"I love the four of them SO MUCH" Forget the science fiction aspect of this show for a second (hard to do, it's incredible), the character arcs, motivations, dialog, and acting are top tier on this series, bar none! Enjoy the ride, and get a seat belt for your chair for seasons 2 and 3.
Yep a lot of people have a hard time getting into the first season because there is so much info dumping and environmental storytelling about the world building and people often find the first season slow but the fact you are invested this early is a good sign you are in for the long haul
I'm so glad you're loving the show! It's always great to find a reactor who gets it like we do! The moment Holden revealed he logged the distress call, the reaction of Amos and Naomi telling Amos she knew and his reaction of betrayal from her. Towards the end of this episode seeing our four crew members on the Rocinante... gives me chills! Especially watching Amos paint the Rocinante logo on the hull! Miller definitely is on to something big to get fired! Back on Earth Chrisjen is still digging into what's going on in the solar system and any threats to Earth! She is absolutely a badass! Looking forward to the next one!
Glad you're loving the show. One of the great things about the series is the authors of the books were not only active on the production side throughout, but they also supported making character and story tweaks to support the TV series. Also, the cast is just sooooo goooooooood!
Their involvement was very extensive. Ty Franck was actually in the writing room for all 6 seasons while Daniel Abraham consulted via regular conferences with the writers and showrunners. They split it up that way as they were still writing the last books in the series when the television production started so one of them had to coordinate things with their publisher while the other coordinated things with the TV production company. As you mentioned they have stated in interviews they saw the TV series as a way to change some minor things they wish they had done better in the books.
Watching you love this show is the next best thing to watching it for the first time. :) and Holden is my favourite. The guy who doesn't want the responsibility.. and lacks the experience.. but just can't help but to do the right thing.
Amos wasn't painting graffiti; he was painting nose art on the Rocinante. It's the sort of thing they put on military aircraft during WWII. You can get a t-shirt or hoodie with the Rocinante nose art. Reddit actually has a 960x1600 wallpaper of it, too. 😄
I love this show so much! There is no wasted scene or throw away lines, there is intention in every moment of the show. Even things that seem small and unimportant like the scene with Alex and Amos in the club are major and come to mean more the further you get into the series or on a rewatch.
Season 1 is such a rich story. I'm always shocked when people later say it was slow and not as good as what came afterward. I guess its noir tone and their struggles to catch on to so many "new" concepts taken from mid-20th Century science fiction might be a factor.
When I first started, I knew about from its "slow" start from recommendations I'd seen online, and prepared my self to slog through it. Imagine my shock when season 1 pretty much entralled me from begining to end with its dense plot and world buildng. I guess people these days aren't used to this kind of pacing?
This series is definitely one of my favourites of all times. In terms of SciFi, Deep Space 9 is the only other series to come remotely close. I don't know why I am watching a reaction video to a series I've already watched, but I absolutely love you being emotional and sharing it with us. You've got yourself another subscriber.
I'm late to the party, but my favorite line of this ep was "if Julie were here right now she'd spit in your face". Miller reacted like he was punched in the gut because he knew it was true. You had a great reaction and commentary on that.
Appreciate your point re Chrisjen, she is quite ruthless in the pursuit of her goals, but still a grounded decent human being. As you say, rare to see that in a female character. They tend to become one note characters as writers attempt to emphasise their "strength"
Dawes got that scar/brand around his neck from prolonged use of the really crappy helmets impoverished Belters had to wear when mining asteroids. Unlike the helmets themselves, the collar's poorly-insulated metal, with the outer part exposed to the Sun. Pretty soon the OPA took these brands as a badge of honor and defiance against the Inners, a reminder of their ongoing oppression. You'll see more OPA members wearing tattoos modeled after the collar brand in future episodes.
I always say, that line by Alex when they are about to head out: "Ship is ready. Are you?" is like a message to the viewers, because from now on it is ramping up to go absolutely bonkers and beyond.
Captain Yao handed Lopez a memory chip when she ordered him to take Holden to the Tachi and get him safely to Mars. That chip contained every file on the Donager's computers regarding the destruction of the Cant and the attack on The Donager. Martian spacesuits have pockets in them designed to carry data chips and keep them from being damaged by the perils of outer space. Col. Johnson as a Marine commanding officer could be expected to know about that pocket, and know about the likelihood a Martian officer might be carrying critical data with him when fleeing the scuttling of the battleship. That's why he posed that question to Holden. BTW, what did you see or hear in those flashbacks to make you want to think Johnson should be labeled as "The Butcher of Anderson Station". I know, Naomi called him "The Butcher", and the show added that text overlay to the scene when you first see Col. Johnson. but what did you actually see him or hear him do to merit that awful label?
As someone who has been reading sci-fi since I was six years old (along with fantasy. Faffhrd and the Grey Mouser series by Fritz Leiber is fantastic), I immediately fell in love with The Expanse. When I was a kick, my parents enlisted the help of my teachers to lean on me strongly to kick my sci-fi habit and read "good books" instead. I didn't listen. What were considers to be the finest books produced by Western Civilazation couldn't hold a candle to the works of the early sci-fi masters. I sat in a movie theatre with my girlfriend when the trailer for the first Star Trek movie appeared on the screen. The audience erupted with laughter. Sci-Fi was considered entertainment for little kids. In a way, both the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises both hurt and helped the sci-fi franchise, with Star Wars being the biggest offender in that, yes, the stories protrayed with the flashy new and much more realistic CGI and special effects were nevertheless children's stories. The Avatar franchise is even worse in that respect. Stunning tech, but stories for children to enjoy. There are hundreds of magnificent stories in all those books I read way back then. But it seems the big hitters like George Lucas and James Cameron prefer to write their own. But the treasure trove of 80 years' worth of great sci-fi books is still out there waiting for a monied fan to bring them to the big screen. You should read the Weapon Makers and The Weapon Shops of Isher, two fairly short but entirely amazing books by A.E. Van Vogt. They would make for amazing movies. And maybe The World of Tiers series by Philip Jose Farmer, too, just to get your feet wet in the ociean of science fiction for you to take a deep dive in.
Oh my god! We have so much in common! Science Fiction was the first literary genre I fell in love with (the love is still there, but my literary taste has broadened a lot - I read everything from Greek tragedies to contemporary novels, as long as it is good). I totally share your contempt for Star Wars (except the Empire strikes back, which was pretty decent) and Avatar. Finally somebody, who knows Philip José Farmer! The World of Tiers is a wonderful mix of SF & Fantasy. His "The Lovers" is one of the best SF short novels ever written, but I also appreciate his funny and naughty stories. Van Vogt is a master on the level of Stanislaw Lem (Solaris, The Invincible, Pilot Pirx etc.). There are two stories, I would love to see made into a TV series: The Commonwealth Saga by Peter F. Hamilton and The Forever War by Joe Haldeman. World of Tiers would theoretically be nice, but if you wanted to do it right, it would bust every budget.
@@mina_en_suiza As soon as I enact my plan to rule the world, the first edict will involve changing elemenetary school reading curricula with to mostly SF&F. I have to believe that Farmer's estate remains active in the protection of its intellectual property. Very few of his works can be found free online in the form of audiobooks. That makes me think his estate knows the value of his creations and is awaiting TV or movie deals to come knocking. As for the World of Tiers, yes, it would be expensive, and would need a trilogy to tell the story of the first three books. That would be enough for me. IMHO, Farmer wrote great adventure yarns, but seemed unable to bring a story to an end. The biggest moviemaking problem, I think, would be to use Avatar tech to create the half-horses. gworls, and eagles. CGI would work just fine for long distance shots of the massivet cliffs between the separate plateaus. I'd cast you as Anana, unless you'd prefer the role of Podarge.
The Expanse is easily the most realistic/hard Sci-Fi ever to grace TV/Movies. But honestly to me that isn't even the best thing about it. For me it's how real the characters are, how the show is about humanity and human moments.
I'm just wondering if your gonna continue reacting to this show, it's my favorite series in tv-show history - and i love your reactions to it. It's been a good two weeks since this last reaction came out... and i've seen you've had a number of vids more recently - so I'm wondering why u haven't had a "The Expanse" reaction upload for a minute,, especially because there was jus a few days separating each of your reactions to the first 6 episodes. Hoping everything's okay with you and that you'll continue with this series!
It's debatable whether it's real "hard scifi" as it relies on a magic engine that is so energy efficient that it can cause 1/3 g acceleration for the ships, but it does try and stay within the other laws of physics which is nice. And I think it'd be fair to classify The Expanse as a "space opera". And I love me some space opera.
There are great female characters in this show. I mean there are great characters in this show all round, but unlike most shows 'The Expanse' portrays powerful woman correctly.
I am glad you noticed the scar around Dawes' neck. That scar is from poor quality helmets that, I think, leaked at the collar, and would suck and pull on the neck. Younger belters later would get tattoos to represent those scars, out of respect for the belters that had to endure those space suits. This show is now my all time favorite sci-fi series, due to just how good the writing, acting, production of the show, and the story arc. Firefly would be this good if it had continued, but I am glad this show was made.
If you want to see the actor playing Holden, Steven Strait as an edgy teen you should check out the Disney Superhero movie Sky High. I think you'd enjoy it if for nothing else what Steven Strait looks like with long hair. One thing I love about the world building is everyone has their own motivation as to why everyone are selfish assholes.
Steven Strait was also in a cute little Indie movie called City Island (I used to sail there so I couldn't help but watch it!) its very cute and he is so good looking in it!!
I like how you keep dissing the Fidora just because everyone elselikes to dis them to yet nothing about a baseball cap as if they arent the dumbest looking things ever invented
I like white blonde women; I also like traditional beauty.. but you are right, Hollywood does not portray real life in any regard. You can fall in love with nearly any women regardless of skin color or hair color.
When I try to introduce The Expanse to someone I describe it as: "The best show you've never heard about."
"I love the four of them SO MUCH"

Beware, the cliffhanger endings can get down right abusive at times... 😲🤣🤣
This show has a surplus of badass sassy women, better be ready.

I agree with you about Athena Karkanis (Octavia Muss) she also was on Manifest tv series.
i was never a hard scifi fan either but this show got me with the scientific accuracy and the fact its set in a somewhat believable possible future.
Keep them coming please!

You are my new favorite reactor to The Expanse. I hope you continue watching.
Same! Kinda wondering why it's been so long since she uploaded her last reaction to this show.
Your reaction(s) are such good vibes, great! :)
If you love this season so much already, then you are definitely not prepared for seasons 2 3 and 5...
The Expanse is easily the most realistic/hard Sci-Fi ever to grace TV/Movies. But honestly to me that isn't even the best thing about it. For me it's how real the characters are, how the show is about humanity and human moments.

You will find that the Expanse does diversity casting correctly. The cast is very ethnic and gender diverse yet no one is there to fill some quota.
You are damn right. It's such a shame that is so underrated. Unfortunately I think it's because it is SciFi and it's not a mainstream genre
Don't worry, lady.
Answers are coming.
What the hell is House of Dragons
Avasarala is a well-liked grandmother, not necessarily a "good mother." Her kid is dead.
