    This video popped up on my feed probably by the divine intervention 😂. I have a Tv that’s been sitting on my dresser for almost a year, from a power surge. I called for repair and was told $250.. I wasn’t sure I wanted to pay that much to repair my tv. Coming across this video, plus actually doing some searches on the topic, this video is by far the best video I’ve come across. I ordered the Multimeter, so we’ll see how it goes when it comes in. Thanks to your video, I believe I can fix the Tv myself! I’m definitely going to try.

      @@mrswiss Potentially, if you're equipped to do surface mount soldering. That's beyond the skill level of myself and most people though, not to mention needing a nice enough soldering iron and de-soldering iron to pull it off cleanly. Cheaper to pay the money for a whole new board, especially considering the time spent in labor.

I had never dreamed of being able to do the replacement myself but with this video I was able to do it, and the new master board for my 86" TV was only $29.99 plus tax, including shipping. 5:55 thank you!! Can’t wait to go home and try this. My TV was plugged into a surge protector along with several other items including my cable box. My cable box was connected to the TV via HDMI and it’s only my TV and cable box that got damaged. All other items on the surge protector are okay. When I called the cable company to replace the cable box, they cam and simply bypass the HDMI out port on the cable box and used a port (don’t know the name) but the wire that was use to connect to my next tv had a 3.5mm jack end into the cable box and some red and white and yellow ends that went into the TV, RCA I believe…
    So the cable box power source seemed to not have been hit only the HDMI cause light was coming from the cable box just no display. The light that normally come on my TV when plugged in doesn’t so maybe it’s my power board and also the main board.. either way I’m excited to go home and try this myself! :) thank you for this wonderful video!!

    I had two tv's hit (along with two DirectTV boxes). On the first tv I checked the fuse, howevere I don't have the same type of multimeter you have. I went to ohms and checked, without power, it showed no resistance. I then connected the power cord and checked the standby voltage. The board indicated 5v on standby but I registered 3 and then 4 volts. I assume this means the power board in working. What are your thoughts? I don't want to buy a new main board until I get some more information. Also, there was no obvious burning or scorching on the main board.

    Good afternoon. My sharp LC-60E69U does not power up. But I do have the 5VDC standby voltage present (but no other power supply output voltages). The standby Red LED is on too. The TV does not power up. Do u think it's the main board not giving a signal to the power supply to turn on the 12VDC, 24VDC, and other outputs? Of course the power supply fuse is good too. I have both replacement boards. Should I replace both first or just the main board first? I don't want an old board to damage a new board. Thnx

    Great video, and thank you! I have an issue with my 70” JVC LCD 4K TV, and would like your (and anyone else’s) opinion.
    The TV has been rock solid since it was delivered in 2019, up to now. It’s been used an average of a couple hours a day since. I was watching a movie a couple weeks ago, and the screen dimmed, then went black, with the movie and it’s audio still kicking along fine. I turned it off, unplugged it for a few mins, then plugged it back in. The red IR remote receiver light came normally, and I hit the “power” button on the remote. And yes, I am aware this is only a “stand by/sleep” button, and doesn’t fully power the unit down while plugged in.
    TV turns on, screen illuminates, and it seems to be working fine again. I walk over (it’s wall mounted), and place my ear as close to the bottom of the TV as possible. Now I can barely discern a faint, slight buzzing emanating from inside the TV. No burning smell, though. I sit down, go back to my movie, and 10 mins later, same failure, screen goes black, with audio continuing.
    So I repeat the unplugging, holding the power button down, doing the remote code thing, etc., from all the FIX YOUR JVC TV videos on TH-cam. No luck. I wasn’t really surprised. Now this TV’s AC power has not been run through a true anti-spike strip (just a regular power strip), or any other power conditioner type device. So I’m suspecting the power board. I grab my Kill-A-Watt meter, and plug it in to the receptacle the TV was plugged into. Both outlets on that receptacle are showing 121V @ 60Hz. Normal. So I then plug the TVs cord into the Kill-A-Watt, and the voltage reading drops to 89V, then 112, then 119, back to down to 110, and so on. It’s basically all over the road. Same thing happens on the lower outlet. I unplug the TV.
    I pull off the back panel, and there up on the top right side of the board (cold side), a single capacitor next to the dual LED wiring connectors is “domed” on it’s top, with obvious signs it’s spewed out a bit of some black dusty by product of whatever over heated goo is inside of it. Not good at all...
    So in your experience, have you ever seen a TV with a failure on the power board like this continue to work for a few minutes at a time, before failure?
    And if so, what do you think the likelihood of this failure type damaging the main board is? Or any other component? Specifically the power button module, and/or T-Con board. And any idea what is happening with the voltage reading at the power receptacle? It seems like the board is “back feeding” shorted power out of the board directly into the cord.
    Anyway, thanks very much for your time, and attention to this novel of a post, and for any reply! PS I have the board out on my bench, and arrived here in search of videos on how to bench test a live (powered) board out of a TV.

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! That doesn't sound like a voltage you would see on that power board so that is a good guess that it is bad. Are you sure you have your black probe on the metal chassis and red on the 5v pin when you are taking the DC voltage reading? Just checking that you are measuring the correct electrical potential.

    Great video! This is the first time I heard the explanation about the surge coming through the HDMI. I pretty sure that happened to me as our 60in Samsung was in a surge protector, but one connected device was not. I get no standby light at all and ran through your troubleshooting. Fuse is good. Finding that if I disconnect the power and main board connection and then connect power, I get backlights. But once I reconnect the two together, nothing. So this tells me it must be the main board? Though I can find not burn marks or puffy caps or anything that looks bad. Should I just replace the main board since power is getting to the power board?

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Usually, you need the main board to tell the power supply to turn on the backlights. That is curious that they are coming on without the main board attached. You may need to take measurements with your multimeter to see if the standard voltages are there. Or if they fluctuate.

    • @FourthRiverJoint
      @FourthRiverJoint 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FrugalRepair Thanks for the reply. The pinout on the power supply has 13V for 4 pins. If I keep everything connected (main to power supply) and plug in the TV, I only get ~10V (just under) on each pin and no backlights. If I disconnect the main board from the power supply board and retest I get the full ~13V on each pin. What do you think of that? Also standby light never comes on and remote or manual power does nothing.

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’d make sure to check what is printed on the circuit board. It usually tells you what each pin’s voltage should be. As for what you mentioned, I’m not sure. You can test to see if there is voltage going to your input bar (where the on/off button is), this will give you more clues. That is a standby voltage going there.

    I'm reading that quite a few people had their TV's plugged into a surge protector and that the power surge still caused damage. I live in Mexico where power comes on and off frequently. Had thought about getting a power surge protector but didn't get around to it and about a half hour ago my TV just zapped out, followed by a strong smell of electricity burning in the air and no standby light...I'm assuming from a power surge. Do you think power surge protectors work, and if so, do you have any recommendations on a good brand?

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any recommendations but it sounds like having a good one would be a wise decision. Beside the main power cord, the power surge can come through another device connected to the tv (ex; hdmi), like it did in the tv in the video. I'm sorry to hear your tv broke. Hi I have a question....
    I Have a Vizio e500ar. We had a lightning storm and a big strike happened near our house. After that the the tv stopped working. It won’t cut on and doesn’t have any lights. It was plugged in the power strip, but the other things on the power strip were still working and so is the power strip itself. The tv was connected to both the antenna and satellite dish. We have another tv connected to the antenna and it is working fine and we have another connected to the dish and it’s fine. We were even able to connect the dish Box to a new tv we had in the shed. It at first didn’t work, but we then realized that the hdmi cord from the dish box to the tv was no longer working. We got the av cords from the Joey in the other room and connected it to the tv since we didn’t have another hdmi cord. It’s now working with the new tv but the old tv still won’t cut on. Any tips?

    Soooo, if the fuse is blown, should I just change the fuse or change the whole power board ? And if I just change the fuse are they a pull our or a solder hook up ? This is a great video got hit by lightning 2 days ago, no power, no standby light. Haven’t pulled it off the wall to look yet, it’s 75 ‘’ RCA and is 130 pounds and I’m 80 years old so I don’t want to take it to a shop, that’s a major job. Thanks again for your video . EJ

    Thank you for putting out a great Video!! Recently a lightning strike fried my router, modem, Roku and firestick. My TV powers up, and stays on Standby. (OPC is on) and I am able to see menu options. But Roku, Firestick and other HDMI video players do not display any pictures. I tested all HDMI ports. Confirmed that the HDMI cable and the new streaming players are working fine by testing them on my computer monitor. What board should I check/change ( and a good place to buy it).? My Sony Bravia standby light works but it only stays on for a few minutes.
    The longer I leave it unplugged, the longer it stays on. But it eventually turns off in a few minutes. And I did check to make sure the timer was off that turns it off after a certain period of time.
    My guess is that something is okay while cool, when it gets heated up, it turns off. Just what would that be then, a fuse? And in which part the Power or the Main board?

When i plug in to the wall outlet, the tv has a stanby light. When i power on, its like normal. The LED light turns from red to white, but theres no display on the TV. So its definitely the main board right? Could it be the Tcon too? Also i havent taking apart the tv yet, maybe if i got time. I hope you answer my question :D thank you sir. (Sorry for bad english)

    • @FrugalRepair

      It could be any of the parts inside. It could be bad capacitors on the power board. It could be messed up firmware chip on the main board. It could also be a bad backlight. For a bad backlight diagnosis, turn the tv on and shine a flashlight on the screen. If you see anything then its a bad backlight. You would need to get more information to diagnose it further. Also, physically look at the boards for any burn damage.

    Well, this tv I recovered from someone who isn't as inclined as I am and they set it out on the curb. It's a beautiful Samsung 55", that was well cared for, and looks less than 2-3 years old. I noticed a 2 pole plug, not like my Sharp's polarized plug. But, I remember that our Utility Provider had shut down for "Scheduled Maintenance" a few weeks back. I'm assuming it wasn't plugged into a surge protected power strip (all of my electronics use them), and when their power was restored their TV was not turning on. I am a Journeyman Industrial Master Mechanic, and if needed, I know I can fix a Military Tank 😊😁😎
    This will become a monitor for a Dell Inspiron sff tower that I also recovered that someone discarded... I cleaned out the Roaches, and a minor spill, and am upgrading it for my purposes 😊😉😁😎

The red/blue LED on the TV comes on and stays on but there's no picture on the screen. I have found that the TV uses a TP.S512.PB83 board that is found on dozens of other TVs, such as Supra, Haier, and Baird. Question is, would a mainboard from any of these TVs work? Cheers.

      Thanks for your comment! You are correct that some main boards are identical to ones used on different models. If you make sure the board numbers are the same and you visually inspect it (to make sure the connections are the same, etc) then I think you should be fine. At least, that is what I do. When searching for a replacement board on ebay, I'll do at least two searches, one for the model number and one with the board number.

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear! If you are certain that the power surge came through the lan cable then most likely you probably have a component(s) damaged on the main board. You can also search the main board for any visible burn marks for clues to where the problem lies.

      Sorry to hear! The light in the front of the TV is called the standby light. Check the fuse on the main power supply (unplug the tv and take the rear plastic back off ) as a first step. Watch the video and let me know if you have more questions. There isn't a reset button, unfortunately. But if you have a multimeter and a screwdriver you can fix the tv yourself. The problem is either on the power supply board or there is a short circuit on the main board (which was the issue on the tv in this video).

My TV (Samsung UN40FH6030) is turning on, however the screen is VERY VERY dim. The controls seem to work as well. I checked everything in this video but none of it seems to be the issue. • @FrugalRepair

      The dim screen is the backlight. did you try going into the settings and increasing the backlight (ie screen brightness) on the tv? let me know. if all of the functions of the tv are there (except for the dim screen) then your problem is probably not the main board. It could be the led's (backlight) themselves, the power board (which supplies the power to the led strip), or some TV"s have a separate led driver board.

    I lost one tv and the attached satellite TV receiver two months back and now another Tv (both old tube type) along with their separate satellite TV receiver. Both connected to the same dish having a dual output C-Band LNB (so actually two separate LNBs inside as both have separate polarity adjustments). Both TVs were also connected to the same Cable Tv system using a splitter.
    The technician said both TVs had the Audio/Video in/out sections burnt. One of the Sattelite Receivers also had audio/video "Out" sections burnt, the other receiver powers on (Displays ON) but does not boot ( this receiver has no burn signs and perhaps the software got corrupted).The technician suspected surge from Dish but the RF tuner sections of both receivers are not burnt.
    Both TVs sparked at the power plug in the wall socket when switched ON and died.No power up light whatsoever. The first TV showed full continuity at the power plug but the second TV showed an open circuit at the power plug.
    I checked the voltage on the Coaxial Cable (RF cableTV) and on setting my meter to DC it gave 0.7 to 1.6 volts (shows -ve when I switch cables so its perhaps a DC voltage) and when I set the voltmeter to AC it read 11.4 volts. Now I have a new LED TV and dread the cable could do harm. The technician says 1.6 volts DCis OK as the cable booster can add that (I doubt).
    Please help me diagnose the cause as I don't want to lose my new TV. I have pics of the burnt receiver board if someone wants to see.

If I remember correctly, channels 14 and up are UHF channels and use a different frequency than the lower channels (VHF). There may be a damaged component that helps decode that signal on your main board. Do the HDMI ports work? If so, you can get a coax to hdmi box and run your cable through that. I think they are like $15-20.

      @@FrugalRepair Thanks much. Excellent video btw. Her refrigerator is one of those big expensive side by side with the big chest drawer freezer below. The digital board where you adjust everything is lit up but like when a digital clock goes bad, whole numbers don't read, parts of what you see are missing AND when you try to change anything, you can bump it up or down but it doesn't respond to the command. The 'enter' command doesn't work. A friend is in a gospel quartet and one of his members does appliances and says it has two boards and the one showing , if it looks funky , could be the culprit OR both could. He'll check it for nothing but it's WAY out on the mtn and takes an hour and a half trip to get there. In a situation like this, even costing me $150 + to get it to him and back, would throwing a board in it be advised, especially when you see it reading funky or should I bite the bullet and take it to him? I appreciate your time. It's expensive as hell and a only couple of years old, maybe ...3? I picked up a cherry black mid 90s side by side at an estate sale for $75 cash to get her by. She has lupus and didn't even know it got hit until she recovered from an attack and opened it up 3 days later. Woe! It'd knock ya down. I had more in getting it out there than I gave for it. Lol. I pay a friend to do it btw. Truck poor right now.
