I had a girl come into my life around this time last year, show me your movie, make me fall madly in love with her and then leave all in the span of like two months, so I may be biased when I say your work is more impactful than it should be but I stand by that statement even so

I remember seeing a video where you talked about your production process for this piece, and during the space scenes all I could think about how the stars were just tiny holes on a black sheet of paper, which is kind of what I speculated stars to be when I was little.

i'm someone who had wanted to go into the animation industry in some form, for years, since i was a child. my entire life has been influenced by art, especially cartoons in my early childhood. animation can be such a powerful and beautiful medium for art and i feel like this film, and many of your other films, are cornerstones of that statement. it's pure beauty. it's art. even in the nonsense, the dialogue i cannot decipher no matter how many times i rewatch, or the little things i can't seem to understand, they still seem to mean something so deep, and that's something so incredible. something so raw, that a lot of artists don't usually get to see through or utilize.
i am only 15 years old. i'm not as well versed in your art as much others, and i (mostly) grew out of wanting to do animation as a career. i'm trying my best to pursue music primarily instead. i only really discovered your work semi-recently, about a year ago, from a friend's letterboxd review of it's such a beautiful day. looking at your work in retrospective has truly been an incredible experience. it's artists like you that have inspired me to push forward, so far forward with my art. it's artists like you that have pushed and motivated me to make hundreds of pieces of art, motivated me to have 6 albums released in the course of just over a year, motivated me to keep doing what i love and do best. so i just wanna say, in all of its cheesiness and overuse, yet all of its passion and meaning, thank you don

Within the last four months I have discovered Don for the first time, binged every single student and short film of his, many of them multiple times, watched the ISABD rerelease which was the best theater experience of my life, recommended him to my movie buff parents and letterboxd addict coworkers, received my ISABD shirt in the mail and brandished it every chance I get, read all his interviews, scoured through every nook and cranny of his website and found his old comic strips from when he was my age…and now I’m waiting for his book to arrive!
Two things: first, only a creative visionary genius could wrap me in and hypnotize me so easily. Second, after all this the I LIKE FISHSTICKS guy is still my favorite character of them all.

(Unrelated, but the way you were able to use all in-camera effects that were painstakingly photographed frame by frame to create such homey visions of the universe is humbling.
Having watched your making-of video and having read a good amount of all that you’ve put into the DVDs of your process, I marvel at your dedication and execution of your vision, Mr. Hertzfeldt.

Thank you Don, I'm sure I'll be back for more rewatches. I'm 17 and I wonder these things and look up at the stars, and there's never a certain answer, but I think the ability to ask and perceive is an answer in itself. To future evolutions, and to past evolutions, and to our present, how spectacular it is that we get to breathe it in now and express and wonder. Thank you.

    Hertzfeldt,
I’m in one of those rare instances where I cannot verbally describe how awfully powerful an art piece is. It’s like standing in front of a Rothko painting: a comically massive canvas completely covered with one or two solid colors. It’s so damn simple and unremarkable, any child with a paint bucket and a mop could make the same thing and hang it up in a museum. But standing in front of his art, genuinely taking it all in, seeing every single individual paint stroke, it floods your whole body with emotion, it’s freaking incredible. Rothko could’ve painted a beautiful landscape or some abstract painting with hidden deeper meanings that would’ve taken decades to uncover, but he chose to paint squares and rectangles of solid colors. And he did a pretty damn good job on the colors.
When I stumbled upon whatever the hell this was, I was genuinely crying at the end. I’d be at a loss for words if I tried to explain why that happened. I’ve gone through more emotions in 12 minutes than any other obscure 12 minute long section of my entire life. It’s 6 years of effort packed into a medium-length video, which in and of itself is unfathomably intense. But you’ve executed it with a simple art style, humans and simple creatures that any child with a pen and a piece of paper could recreate. But sitting down and watching it start to finish, you laugh at the absurdity, you feel the massive passage of time, and you can almost understand the ending dialogue. It’s indistinguishable from the feeling of life, this beautiful cacophony of controlled chaos, absurdity, and rollercoasters of emotions that everyone with a consciousness experiences.
Thank you for showing your meaning of life to us mere mortals.
