      When buying Anbernic Handhelds it's best to think of them less like a finished product and more like an SBC. That's why I never recommend buying these Handhelds as soon as they come out.

    It's impressive because it's using relatively new hardware. I'm so sick of most 'emulation devices' literally just being recycled smartphone flagships from like 4 years ago with a new screen and built-in controller only to be sold off for 150-300% of its value and marketed as a retro device. Any time there's a device that is actually designed for its purpose, it automatically gets respect.

      @cloudshad0ws 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@iamjimb depends on what kinds of games you play on it I guess... I prefer the widescreen format (what, 16:9 or 16:10? One of those) because you can still play consoles/games that only came in 4:3. If you set it up so it centers the window rather than stretching it, it'll look the same as if you played it on a 4:3 screen (black bars on the sides to make the widescreen more narrow). That said, if you want to play games/consoles the support widescreen, then you have that option too.
      Just seems like a no brainer... A wider screen gives the option for 16:9/10 as well as 4:3. Whereas, with 4:3 screen, you can only play 4:3.

    I got the Transparent Black one, the RG353P is such an awesome handheld! It's actually exceeded my expectations. I love the logo, KODI media player, booming stereo speakers, long battery life. I've installed a 1TB micro sd card into mine and finished loading it with TV shows and music tracks. I also purchased a PS-Vita carrying case for mine, but it does not fit properly so I suggest you get the ANBERNIC RG353P case that comes with it. I'll eventually purchase the cold gray 353P later, both color schemes look rather nice.

      It's a decent well made product to me but just not well priced, it's priced the usual anbernic way, at least since the rg351p.
      But for this they may be banking on the nostalgia factor which seems to be one of the reason taki likes it that much.
      As someone from Asia, unfortunately this don't have any value for me :D

      @@samh5886 I feel like price is reasonable as direct competition to the RP2+ at $100 + $30 shipping with a similar feature set. Although they had come out swinging with a $85 -100 price tag they could have made waves IMO.
      I personally just feel the RP2+ with the retroid launcher and slightly more performance is a better deal, unless you are wanting to use Linux. I do have to wonder though if the RG503 is in direct competition with the RG353P in terms of price and value at that point though.

    • @samh5886
      @samh5886 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sunnygalli oh, the rp2 shipping would have been 15 USD for me. But yeah even at 130 in total the rp2+ would be a better overall deal unless you are playing systems where l3/r3 is a must ( can't really think of any for the older systems that it is capable of playing though) or the right analog get used alot.
      But seeing how anbernic still don't bother to drop the the rg552 price (which only trade blows with rp2+ performance wise), they seems to be making pricing decision strictly just based on their own systems and ignoring their competitors.
      Not sure if it's done on purpose (to have different variants with the same chip with some missing/imperfect areas in each model), but the rg503 is a different form factor with a better screen but yet missing touch screen and 1 less gb ram, so there is some forced product differentiation there..

      @@TakiUdon Hey Taki, can you do a "Special Video" where you showcase ALL your consoles, and do a pocketability test and score them?
      Just use regular jeans with standard front/back pocket. This is something I've wanted reviewers to address for so long, because there is a massive difference with the utility of an outdoors/"pocketable" device, contrast to an indoors/"portable" device. Besides a huge disadvantage in cooling (passive vs active), smaller battery capacity, smaller size also makes sacrifices in ergonomics.... but it works everywhere. Think of it like an iPhone 13 Max versus an iPad Mini, one you can take out everywhere, the other you will need to put into your backpack or purse. Even though everyone would call an iPad Mini as thin, light, and portable since it is comfortable when lounging around your house, and not too cumbersome like a thick/heavy Gaming Laptop.

    I own one of the RG350s, its a fun little console, especially if you want to play SNES games, never had any problems. It really craps the bed when you get into N64 or most 3d games. I always like the idea of these consoles more than actually playing them, but thats just on me not really getting into gaming anymore. This one looks good, especially if it can play "newer" games. The form factor is a lot better on this one as well, the RG350 works, but can be kind of uncomfortable. It also wasn't the easiest thing to get running, from what i remember, not as simple as just throwing in an SD card. While it wouldn't be SNES controller sized, I do wish one of these came with a bigger screen.

      No processor will make muddy N64 textures look good on a small screen. The PS1 library runs fine and dwarfs the N64 library. Point is, you can have more games than you'll ever have the time to play on a device that fits in your pocket.
      Besides, processing power is not really issue. Systems like N64 and Saturn are hard to emulate because they were complicated to program games for from the start.
      At certain price points, you have to curb your expectations.

    • @similaritiesendhere
      @similaritiesendhere 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We're basically at a bottleneck in emulation history. N64, Saturn, PS2, PS3 are more trouble than they're worth to emulate. The brute force a system requires to push those games would be better spent optimizing for Android and classic Windows games.
      Modern consoles are closer to PC's and will be much easier to emulate when their time comes around. That's what I mean by bottleneck. No point waiting for perfect N64 emulation when you can just buy a 2/3ds and wait for these systems to just bypass the days of difficult to emulate systems.
      It won't matter if a system can't play Goldeneye when it can play better FPS games more efficiently.

    I’ve ordered one. For me it should be a great device. I’m looking to emulate 16-bit and older 99% of the time with a sprinkle of PS1. Do I wish this had the specs of the RP2+, sure why not? Do I need those specs for what I want to do, no. More important to me are comfort, build quality, and controls.
    I really appreciate this detailed review. I’ve watched all of the English reviews released so far and yours is the best. This is the first I’ve heard of the Wi-Fi noise over the speaker. Great catch. I plan to have Wi-Fi off most of the time, except when I want to install updates, in order to preserve battery and reduce overhead. I would assume the noise is eliminated with Wi-Fi disabled?
    One thing I’m wondering about is RetroArch performance in Linux vs Android. The sense I’m getting is it’s faster booted into Android?

    It always makes me wonder how different all those reviews can be. It makes me think that the quality varies a lot. Even if it's the same product. In almost every other review on TH-cam they say that the Dreamcast performance is bad. On the android side they say it's ok. I watched so many reviews about this thing I don't remember anymore which one it was but in one review the person even said that the performance was better with the ReDream app, instead of the Flycast app. In this video here there was no audio crackling I could hear, right out the box with linux. In other reviews there was a lot of audio crackling, especially in Crazy Taxi. So that really makes me think that the quality of these chinese products varies a lot.

    If it really is 120Hz, then for the first time we will have a device capable of black frame insertion (BFI), meaning we can run RetroArch @ 60Hz BFI and get much closer to CRT motion quality, these game handhelds with 60Hz LCD displays are always a blurry mess and terrible for displaying retro games, most people are so used to it now though they don't realize just how bad it is, when a retro handheld comes out with a 6"+ 4:3 OLED with 240Hz BFI, it will be so much nicer to play retro games on and feel much closer to the real thing on a nice CRT, especially with scanlines.

  • @NoobixCube
    @NoobixCube 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this is Anbernic doing what Anbernic does best: solid basics. It's worth the price premium to get something with good build quality, and solid performance. Anbernic's biggest failure so far is the RG552, where they tried to go up-market, but despite the higher price tag, they couldn't match the performance or build quality of their competitors in the $200+ range. It was a slap-dash effort that they expected to sell on the merits of their brand, absent the technical merits of the device itself. The RG353 shows a return to form, more of what those of us who bought RG350 and RG351 devices expect from Anbernic. Good attention to detail on things like the fit of the screen lens, the buttons being the right size for the holes, the rigidity of the device, the texture of the plastics.
    Aside from blackballing reviewers for their honest reviews of the 552, Anbernic is above all a very responsive company. Like, the RG350 was _immediately_ revised with models like the 350P and 350M, based on criticisms from the users. The 351 series was largely just what they learned with the 350, but with a faster processor, but they let that success go to their heads with the 552. The 503 being cheaper, and the 353 being so generally good, show a return to form, and a renewed respect for the customers.

    So many of these handhelds that have come out since early 2021 are great, but man, I really want one of theme to actually take the NGP hint and make a microswitch dpad. There are so many fighting games that would play well on this form factor (4:3 screen, SNES-style button layout with rounded grip) that would benefit from it!

    • @Wobble2007
      @Wobble2007 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have one of the XB360 VS fight pad, it is about the same size as a 360 pad and shape, has a microswitch "D-Pad" and big chunky microswitch buttons, 6 of them and microswitch bumpers too, feels incredibly satisfying to use, very responsive and great for platformers, shmups, fighters, I use it with my PC, was only a score brand new from Amazon, it's basically an arcade cabinet controller miniaturized to a normal-sized gamepad. It's pretty similar to the NEO GEO CD PAD but with two extra main buttons and better ergonomics thanks to it's 360 type grip/case. A handheld with a similar microswitch D-Pad would be great, it might make more sense to make it a hybrid, a full MegaDrive/Genesis style D-Pad that goes full circle, but use microswitches instead of the usual contact pads, actually that sounds amazing anyway, a normal D-Pad with 8 or 16 way switches, that would be so much better than normal D-Pad, even a normal Nintendo D-Pad would feel better with microswitches, I really like that Idea.

    Hello Taki, you are the Best! Do you think it is dangerous the processor been so close to the battery on this device?

    It's looks like a smaller SupaBoy but no cartridge slot. Looks like Anbernic is trying to trump the Pocket Go S30.

    I love this thing but I hate the branding right in your line of sight. I would most likely have to change that out... other than that I am impressed.

    I like the rounded profile and stacked buttons. Likely nicer to use. Hope they learn from this. I kind of want to see another 351V but with better processor and stacked shoulderbuttons. That and a horizontally aligned handheld but with the same TATE ability as the official Egret 2 mini (probably won't happen but how awesome would that be?).

    How would you compare this to the PowKiddy RGB10 Max? I own that device and I really enjoy it. I’m wondering if this is worth purchasing as well or if it would be an unnecessary purchase.

    If you knew your way around the Linux OS you could easily enable HDMI hotplug and have it support both modes of operation with a toggle.

    Not fast enough to run more accurate emulators like BSNES that have enhancements as wide-screen support for a few games or high res Mode 7, full 100% speed maxed out at N64/NDS level, no OLED, not that bright screen, not high resolution enough to do things like realistic Pixel raster / scanline options... I still fail to see how this has much reason to exist when they phone you likely have can all this and more by just buying game pad clip (I recommend one with two joints like the Otterbox one for better weight distribution and to have the screen closer to your face) or dedicated clampshell mobile controller.
    No insult to the reviewer BTW because it was actually a fantastical video with all the necessary info to make up ones mind.

    My biggest issue with the 2+ is that it doesn't have l3 r3 and that damn slider. Mind you I did buy one before I really knew what I was looking for.

    Great review, I’m a newbie so just missing the last part. So once you get it, you’d download an emulator app for android and store ROMs in the internal storage? I’d like to see a how-to on that. And I assume there’s no slot for additional storage. Thanks!

    I was still considering the RG351P since I like the form factor and 4:3 screen. Maybe I'll set my sights on this now instead...

    This counts as pocket friendly if you don't have anything else in your pockets, which I most definitely do. Still hoping for an update to the RG280M.

    Hi Taki Udon, I bought first RG353p and it burn out and dead. Someone told me you have a video that talk about adding some thermal paste to help it from over heat because the battery is too close to the PCB. Can you do a video on how to do this please. So my second one will not dead as well. Thank you. Your subscribed always Johnny . Looking for more video on your new Anbernic Android side on how to added play store so we can download our android licenses over to this device. 😊 I have no luck.

    Hey this handheld looks very cool BUT please tell me Taki why did you put a Windows 95 background on the Android OS? Does this thing have the ability to play any Windows 95 games? Or is it just for aesthetic purposes because you like how the apps can be laid out on the background? Or do you just really like the Windows 95 logo? The reason I ask is because ever since this whole handheld craze started I've always wanted something capable of playing retro Windows games on the go. Do you know of any devices that can have Windows 95 be installed to them and play games? I know you can achieve this through DOSbox but I'm not sure about it's compatibility when it comes to the Win95 games I would want.

      I can honestly say that I have never once touched it on accident. It's also worth stating that the worst it can do is put the device to sleep.
