This is one of the best TV shows in television history in my opinion. Up there with The Wire and The Sopranos. However, be warned many people who would love the show give up on it after a couple of episodes due to the amount of world building the show needs to do to subvert peoples expectations of a 'scifi' show (i.e. no artificial gravity, no warp drive etc). If people get through the first four episodes as the various story threads start to come together, they never look back

This is smart Sci-Fi for smart adults. It doesn't hold your hand and almost everthing said is important so pay attention. The 1st season is full of dense world building. It's closely based on a fantastic series of books. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you did not choose to follow it all of the way through.

I'll echo what someone else said. You're pretty much the perfect reactor for a show like this. Aside from the story and characters, you're into the world building and you're into the science and realism that went into building it. Many people miss out on details like the bird flap in low G, or the arcing water pour or the belter on hooks struggling to breathe (though that one is pretty much narrated to you). Physics is just another character on this show, and it contributes immensely to the world building, enough that you might find yourself replaying space scenes just to see the realism of them
I hope you pick this up!

This is hands down one of the best shows going & I really hope you continue with it.
A couple tips that really helped when I started watching it - turning on the subtitles helps you catch a lot of the subtle extra info they put in nearly ever scene. Keep an eye on the screens in the background also for the same reasons. The Belter language is a mix of many different earth languages.
As you’ve noticed, this show doesn’t spoon feed its story to its viewers, It lets you piece it together. It’s of the best written shows I’ve seen & It gets better almost every episode. This is science fiction for grown ups. If you are confused, it's because the authors are revealing things slowly, so you discover things at about the same pace as the protagonists do. Most characters are working with imperfect knowledge, and it makes for some interesting conflicts where all sides are acting rationally, given their point of view.
This is one of my personal favourite series of all time, highly recommended.

The Expense and German show “Dark” has got to be the best Sci-fi show in our generation. They’re not just “good shows”…but feel human. Both shows encompasses the full spectrum of the human condition… it is also scientifically correct. There are a few mistakes but they pale in the grand schemes of things. Also, the acting (Specifically in DARK) is off the roof.

Time travel is completely permitted by Einstein's general relativity. How have you not heard of closed timeline curves? Those are extremely well known and you seem to be trying to give the impression your read up on this stuff.
You've got a somewhat fair critique, but you're forgetting a number of presuppositions you've made. Namely you're assuming some kind of multiple timeline variation, many worlds or perhaps some nonsensical non consistent variation of time travel where the time is linear and yet affects itself non linearly. Instead take a deterministic and self consistent approach. As seen in the Novikov self consistency principle, another extremely famous solution to time travel. From there you will find that the laws of thermodynamics are not violated.

If it hasn't been noted yet, one of the things that really allows The Expanse to shine is that it is based upon a series of books, and the authors work as writers on the TV Series. So the plotting is tight, the characters are consistent, and the foreshadowing is out of this world. Watch the computer screens and news feeds in the background. There are already Easter eggs showing up in the background that won't be paid off for 5 seasons from now. I don't know of any other show that's really had the luxury of doing that.
"Dulcinea" is the love interest in "Don Quixote." Watch for "Don Quixote" references all through the season.
I hope you will take up The Expanse for regular reaction. It is a brilliant show that rewards the careful viewer.

You should definitely do this show. It's one of the best TV shows to come out in recent years and pretty much at the top of sci-fi lists. The show does not hold your hand, you will need to pay attention and you will have more questions than answers until those answers are explained and a new set of questions arise. There are a few minor fantastical sci-fi elements but the vast majority of the show is scientifically realistic and so there will be some confusion as you'll need to mind-purge typical sci-fi tropes.
The language you heard was built for the universe, sort of like the game of thrones languages, and is basically a creole of dozens of languages with the idea of what would happen if people from different backgrounds and languages mixed on tiny isolated asteroid bases with no 'state' to enforce a particular language then combined with hundreds of years of development away from Earth-centric ideas. Generally the translation of the words isn't subtitled you just pick it up through context clues.
I will say that you'll need good mods or to avoid comments because the expanse community while generally pretty good can sometimes get... overexcited and overshare to the point of spoilers.

Super excited to watch this show with you! Quick note: Most ships are built like towers and use acceleration to cause (thrust) gravity as the floor pushes under your feet. Ships typically accelerating at a steady 1/3 G and then half-way to destination, ships do a 'flip and burn', spinning 180 degrees and then decelerating at 1/3 G to for the remainder of the trip to maintain gravity. You'll notice sometimes ships appear to be flying backwards, but that is just them decelerating on the second half of their trip. When a ship stops accelerating, you'll see they return to zero G and use magnetic boots to stick to the floor.

teh belter language is a creole mash up of several languages. the belt itself has several different dialects, that are based off their earth original language sourcing. liek knowing common phrases for trade, and adapting your language to the trade creole. the show will mostly depict the "Ceres" dialect. The creole mashup comprises elements from English, Mandarin, Romance languages like French, Italian and Portugese, slavic language like Polish or russian, and some others like Zulu, arabic, niger-congo, & persian.
the speaking patterns vary too, some borrow speach patterns and gramatical structure such as tones from mandarin, or applying gender to objects like romance languages, which give the variations to the belter dialects.
each dialect may have some words that another dialect may not understand, based off of their earthly language back ground, but the general message is understood throughout. hence the "trade creole" language. kind of like how Americans say "elevator", but brits say "Lift" or americans say "eggplant" but brits say "aubergine". wtf is an aubergine? was the first thing i said when i met a brit at the grocery store looking for eggplant. he just said you know...the "dick emoji", i want to buy that vegetable

I've been paying close attention to TV science fiction since "Men into Space" 1959 and The Expanse's first three seasons were everything I ever wanted. I fully believe that this was made by people who read the same battle sci-fi adventures I read as a kid.

This is a fantastic show and some of the best sifi I've seen on TV in a long time! Your pilot week is a solid line up but this and Black sails look like the must haves to me, stranger things is great and current and then I think Sunny and Futurama are stone cold classics for sitcoms. Good luck making your decisions!

"Sci-fi isn't a genre, so much as a storytelling device."
My god, thank you. You're one of the only people I've ever heard get this simple fact. Science fiction is just an approach to worldbuilding that serves as almost a container for any actual genre - fantasy (SW), noir (Blade Runner), horror (Alien), romance (Her), even wacky comedies like Mars Attacks. The Expanse is a political drama, inside the worldbuilding approach of "what will humanity be like when it is able to colonise the solar system?"
So happy to see you pick up on a lot of the information and subtleties packed into this pilot. It sounds like you're already on board (you seem like nearly the perfect reactor for a show like The Expanse), so if you do decide to go forward, I'd like to suggest pausing on occasion for commentary, as the show (and especially the first season) is so densely packed with information it can be very easy to miss things. Also, the show is definitely cause for a lot of speculation and analysis, so pausing will let you go on at length as to your thoughts. Hope to see you join the Expanse fan community!

The simple rule for determining whether (or not) something is science fiction is to ask: if we remove the "science" element from the story, will it change the story you tell? Defiance and Firefly were Westerns, with science fiction tropes; Star Wars was fantasy; etc.

Great reaction and glad you enjoyed the Pilot, the show itself is a real masterpiece.
The world they build is realistic, and every character multilayered.
Every action is understandable and it's up to you if you think it's justifiable or not.
Few, if any, scenes are wasted, and because it's an adaptation, there is a lot of great set up and payoffs.
I hope you continue the journey so I can relive it vicariously through your reactions.

The show has a fairly slow start, but when it kicks in, you get two and a half seasons of mind blowing reveals and constantly ratcheting tension to a level that is barely believable. And the final three seasons are brilliant too. Just a slightly different beast.

You're so right, brilliant world building. Heard some astronaut or space nerd once say where we are in space exploration is comparable to when we were rowing a coracle around the coast of the island we live on - and The Expanse gives that feel humans are just starting out on a suddenly enormous trip with limitless potential directions and no effing idea what might be out there in the oceans.

    Subbed for the Expanse!
Minor correction of the opening text; it is the mid-24th-century (~2340). That text error drives me nuts every time.
Quick run-down of character names, since this show is ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ on the one time (or no times) they state a character’s name. Here’s a partial list of who you’ve spent time with thus far:
Julie Mao: the woman that’s gone missing. Miller is looking for her.
Joe Miller: Detective on Ceres station. He’s a Belter working for an earth-based security corporation.
Dimitri Havlock: Miller’s rookie partner. He’s an Earther.
Captain Shadid: Miller’s boss at Star Helix security corp.
Octavia “Tavi” Muss: Female coworker of Miller’s.
James Holden: newly promoted executive officer (XO) of the Canterbury.
Naomi Nagata: the Canterbury’s chief engineer.
Amos Burton: a mechanic on the Cant.
Alex Kamal: a pilot on the Canterbury.
    Shed Garvey: the Canterbury’s medic.
Chrisjen Avasarala: the Deputy Undersecretary of the United Nations. She’s basically the third-highest person in charge on Earth.
You haven’t met Chrisjen’s boss yet, but in the second episode you’ll meet Sadavir Errinwright, the Undersecretary of the UN.
Most all large-scale place names they refer to are stations built on actual moons and asteroids in our solar system; Ceres is a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt, for example. If you hear a Greek or Roman-sounding name, and don’t know what it is, you can safely google “[blank] solar system” and get real-world info about the celestial body from google’s top search results. Ceres solar system, Luna solar system, etc. Similarly, having a clear mental image of the major layout of the solar system will help, too.
I hope you stick with it! One of the absolute best shows on television.

I'll stop blowing up your comments, but I just wanted to add several reasons why you might enjoy this show: 1. Excellent characters and casting. You just met several amazing characters. Many more to come. 2. Great character development. 3. Lots of nuance. Lots of morally grey areas to discuss. 4. Great social commentary. 5. The authors of The Expanse books are heavily involved in the entire series, therefore it wasn't taken in a wildly different direction. 6. The authors did a ton of research into what the realities of this type of life in space might look like, so that's why it feels real. You will continue to get a reality feel as opposed to a fantastical view. 7. You will never lack for content to react to both due to the excitement of the show, lots of reveals, and also plenty of topics for you to navigate. 8. Also, as a woman, I think this show really allows women to shine in so many diverse ways. No show is perfect, but I really respect that way female characters are utilized in this show.
