The Martian "shuttle" isn't a shuttle, it's a Martian Corvette-class frigate...now disguised as a gas freighter for this mission to recover Lionel Polanski.
I don’t consider technical details to be spoilers, but just in case, light spoiler warning. Below are more stats regarding the warship Rocinante, if you like. Martian corvette class frigate. Max passengers 30. Colloquially a “gunship” (6 CQB/point defense canons) with missile capability (2 launchers and 20 missiles, 2 nuke, 18 plasma/EMP). Commonly used to deliver commandos or marines, long range patrol, and close combat support. While designed and built before stealth coating was perfected, still built with low sensor profile in mind. Closest thing to AI in this world is the Tachi ship’s computer; incapable of speech but highly intuitive and fully integrated into all ship systems, it DOES take spoken commands. Including a highly advanced navigation system.
The Expanse plot line is like a sliding window in that as the oldest mysteries get solved they introduce new ones for you to chew on so you kind of have a constant level of confusion and awareness simultaneously. The writers do a pretty good job of maintaining that style of storytelling right through the entire series.
You can expose yourself to space for a few seconds. Obviously the amount you are exposed and how long is a factor. Also the damage to the lungs due to the pressure differential is the most immidiate cause of death, but you can mitigate it by emptying your lungs before exposure.
Naomi's neck tattoo (and similar ones around the joints, which you may have seen on other Belters) are meant to be reminiscent of the burns marks one would have seen on older generations of Belters thanks to cheap vacuum suits with crappy seals where helmet/gloves/etc would connect to the rest of the suit.
Great reaction! The scene with Diogo and Uncle Mateo is when I knew Expanse would be a GREAT show, not just good. Seemingly a minor scene, the emotional power when you realize that Uncle Mateo is spacing Diogo in order to save his life is heartbreaking. There's quite a few scenes like that in the Expanse and they elevate the show beyond ordinary sci fi.
Technically, spacing is an execution. Mateo gave Diogo his suit, breather, and helmet, and allowed him time to get suited up before opening the outer door. What he did to Diogo is called "putting him on the float."
NASA ran vacuum tests on chimps and dogs in the 60s (those reports are available on NASA.gov). They also had a 60s vacuum accident with a human (the video of that is available on TH-cam). NASA determined that a human could remain conscious for up to 30 seconds in vacuum and (if rescued) could survive up to three minutes of vacuum without any permanent effects. The experience would be, shall we say, sub-optimal...by far. It would involve painful bends, boiling of the fluid in the mouth and eyes, simultaneous explosive vomiting and explosive diarrhea. Something to remember...these early exercises are re-training the audience in real space physics from the space fantasy we've been fed for decades. "Welwala" connotes a person born in the gravity well of an inner planet and is thus always prefers that heavy gravity. "Wala" is derived from Hindu for "person," thus it means "gravity well person." When applied to a Belter, it means someone who loves the inner planets people more than his own Belter people. Diogo's uncle Mateo had been listening to a Belter OPA propagandist talking about hurling asteroids at Earth; that gave him the idea of hurling his rocks at the Martian patrol. That ties into Dawes' story of his sister. Belters live constantly under the threat of the "cold equations." Every Belter knows someone, or knows of someone, who has had to make hard life and death decisions for himself or others. I don't know whether Mateo's rocks destroyed the Martians, but we did see the You noticed Naomi's neck tattoo. Did you notice that Dawes had a raised scar around his neck very much like Naomi's tattoo? The old rock hoppers had to use shoddy space gear that burned where it contacted the skin. In honor of the old rock hoppers, younger Belters who've gotten their "rock hopper" experience get various tattoos like the helmet burns of their elders. We learned that Amos was raised in brothels and respects sex workers. Johnson was surprised that a Martian had sacrificed himself to rescue Holden. But having been a soldier, Johnson was aware that Lopez' armor would have a combat recorder. Dawes is the OPA chief on Ceres, but doesn't have any legal leadership status with the Earth corporation that runs Ceres. Johnson is the OPA chief on Tycho, but is also the head of Tycho operations for an Earth corporation.
The bulk of the cloud of pebbles went wide of the Martian patrol ship. Only enough hit to make it clear Mateo had attacked them. And drew a high-explosive reprisal.
Love your reactions. You're doing a great job of identifying important factors in the story, without falling into the trap of many other reactors who try to guess out what's happening by judging The Expanse using the tropes of other Sci Fi shows. Answers will come, as will many other questions,
I believe that the etymology of "wellwalla" probably breaks down to "well-lover" meaning specifically the gravity-wells of Earth or Mars, and the inner solar system in general.
Or maybe 'well wallah'. In British English a wallah, from Hindi and Sanskrit, is a person involved with or in charge of something. So, "gravity well people".
I've watched probably 10 different reactors for this show, some that had 3-5 people. You are by far the best reactor for this show I've seen. Not only your general discussion and commentary but also how much you notice and appreciate things like the physics and camera angles.
The neck tattoo you see on Naomi is a Belter right-of-passage because in the old days the neck-seal of spacesuits would cause scars around the necks of the people who wore them, and now that marking is a source of Belter pride. And the memory chip that Fred took from Lopez's armor was the one that Captain Yao gave to Lopez with all of the data from their encounter with the stealth ships (which BTW were that tonnage/rating of Tachi, but had railguns).
Yeah, brief exposure to space isn't the immediately catastrophic thing we used to see in space movies. The most damage would be from the sudden pressure change if your lungs were full. Glad you're enjoying the complexity of the story. I like stories where you're not spoon fed, and the characters are having to figure things out as they go. What's great about this show is that because the books are there already, they have a great feel for how they can streamline certain elements, pad out other parts, and still get to the required spot eventually. I've not doubt you'll put the pieces together just ahead of most of the reveals.
Different factions of the OPA have different goals / ways of operating- some are more radical & aggressive , some more political. It helps to think of Dawes as kind of like a mob boss - (who is slowly working on taking control of Ceres) - To a lot of belters he’s a Robin Hood, to earth & mars he’s a criminal.
Loving your reaction and analysis! Like another commenter has said, things on Phoebe are a foot! The nephew that was spaced is the same kid Miller caught stealing water. His is Diogo. He has tried stealing fir a living and now tried honestly asteroid mining but that hasn't worked out! Pay special attention to the small reaction of characters within scenes. It's very well done and adds so much to the story! You're right about wanting to binge, for God's sake don't! Each episode needs to marinate before moving on! Looking forward to the next one!
The crew of the Knight are not aboard a shuttle. The Tachi that left the Donnager is actually the space-going equivalent of an Escort Destroyer in our modern, wet navy.
for the first time in watching tv sci-fi for 60+ years, the physics can be trusted so much the 'sounds' in space can be forgiven and enjoyed as cool embellishments. I predicted the binge urge and it can't be bad reacting if your audience has the same urge...
I don’t have a problem with how they are handling the “sound in space”. It depends who is doing the observing: the (omniscient) audience or the characters. When the drives power up, the sound has a narrative purpose. It informs the audience that it is a thrusting “burn”, and not just a bright light. (A”light” drive would actually be the most efficient propulsion, except the acceleration of the ship would be slow.) On the other hand, the characters aren’t going to respond to the noise of a ship’s drive from a distance. There are multiple times in the show where people are making a space walk, turn off their suit radios, and they only hear each other when there is helmet-to-helmet conduction.
They tried no sound in space for the (very good) movie "Sunshine" and even had Prof. Brian Cox as scientific advisor, but everyone agreed that it just doesn't work in a drama. We love a big noisy explosion too much.
True, I always think of it as, this is probably what the characters are hearing from inside the ship. But I also don't think about it too much, too many good Juicy things happening!
Cpt. Yao gave Lopez a thumb drive containing everything the Donager had learned about the six ships that had attacked it and forced the scuttling. Lopez presumbly put that thumb drive in a pocket in his suit designed to optimize protection of the data. As a former Marine Colonel, Fred knew about that pocket and suspected Lopez was a data mule.Everybody wants to know who the bad guys are, but Fred Johnson now possesses the best data to use to solve that mystery. Fred Johnson is an exceptionally honorable man. After the events at Anderson Station, he clearly must have resigned his commission with the UN Marines and ended up as the head honcho at Tycho Station. His resignation, and his acceptance by Belters as their leader at Tycho Station, are important clues as to the proper way to interpret the events depicted in the flashbacks in s1.e5.

Those walls around Manhattan are already under construction, because of what happened in 2012. In _The Expanse_ there seems to be a sustainable equilibrium, but the populace still have to cope with the past and its continuing effects.
Mateo is a Rock Hopper, an asteroid miner. His intention is to turn a big mineral-rich rock into a cluster of smaller, easily-sold boulders. But Diogo sets the charges too strong and instead of fracturing it, he pulverizes it. (Never send a boy to do a man's work.)
Wellwala is a portmanteau of Well{referring to a gravity well, aka a planet} and wala, which I believe is from the Hindi word for lover. So Welwala means planet lover. Basically its comparable to the old insult of being an Uncle Tom to the African American population of the US.
You can expose yourself to hard vacuum for a short time and the damage will be minimal if you fully exhale. The cosmic radiation on the other hand would probably do you some serious harm.
"I guess I need to know what is the dynamic between Fred Johnson and Dawes". You are the payoff for the writers. I don't think most people really considered this this early but it is clearly there to wonder about. The OPA, who is running it? What is the agenda?
