18-Month-Old Dies After Swallowing Button Battery

- Reese Hamsmith died more than a month after swallowing a button battery. What initially resembled a cold turned out to be symptoms directly connected to the ingestion of the battery. Eventually the 18-month-old suffered from a fistula, or a hole that ran from the esophagus and through the trachea. Reese died on Dec. 18, 2020, and now her family wants to spread awareness to make sure that the same thing doesn’t happen to other children.
I think it's incredible that she noticed the battery was missing. Something so small... And she acted immediately on it. But too much damage had already been done so fast. She was was truly a great mother to Reese. I hope she finds peace.

I was thinking the same thing...i dont have kids so there’s no reason for me to keep tabs on things like that but my first thought was holly cow good for her for even noticing something so tiny!!! Even with catching it she still couldn’t save her...thats got to be hard but like she said...she served a big purpose...i had NO idea!!!
I refuse to bring button batteries in my house after my oldest daughter almost out one in her mouth. it was the Disney phone and keys set they still sell at Walmart. I went to change the battery thinking it was a triple a and a small round button fell out and she scooped it up and I immediately grabbed it and threw the whole toy in the trash
Really? You think it's incredible? Maybe. Incredibly stupid. She knew the battery was there. Why would you have anything that a baby can harm themselves with in arms reach? That is bad parenting.
@@robbb416 They may have only realized there had been a button battery until they noticed a device with the battery compartment open. Once they saw how tiny the spot for the missing battery was, they realized what happened. They clearly hadn’t expected any batteries to be falling out. If they had realized the danger, they would have taken precautions, but obviously they didn’t know until it was too late.
Her child didn't pass in vain. She's saving other child's lives by sharing this story.
I agree. I have 8 months old baby and should keep an eye on her or even cleaning the house making sure there will be no small objects especially batteries around her. This is a heartbreaking story 😭 😭 😭. Praying for the family!🙏🙏🙏♥️

When I was a kid, I had also swallowed a button battery. My brother immediately knew and I was taken to the ER. The button passed with no issues. Never knew how dangerous they were until I watched this. May this angel Rest In Peace.
I was a little over a year old and I swallowed a round magnet and my mom took me to the hospital after having a bad fever. They said it was a cold and send her home. She didn’t know what to do and remembered some old recipe shredded raw potato and squeezing out only the juice, she made me drink it and that got it out.

I searched up just right now and saw a study about starches property used as a anti-corrosive measure for metals.
The thing you drank was raw starch which PH levels is 8 which is alkaline.
your mom maybe thought you were having an upset stomach so she did that to help you.
That was not the case of you having a fever or upset stomach but the recipe she remembered saved you.
When I was 5 I just swallowed a coin cause I thought it was a coin chocolate but I immediately spitted it out in the bathroom (: and I've never swallowed something since I was 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 but I hope this mother finds peace and may the cute little baby rest in peace

Seeing her daughter look at her in that hospital bed with that sad and scared look on her face as I’m sure she was and wanted to just be in her mommas arms where she felt safe just utterly killed me inside. I could NOT imagine. It just makes me want to pick her up off that bed and hold her tight. God please comfort this family, they need you. Rest high baby girl❤️

As a mom, it always makes my blood run cold to see someone grieving their child. Things can happen so quickly. Anyone blaming them should be ashamed of themselves

Thinking back to my kids childhood, it’s a miracle they survived toddlerhood. We had so many things with tempting, shiny, button batteries- even their “talking” books.
This makes me aware of how easy it is to lose a child. It literally can happen to any child, in the blink of an eye.
LITERALLY in the blink of an eye your whole world can be turned upside down. It's terrifying. This is definitely an eye opener.

My son, did almost the same, didn't swallow , but "ate" It ..he was a 08 month year old baby... And so, his right kidney failed... Many procedures. I' m so Glad they worked!!!. Now he is 20, a gorgeous and health Young Man.

As a mother of an 18 month old girl who literally puts anything and everything in her mouth, my worst fear in the world is one millisecond of not seeing what she’s doing and it resulting in her death. Reese looks so much like my baby. I’ll protect her so much more now

This is me with my 14 month old. She cant leave my sight or shes eating catfood or worse.
I do my best to keep her line of sight and pray a lot.
As moms we have to walk the line between constant vigilance and being consumed by fear.

As a medic I was called to a 3 year old who was accidentally hit by his dads pickup truck as he was backing up. This was 2006. He coded as I intubated him. I was told he had no chance at survival as his skull was crushed. At that point I wanted to see backup cameras on all vehicles and signed a petition for it. I hope they get this law for the button battery.

I’d say education is more attainable than backup cameras on every single vehicle tbh. I think there should be booklet issued to every new parent with a page on each of these kind of dangers you might not think about.

The image of the baby on the hospital bed and her mom telling her to sleep… my heart. I cannot imagine such a painful thing. My mom was always so paranoid about any batteries around us but I never knew why until now, I don’t have children of my own. I didn’t know how button batteries can be so deadly.

Anything that fits through a toilet paper roll hole will fit in a child’s throat. At the children’s hospital my son goes to there’s a wall full of items that had to be operated and taken out because they were swallowed items. It’s crazy the things I seen on there

There's another comment on here that says a lady gave her sister a balloon and the baby bit into the balloon and it created a suction like effect and she swallowed it , they called 911 but she still died. So becareful of that to plzzzz!

The moment I saw her laying in that hospital bed, with tears in her eyes and a frown on her face, I started crying. She looked so scared and sad…it really hurts my heart to see any kid go through pain like this. She’s in a better place now. Rest easy little angel ❤️

@@karenacton3854 My then 2 year old swallowed a small battery. Thankfully, she brought me the toy she got it from (I didn't even know it had a battery) and told me she ate te sweet. I rushed her to the children's hospital, where they Xrayed her immediately. The got the battery out within an hour. I carefully checked everything in the house. I was lucky that my daughter had the words to tell me.

I was okay until that moment. I’m sitting here with my 11 month old baby girl sleeping in my arms and I have my 2 year old girl and 7 year old boy asleep in their beds. I bawled. I can’t imagine losing one of my babies or seeing them in that condition. Baby girl looked so sad like she just wanted to feel okay and be snuggled up with her mommy in the comfort of her home. 😔

How many people lock up everything that has a battery in it though because she took a battery out of something it was already in.
I think it’s time for me to put a battery in a box with lock. It’s protect to not just a thief but also danger to children.
I hope rechargeable battery is safer because you don’t have to buy battery and take it out the old one. just charge the battery with cable or wireless.

I have raised two now 20-somethings. I had absolutely no idea that these batteries were so bad - the part where she said they could burn for days even after being removed. This mom did everything she could. RIP Reese.
This tore my heart in two. I completely sympathize with this broken-hearted mother. I may not have any children, but I cried for this mother.

I heard her story before but seeing Reese's eyes look so sad and those tubes in her broke my heart. My daughter is the same age as Reese, same month and year and it kills me to think how mom felt watching her suffer like that.

That shot of her in the hospital bed with her little pig tails, starting at 3:20, is absolutely the sweetest yet saddest thing I have ever seen. Even as a 63-year-old man i can say I couldn't stop crying. and I honestly wish I could have somehow traded places with her. That was an absolute tragedy, the real sad part is that poor mother now trying to convince our brainless, thoughtless incompetent lawmakers to move on something that shouldn't require a second thought. They should be forced to watch this video every damn day until something is done to change what is so simple to fix. Never stop trying mom, so, so sorry for your loss. She looked a lot like my youngest granddaughter who's now four. How you were able to ever function again is a testament to you as well. May you always be in his eyes.

Bluetooth remotes for selfie sticks, none of mine have screws and come apart just dropping it. Luckily I keep them in a box and don't have children in the house.
Ik this sounds weird/nerdy but as a kid I had one of those Digimon Digivice tomagachi games and that had button batteries in it and the backplate/cover was like a TV remote with a slide clip. Granted I was 6 and knew batteries weren’t food but I had a little sister that was 1 at the time so this situation could have happened to a lot of people cause those things were popular for a good while.

damn the fact that they noticed a battery missing.. truly good people.. i have so many batteries loose in random drawers etc i dont think id notice that :( they were quick and reactive but still didnt mean anything in the end :(

I put them in tiny plastic boxes. There's no kids around, tho. The ends can't touch metal or they can oxidize and get ruined.

At least they knew what happened to her.Her death will prevent many other's because many people see this and they're going to be extra careful with what's lying around the house and things kid's can easily disturb.

I literally cried by watching the kid struggling with pain that can be expressed in her eyes 3.31 and that look to her mom made me devastated ,as a mother i can't imagine how painful it is to lose a child, praying for the whole family
I have heard of many incidents of parents losing a child, but nothing brought my tears up as much as hearing this mother tell their story and seeing this precious little girl going through the fight. I am SO SORRY for your loss. How I wish I could DO more than just say that. I can, I WILL ALSO PRAY for each one of you and ask God to let you know Him and His love and compassion.
If this doesn’t give you tears or a pit in your stomach, you have a problem. This is just heartbreaking.
