extremely helpful when you are new to fishing in adulthood and have no family to teach you
Wonderful - I'm glad to hear that it was helpful! Feel free to ask questions on this channel, and check out our Learn How to Fish playlist - lots of good stuff there. th-cam.com/play/PLcXAWxBLRzoLwZtDQEhuaHby0yQM_wHhU.html
I have fished for 52 years. Fish will bite just about anything when feeding. Some fishing spots, the fish one bite at specific times. You can fish for hours and not get a bite or follow. Soon as the fish come on, they bites for awhile than just stop, nothing. That's why it's called fishing, not catching.
True - feeding windows are pretty common. We try to convince ourselves that all kinds of tiny "secrets" are the key to hauling in loads of fish every time we go out, but even professionals have plenty of days where they can't catch a thing.
I’m just now keying in on the perfect time to go out to the private community lake I live on with top waters and what not, however, its literally any time that I can throw in a worm and get a bite, makes little sense to me
You right you gotta know yo water
Getting outside and enjoying nature is the reason I fish.
I've watched a bunch of your videos by this point and i'm pleased each time with your concise delivery and depth of information. Thank you!

Nice video! Appreciate the tips and information on frog fishing. Very helpful! Keep doing what you do buddy! #FishingwithNat rocks!!!
Thanks!
Great vid! In the last couple days filming vids I’ve had three hits on the frog and all three got away lol. First two the bass hit more of the edge of the frog the one today I just didn’t get him. I even asked people to leave a comment on what I can do to increase my hook up ratio. Tonight I see this in my feed and I’m like ohhh I need to watch this! Thanks for putting it together!
Thanks. Yeah frog fishing can be frustrating if they keep short-striking or if you set the hook too quickly. The bigfoot frog I mentioned in the video is my favorite and most successful frog, but I wish the paddletail legs were a bit shorter to increase the hookup ratio.
I used a frog for the first time today and caught the biggest bass I ever caught, I'm a believer lol
Awesome. Frogs are great for big bass.
just got one of these along with my first baitcaster and i'm having trouble casting it far. so i'll stick to the spinning reel cus it's easier for me. great video man 👍🏽❤
Thanks. I actually prefer spinning tackle for frogs.
Awesome informative video.

amazing video, thanks for the efforts
Thanks - I appreciate the comment.
Biggest issue I’ve had is getting so many hits but it’s almost like the fish doesn’t even take the frog and ends up missing it altogether.
Thanks for all your help I’ve caught many bass since I’ve cut down the legs! Thank you!
Yeah sometimes they completely miss the frog or just grab a leg or two. In that case I'll usually downsize my frog.
You can bend the hook outward a little bit with a pair of pliers and that will help with your hook set.
@@gullo8410 Yup, that's mentioned in the video. Bend it a little, but not so much that it catches a lot of vegetation.
And cut the tails to about the length of its body just the overhang of the frog if you hang it upside down
@@Valetic6 Sounds like a good rule
I love those places🥰🐸🎣
Me too!
Used my first frog lure today and had some good hits while riding the top of the lily pads first one scared me a little because I was not expecting it
Yeah sometimes the strikes will give you a scare. That's part of the fun of frog fishing. 😀
@@FishingwithNat it sure was fun even though I didn’t catch anything that day, it was also a learning experience. I didn’t know the popping sound around lily pads is the fish sucking the bottom of the pads trying to get food from them. At least that is what google says.
Caught two bass on a frog yesterday in lily pads. I have the exact same combo you show at 2:26 (Regal LT 2500XH and ugly stik carbon). It works great.
The medium-heavy carbon is my favorite rod. I'll pick that over my medium-heavy St Croix any day, although I usually bring both with different types of frogs so I can switch easily.
I have hit musky on the scum frogs a few time when fishing for bass. So i always rock 45lb braid all the time
Not a bad idea. Sometimes you never know what you'll catch on a frog.
Very informative ❤❤

Hey Nat, I just recently purchased a couple of the Scum Frog Launch frogs to add to my collection, I'm looking forward to getting out on the water to try them out. As soon as the weather breaks that is. I love frog fishing with my 7'4" heavy/fast Victory rod paired with a Tat 200 7.3:1, it makes pulling them out from cover a little easier... Tight Lines!!
Sounds good! The ice is melting early here in Wisconsin, but frog fishing is still several months away. :(
@@FishingwithNat yes it is... we're expecting highs in the mid 50's on Thursday here in the suburbs of Detroit. We have some ice on Lake St Clair in the shallow areas, a lot of open water elsewhere though. Then it's going back to winter... lol I plan to take advantage of the warmer temps and get some things done to the boat on Thursday...

I was fascinated by the number of these words that had a variant usage from other regions or in literature. Others (like blatherskyte) are archaic or out of usage in the language in the main but preserved in Appalachian English. I also got to wondering about the etymology of the words. "Stogging" is a word I encountered somewhere in the past (probably a book). It wasn't until I watched this today that it occurred to me it could easily be a modification of "stalking." Don't know, but world love to learn.
Sounds like something to ask the hosts of the A Way With Words podcast.
just lost 5 fish in the last hour in the dark on my frog…came home and I’m watching this lol
Shoot - you'll get 'em next time!
Amazing👍👍
Thank you
Great job ty 👍👍
Thank you
The green frog above the two white and green frogs is the first frog I ever caught a fish on, also my PB
Awesome
nice to know more, i need to bend my hooks on my frogs, thank you
They should have just a tiny gap between the hook point and the frog body. If they are bent up too much, the hooks could start to catch more junk in the water.
I had luck trolling these on the surface relatively close to shore. Very slow speed, near constant twitching to imitate frog swimming action. Even when the lake was turning, they still came up and took it.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing
I find mono the best frog line, as that little bit of stretch helps me out. Braid no stretch you can set the hook preemptively. Whatcha think?
I like having a mono leader too, or even fluoro. The little bit of stretch is nice, but the bigger reason around here is that I could get a strike from a pike or musky at any time and they will slice right through braid.
Just bought my little big foot today. Even though I don't even have a bass rod set up yet 😂
Cool. It's a sweet little bait.
I have been trying a frog lure. It’s white with the stringy type of legs. I’m not getting any strikes. The lakes I have tried have Lilly pads but are pretty shallow. Maybe there are just no real frogs around? Could the color be wrong? It’s so weedless and easy to cast so I’ll keep trying. Any more tips? I’m in new jersey.
At this time of year, you'll want to slow down a lot with the frog retrieve, or move toward another type of bait. Topwater fishing really slows down in November unless you're in the south.
I watched my buddy BURN, I'm talking BURN BURN like as fast as he could reel, and I've to this day, NEVER seen as many boils as I have that day. Thanks jay!Jay!
Edit: IMO, this bait cannot be fished wrong.
Yeah sometimes a super-fast retrieve with a frog bait (or any bait, really) can cause an aggressive reaction bite from a fish that grabs it without even thinking first. Thanks for the comment.
I dont know if you still read comments here, but what if the frog has a hole where the hook and (in my case) the spinner/small spoon is portruding out of? I tested in in my aquarium, dragging it back and forth, and it gets fill up with water and eventually no longer buoyant.
All frogs have a small hole where the hooks come out, but the hole is small enough that the air inside the frog is trapped and water doesn't get in. But if the hole gets stretched during twitches or if another hole develops, the frog can lose its buoyancy and you'll have to squeeze the water out every couple of casts.
I have a genuine question:
I always hear that you need a heavy powered rod for frogging. Is this solely due to vegetation, or does it have to do with the double hook (meaning more power needed for hookset)?
I fish with hollow-body frogs in places with no vegetation with a Medium Heavy rod. Will setting the hooks with a frog lure harm my rod at this power?
It won't harm your rod. I've caught bass on a medium-light with frogs before. But a medium-heavy or heavy rod gives you more leverage and power to get that fish up on top of the vegetation. The large hooks do require some good power to get a good hookset, but the biggest reason for the heavy powered rod is to drag the fish out before they wrap you up in a ton of plants.
@@FishingwithNat Thank you! This is exactly the answer I needed! I can now rest peacefully.
@@r3ynolds_ow581 Glad I could help
Spinning reels have lower gear ratio ? While this may be true most spinning reels bring in just as much line if not more per spin of the handle and since their drag is not dependent on the gearing ratio (a baitcaster with high gear ratio can make less drag than one with low gear ratio) you can have both high gear ratio and lots of drag, making it idea for frog fishing
Thanks for the discussion. You bring up a good point, and even the diameter of the spool can also impact the recovery rate of the line. I agree that spinning reels can be well-suited to frog fishing, and I use both spinning and baitcasters for frog fishing with equal results.
80lbs of vegatation 😂 its kinda true! lol, Great vid.
Thanks. Oh yeah, 80lbs of vegetation is not an exaggeration! 😄
@@FishingwithNat very true!
Could I use mono line because I dont have any stores near to me that have braided usually in stock
You can but you will miss a lot more strikes, and the fish will be more likely get you caught up in the vegetation because of the huge amount of stretch with monofilament. I have caught fish on frogs with monofilament though if it's all I have with me at the time.
Hello i dont have a frog yet and im a newbie but which frogs is it that make a flopping Sound when dragged? And are they Any Good?
There are various frogs with kicking legs that make popping sounds, or there are popping frogs that have a small scoop on the front and they spit water when twitched. I show both of those frogs in action during the video. You could search for "popper frog" or "kicking frog" online and I'm sure you'll find some options.
i have a problem, my frog hooks are sticking out under the thing and exposed how do i fix the hooks into the right place
That happens all the time after catching a fish. You just need to rotate the hooks back up to the top. You may have to squeeze the body a bit or pull the legs up and over the hooks again. It's hard to describe but if you give it a try, you'll figure it out.
What fish finder do you have on your kayak?
I have a Humminbird Helix 7 on my Sportsman PDL 120 and a Garmin Striker 4 that I move between my two smaller fishing kayaks.
Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.
Thanks for watching
Hey have you heard of the double pitzen knot? I think you should check it out.
Yes, it's not one I tie often though. I mostly use the Trilene knot and modified Uni knot.
@@FishingwithNat wow im so happy you replied. I have been tying the modified uni as well. The trilene, uni, and now double pitzen are my first knots i have learned. Love the vids!

I am fishing Eagle River in a few days, any tips?
Fish on a weekday! 😆
Seriously though, look for quieter bays where the motorboat traffic doesn't stir things up and pile up chopped vegetation. And use a thick leader so the pike and muskies don't take your frog.
@@FishingwithNat you think frog on leader is good move? I will surely try. Any other lure suggestions for when I mix it up?
@ryancastner1407 I always use leaders with frogs because there are so many pike and muskies around. In the south where those species aren't very common, braided line tied directly to a frog isn't a problem. That said, a stiff leader of fluoro or mono will affect a frog's action a bit, especially if you're trying to do a walk-the-dog action. I still stick with using a leader though.
Can frogs still be used hood with 6 pound mono line? I’m too lazy to change line
They can, but you will have a harder time setting the hook with the high stretch of mono, and it will be hard to drive the large hooks in with a light setup like that. Also, if the fish gets into the plants, you'll be stuck and not able to get it out.
@@FishingwithNat I go trout fishing and bass fishing and only have one rod so I want thin line so what would be a good middle ground for bass and trout fishing?
@@BooneTheKing Light line is definitely best for trout fishing. Frog fishing requires pretty heavy line though. If you really want to target bass and trout with a single rod, I'd suggest 15lb or 20lb braid and you could add a light leader when fishing for trout (4lb or 6lb mono or fluoro). You still might get into trouble if you are casting into heavy lily pads, but you should be fine fishing on the edge of pads/vegetation or over the top of submergent vegetation. How heavy is the rod you're using?
This is the exact situation I’m in, I also trout and bass fish and I have 6lb mono and I just got a frog so I’ll write back and let you know how it goes…
@@rbsmokez4682 I’ve used a frog with my 6lb line and got 3 bites but the hooks didn’t get set however that might’ve been my fault not the lines fault but if you can confirm if it works good enough that would be great
Do you have them weighted some how?
No, hollow-body frogs are usually made of rubber, plus the weight of the thick double hook and wire, so they are pretty heavy on their own.
@@FishingwithNat thanks Nat .
@@bobcragle8124 Glad I could help.
Daiwa Tatula 300 HS baitcaster has 8.1 ratio.
Thanks for the tip
How come I’m the only one that can’t cast a frog far? Whats the technique
I think it's probably more due to your reel settings or weight of your line. What kind of reel and line are you using the frog with?
I had like a 4 foot pike yesterday smash my frog and I was so excited I set the hook to early then lost the pike 😢
It's a mistake everyone makes. You'll get better at holding back for a second or two.
A word off caution. I have an older log cabin on a small lake. After an idiot working the lawn shorelines by tossing his frog on shore and hopping it into the water my Labrador caught it as the moron tried to jerk it away. It was a nightmare resulting in a trip to the veterinarian and anesthesia.
Thanks for the comment. That sounds terrible. Even casting near the shore (still in the water) when a dog is nearby isn't a good idea. Sorry you had to deal with that.
@FishingwithNat Thanks for the acknowledgment.I use frogs in the pads all of the time. I used to do the same thing with Uncle Josh pork frogs, which I guess dates me.
i have a 8 gear one
An 8:1 gear ratio? On a spinning or baitcasting reel?
I have a love hate relationship with frogs. Lots of fun and you can fish them deep in the trash, but they have a bad hookup ratio.
If you're hooking 50% of the strikes, you're doing pretty well. It's part of the reality of fishing frogs.
I’m starting to understand why anglers have dozens of poles lol. I want to fish a frog, but do I want to bad enough to restring with braid? I dunno lol
Yeah I hear you. I had one fishing rod for a long time. Now I have a few dozen!
You can fish nearly anything with anything imo. I believe that specifying gear to a given lure just improves the action, presentation, or ease of use. This is overall, but of course there are times where it's severely needed (e.g, don't use an ultralight rod with a hollow frog)
Wouldn't the leader defeat the purpose of 65 pound braid. Yes let's use 65 pound braid but where it's need to be strongest we'll make it half as strong if that..
Yes, a weaker leader would absolutely defeat the purpose of a stronger main line when fishing in heavy cover. If you bump to 50 or 65lb braid, you'll want to bump up the leader strength too.
I use a trailer hook on all my frogs
Do you catch a lot of plants and junk on the trailer hook?
@@FishingwithNat no. The hook is facing up. It might if the frog flips upside down
@@FishingwithNat they also make trailer hooks for frogs
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️
Thanks
Doesn't work in Florida for some reason 🤔
What doesn't work? Frogs?
@FishingwithNat Yea, I tried all day.
@@cdbz20 Don't give up on frogs. Bass go nuts over them but sometimes the fish just don't want to eat, or maybe the spot you were fishing wasn't holding any bass right now.
Step 1: Fish for Bass
Step 2: Cast literally anything with a hook
Sometimes that applies to pike and bluegills too!
I never catch bass with the frog lure
The first few times I used one, I didn't catch anything either. It took practice learning where to cast and how to work the frog. Now it's one of my best confidence baits.
@@FishingwithNat do you know how I can catch bass with frog lure? Or does it really depend on the lake/pond? Because I went to a lake where it has bass and I casted the topwater frog lure and didn’t had a single bite
@@IIkIllswxtch Are there large bass in there? Maybe try downsizing to a tiny frog like a Lunkerhunt pocket frog. Or try working it slower. It could also be that the fish just weren't cooperating that day! Keep at it and you'll catch them. Make sure to watch the video all the way through for lots of tips.
@@FishingwithNat there is bass but I never caught a huge one so it could be cuz the frog was a bit too big
@@IIkIllswxtch Sometimes they are looking for a smaller frog or a slower frog. Keep at it!
Why does no one eat bass ?
I have eaten them but only when the water is cold. They are good at that time. I've heard that the meat is more mushy when they're caught in warm water, but I haven't tried it myself.
50 lb braid is way overkill but if you want to guarantee the line wont snap and want to never use drag then its fine lol
I typically throw frogs around here on 20-30lb braid but if you're fishing in really dense vegetation or around heavy wood cover for BIG bass (8lb+), sometimes that 50lb is good to have.
Yawn. I bought 15 frogs for $20 on Amazon. I take the double hooks out and put a single wire weedless hook down. It's still totally weedless. Hookups X 3!.
Neat idea. Do you mean the single hook faces down? You certainly don't need to spend 10 bucks on a single frog. The cheap ones work just fine!
@@FishingwithNat Yes. 5 of the frogs were half the size of the regular ones. They are deadly.
@@JamesJones-cx5pk Awesome. I like the small frogs for those times when the fish don't seem to want a big one.
