!
Evan Tarvis yeah i though i must have been doing it wrong but Jim shows clearly that using the finger is a jazz technique. I'm practicing both from now on!
Wow!!!
I need the phone number to a neurologist because this blew my mind.
Wow, the right hand technique is completely different from what is normally used in Drum Corps.
he's like a machine :O
Are you left handed? Great control, wow, how did you get that left thumb moving so damn fast??!!
Decades of practice lol
Triangle solo!
His right earlobe has more drumming skill then mne
What kind of sticks is he using?
Bjorn Filemon vic firth kp2’s
dammit good video! thx
Swear to god I met this guy before without even knowing him
That one hand tho 😳
Jeff Prosperie. Nuff said
4:38 OMG!
but notice the stick was doing little circles? impressive tho.
The infamous Jim Kilpatrick one-handed open rolls.
name of the drum head?
Scottish drummers play a little bit different than American drummers. There inferences is on using their fingers, more so than their wrist
Not true for pipe band drumming. It is always on the fingers.
But can Jojo Mayer play doubles with two fingers?
I like ur accent
Dat control
Thank you for giving me something worth stealing.
he could actually play death metal. he's got blast beats down😂
Beats every rock drummer by a mile.
I didn't want to say " Bob Hoskins is one hell of a drummer!"😆
I wouldn't be so sure. Jojo Mayer is one of the most respected drum set players of recent times, possibly even in the pantheon of the all time greats. His technique and control is just otherworldly. Your right hand pinkie kills me
Your comment is annoying me
Gabriel {BYOS} I didn’t know this was Irish drumming chill bud
@@Elfbarrr maybe watch the vid bud XD
Hahaha! LOLOLOL! Yeah I know it. I don't know why is Mangini considered as the fastest. Jojo would definitely humiliate Mangini with just a single hand! XD

A FLAWLESS Mama - Papa roll. SO hard to execute properly, just try it and see.
Works all pretty well on These Bone- hard ugly sounding High Tech- high tension drums. Ist's musically NONSENSE !!
This guy is mustard.
I bet he can beat Mangini in speed...
This is a common issue with drummers, why does it have to be the most technical, id rather listen to a good pipe band and drum corps than some college band.
Really? Why no "World's Fastest Drummer" title then?
Who cares who is the quickest..it is possible this Jojo Mayer may be quicker (although doubtful), but I would bet my last dollar that Kilpatrick is more polished, accomplished and is ahead in technicality anyday...
Could be but Jim would plain kill him for technicality..
Nope.
this sucks if you're not ambidextrous
Then you cannot be a drummer....
I have 2 early TDR's. 15 in. Models. Truly, the loudest snares ever made. Never was a fan of these popcorn snares. They just don't sound right for this old dude! Cheers!
