Random fact: the Merovingian's goons were watching old Universal horror movies (and Persephone shot them with silver bullets) because in the Matrix, all our old mythical monsters like werewolves and vampires are renegade programs hanging around doing weird nonsense.
This was released as part of a big multimedia push. There was _The Animatrix_ which was a collection of animated shorts that filled in the backstory and fleshed out the world, which included 'Last Flight of the Osiris', which showed how the resistance learned about the army of Sentinels. There was also _Enter the Matrix_ which was a PS2-era videogame where you played as Niobe and her 2nd-in-command, Ghost, before and during the events of this movie. There was footage filmed during the making of this movie which was only used in the game, because the game and the movie told the story from different perspectives.
Not so much A big multimedia push as THE big multimedia push; I think it was the first time there was a big transmedia thing combining comics and anime and videogames and an MMO and banger soundtrack albums, and while there were a few other attempts afterwards, no-one else has ever really done it to such a scale. I think one of the reasons the sequels met with such a bad response was the hype was absolutely off the scale.
@@hyperspacey It definitely wasn't the first. Multimedia projects have existed since long before The Matrix did it in 2003. Hell, there are even properties like Transformers that _started_ as a multimedia project right from the beginning, with TV shows, comics, toys, and video games all tying into each other and releasing in tandem and feeding the sales of each other. But existing franchises did it too. Star Wars did a particularly successful one back in the 90s called "Shadows of the Empire" which featured a novel, a junior novelization, a six-issue comic series, a video game, trading cards, a soundtrack, a role-playing game, various toys and action figures, and more all revolving around one central story line set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. In fact, similar to how The Matrix used their multimedia project to increase hype for the Matrix sequels, Lucasfilm did their multimedia project (along with other projects) in order to build hype for The Phantom Menace. So while the Matrix multimedia project was definitely big, it was not at all the first of its kind. In fact, I'd say it was really the last of its kind, at least on that scale.
@@hdns4 All the Transformers stuff besides the toys was literally advertising for the toys. The crap comics and terrible videogames and that utterly dreadful cartoon got farted out at random points through the 80s; I don't think it was until well after The Movie that any semblance of a strategy existed and it certainly wasn't organised into an 18-month window. It was barely one level above He-Man in the cocaine-fuelled "what can we sell before Democrats get back in and repeal these marketing reforms" avalanche of the mid-80s. There was a lot of Star Wars stuff but it was an uncoordinated mess spread across years, and Shadows... didn't even put a mark in the public consciousness.
1. Bane was the guy who said "Oh God" to which Smith replied "Smith will suffice". Smith copied himself over Bane's consciousness then answered the phone to upload into Bane's physical body. 2. Smith's "package" is not referring to the spoon; that's a reference to "there is no spoon" from the first film. Smith's package was the earpiece he sent to Neo at the beginning of the film. 3. I honestly have no idea why you're so suspicious of Councilor Hamann 4. I'm glad you're watching these with an open mind. I absolutely love this trilogy, the fourth one is still pretty interesting, and the Animatrix is also really cool.
Possible explanation for #3: Old white guys in movies are inherently untrustworthy. It's not that good old white guys in movies don't exist, but they're rare enough that any old white guy in a movie should be treated with suspicion.
I gotta say, "the councilman and the Architect are the same guy because eyebrows" isn't even in the top 100 craziest ideas I read back in the day. Heck it's not even in the top 100 craziest ideas I came out with
I honestly don’t understand all the hate that the Matrix sequels get, I’m glad that you’re watching them. I love all three movies personally, they never get old. Also, yes Bane is Smith, your hunch is correct. They showed that in the first scene revealing how Smith assimilates people. One of the people he assimilate went back to the real world, and since he was infected, Smith is now in his body and outside of the Matrix
People dont like the sequels because they are a complete subversion of expectation and dismantle any previous thoughts the audience has about what the previous film meant - within the bounds of the film's story that is, meaning with no regard to any social commentary like being a trans allegory or a commentary on consumer capitalism. In the first film we learn Neo is the One, but only after he personally realized he was the One, whereas in the beginning he wasnt the One and the Oracle confirmed he wasn't, because he didn't yet believe he was. In the second film all that gets completely and totally dismantled. We find out that Neo isnt the One per say, that the prophecy about the One is just part of the algorithm of control and him believing that he is the One thus unlocking his powers was a predicted inevitability of the system. There is also a commentary within the bounds of the story about about the nature of free will and do rebellion and revolt really mean anything if free will doesnt exist. There is a line from one of the games in a world renowned game series that is really fitting that goes "Without free will there is no difference between rebellion and submission." Then at the end when he has powers outside the matrix we learn that maybe he is special for some reason and we are left on that cliffhanger. This is why people dont like the sequels.
22:07 - "Why not kiss her?" Fun fact: in the video game, Enter The Matrix, there are live-action parts with the actors from this movie and she does kiss Jada Pinkett-Smith (Niobe).
Why that guy looks familiar is the same reason you didn't recognize "she who shall not be named" until you saw her outside the Matrix. We saw Smith (former Agent Smith the program, to be clear I'm not having anyone's actual real life name "in my mouth") copy himself into that guy earlier but he looked all "Matrix cool".
There's a scene in the original Matrix between Tank (the first operator of the Nebercunezzur) and Neo where Tank explains that Zion is located near the earth's core.
I'd definitely suggest you try "The Animatrix"if you enjoyed this one! It expands on the world of the Matrix a lot and it's got great animation. 13:30 Bane's mind was corrupted by Smith(who's pretty much a virus)and Smith was cutting himself because he's never felt pain in his life. He was the one pushing for his ship to be included in the mission and he set off the EMP early. The Oracle mentions vampires and such at the bench. In the game "Enter the Matrix"(where you can play as Niobe or her second in command Ghost)and it runs concurrently to the film(and has footage not released in the film), you get to fight the Merovingians henchman, who are pretty much vampires and you use a splinter of wood as a "stake"(which is said to disrupt their code). As Ghost and Niobe, you get to kiss Persephone(Ghost is secretly in love with Trinity and Persephone guesses when Niobe says her lovers name is John(meaning Lock), she's lying, as she's really in love with Morpheus. The twins are ghosts and the one Persephone shoots is a werewolf(hence the silver bullet). I'd also suggest you never watch "Ressurections", lol. "Revolutions"is still good.
No. Councilor Hermann, played by actor Anthony Zerbe, is not the same character or actor for the Architect. However, Anthony Zerbe did play an evil Starfleet Admiral, as one does.
The sequels are great, the complaints mainly come from the films being more philosophical rather than focusing on action and a simple plot (which is fine to think that but there was always a deeper message). It's an understandably confusing story but all 4 movies are great when you understand the themes/message. Also from what I remember, Enter the Matrix is a fun game/side story set during this movie. I recommend people check it out if they can, but I've heard the PC port was really poorly done so idk how playable it is these days without the original xbox
The Animatrix is definitely worth a watch (released before Reloaded), as well as either playing or watching cutscenes from Enter the Matrix (which was released between Reloaded and Revolutions and follows Niobe & Ghost). The Matrix Online isn't playable anymore, but there are some cinematics that show some events that take place after Revolutions.
You definitely pick up on larger thematic ideas and subtext and the various influences going on in these and the Star Wars prequels more than a lot of people. And yes we absolutely need the Persephone kissing Trinity cut. Love your channel!
I love when you asked the question, "Would it have been better for him to tell her about the dream?" Because I'm instantly returned to, "Would you still have broken the vase if I hadn't said anything?" Remember, we've already made our choices. Now we just have to understand why. 😄
7:16 - Hi to Gina Torres, who was married to Laurence Fishburne in real life during the filming of this movie. Wikipedia says married until 2018, but I don't know what happened and don't care to. She's awesome in Firefly.
Randall Duk Kim who played the Keymaker was also in the John Wick series, Master Oogway in Kung Fu Panda, and appeared in _that_ live action adaptation of Dragon Ball, (among other things.)
This is weird, I literally rewatched this trilogy yesterday for the first time in like 15 years now a new reaction upload to one of them 🤣 THE MATRIX IS REAL
"I dreamed a dream but now that dream is gone from me" is a quote from the Book of Daniel, spoken by King Nebuchadnezzar as Daniel tries to interpret his dreams for him. Morpheus' ship is named after that king.
In the Matrix video game, there’s a scene where Persephone kisses Captain Naobi (Monica kisses Jada). Also check out the Animatrix. It’s 10 short films that help explain a lot of the 3 movies.
I like how you caught the Anime inspiration. The Wachowski's said when they would pitch fight scenes they would bring in clips from Anime to get their point across. Just wait for the third film. Also, another filmmaking note- they actually built that highway for this shoot. I believe it was a 2 mile set for that whole shoot.
I love the matrix sequels so much. Rather than just hitting the same notes as the first one they expand and complicate the world in so many interesting ways.
Marcus Chong who played Tank didn’t return for the sequels, after a falling out with Warner and the sisters allegedly over contract negotiations, resulting in him allegedly sending ‘violent threatening phone calls’ resulting in him being effectively blackballed in the industry, treated in a manner ‘akin to a terrorist.’ His last feature film role was in 2005, his last made for tv role was in 2010, and his most recent short film role was in 2013. He made a documentary about his life and career, and gave an interview to Talkblogradio, though I’ve never seen either. Harold Perrineau known for Lost, Oz, and Romeo+Juliet among other roles both before and since, was hired to play the replacement role of Link, brother in law to the late Tank and Dozer with dialogue being included to explain the off-screen development, (as in Tank not surviving the events of the first movie.)
As much as I love The Matrix series, I can't watch the scene in Zion without cracking up, and I blame Justin Timberlake, Sean William Scott, and Andy Dick. "Oh, my God! It's MORPHEUS!!!! He's having a huge o---y at his place, later tonight. At least, that's what many of us have heard." "IT IS TRUE. WHAT MANY OF YOU HAVE HEARD." "YESSS!!! Morpheus!? What can we expect at this o---y!?" "MACHINES!" "I'm out." 2003 MTV Movie Awards opening. It's wildly crass, but the fact that it's blended in with actual scenes from the film is hilarious and brilliant. "Wait a second, you're that boy from NSYNC! Neo, you know NSYNC?" "I've... never heard of them." "Really? Show him some moves!" (Justin Timberlake starts doing the Robot) "If I had to guess... I'd say you're from the Machine world." "No, Dawg, I'm just doing the Robot, here. You should try it." "No." "Oh, come on, Neo, get in there!" "What if I can't? What happens if I fail?" "Lighten up, it's JUST the Robot." "No. I can't. I won't."
Seeing this at the cinema made me cross. Between Niobe's team and their part of the mission that you don't even get to see cos it's just in the playstation game, to the POMPOMPOMPOMMM TO BE CONCLUDED ending.. it turned me off the series so much I didn't even see the third part til I got the box set reduced on DVD 😅 I'm a lot more forgiving of it now. If you can, please watch The Animatrix collection, because there are some ideas explored in those shorts that not only support the trilogy, but also do something really different with it! 🥰 Love you and your reactions and observations - can't wait to see what you make of the next part! 🖤
32:15 I think he was referring to other cities with the same characteristics.....ok maybe I could be wrong 36:06 my personal theory: there were 5 different "Neos" in other cities, wiped out and re-done again until reaching the "Neo" we know, since in the previous movie said Zion is the last human city, the machines lied to the humans so they could fight and lose.....I think I prefer to ask to the Wachowsky
technically these last two movies are one big one. the creators are from my same hood and grew up watching all the same anime and kung fu movies from the 90s and 90s so the fact other people like these movies is wild to me. we had all the action figures for these movies and art books, some of our favorite artist made stuff for these movies and weta legends, so many legends.
I'm so curious what you'll have to say about The Animatrix and Resurrections, because they're both so different from the trilogy (and controversially so in the latter case, even though it's entirely by design).
Fun fact: the dreadlocked albino weirdos are played by twins most known in the UK for being handymen on a long-running home makeover show (Better Homes?). This will never stop being funny to me.
The animatrix is the best piece of supplementary content released before reloaded that I don't wanna spoil and the enter the matrix game shows what niobe(Jada pinkett Smith's character) was doing during certain sequence in this movie.
There's a TH-cam channel called Matrix Explained which has been picking apart all the movies, games, etc. in this franchise for years. But all their videos are full of spoilers, so watch all the movies and other stuff first if you don't want them spoilt.
Interestingly Captain Mifune is played by Maiava Nathanial Lees who is a Samoan actor from Aotearoa, now whether we’re supposed to assume the Japanese name on a character played by the Samoan actor was because the _character’s_ parents were Samoan and Japanese, or his casting was based on him ‘fitting a look/stereotype’ for older East Asian military characters despite not being East Asian himself, I can’t say for sure, now I’m not necessarily accusing the sisters of racism over their casting choice, as in I’m not saying they definitely picked a talented actor who wasn’t white, and belonged to one group of people to play a character from a different group because the sisters and the studio felt that racialised people were interchangeable, but I’m also not discounting it.
17:03 Lmao, memory of a goldfish 😛 21:55 I love a comment I saw on a video of this scene: "'Warner Brothers, I assure you, cuckolding Trinity is essential to the plot.'" 32:07 Hon, there are Sentinels on their way to destroy Zion at that moment, in the real world. That's basically the whole conflict of the movie 😂 38:34 Yes. Earlier in the movie you saw Smith take over Bane's body before leaving The Matrix.
Any issues with the CGI you have from within the Matrix Reloaded, especially during the Burly Brawl, are explained by the Matrix itself being unable to keep up with this event; this has never happened before, as you find out later, so it's having to drop the level of detail to keep the simulation stable *and* at a high enough frame-rate to keep people from noticing issues with “reality”. The dominos/bowling pin sounds when Neo throws a Smith into a bunch of Smiths were because, again, this had never happened before. The Matrix dynamically picked the sound it thought was the closest match to something like that! Remember, this is a sophisticated virtual reality that’s having to adapt to a new, more powerful Neo on the fly. When you think of it this way, not only does it makes sense, it makes MORE sense than if they picked normal, fleshy knockdown sounds or actually had the modern CGI of today, which I feel would actually look worse. The Twins are ghosts from the horror Matrix (that the Oracle described before the burly brawl -- Smith also mentioned prior Matrix versions in the first movie, like the Paradise version). Persephone shot a werewolf with a silver bullet before the Chateau fight ("notoriously difficult to kill; how many people do you think keep silver bullets in their guns?"); they are also legacies from prior Matrix versions. This was explored more in the video game: Enter The Matrix. Some people think that the Merovingian and Persephone are prior iterations of The One/Trinity (“I once knew what love felt like; I want to sample it again”). Bane was the guy in the end shot... the one that Smith took over in a brief, earlier scene (“Oh, God!” / “‘Smith’ will suffice.”) and went through the phone line overwriting the brain of real-world Bane. Bane/Smith then later went to kill Neo in Zion before the kid (from The Animatrix) showed up with the spoon and effectively stopped him.
After the first movie the most important piece is the Animatrix. It would have been better to watch it before this one but the second best time is immediately.
I love all 4 movies, I love Neo and Trinity and I love the Wachowskis. Do watch The Animatrix before Part 3, it's a good piece of lore dump for the world and very well animated for it's time as well. It was Gotham Knight before Gotham Knight. To make clear - The Architect is telling Neo that the destruction and rebuilding of Zion is cyclical, just like the conflict between Humans and Machine. Every time "The One" (which our Neo is the sixth one think Avatar the Last Airbender rules of Reincarnation) comes face to face with The Architect, he gives him a choice. Enter the Source (door 1) Reboot the whole system and save humanity from extinction by restarting the simulation or go back in the Matrix (Door 2), save Trinity but let the War wage on which will possibly render humanity extinct. Where earlier The One(s) chose to reboot and save humanity, our Neo chose Trinity, let the war happen and let the chips fall where they may. Also, Meg, if you haven't - watch Sense8. It's awesome. The best thing on Netflix to date.
You are a very intelligent young lady! I really enjoyed your reaction to these films. The best thing you could do to understand what this trilogy is really about would be to watch the video: The Matrix Trilogy Decoded, bj Mark Passio. Or even react to it, you would be the first ohne! The audio is bad but the information conveyed is extremely powerful! Best wishes from Central Europe.
The first two sequels are fine. In fact I like them a lot more now than I did when they came out, especially this one. I recommend not watching the fourth movie.
I feel like, it happens every time the Wachowski's come up... I say the same thing. And at the risk of sounding like a broken record......... You should watch Sense8 XD

"No, Dawg, I'm just doing the Robot, here. You should try it."
"No."
"Oh, come on, Neo, get in there!"
"What if I can't? What happens if I fail?"
"Lighten up, it's JUST the Robot."
"No. I can't.
Love you and your reactions and observations - can't wait to see what you make of the next part! 🖤
32:15 I think he was referring to other cities with the same characteristics.....ok maybe I could be wrong
36:06 my personal theory: there were 5 different "Neos" in other cities, wiped out and re-done again until reaching the "Neo" we know, since in the previous movie said Zion is the last human city, the machines lied to the humans so they could fight and lose.....I think I prefer to ask to the Wachowsky
I really love the 2nd movie as it’s one that knows how to really build and lay the groundwork for a great 3rd movie lol
technically these last two movies are one big one. the creators are from my same hood and grew up watching all the same anime and kung fu movies from the 90s and 90s so the fact other people like these movies is wild to me. we had all the action figures for these movies and art books, some of our favorite artist made stuff for these movies and weta legends, so many legends.
I'm so curious what you'll have to say about The Animatrix and Resurrections, because they're both so different from the trilogy (and controversially so in the latter case, even though it's entirely by design).
33:41 yes
Fun fact: the dreadlocked albino weirdos are played by twins most known in the UK for being handymen on a long-running home makeover show (Better Homes?). This will never stop being funny to me.
When it comes to the Matrix movies we all must think Will Smith for making them so great
The animatrix is the best piece of supplementary content released before reloaded that I don't wanna spoil and the enter the matrix game shows what niobe(Jada pinkett Smith's character) was doing during certain sequence in this movie.
Hi Meg hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Highly recommend watching The Animatrix before The Matrix Revolutions!
The matrix needs to be Seen as a. Trilogy… don’t listen to the haters ……Only iffy one was the fourth one
There's a TH-cam channel called Matrix Explained which has been picking apart all the movies, games, etc. in this franchise for years. But all their videos are full of spoilers, so watch all the movies and other stuff first if you don't want them spoilt.
Smith took over Bane’s body and transferred to the real world through the phone 📞 - Watch that scene again.
Matrix Reloaded is a really great sequel and have a very merry Christmas Meg and Caleb thank you.🎄🐕🎄
That was a good time, keep going
the kid brought Neo a spoon from the kid potentials now out of the matrix from the first movie that showed Neo the spoon bending
Meg after u finish the animated series of batman and superman will u watch justice league and batman beyond?
I may not be a huge fan of this movie overall but that chateau fight and the highway scene are pure art. Some of the best action in Hollywood
i feel like the Sister's story is best represented with matrix 4. it is my favorite entry and shoots the francise to favorite all time
Love the spirit never dies.
17:03 Lmao, memory of a goldfish 😛
21:55 I love a comment I saw on a video of this scene:
"'Warner Brothers, I assure you, cuckolding Trinity is essential to the plot.'"
32:07 Hon, there are Sentinels on their way to destroy Zion at that moment, in the real world. That's basically the whole conflict of the movie 😂
38:34 Yes. Earlier in the movie you saw Smith take over Bane's body before leaving The Matrix.
The counsel man is the one🤣
"glass motif" okay yeah. you might be on to something
Believing that one is incapable of being prejudiced is a form of self-propaganda too. 😴
You may want to react to the Persephone scenes from the Enter the Matrix video games with Ghost and Niobe.
Meg, watch Keanu Reeves again in Point Break & John Wick series 👌.
The first two sequels are fine. In fact I like them a lot more now than I did when they came out, especially this one. I recommend not watching the fourth movie.
Meg just dropped the newest theory
why nobody reacts to the Animatrix ? :(
Check Animatrix next. It's a great addition to this stuff)))
THANK YOU for reacting to the rest of the trilogy! Can't stand when throngs of haters convince people not to see the other two amazing films. ♥
Also to add, the freeway for the movie was entirely built for the movie. XD
The keymaker is doctor in J🎉ohn wick
"I don't like being watched or observed"
*Posts reaction videos*
😅
Does Meg not know Bane is really...ah never mind😅
You are half Polish? Greatings from Poland for you 🤗
hi MegMage
Please could you react to 101 Dalmations the live action one in 1996, that is a classic!
YAY FINALLY!!
WE are observing you, Meg.
This is the only movie I saw in theaters more than once.
I absolutely love the sequels! All of them!
Besides V for Vendetta and Cloud Atlas this is the last decent movie the Wachowskis made. Most of the rest of their work has been hot garbage.
I feel like, it happens every time the Wachowski's come up... I say the same thing. And at the risk of sounding like a broken record......... You should watch Sense8 XD
Love the Wachowskis! You’d love their tv series Sense8
