    My biggest take away from this is that I already knew that the PS1 can push a lot more polygons than the 3DO but what I never thought about was that the resolution of the 3DO was higher which helps a lot to make it's games look prettier even though it lacks polygon power. I could never put my finger on why I thought 3DO games looked so unique like this weird photo-realism to them.

    I remember playing road rash on the 3do as a kid at costco. I wanted one so bad. I couldn't understand why my dad wouldnt buy me one. In hindsight $699 us was ludicrous in 1993 if they wanted to sell those things.

      The actual cost of living is harder now that it was in the 90's. The middle class is becoming one with the lower class. What was affordable for some might now be affordable for almost none, even "adjusted" for inflation. I've seen things become 600% more expensive over the past three years, while my wage actually decreased.

      @@HiNRGboy Probably because you're no longer technically middle class. There are three classes to middle class. Lower middle class, middle class and Upper middle class.

      $89,745-149,131 UMC 60-80th percentile
      $149,132+ UC top 20% earners.
      And let's not even talk about the 135.5% inflation from 1990-2023. Most middle class make the same amount basically but their earnings purchases half of what it did in the 90s. Everyone needs to seriously rethink their jobs and who they work for, because they're robbing you.
      Those that are right now MC are technically LC based on the current inflation.

      @@mormacfey I don't know how they are calculating inflation, but I can tell you that it is not correct. Let's look at average things that people require. Getting rid of trash. It's up by 600% in my town over the past 3 years. 87 gasoline is up 140% over the past 3 years, and that has been slowly dropping. Same with diesel, it comes down to 150%. Food: I used to fill a carriage for the cost of $100. Now it's about $350. How about the cost of a used vehicle? Cheap ones are no longer $600. They are $3000. My motorcycle tripled in value. It's almost worth the same price it was new. Too bad it's my most reliable vehicle, and I couldn't replace it later. What's going on with rent? We are being squeezed while our wages are going down. My last job literally gave me a demotion, because corona? They provided no excuse, while making the most amount of money they ever have.

    The 3DO couldn't render anything at 640x480. It had 320x240 and 320x480 modes and a very primitive upscaling chip outputted a blurry "interpolated" 640x480 that wasn't much more than a bilinear filter. Virtually all games use the lower 320x240 mode.
    The PSX certainly wasn't limited to 320x240 either. It has true native 512x240 and 640x240p/480i graphics modes. Many games switch to hi-res mode for title screens or UI and some games run in hi-res such as Crash Bandicoot (512) and Wipeout 3 (640), both of which run rings around the 3DO.

    • @mormacfey
      @mormacfey 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      and yet 1024x768 resolution was a standard in 1990. 640x480 was so 1987 not 1994. Consoles always holding things back.

    • @benjidubs826
      @benjidubs826 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      A bit revisionist there and unfair to consoles/gaming. Beyond the realities of consoles outputting to standard definition interlaced TV, sure, over in the PC space, EGA/VGA had featured high-res modes since the late 80s, and 800x600 and 1024x768 SVGA resolutions existed for productivity and CAD work...but gaming was still predominantly 320x200 until the mid 90s. And 1024x768 in the early 90s often meant a headache-inducing 42i CRT refresh with single-digit fps.
      Sure you had your hi-res 640x480 SVGA outliers by 93-94, particularly CD-ROM titles like The 7th Guest and Myst and Wing Commander 3, but certainly PC gaming in 320x200 was the norm when the 3DO and PSX came out, look at the big 94-95 games like Descent, Doom 1+2, Dark Forces and Command and Conquer.
      And while WC3 on PC was higher res, the 3DO could eg. boast 16-bit colour rather than 8-bit.
      Even once Quake hit in 96, 3D accelerators like the Voodoo 1 and Rendition Verite were 640x480 cards, the first 3D cards capable of even 800x600 (3dfx Voodoo 2, NVIDIA RIVA 128) didn't really launch until late 97-early 98.
      1024 PC gaming just barely made the tail end of the 90s, not the beginning of it and consoles, even the 3DO but certainly the PSX, punched well above their weight for their price until then.

If the price was more reasonable and they had 3rd parties like that on board, they may have actually dominated that generation despite being the weakest console overall. Though both can also do the same 320x240 (or the PAL equivalent) resolution. I do wish this was more clearly mentioned as just saying 640x480 without mentioning interlacing can make one in the know assume you mean progressive scan. Also while a forgotten controller today there was the Dual Analog Controller released a few months before the original DualShock making it the actual first to feature analog sticks as we know them today (there was also a flight controller but I was just thinking of standard controllers). That is all I do have though critique wise with my knowledge.

    I can understand where the 3DO bosses were coming from when it comes to their marketing (though I don’t agree with it). Nintendo had the kids market (and some teens) locked with the NES and SNES, Sega and Atari were targeting teens for the most part. So instead of marketing against them for those demographics they went for the adults. The price point I think was them figuring an adult would pay more for a multimedia console.
    What they didn’t see is that kids and teens were the largest demographic of perspective customers and adults already had their multimedia machine… computers.
    In the end the 3DO flopped. Sure it had some good games (SSF Turbo & Road Rash) but between the smaller catalogue, marketing to adults and the higher price tag it’s no wonder to see why the PSX wiped the floor with it.

      The price was pretty integral to the whole business strategy the thing was built on. There really wasn't any way it would have been affordable going with that model. Panasonic did buy the brand, so if the sequel system had come out, it probably would have been cheaper since Panasonic would have followed the traditional console business model.

    I love how people try and say marketing alone is why one system beat another out. The truth is that the Playsation simply was better in a number of ways. Most notably polygonal processing as we moved in to a 3d based state of gameplay. The two things that killed the 3DO were 1) price point and 2) lack of vendor support. I personally think SF2 Turbo and Road Rash are the best ports on my 3DO but that's not enough to make me say it "beats" the PSX. At any rate, it wasn't marketring that made the PSX win, it was the fact that it had a better ecosystem and price point as well as some forward thinking technologies whether in their infancy or not. It's a shame too because Trip's idea of allowing licensing of the technology for manufacturers to make the console was potentially brilliant. Oh, as a side note... that ridiculous daisy chaining of controllers... who ever thought that was a good idea? LOL

    Great video! I personally was in love with both and had both. Still do. You make the case for the 2 systems being closer than in reality, but I dont want to be negative to the 3DO for the sake of glorifying the PSX, but the Playstation just went godmode all over the Pannie. I have a soft spot for both as I was at that perfect age and place when both came out, in high school, and the 2 systems were there for me at a time when I was becoming an adult. I cherish the time I had with them so thanks for making such incredible videos about these systems.

Although I have a fascination with all failed consoles, none can match those 2 consoles in particular.

      I was thinking the same thing. I was around at that time and I never heard of a war between them; not even in the gaming mags did you hear about a war.
      The 3DO was highly expensive, it cost like maybe 200 dollars more than the ps1.
      There was a war (competitively) between Sony, Nintendo and Sega. Sony came out with the Playstation, Sega released the Saturn, and Nintendo with their 64 bit system.
      A few years after that, the Saturn was dying off, about the only ones making games for the Sega Saturn was sega, but the PS1 was going strong with lots of developers developing games for it
      And then all 3 released their new game systems; Sega beat them to the punch and released the Sega Dreamcast before the others in hopes of getting a larger market share, BUT shoppers avoided the Dreamcast like the plague, and waited patiently for the Playstation 2 to arrive. And so....the Sega Dreamcast died a quick death.
      And so there were 2 left --- the Nintendo GameCube and the Sony Playstation 2. A few years later, Microsoft saw an opportunity to get into the gaming business, and the rest is history.
      3DO? Nope, I had Playstation, my friend had a Nintendo 64, but no one had a 3DO or a Dreamcast 🤷

    When the PS1 was out, I didn't know anything about the 3DO, the main competition was N64, and people were still messing with SNES and Genesis, we knew about the Saturn, but that was kinda like the Neo Geo, we knew it was there, but overlooked them, one cause of the prices and the other for lack of promotion for its games, but 3DO we didn't know it existed.

I ended up getting N64 but I did lament that PS1 got loads of great games Nintendo didn't.

    Sony had a major competitive advantage over the other players due to the CD supply chain already being established. This cost reduction lead them to be able to allocate the savings to the developers making their library larger than Nintendo or 3DO or Sega. Sony is likely going to have their golden age in the next 10-20 years due to their library of games as well as their movie connections. Gaming is the new comic book films and they will likely be the driving force due to Twitch and other content interesting channels that exist. It will be interesting to see what happens with the consoles and console wars turn into the streaming wars. I think Nintendo's direction is smart. Sony has the library as well as the core base. But the key value is the data from these games and the teams that win have the best business intelligence to really decipher what gamers want to enjoy a game.

    • @mormacfey
      @mormacfey 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah but that advantage is over because now it's basically all digital downloads and even they buy that infrastructure from their competitors. The majority of their library is 3rd party not 1st party and they don't own it. From what I've seen the brand is souring. I'm not a fan boy of any system either. Even Nintendo gave Microsoft a price for their business years ago and MS has spent far more for a single developer than what they were asking. There is no telling how things will turn out.

The games ported to PS1, while technically superior (frame rates, usually), had certain key features dropped, which made them far less enjoyable. The unique games to the 3DO stand the test of time, and there's awesome titles and types of content released on 3DO that have never been released again in the same manner.

      Just because it was a lopsided war, with far more marketing budget on one side, doesn't mean it wasn't a console war to those who lived through the time and owned the machines.
      Sony also benefitted from very unfair trade laws and somehow skirted the laws against "dumping", even though they sold PS1 at a large loss in the US, but not at a loss (or much less of a loss) in Japan. The PS1 *should* have cost more than the 3DO to purchase.
