I think the case of the 2+ is exactly the same as the 2. They also sell motherboard upgrade so that you can upgrade your old 2 to a 2+. That must be why the case still has the old printing. I think we should applaud and encourage re-usability and upgradability of parts! Even when that may come at a cost of some "wrong" printing on the case. Rub off the old printing with some alcohol, whatever. Hat off to reusable parts!
Yes we should because it's way better for the consumer & environment but way worse for the seller. Companies usually release new versions of their products more often than necessary is usually so that they can help get a foot ahead of their biggest competition; themselves. Even the coolest & best product ever within a given market, made by the greatest company will eventually still see sales begin to fall off, not because their competing with another product but because at a point there are so many used copies of their product for sale that it drives prices/ demand down, & its very tempting to just release a "newer/better/updated" version of that product.
After knowing this company and seeing that they sell the upgrade option to previous versions amazed me, I'm also really considering buy the 2+ this year
I don’t know if this company is Chinese, works with oem’s or is an oem itself, but in any case l when I went to the website and saw parts listed under “diy” (probably chosen as a glamorous name since Parts may impart a less reliable association) I was amazed. Well done, for the environment and the customer. PS the site clearly states now some models have similar cases, but list differences very transparently (unlike the marketing of big brands that want you to think of technology as magic and pixie dust) such as better buttons.
What's nicest about this, in my opinion, is how easy it seems to get emulated games running. For me, I just want to have access to my old titles quickly and easily from anywhere.
I got one and I haven't even touched it yet. I don't know how to emulate and I honestly would rather pay someone to do it for me. But I haven't found anyone yet lol. I am not gonna just send it off to someone random.

I just love that shell so much - getting any additional performance out of that unit is a dream but this is such a big leap from the og that I can't help but be impressed. Great vid!
Everything about the Retroid Pocket 2+ seems amazing. From the price to the battery life, I'm definitely going to have it on my radar as a possible new portable game system. I can't wait to see the kind of competition this creates for the low-price handheld market. Thanks again for a great review, Taki.
dont believe the lies of this video. owned it since it launched, and its a steaming pile of shit. battery life when actually in use is 1-2 hours, and it can barely run most GBA games, and cannot run a lot of them period, at a playable frame rate. it absolutely cannot handle anything higher than the SNES.
there we go. thats the REAL review. far more inline with anyone who knows about emulation's expectations. its a piece of crap being pushed by a scumbag youtuber
@@FingerinUrDaughter I have a couple of these units, and I get good battery life numbers on mine. Build quality could certainly be improved, and the plastic shows fingerprints easily, making the device look even cheaper. Your sample size of 1 (one) seems to have a defective battery. Perhaps contact Retroid about it?
@@truectl riiight except any time spent on the retroid reddit when this POS launched would have shown you that its not a "defective" battery. its just a shit battery.
@@FingerinUrDaughter definitely found it shady when the frame rate counter was hidden all of a sudden when it became time to test psp games and the rest
The fact that a handheld at this price range can admirably handle up to PS2 and gamecube emulation is wild! Along with the improvements and support, I think other competitors in the market are gonna be hard pressed to beat what the retroid has to offer.
It's barely runs ps2 and GameCube. It struggles with psp. You might have a few games with each of these systems that will run with some tinkering but this is up to n64 at best . Don't get me wrong I love mine but if you want ps2 or GameCube use a laptop
Pre-ordered mine back in Nov and this will be my first ROM handheld. Shipped on Christmas Eve now just have to wait a little longer! Thank you for all the updates and benchmarks.
I remember just this time last year Chains of Olympus on PSP was kind of a dream to run at playable framerates and barely a year later it's not even a big deal anymore lol. I feel like the pandemic sparked a nostalgia revolution and everyone involved in the emulation scene has been chugging away, making leaps and strives every day it seems! I'd be willing to bet that solid GameCube emulation will be playable on affordable devices like this by this time next year!
I’m so impressed with how well this is done, and how thorough your review was. Truly appreciate it, and I think it’s a pretty good deal for what you get.
I bought the upgrade kit for my RP2. Seems to be an easy process so hoping it will go smoothly. Love when a company lets you upgrade and save money by letting you just purchase the parts you need to change.

Super impressive. I wasn't expecting this level of emulation performance for at least another 3 generations. The work done on both the hardware and software side of things deserves much respect.
Not gonna lie, I am *NOT* proficient when it comes to running emulators (particularly when I have to figure out how to download and apply BIOS myself). Just having a dedicated device that can install emulators for me without me having to do anything beyond simply checking a box sounds incredible.
Two progs. The emulator and the ROMs and sometimes the bios for later consoles. But older ones, google for ROMs, use emulator to search for ROMs. Open rom. Enjoy.
Very impressed by the improvements. The dpad and clicky buttons put me off the original but now fixed and it emulates way in excess of the standard up to ps.
I really think the retroid pocket 2 + is gonna push the retro handheld market to become better and more competitive. Too many retro handhelds offer to little and come with a high/premium price tag for the technology they have inside.
@@Kryynism I have a PSP Go, you think that will work? Last I heard PS2 games don't run well on PSPs or Vitas... Most PS1 games usually are smooth but I can't imagine it handling much more than that
Since when did these exist? I remember trying to download emulators all the time years and years ago. This is amazing. Haven’t touched a consul in forever but I would def play this. Nostalgia to the max
haha I was just saying that and I saw this comment I know right when did the world become to GAMIFIED to the point of bootleg-handheld-multiconsole-emulators being available to buy in store and even ONLINE lmao In 1999 If you told me online shopping would be a thing in the future I'd be like whaaaa
I have wanted the Retroid pocket 2 for the longest time now, but the only thing holding me back from buying one was that my phone could run more consoles than the Retroid pocket 2. I am blown away by what has changed in the past year for retro handhelds performance-wise, and a think the Retroid pocket 2 + is a perfect example and I am super excited to see what comes next.
Think of it this way if you used your phone for playing games you would wear it out faster than if you had a dedicated device for that at least this is the excuse I am going to use when I get one of these lol.
I've pre-ordered an indigo one last month after seeing your first look coverage. They've finally shipped it yesterday so I'm pretty stoked. I rarely preorder but this really caught my eye and it's reassuring to see that your review is still positive.
It's not that Silk Road. I imagine it's a pretty popular name for Chinese export companies for historical reasons. Just protect yourself the same way as with every other online store. Package is already with DHL, will update here about shipping quality next week when it should arrive.
It has finally arrived. The DHL bag contained a basic small cardboard shipping box with the retail box inside, no complaints about that. Inside is the RP2+, some white USB 3.1 cable (purple port), a screen protector and a useless mini manual. Mine had RP2 branding on the chassis too, like Taki said, but the box and the boot screen correctly says RP2+. The initial setup was quick and painless. I didn't turn on Google Play Services to save on resources, installed F-Droid as my store instead. I've tried out Retroarch with some snes roms and after configuring the controls it works well. The screen looks great and the speakers sound great. The device is a bit taller than the RG-350 I previously used and it's more comfortable to hold, but the controls feel stiffer. Maybe they just need to be worn in. Speaking of which, the edges of the LZ and RZ are very sharp on mine, but that can be rubbed away so no big deal. Overall I had a very positive first impression. I will update this comment if I find any pain points.
This really, relaly looks amazing. Perhaps the biggest seller for me is being able to play Rogue Squadron on the go, but several Gamecube and even some PS2 games as well? Definitely worth it!
The price is really insane to me. I feel like Anbernic has lost the plot a bit, seeing as their prices keep rising due to their success. The RP2+ seems to be exactly what I'm looking for as a companion device to my Moqi i7S. Will order one sometime in January and I'm really looking forward to it! Thanks for the great overview, looking forward to your Dolphin videos on the RP2+!
I'm impressed how much that does that it doesn't claim to do. Gamecube is just surprising, sure at times some hit 15-20fps, but largely they didn't feel like a slideshow watching it either, felt more like a 20 year old era where peoples computers if they weren't always made fresh each year would just run a little slower, and you're used to it. I think the most expensive thing in the end won't be the device, but the big storage chip to hold the games because when you get into the optical and post 2000 card based games, they're huge. I like the touch setup, anyone try out Dragalia Lost, Animal Crossing Pocket Camp, Super Mario Run, etc?
most likely these are made illegally, without any form of licensing from Nintendo, Sony, etc. This is not that different than illegally downloading music, movies, software without paying for it. Except they just charge for the actual hardware. Imagine you create something to sell, and thieves take it from you to sell for their own gain.
@@kenjipattiinugai1310 No.. Making the console that can run software is not stealing.. Making these things so cheap is not illegal and it doesn't require Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc licensing. You know what would require Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc licensing? Making something and calling it a Gameboy, GBA, gamegear, vita, etc.. but Nintendo, Sony Sega, etc doesn't own the rights to the shape, software or even programming tools used here, so again. .. no There's nothing illegal about this.
@@josephl3602 incorrect. You're not even understanding what I'm saying. Something that is cheap of course is not illegal, that's not the point at all. You're talking about making/selling an exact clone of a Sony, Nintendo, etc game system. Yes, of course that's illegal. As would be using their copy-righted names/branding. But that's not what we're talking about here either. For perspective, downloading music from unauthorized sites is illegal. Only the record label, the artist, or a licensed distributor can legally sell/offer music online. Games are the same way. Only the publisher (Sony, Nintendo, etc), or the game developers, or distributors (stores like GameStop, Best Buy, etc.) can legally sell/offer games. (Or buying/selling 2nd hand games.) However, if you are downloading ripped games (ROMs) from the internet, you're basically pirating, which is illegal. In addition, every game made originally to run on a Playstation is licensed to only run on Playstation hardware, every game made for the Wii is licensed to only run on a Wii, and so on and so forth. If you're running a Playstation game on a PC that means you're using an emulator to run the ROM, that means it's no longer a licensed product. It's a stolen product. (Just like downloading a music album from some share site instead of paying Google or iTunes for the album.) These 3rd party consoles are basically tiny PCs running emulators repackaged into consoles to run ROMs. Unlicensed and illegal.
Minor shortcomings aside, you really gotta appreciate how dedicated the RP team is to designing a quality product. I had an OG RP2, and while I loved it for handheld emulation, there were still some MAJOR problems with it that would sour the experience at times. Fast forward to the RP2+, and I'm happy to say that it looks like they've solved most of these problems in spades. My RP2 just broke (100% my fault...water damage), so I'll definitely be picking up this one. I also appreciate Taki's effort to remain unbiased despite having some minor involvement with the product (IIRC he gave Retroid some constructive feedback on the RP2 if I'm not mistaken?). If anything, the fact that Retroid actually reaches out to people like Taki who earnestly care about the whole handheld emulation scene, and then actually takes their constructive criticism into account when developing the next iteration, really puts them in my good graces. All of this aside, one of my main issues with the OG RP2 was the ergonomics. I really do think the raised conductive rubber buttons instead of the clicky bois should help out with that immensely (queue war flashbacks to playing Rocket Knight on my RP2 and destroying my thumbs on the buttons), but I am still a little worried about hand crampage...Can anybody with the RP2+ confirm whether the new buttons help very much with that?
i'm glad i got into this retro handheld at this time where company like retroid are shaking the market. really tempted to get the RP2+ as an upgrade to my odroid go advance black edition
I don’t think 99 is a bad price point. I can’t believe how far handheld gaming has come. I remember my old tiger handhelds then Gameboy came out and turned the world upside down. Not been much a fan of emulation devices before but this looks like a nice all rounder and given the cost of entry to retro handhelds now (or gaming in general) it looks amazing for the price

@@PatternLand I prefer an authentic experience but now those are a bit too expensive thisnis the next best thing. They haven't really been the beat devices historically but lately they do look like they're getting a lot better
This device addresses a lot of my issues with the last retroid pocket. I actually hated the ui quite a bit. But this fixes quite a bit. The biggest things for me is the cleaner ui, better battery life, and the saturn emulation. I hope they fix that screen bleed though. The good news is if I wanted to fix that I could just order a screen from them and install it myself.
I hope there'll be further revisions on this sometime soon. If the RP3 is this but with a high res 16:9 display and a better second analogue stick i'd buy it in a heartbeat.
It seems that Retroid is consistently outdoing themselves in terms of value and performance. To get a sub-100$ handheld that seems to perform better than the new RG552, priced at around 250, and maybe even the Moqi I7, shows the dedication that Retroid has to their customer base. The RP2+ corrects most of the issues seen in the RP2 and it's exciting to see what's in store for the RP3.
Going with a single powerful Cortex-A75 core was smart since most of these emulators rely on a single main thread. Beats the 2x Cortex-A72 cores on the RG552
I agree. I was excited for the RG552, but this system has me quite a bit more interested now. It certainly looks like they put quite a bit of work into it.
@@BushMucker Hundred dollars for a quality system that can emulate tons of games that would surely add up well above $100 if you were to pay for everything separately, such as controllers and cords.
I received my RP 2+ today and I can confirm the great user experience mentioned in the video. I had my device beside the old RP 2 and the difference is incredibly huge, in term of how easy to navigate and how response the the software. In term of the hardware, the button response is much much much better and way less noisy than the previous rendition. RP 2, unusable piece of crap and made feel that I was robbed. RP 2+, an incredible hardware and software experience and a steal at it price, a must have for sure.
Glad to hear dude. I had the RP2 and it was absolute shite. Used it for a few hours and hated it. I think I'll have to get one of these once the demand slows.
@@PJBonoVox I highly doubt the demand for will slow down, at least for coming couple of months, as they really naild it here so they will have a much higher recommendation from all those media outlets for this segment. My favorite generation is the 6th gen. That's Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and GameCube and they're my favorite consoles ever. So even if we get PS3 to PS4 emulation, I still prefer the older games from 1985-2005.
Same. Mostly because these devices are marketed as retro gaming handhelds. I don't really want anything higher than Dreamcast on one of these devices. Even consoles like Steam Deck I am sure will be great for emulation but at the end of the day if I want to play Gamecube or above then I am always going to play those on a computer on a TV rather than on a tiny handheld screen.
I've been watching this handheld ever since its release, I'm excited to see other TH-camrs reviews on this, and I'm hoping that this device can revolutionize the retro handheld market, to make companies like ambernic and retroid to put out better handhelds.
I've always focused my wishes into a device that could run dreamcast well. It has always been very difficult but this time it's bundled with sega saturn and n64 emulation. I didn't like the gamecube emulation tbh but being capable to do so is sooo good. I wish you had run daytona usa / sega rally / virtua fighter and others.
honestly it would be better if u buy the dreamcast, i can find decent prices in ebay and with games and pretty good conditions, the only worring part is the tv you gonna play, but nothing adptors cant handle
This video just randomly brought back forgotten memories. I remember begging my parents for an original xbox or gba, and now this lil thing can play all these consoles, so crazy.
Thank you for an outrageous showcase! That was lovingly dissected and highlighted many points that I'd otherwise glaze over. What a fantastic display of your passion & astute observational skills, thank you kindly!
Wow! All our retro nostalgic memories of great games put into this cool modern looking device for our convince. I hope they make a lot more versions cause I like it!
This is absolutely incredible. For the price, this is unbeatable. Performance-wise, none of the currently available devices offer much more unless you go super high-end (AYA, AYN, Steam Deck).
@@Guitario666 For me the controlls of the X18s are much better. The controlls of the Retroid pocket have bad positions, especially the DPad is unplayable. And the right stick is very bad. The X18s has better sticks.
Although this is a staggeringly impressive piece of hardware, I think I might be nostalgia-ed out. There aren't any old games I can think of that I haven't already revisited dozens of times, and the ones that I have missed are either too recent or on the PS2 (which almost nobody seems capable of good emulation). I'm sure this device will make a lot of people happy, but I'm ready to move on to other things. C'est la vie.
I remember thinking this way about older systems in the early 00s. There's always a game, there's always a translation, there's always something, but never enough time in the day.
What hurts more than anything is not being able to enjoy an rpg anymore. Between work and 2 kids and a girlfriend I'd get lost in any rpg and potentially forget where I am in the game. Makes me second guess starting anything ...
This is the first video that got me excited about the Retroid Pocket 2 plus. Seeing the android gameplay was my favorite part, but all the other emulators were really smooth too 👌

I'm genuinely impressed with this. I wonder how long it will be, before these devices will emulate PSP, PS2, and Gamecube perfectly and the entire game libraries...It feels like only yesterday these devices would slow way down on Dreamcast. Why buy a ds if there's a device that can run ds games, gamecube, and more.

This is pretty much everything I'd hoped for. I've always like the look of the Retroid Pocket 2 but it just had too many issues - looks like the 2+ has resolved just about every one of those issues. Definitely has my money. Makes the RG552 look terribly overpriced - always good to have competition.
I love Anbernic devices, and the latest looks like high quality, but for $250, and it's struggling on some PSP and N64 games, even though their pre-release videos showed it performing perfectly? Purchasing the RP2+ over the RG552 is a no-brainer in this situation, especially when you get great Gamecube and PS2 performance for just $99!

Amazing The only thing that lets it down, is the screen size. Hopefully its a sign that newer ones are coming, with a bigger screen. Moving to android especially makes it easier for alot too, as there is so much development on that os for emulation now. Nice product, but like i said for me, the screen is too small. Its amazing that finally we are getting such things with n64 and dreamcast compatibility. The others are a big bonus, like psp, and gamecube.
Agreed if it were 5" + on screen size I would order it instantly. Sadly the new Ambernic console is waaay over priced. So I suppose I'll hold out till the next gen
My biggest concern is the tiny screen - I know a major issue with phones is that 6" doesn't translate well to games because of the lack of height, but this still looks like a pretty small screen for N64/PS1/GC/PS2 I...feel old. The last time I had time to seriously console game was around when Twilight Princess released, and now it's a retro game on an emulator. It was for the Wii, and the WiiU was heading out, but it still feels like way too long ago.

Open rom. Enjoy.
You can use the emulator to open the bios after that, nothing to do but run ROMs from emulator

I've pre-ordered an indigo one last month after seeing your first look coverage. They've finally shipped it yesterday so I'm pretty stoked. I rarely preorder but this really caught my eye and it's reassuring to see that your review is still positive.
It says they are sold by Silk Road. Do I need to download anything to protect my data before I order?
It's not that Silk Road. I imagine it's a pretty popular name for Chinese export companies for historical reasons. Just protect yourself the same way as with every other online store. Package is already with DHL, will update here about shipping quality next week when it should arrive.
@@rustkitty do inform us, I love word of mouth, is normally good way to decide.
How's it coming along?

Uighur slave labor.
most likely these are made illegally, without any form of licensing from Nintendo, Sony, etc.
Making something and calling it a Gameboy, GBA, gamegear, vita, etc.. but Nintendo, Sony Sega, etc doesn't own the rights to the shape, software or even programming tools used here, so again. .. no
There's nothing illegal about this.
(Just like downloading a music album from some share site instead of paying Google or iTunes for the album.)
These 3rd party consoles are basically tiny PCs running emulators repackaged into consoles to run ROMs.

Eh, your argument is that it has more uses is flawed since it won’t give you the same experience as playing it on original DS or 3DS since you have to constantly switch the screen and for a lot of games that just won’t be ideal. But hey, you do you.
@@thaiboypsp3000 not looking for the same experience. Looking to play some DS RPG's like pokemon etc on the same handheld as I have all my other retro games on. If you're looking for the "same experience" you wouldn't be playing anything on a retro handheld in the first place
@@thaiboypsp3000 not flawed since it is convenient. there's no argument there. that's the point of these devices. if you are up for the authentic experience then why even bother to get an emulator? but yeah it really depends on the user. personally i don't like clamshell portables which is why i passed on ds. and just to be able to try some of the titles, an emu portable is more than enough.
New dad here, this device would really help me handle this stage of life haha! Awesome video man!
I've been craving getting back into the retro gaming lately, but using my phone. I want something with sticks I think this offers a lot for the price. However, I'm surprised by the decently large bezels.
I wonder when the Retroid Pocket 3 video will be possible?
Outstanding video and information on this handheld. Thanks for your content!!!!😊
This looks like such a slick device, if I were younger I’d be itching to get one, but I’m not sure what the benefits are for me to own this if I already preordered the Steam Deck
well to be fair steam deck is nased on linux and will be harder to install emulators and roms for most ppl...gota go into the hassle of installing windows etc.
while these windows devices and Android things are a bit easier to start with.
also price.is another big factor
Dang I was thinking about just getting a controller attachment and emulating with my phone, but this looks rather cool. Would be nice for a separate gaming device and has pretty solid battery life.
If you want a cheap one easy to get if you are near a wallmart go to it most of the wallmarts have those in the electronics area good luck getting one.
This is pretty much everything I'd hoped for. I've always like the look of the Retroid Pocket 2 but it just had too many issues - looks like the 2+ has resolved just about every one of those issues. Definitely has my money. Makes the RG552 look terribly overpriced - always good to have competition.
Only thing I don't like is lack of R3 and L3, and the slider instead of an actual analog stick. But other than that this thing is perfect.
This do seems like a great device -- especially compared to the latest Anbernic device.
@@Cyko.. too bad gamecube and ps2 games suck. not sure why people are obsessed with playing them.
@@cryengine_x thank god you're here to remind everyone how wrong they are. Dunno what we'd have done without you.
@@dickyholmes8376 I just find it endlessly annoying how all retro reviews only talk about the same stupid thing, how it plays these awful, crappy early 3d games. Like the same ground has been covered 1 billion times. Talk about something else.
@@cryengine_x go away.
Honestly this device has well exceeded my expectations for what it was. I'm amazed
Amazing
The only thing that lets it down, is the screen size.
"They should be pulled off the line and talked to"
Yeah dude, let's editorialize on how they should reprimand their sweat shop labor
Thank you for the comprehensive hands-on look. Just pre-ordered mine!
This seems like a cool device. And a lot easier to set up than most.
I am looking forward to getting thia device for my son. Trying to get him to appreciate retro gaming. Thank you for your review. Love this channel 😁
thanks for reviewing this! i own the rp2 and have been debating the rp2+
Thank you so much for showing alot of gameplay footage. That's mainly what I always look forward to. Great video!
Dude, thanks so much for the review. I almost got the 3 but after your review of that, and this, I know it's best to get the 2+. You're awesome
My biggest concern is the tiny screen - I know a major issue with phones is that 6" doesn't translate well to games because of the lack of height, but this still looks like a pretty small screen for N64/PS1/GC/PS2
I...feel old. The last time I had time to seriously console game was around when Twilight Princess released, and now it's a retro game on an emulator. It was for the Wii, and the WiiU was heading out, but it still feels like way too long ago.
Glad I found this video and review. I had no idea how far emulation devices have come and would love to pick one of these up!
