  • Here's a quick DIY project for you. We purchased the plans from Fuller Farms for this project. I have no affiliation with Fuller Farms. I just wanted to share my experience with the plans that I purchased and give an honest review. I was able to complete this in about 3 hours from start to finish. The build plans were extremely easy to follow. I'd highly recommend giving this shelter a shot if you have pigs that you are looking to rotate across pasture.

    I need this for my goats. I'd want to leave both sides open though, but I'm sure it would work just as well.I have a permanent shelter and I'm ready for a change. I still want a shelter to separate the bucks, for birthing, and for milking, but want to move to portable shelters like this. I just hope they'd be tough enough to withstand goats ripping them apart.

      I think you could easily adapt this to work for other livestock as you mentioned. That’s what I love about TH-cam. You can take an idea and say hey I could probably make this work for me and just change this one thing!

    You do need caps on the open skid ends. Water gets in during rain or snow, temps drop, water freezes and pipe splits. Also, untreated steel will rust where the water has settled inside of the uncapped pipe.

    • @michaelstrahl
      @michaelstrahl  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good looking out. I’ve actually got it sitting up against a round bale right now so the water doesn’t sit. I need to find some caps but they are hard to find for that size tube and the ones I purchased originally were pretty poor quality.

    • @easyworkacres
      @easyworkacres 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@michaelstrahl you could probably get som basic pvc pipe caps. Since the caps go over the pipe instead of inside the water should shed off easily. Even if they don’t fit over the pipe super snug you could throw a small screw in the side to keep em on.

      I appreciate the kind words my friend. One update I would consider is to beef up the hardware you use for the lower section of panel or place a support of some sort on the inside to prevent them from pushing on the panels. I’ve had a few of the screws break already and mangle up one section. It’s still a very good design. It just needs a little more strength is all

    Back in the Dark Ages (1970's) I visited England. Somewhere in a rural area I observed a very large pig pasture with thousands of perdectly aligned (likely laid out by a surveyor).pig shelters. For me it was shocking. The shelters were very strange to me, but there was also no visible mud. It appeared that they had trained the pigs to not make wallers.

    • @michaelstrahl
      @michaelstrahl  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Now you have me curious as what exactly you saw. I wonder if they were mobile or permanent shelters. I can’t imagine it’s possible to train a pig not to make a mud hole. It’s just their instinct but I could be wrong. I know some breeds of pigs are not near as destructive as others however. Either way I’m sure that was some sight to see back in the day. 😁

      The back side I feel is necessary. At least in my opinion. It’s a great wind block. The back is also fine. No damage there. The bottom panel on the sides are what took a beating the last month before we went to processor. My plan is to at a support bar on the inside so that they push against that instead of the metal paneling. I think that’ll solve my issue. Otherwise I really didn’t have any issues. I’m going to put a section of pipe inside about 12” up from the bottom rail on each side to keep them from pushing on the bottom section of metal paneling. Other than that it performed just like i needed it too. I’ll probably add a hook to hang the chain on as well.
