Chatterbait Fishing Lure Tips and How They Work Underwater (Underwater Bass Fishing Lures)

  • Chatterbaits are excellent bass fishing baits. They are also called bladed jigs or vibrating jigs, and are used frequently by bass anglers. Z-man chatterbaits are the most common and the original chatterbaits, but other bladed jigs are available too, like the Strike King Thunder Cricket. Here we use underwater slow-motion video to demonstrate how chatterbaits work, and tips and techniques to catch more bass with chatterbaits.

    Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit th-cam.com/users/postUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

My reel is a Quantum KVD Smoke S3 PT reel 6 to1. 30pd Suffix braiding moss green. The rod is a Berkley Cherrywood HD MH 7' baitcaster. Got around to the north side and it's 75 degrees. I am using a 1/2 oz White and CHARTREUSE skirted with a White StrikeKing swimbait trailer. Garlic CHARTREUSE Spike it on the legs. I caught 17 Largemouth in 17 casts. It lasted about 20 minutes. The info I've learned from you and a few others has helped me with colors and presentation now I just need to wait for the river to come down a bit. I don't have much luck when the water is high. Do you have any hints for bank fishing with high water?

    I wonder what is the best skirt length? In other words: What skirt-to-trailer-ratio to choose for any given type of trailer?

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I tend to like natural-looking baits, so I picture what I'm trying to imitate and try to match the overall shape to that. A crayfish/crawfish has its claws hanging freely back as it swims, so I like to have a craw trailer sticking way back. If I'm imitating a bluegill, their body tends to be very wide/tall and quickly narrows down to the tail, so I like the trailer to end closer to the skirt.

    • @metallicblood
      @metallicblood 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FishingwithNat Thank you so much. That's very helpful for me. What do you do with a curlytail as trailer? Let's say the uncurled part of the body makes about half the size of it. Is that half also your skirt length or do you make the skirt longer then?

    Do you think 🤔 a chatter bait can be fished vertically? I jig for Lake Trout in 100 feet of water. Lakers chase lures retrieved straight up and I'd like to add a chatter blade to my 2 ounce marabou jigs and crank them straight up. Will 2 oz be too heavy for the blade to impart action?

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the blade would have the same action when jigged vertically and I don't think the weight of the jig would change anything either. I've never heard of a chatterbait being fished vertically, but that doesn't mean it won't work!

    Bouncing chatters off debris is dangerous , you can easily snag that hook because it’s bare and sticking so far up , I don’t recommend bottom fishing with them either , other than that I’d say this video is great , just don’t forget that the bare hook like that is always waiting to get snagged

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. There are better baits to toss into heavy laydowns or other complex snags. Chatterbaits can handle some of that and weedless chatterbaits can offer a little more protection for the hook. You're right though - the exposed hook point means you still have to be careful around snags.

    • @hanburgundy4317
      @hanburgundy4317 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, in my lake I can't throw em slow without pulling a bunch veg back with em - I have to "hit the ground running" with the baits and retrieve em faster so I don't snag clumps; nothing spooks fish more than a handful of salad going by lol

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hanburgundy4317 In those areas, it's probably best to move to a spinnerbait or even a weedless bait to give you more time fishing and less time picking salad.

    Do you use weights when fishing chatterbaits?

    • @FishingwithNat
      @FishingwithNat  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do not. I like to work them pretty slowly so extra weight would prevent that. If you want to work them fast or deep, you can buy chatterbaits that are a full ounce or more. You could add weight to a lighter one but I think you would get hung up more in brush or vegetation.
