Your underwater footage is *extremely* helpful! This has given me a much better understanding of what I feel through the rod during the retrieve. (I have never yet caught a fish with a spinnerbait. I'll keep trying...)
Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
I've been using the 1/16 or 1/8 strike King or mini king for bass because that work great for me. Mini buzz baits and mini X-Men chatter bait. I've made one bag for mini and one for standard baits.
Excellent video on spinnerbaits. One of my go-to lures for sure. I love inline spinners, but when there's more vegetation around this becomes a better choice for me.
In all honesty, I fish more inline spinners than I do spinnerbaits, but some of the hardest bites I've ever had came on a Johnson Beetle Spin and a small spinner bait that I can't remember the brand (Colorado blade, though). Nice video and underwater footage.
I use inline spinners a lot, but switch to a spinnerbait when there is more vegetation that would get hung up on an inline. Check out our similar video on inline spinners: th-cam.com/video/eZNCHrgcM14/w-d-xo.html
Great video on spinner baits! It was a great source of info. I have been using a black and orange spinner without anything on it for some time now with quite a bit of success
I have a Strike King midnight spinnerbait that came with a black Colorado blade and black skirt with red fleck. I've had it for over 15 years, and I just recently replaced the skirt. It has caught the majority of my fish over those years. I'm in PA, and generally prefer darker baits. I've caught bass on bluegill colors, and only once with a white spinnerbait. But that could just be because of my preference for dark baits, as I always start with my go-to. Happy fishing!
The underwater footage and details to education make this channel a wonderful place that doesn't get enough attention. My girl was super confused about why I use certain lures and where... I showed her this channel and now we bet on who can catch more fish. Kudos to you fishing brethren 🍻
The local tackle shop in my small city suggested to give spinnerbait a try. I need to figure out how to cast them. LOL!!! Mine always get tangled. But they also told me about a ned rig and I have had great success with those. Once again, thanks for the video.
@@TGormania That happens to everyone once in a while. Most of your casts should be fine. Are you tying direct to the spinnerbait (not using a snap or snap swivel on it)?
My go-to spinnerbait around here is a white/yellow or bluegill pattern with two blades - one gold, one silver. I have a couple from River2Sea with a gold Indiana blade and a silver Colorado blade, and those are my favorites. I also like smaller spinnerbaits with a single Colorado blade for working slower in cooler water.
It's worth a try but I've never heard of anyone using a spinnerbait for salmon. I have caught them in shallow rivers on crankbaits, small inline spinners, and jigs with fake eggs or spawn sacs.
Im planning on using a 3/8 oz spinnerbait in a lake. Does it need an additional sinker attached to the line, to snsure that it travels nice and horizontally along the bottom of the lake ?
Love your videos. Can I ask why you suggest not to use snaps with the open R shape? Last week I tried using a spinnerbait but I was getting caught in the weeds with almost every cast. They'd latch onto the R shape, the snap, the blade, the hook, literally everything, was driving me insane lol
A snap will tend to slide down the wire on a spinnerbait with an open R shape. You can fix this issue by putting a tiny rubber band around that point of the bait so the snap can't get out. But otherwise, the snap tends to find its way out during a cast. Spinnerbaits are pretty weedless but there is still a limit to where they can be used. If the vegetation is really dense, you may only be able to use things like Texas rigs, bass jigs, or topwater frogs. Or if the vegetation is below the surface, you can use baits that stay up high in the water.
Nat thanks for the video, you helped me a lot on spinner baits. Could you please tell me about the ugly stick. How long is the rod and what size line and then especially the limit on the weight weight the rod will handle . Is the rod fast action tip? What size reel? I will really appreciate the info. Yhanks
With spinnerbaits I'm usually using my MH Ugly Stik Carbon 7' fast. It's a 1/4-3/4oz rod but I've thrown 1 1/4oz lures with it and it handles them fine. It has a Diawa Regal LT 2500 spinning reel with 30lb braid. I also use this rod with Texas rigs and frogs.
Nat, thanks. I have a 7' med/ heavy ugly stick . 8-20 line weight . Doesn't specify wether it' fast action or what weight limits as far as baits to use . It's a shakespear rod . I have a okuma ,stratus [ 55 } 5000 spin reel , Does this make a good , and is fast action or how do you tell ? So also what would the lure weight be . I fish from the river bank., don't have a boat. I keep learning from your videos , but the questions I have here I don't know answers, Thanks, !!
@@bobcragle8124 if it's a medium-heavy rod, the lure weight is probably between 1/4oz and 1oz. Also probably a fast action if it doesn't say otherwise. It looks like your Okuma Stratus 55 reel is rated for 10-15lb line so that's a good combination with that rod. Those ratings are based on the thickness of 10-15lb monofilament so you could put heavier braided line on if you want to. 30lb braid would still be thinner than 15lb mono.
Spinnerbaits work anywhere from the surface to the bottom. Sometimes the big fish will be hanging around the bottom and slow-rolling a spinnerbait just above the bottom is a good way to get them.
Yes, they will work at night. Spinnerbaits make a lot of vibration and they can attract fish with that, even if they can't see the flash. I've caught big walleyes on black spinnerbaits in the dark.

The soft plastic would go on the main hook, and then you would slide the trailer hook on. You can also use spinnerbaits without soft plastic trailers at all.
@@FishingwithNat Thanks. I appreciate it. I saw that you also fish for pike. I've been trying to get into pike fishing. f you don't mind, can you tell me what set up you recommend?
@@doanut300 I mostly use a medium or medium heavy spinning rod with 15-20lb braid for pike. I'll use either a thin steel leader or 30lb monofilament/fluorocarbon leader. I've never used a trailer bait, good to know to just try out. Spinner bait is probably my favorite goto, I've caught probably every species in my local lake on them except a cat fish, and carp. I feel like a cat fish will probably hit it eventually.
Pretty much any type of knot will work fine with a spinnerbait. The type of line you're attaching to it will affect the best knot to use. Check out this quick video on when to use different knots and why: th-cam.com/video/rdx_9P7a3N0/w-d-xo.html
Muskies will hit traditional spinnerbaits like those in this video, but they are more commonly targeted with large inline spinners (bucktails). I like the Mepps Aglia #5 for smaller muskies and the Mepps Musky Killers and larger for bigger muskies.
@@Danieldeesivongsa Use a large one with a trailer for muskies. Try gold blades in murky water, silver blades in clear water. Or you can get a spinnerbait with one of each. Spinnerbaits can work well in muddy water or at night because of the intense flash and vibration they give off. They aren't the best in surf because the blade will tend to break the surface and stop spinning. You'll want to keep it down lower in the water so it doesn't pop out of the surf.
