Great questions and I don't remember.
Friend will recognize a mazda 323, or mazda allegro, they use protocol 9142-2 and j1850, that's obd1, will it work for those vehicles?
Nope this for obd2 only l, it will work if it’s a 1996 and newer.

Just go by the year, I have seen a 1995 ford thunder that had an obd2 connection. What year is the Mazda. And yes we are 16 pin for obd2 in North America
