This is horrible, he just wanted to go down a slide and didn’t know what was going to happen. The family must be devastated. I’m sorry for their loss, R.I.P. Dallin
When I was in elementary school, we were not allowed on the playground during the winter. Until everything was melted. That includes the ground. I'm so sorry for the family's loss.
Was the same for my schools up in Canada. It should be a common sense rule to be enforced by all schools when freezing temperatures affect the playground areas. Play in the school yard instead, and if there's ice in any areas, they get cordoned off with traffic cones and a member of school staff watches to make sure kids don't test their luck and go there anyway. Completely avoidable accident.
When I was in middle school I slid off of a regular slide during wintertime and literally had the wind knocked out of me after flying off way further than expected and landing square on my back against the ledge of the playground area. I was paralyzed for about a minute and legitimately believed I’d broken something. To this day I feel as though I actually did because I have a lot of spine and back issues as of current day. I’m scared to go to a doctor and check. 😭
Exactly, you have to know to look out for the dangers of natural causes. The mulch would've regardless have broken the fall if not for the ice. What a waste of a slide, not even recycled.
The look on dad’s face reminds me of when I was a medic and we were called to a 3 year old that the dad accidentally ran over. He was cradling his son as we got there and his son went into cardiac arrest as I was intubating him. Never got him back. The tire ran over his head and it took 2 nurses to walk the dad in to see his dead son! I will never forget this day!
That is just too much to bear. Unimaginable to think about. The regret and guilt must be so heavy for the father. It must have also been hard for you as a medic, unable to bring the child back and watching the father mentally fall apart.
My grandfather almost ran over a kid the same way and it always haunted him, he'd almost never parked in a way where he'd have to back out after that and would always talk about how backing out is the most dangerous part of driving. It also made him more likely to follow rules as the only thing that saved the kids life was a company policy my grandpa had hated until then
I don't blame anyone for his death. It was pure accident. There's absolutely no way that every school will have their ground tested, especially during snow. I'm assuming that he ran and dove head first because that's the only way to fall off the rail for someone like his size. I've done that many times when I was a kid too. It was pure accident.
I don't know, if the ground was like hitting concrete, and the school was responsible for the maintenance of the ground for safety, then I think they might have a case. It wouldn't be that hard for schools in cold areas to run out and check the safety of the ground real quick. Like no effort. It wouldn't even need to be year-round,
@@JakeC-xx8zqIt's the middle of winter when it happened. The ground would have been frozen so even 12 inches of mulch wouldn't have made a difference. Even mulch freezes solid when its moist and then cold.
@@JakeC-xx8zqschools would have to replace the stuff almost every day or every month then, because we dug in the mulch and stuff, carried it around, made holes, so....ya
@@Ash_NuggTato I think you misunderstood what I said. I said just check it for safety, not replace it. Obviously replacing all of it monthly is an absurd notion.
I clicked this video thinking the same, but looking back, when I was in elementary school we didn't use the playground during the frozen months. We just went outside and milled around the pavement / snowbanks. 🤷
It’s the school’s responsibility to keep kids safe. If the playground wasn’t up to code, then yeah it was an accident, but it was an accident that could’ve been prevented, hence this issue
I feel much empathy for the parents. This seems more like a freak accident than anything. I was a boy in the early 1970s. They didn't have mulch under the slides, it was dirt. The monkey bars had concrete. We played like boys play. Once in a while you got scrapes, bruises, and the wind knocked out. There's no way to put pads on everything in a playground. My condolences.
Yeah a decade later for me. All the merry go rounds had a horror story. And kids often got hurt on the monkey bar dome thing. I don’t think a lawsuit is in order. Everyone knows what playground equipment is there. No one expected a freak accident like this. It would be like suing stairs. Anything involving height and gravity can potentially end you.
I was just about to mention that. As a Canadian growing up, we were always told never to play at the playground in the winter months even in the month of March, we were even told to be very careful as things may have not thawed out yet as well black ice. They always always close them sometimes even putting barriers in place so nobody could go near them
@@beccaboo147same! i’m from manitoba and i’ve never seen or heard of this! i grew up playing on structures in winter and i see kids all the time on the structure behind my house playing in the winter. not even saying it’s a bad idea because slippery surfaces and hard ground make a bad combination i’ve just never actually thought about it that much tbh
Yeah, I'm just below you guys in North Dakota and am totally baffled by the idea of closing the playground during the winter. That's most of the school year! I'm also remembering my years of us kids racing over ice-coated monkey bars, yikes!
So I know no one asked for this. But I knew Dallin He was a kind little boy, who loved to be with his family. He has three older sisters, his youngest sister (still older than him) her name was Margaret. I met her in third grade. We would play all the time. Especially with Dallin and Margaret. In fourth grade Margaret moved to Utah. Then in 2023, February 8th, we figured out that Dallin has died. We were so sad. RIP Dallin, you will be missed forever. You were a great little boy
Just given the report and pictures, it seems the ground was _frozen,_ so no amount of mulch would have provide protection, especially if it had rained or snowed recently.
@@miguelcastaneda7257 I guess you weren't listening to the story, they said how he landed. But I suppose that's the problem today, people don't listen.
This is just horrible :( When I was in elementary school, if it was too cold/snowy outside we could not go onto the equipment to prevent injury.. Sad knowing other schools don't follow this and this poor boy lost his life.
@@apothic0n It is dangerous but it shouldn't have cost him his life if the ground was not frozen. Also swings and slides onto concrete is very dangerous to play on
Tragic. I know rubberized material is often used but with the freezing temperatures don't know if it would have helped. Such a horrible thing for that family
I was thinking the same thing since these days it's common to use soft recycled rubber from tires and such in playground pavements. From what I could find, they shouldn't harden a lot in freezing temperatures. That would be a problem for tires anyway.
It was just a horrific set of circumstances..it does happen..I understand parents pain .but it's not something that can be directed at the school for blame ...he may have died regardless if ground was frozen or not 😢 and with it being cold ..your apt to slide much easier on a surface of plastic.. carried to much speed ..freak accidents do happen..I find it odd though because it's really not that high if he came off the first loop .then fell .?? Tottaly has to be with way he landed
@@karlfritz47It could very well be that he hit the ground the wrong way. They didn't confirm exactly what the injuries were. At any rate, the fact that they did not have the required amount of mulch on the playground is disturbing, those things should be inspected several times during the school year. Everybody that has ever tended a flower bed knows that mulch packs down as it lays, and it's especially going to do that when you have people running and jumping on it day in and day out.
Something is being omitted. The kid either went down the slide when it was iced over, went down head first foolishly, or the kid had some sort of preexisting condition that made a fall that wouldn't normally kill a kid kill him. Plenty of kids have fallen from the top of a jungle gym, and have been fine, which is why it's absurd to suggest liability for a kid who does from falling a few feet.
The part on the 911 call where they said "his whole body hit the ground at the same time and he didn't really catch himself" makes me think seizure or something similar.
@@KatherineXIX That could be it. Nevertheless, I don't think it's fair to sue the school. They used to put pebbles as the ground cover in playgrounds, and I don't think anyone ever got sued over that.
When I was a kid I fell from the top of a jungle gym, hit my chin on a bar on the way down and slammed into the ground, only got bleeding from my mouth and a big bump under my chin. It's so unfortunate that this boy didn't survive that fall, must have hit his head in a wrong angle.
I’m guessing because it was snowing outside, the slide was slippery and that he slid down the slide way too fast. Ice was probably on the slide. They did say the ground was “snowy,” and “rock hard” for a reason.
No- the frozen ground, & their failure to soften the fall by the required amount of mulch made it so dangerous. Like falling on bare concrete. Never should have happened.
This is so heartbreaking. A poor sweet child dying from such a simple accident. This just comes to show that families must stick together and appreciate each other like how this family loved their little boy, because it could only moments before someone close to you is gone.
It’s incredibly sad situation but why is the school responsible. Mulch freezes in the winter doesn’t matter how thick it is. This is a lawyer making money off of a grieving family and making them relive this tragic day over and over again
It's school equipment and responsibility. If the ground is that hard in the winter, the school should have known not to allow kids to play there until conditions were better suited to do so.
It's simply a grieving family looking for someone to blame for this terrible tragedy. To be clear, I don't judge them at all, I can completely understand the feeling of wanting justice after something like this happens.
There is no way that a lawsuit is fair. There is always some danger involved in a playground. I have been hurt many times. This death is just a tragedy and the school cannot be blamed for it.
100% they can. In frozen conditions either school should be canceled or outdoor recess should be canceled. In my elementary school in those conditions wed have indoor reccess where we would play cards, pokemon, board games, things like that.
This is what happens when poor design meets idiocy, or in this case, a child. And some other comments stated it coulda been anyone's child, therefore I think higher guard rails and deeper mulch is a very good case for a law suit and to help ensure it doesn't happen to anyone else
I went to that school at the time of the accident. I was coming from the bathroom back to my classroom and I saw one of the recess aids (the one who called 911) crying hysterically. When I got back to the classroom we heard the news that one of the students had fallen off of the slide and was in critical condition. I went down that slide so many times and never got injured. Kids would even shove each other down and no one ever got hurt. Even in the winter kids would slide down and fall on their butts this is just a freak accident I feel so bad for the parents. Dallin was a sweet kid, after he died the whole school did an assembly where we all wore green (his favorite color). RIP Dallin 💖🕊
I’m so sorry for this poor family’s loss. I hope other schools and towns learn from this story and make changes to their playgrounds. I’m glad this angel didn’t suffer
Everyone's first thought "Let's sue" What a terrible accident that I cannot imagine having to live through. Unfortunately this was just a terrible accident. Cue kids not being able to play outside in the winter while in school and remove all playground equipment while were at it. This is a terrible tragedy but just an accident.
People need to learn the difference, tripping over a pair of heels and falling down is an accident and putting on a pair of black tights is intentional.
The school allowed them to play outside in such cold weather where the ground hardened and was described to be like concrete. And they only put 1 inch of mulch when they were supposed to have a foot.
@@jjsstikbotvideos4421so then let's just keep all kids inside on computers without the danger of outdoors. But then parents would complain about that too. Sometimes freak accidents happen.
He didn’t know that would happen to him he was just enjoying him self it might’ve been a Monday which is 🤮 but he was still having fun not knowing what would happen
Our schools aren't allowed corkscrews. Also we have to close our playground once the temperature drops below a certain temperature and can't open it until Health & Safety comes around to make sure the ground is thawed enough. I always thought it was ridiculous, as a kid that grew up with tire swings and whatnot, but I guess it is to avoid getting sued when an accident happens.
That is ridiculous. This is what drives me nuts about lawsuits like this. Kids should be able to play on playground equipment when it is freezing - you just have to keep in mind that things might be icy and ground is going to be hard.
Freak accident? Nah the cop said the ground was Frozen and the way the teacher describes him "flying off" the slide indicates he was pushed not "accidental" anything
A frozen ground is an act of .. NATURE not an act of negligence. I have seen kids come shooting off of slides and they weren’t pushed just excited and wanting to go fast. Plenty of videos showing kids flying off slides right on YT. . It was an accident, a terrible accident, nothing more or less.
@@SigmaTruth351 The negligence is allowing kids to play on a playground that is covered in ice. They should of shut the playground down during the winter.
this is a freak accident. but to sue the school district over this? come on.... i'm sorry, but how is suing for money and depriving kids of playing outside going to solve anything. it is wintertime.
How did this kid fall off the slide? Why aren't we talking about the kid being at fault for his own actions? Why isn't the family suing the manufacturers of the slide for the fact that kids could apparently fly off of it at such velocity as to die? And, excuse me, this family is trying to sue the school district because the ground was cold and hard? Seriously!? Look, I'm sorry the kid died, I really am, but that lawsuit is STUPID!
Probably. Because why did the school let the children out to play if the floor was frozen and hard like they mentioned in the video🤔 who lets out kids outside in that weather
@@DidYouSAyMirage I don't think it's about the slide, rather the upkeep of the material on the ground. Something I would think the school would be responsible to maintain.
No, it’s not. Your statement is ridiculous, considering the school did not maintain the playground for safety. The school does need to be held accountable for the neglect of safety standards.
Why did he fly off the slide at such a velocity? Did another child potentially push him as he took off? In winter the ground is gonna be hard and frozen. Perhaps we need to set even higher standards of safety for kids’ playground equipment in light of basic facts like that. So sorry for his parents, teachers, and friends. How traumatizing to witness a child’s senseless death that way.
I mean we all grew up with even worst stuff and never had this happen I think it’s just a freak accident no one to really blame ngl. I remember as a kid we would go on the seesaw and stand on it and someone else would jump on the other side and we would go flying I hit my head a couple of times lmao
@@billyjean8057Yes it was a freak accident that could’ve been avoided if recess was inside that day or the school checked to see if the rubber mulch (that isn’t just there for decoration but as to help soften the blow) wasn’t frozen. Those kids were basically playing on concrete my guy.
When I was in 1st or 2nd grade it was winter in Japan (very icy) I was next in line to go down the slide, waiting for the kid in front of me to get off the bottom before going. The kid behind me was impatient and decided to shove me down the slide, I ended up face first into a patch of ice at the bottom and had a bruised face and bloody nose. No kids should have recess in those conditions. Teachers should take time to set up fun activities indoors where it is safe and warm for kids to play and get some energy out. Absolutely heartbreaking for that family. 💔
That may be the case but it is not a district wide protocol. And if it is not part of teacher duties to “test” the ground before sending kids out to recess, like any other day, why would they do it. This was just a freak accident we all feel empathy for. RIH
People really sue over anything these days, this is ridiculous. This is a very sad and freak accident. For the parents to try to benefit or get “justice” over a freak accident where no one is in the wrong is just wild.
I am sorry for this family’s loss, but this was an ACCIDENT. Suing the school district is going to hold the community taxpayers accountable for the cost of the lawsuit. That is NOT going to bring their son back and it’s going to deprive other students because of what it will cost the school district to fight the lawsuit.
It was an accident that could have been prevented. So yes,I agree they should sue the school. Had there been a proper amount of mulch on the ground to cushion the fall the kid wouldn't be dead. Also why let them use the playground if the ground is frozen solid?? Yes the school definitely could've taken precautions that would've prevented this child's death and if it were my son I'd be doing the same.
@@katez5205 who’s to say even with the “correct” amount of mulch it wouldn’t have been frozen solid and ended up the same way? I’m definitely for trying to keep things safe for kids but I don’t think the first response should be to sue the school.
i dont want to be a downer and i know people will be against me but i dont think this is the schools fault. to note it was a icey day and thats not notacable to the naked eye it seems a tad damper but thats all, we also have conflicting statements. these may come from the school trying to hush the incedent but i dont think they where. i just hope no one watching the incident gets arested as they almsot immeditly called the authoritys and seemed to do the best they could. its also clear that the slide has been used a lot and ive been on some playgrounds in my day but the slides always have that divit. thats something that is hard to fill with everyone being safe on there way down. i lean with the kid being somewhat reckless and going down head first as i doubt the kid went over a bar. its also described him falling to the ground and not catching himself witch seems unlikely to happen on a 5 foot drop sitting down. all the best to everyone involved
Theses parents literally just lost their child, even if if it wasn’t necessarily, the school‘s fault, I don’t think the parents were in the wrong because they don’t want this tragic incident to happen to any other child.
@@minacuesta soild take. I just dont think suing the school is the best method. Maybe they could try and work with the school to make the playground more safe. I do hope we see some camera footage to finally figure out what happened.
As tragic is this is it's an accident and accidents happen. It's not the school district's fault, there could have had 12 in of mulch there and if it had been wet or rained anytime prior to that and it froze that mulch would have been hard as concrete. In the United States we cannot keep suing everybody for our accidents, sometimes bad things happen And it's not anyone in particular's fault It's just an accident. In this situation I think it was an accident and that's all it was, a kid fell off of a slide accidentally.
And suing the school isn't helping anyone really. The education system is low on funds already, stuff like this might get the school closed and then u won't have education for kids.
Its amazing how many times my generation got hurt on the playground and looking forward at playgrounds today its like not much has even changed. The pain in the dad's eyes, that boy was his everything.
It's called winter. Do you think kids living in colder environments should be forced to play inside from October to March because they might hurt themselves on frozen ground or ice?
@@mrquirky3626According to the video, it wasn’t the cold winter season it was the lack of mulch so there wasn’t enough padding which is why she said, “Hard ground”. Why did you assume she was talking about the season???
@@DG-nk7jo Well as they said in the video "the officer arrived and describes the ground as frozen" so yeah that sounds seasonal. The lawyer is going after the mulch level, but that may be because they know they won't win with a frozen ground "don't let them play" approach. But mulch or no mulch if the ground is a frozen block of ice the result will be the same.
@@DG-nk7jo I also think it's fair to not think the kids should be out in the cold. I went to two elementary schools as a kid and neither school had us on the playground during the winter. We could go outside but the playground was closed, it can be unsafe and slippery. I don't necessarily think it makes the most sense to have kids on the playground in winter months.
While this is so, so tragic, so heartbreaking, sometimes accidents just happen. My opinion is that the biggest factor in this is that the ground was frozen hard, and nobody took that into consideration. The mulch had probably been compacted by snow/ice and was also probably still wet or damp. When fully dry, it probably would have had more cushion capability. I have no doubt that the groundskeepers would have raked it over and topped it off as warmer weather came around. My heartfelt condolences to this family but I really just think it was a horrible freak accident.
This is so heartbreaking for both the school and especially the parents. I’ve worked the playgrounds of elementary schools supervising students. Kids playing tag around the equipment. Many students run on the equipment basically throwing themselves down the slide making them go really fast in order to avoid being tagged.
I remember the episode of Rescue 911 when a kid had the string of his coat got caught and choked him. I had never heard of anything like that until now. RIP Dallin
This was a really horrible accident, but people need to stop suing people all the time. This was an accident, no one's fault and nothing anyone could have prevented.
This was someone’s fault! Playgrounds have wood chips and mulch for a reason. They need to be kept up to standard, otherwise they lead to injuries or deaths like these.

I feel terrible for the family. At the same time, I’m sick of these families suing schools for absolute accidents
$$$$. The precedent is set.
They want to keep accidents like these from occurring again.
I clicked this video thinking the same, but looking back, when I was in elementary school we didn't use the playground during the frozen months. We just went outside and milled around the pavement / snowbanks. 🤷
The slide was not up to standards and neither was the wood mulch.
Kids should be safe at school.
This is what I was thinking, because kids probably played on that slide a hundred times or so.
My guess is he went down head first, flew over that first curve.
I would of thought if there is regulations on the mulch depth they could very well take them to court and win
Yeah we had asphalt. Not exactly a soft landing either.

Here in my city in Canada we close the playgrounds during the winter, spring comes and we test the structure and open it back up.
I was just about to mention that. As a Canadian growing up, we were always told never to play at the playground in the winter months even in the month of March, we were even told to be very careful as things may have not thawed out yet as well black ice. They always always close them sometimes even putting barriers in place so nobody could go near them

Rubber freezes solid too
It was just a horrific set of circumstances..it does happen..I understand parents pain .but it's not something that can be directed at the school for blame ...he may have died regardless if ground was frozen or not 😢 and with it being cold ..your apt to slide much easier on a surface of plastic.. carried to much speed ..freak accidents do happen..I find it odd though because it's really not that high if he came off the first loop .then fell .?? Tottaly has to be with way he landed
@@karlfritz47It could very well be that he hit the ground the wrong way. They didn't confirm exactly what the injuries were. At any rate, the fact that they did not have the required amount of mulch on the playground is disturbing, those things should be inspected several times during the school year. Everybody that has ever tended a flower bed knows that mulch packs down as it lays, and it's especially going to do that when you have people running and jumping on it day in and day out.
Wood chips froze.
That’s what I was thinking too because kids at my elementary school used to jump off slides and climb back on them,
When I was a kid I fell from the top of a jungle gym, hit my chin on a bar on the way down and slammed into the ground, only got bleeding from my mouth and a big bump under my chin. It's so unfortunate that this boy didn't survive that fall, must have hit his head in a wrong angle.
The family should sue gravity not the school
I’m guessing because it was snowing outside, the slide was slippery and that he slid down the slide way too fast. Ice was probably on the slide. They did say the ground was “snowy,” and “rock hard” for a reason.

That's where you're wrong. A small amount of foresight would have prevented this death. Where were the thinking adults?
This is what happens when poor design meets idiocy, or in this case, a child. And some other comments stated it coulda been anyone's child, therefore I think higher guard rails and deeper mulch is a very good case for a law suit and to help ensure it doesn't happen to anyone else

But mulch or no mulch if the ground is a frozen block of ice the result will be the same.
@@DG-nk7jo I also think it's fair to not think the kids should be out in the cold. I went to two elementary schools as a kid and neither school had us on the playground during the winter. It's not school board...it's not mulch ..it was bad fate .. timing .. unfortunate situation. I feel bad to...I have two sons ..I couldn't imagine that happening. .

@@Revkor yup some people just won't hear anything else..but
Sad story to hear. My condolences to his parents and sisters.
Oh the poor father. My heart when out to him when he was in the photo crying. I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine.
This is heartbreaking news. In my area of CA, parks and schools have foam matting covering the ground in all playground areas, and injuries from falls have been avoided or reduced in most instances.
so sorry for youre loss he seemed like a happy kid
I'm so very sorry for the loss of your precious baby boy. Heartbreaking. Sweet babies, so innocent.
My deepest sympathies to the family. So sad.😢
This is one of those times when you remind yourself to enjoy every moment of your life because you never know when death will come.
This is an absolute nightmare. I'm so sorry to the parents, family and friends.
I could see the pain and heart broke in the fathers eyes poor boy may he rest in peace.
It's sad the kid died. It's even sadder that EVERYTHING in this country is a lawsuit nowadays.
Yeah I'm gonna go out on a limb, make a hot take here, and say if someone's kid dies at school because of something the school failed to do that was expected, that _should_ be a lawsuit.
How tf is that "even sadder?"
No, really.
Please try to justify that claim, in writing.
Because you sound sociopathic right now.
In what possible way could any sane human being think a lawsuit is sadder than the death of a child?
I'll wait.
@@Jhfisibejoso8pkabrvo2is8 that right, even sadder. The kid is one incident. There's multiple incidents across the country everyday. That ok with you princess?
@@SirUncleDolan I was wondering how long that slide had been there, how many thousands of kids went down it with no problems. And then, one kid had a very unfortunate ACCIDENT, and everyone wants to start burning witches.
Such a tragic lost my condolences to his family and friends Rest In Paradise Dallin🕯️🙏🏽🕯️
Sounds like someone pushed him off the side. I work at a school and we have slides just like this. I have never once seen a kid fall off the side while going down it. There's more to this story it seems
Slide could have been slippery that day and he slid off the end and head first
💜So Sorry for your loss
His older sister's in a couple of my classes, she wrote an essay about him and it happened last year, RIP Dallin 🕊
His older sister was in my fourth grade class. Not sure which older sister your talking about since he had 3. That’s awesome they wrote an essay about him. They were all very close ❤

@@ME-HI-IM-A-PROBLEM-HEHE Yeah
@@version3.051 that’s really cool! She was in the twins third grade class and my 4th grade class. It’s been so long since I’ve seen her. Tell her next time you see her that I say hi!
Probably shouldn’t even be using that equipment during the winter. No one did when I was a kid. We were allowed to bring sleds to school and go sledding at recess down some of the hills. Only on our butts and only certain sleds were allowed.
So sad sorry for your loss Prayers 🙏🙏🙏
I watched my Mom grieve my brother when I was young- it ended up taking her life. My heart goes out to this family.
This is so sad, RIP
