I refuse to bring button batteries in my house after my oldest daughter almost out one in her mouth. it was the Disney phone and keys set they still sell at Walmart. I went to change the battery thinking it was a triple a and a small round button fell out and she scooped it up and I immediately grabbed it and threw the whole toy in the trash

Once they saw how tiny the spot for the missing battery was, they realized what happened. They clearly hadn’t expected any batteries to be falling out. If they had realized the danger, they would have taken precautions, but obviously they didn’t know until it was too late.
When I was a kid, I had also swallowed a button battery. My brother immediately knew and I was taken to the ER. The button passed with no issues. Never knew how dangerous they were until I watched this. May this angel Rest In Peace.
I was a little over a year old and I swallowed a round magnet and my mom took me to the hospital after having a bad fever. They said it was a cold and send her home. She didn’t know what to do and remembered some old recipe shredded raw potato and squeezing out only the juice, she made me drink it and that got it out.

I searched up just right now and saw a study about starches property used as a anti-corrosive measure for metals. The thing you drank was raw starch which PH levels is 8 which is alkaline. your mom maybe thought you were having an upset stomach so she did that to help you. That was not the case of you having a fever or upset stomach but the recipe she remembered saved you.
When I was 5 I just swallowed a coin cause I thought it was a coin chocolate but I immediately spitted it out in the bathroom (: and I've never swallowed something since I was 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 but I hope this mother finds peace and may the cute little baby rest in peace

As a mother of an 18 month old girl who literally puts anything and everything in her mouth, my worst fear in the world is one millisecond of not seeing what she’s doing and it resulting in her death. Reese looks so much like my baby. I’ll protect her so much more now
This is me with my 14 month old. She cant leave my sight or shes eating catfood or worse. I do my best to keep her line of sight and pray a lot. As moms we have to walk the line between constant vigilance and being consumed by fear.

Agreed. Thinking back to my kids childhood, it’s a miracle they survived toddlerhood. We had so many things with tempting, shiny, button batteries- even their “talking” books. This makes me aware of how easy it is to lose a child. It literally can happen to any child, in the blink of an eye.
My son, did almost the same, didn't swallow , but "ate" It ..he was a 08 month year old baby... And so, his right kidney failed... Many procedures. I' m so Glad they worked!!!. Now he is 20, a gorgeous and health Young Man.

I’m a 14 year old boy and I cried to this I’m usually a tough boy but with these type of story’s I cry but I’m not fully developed yet but I just wanted to share that I cried.
As a medic I was called to a 3 year old who was accidentally hit by his dads pickup truck as he was backing up. This was 2006. He coded as I intubated him. I was told he had no chance at survival as his skull was crushed. At that point I wanted to see backup cameras on all vehicles and signed a petition for it. I hope they get this law for the button battery.
I’d say education is more attainable than backup cameras on every single vehicle tbh. I think there should be booklet issued to every new parent with a page on each of these kind of dangers you might not think about.

Searching what was my daughter purpose if she passed only at 22 months. This came up and I feel for the mother. My daughter passed 3 weeks ago and it hurts, but in the end for this mom to say that she still has a purpose reached in my heart so much.
This is why Duracell has added a bitter coating to their button batteries and have them in child proof packaging, but still ALWAYS keep all batteries locked up with little ones.

I rushed her to the children's hospital, where they Xrayed her immediately. The got the battery out within an hour. I carefully checked everything in the house. I was lucky that my daughter had the words to tell me.

I was okay until that moment. I’m sitting here with my 11 month old baby girl sleeping in my arms and I have my 2 year old girl and 7 year old boy asleep in their beds. I bawled. I can’t imagine losing one of my babies or seeing them in that condition. Baby girl looked so sad like she just wanted to feel okay and be snuggled up with her mommy in the comfort of her home. 😔
I think it’s time for me to put a battery in a box with lock. It’s protect to not just a thief but also danger to children. I hope rechargeable battery is safer because you don’t have to buy battery and take it out the old one. just charge the battery with cable or wireless.
My question is how in the world did she end up ingesting the battery in the first place? I am not implying that she wasnt being watched, but it still begs to question how she got to ingesting the battery.

Howso? Isn't it common knowledge that babies tend to swallow or put stuff in their mouths. Especially when they're teething. And that batteries aren't meant to be swallowed. Mothers need to do everyday simple things like going to the toilet, answering the door, making a cup of coffee. While you may still be able to keep an eye on your child when you do these things, it is not possible to see everything they do. A child may be playing happily with her back to you. All seems well, so you don’t feel any alarm. Use your common sense and stop being so judgemental.

Even as a 63-year-old man i can say I couldn't stop crying. and I honestly wish I could have somehow traded places with her. That was an absolute tragedy, the real sad part is that poor mother now trying to convince our brainless, thoughtless incompetent lawmakers to move on something that shouldn't require a second thought. I am so sorry for your loss. It's so easy for a kid to grab something and put it in their mouth when your back is only turned for a second. It's how I wound up eating a penny when I was little despite the fact my mom always watched me like a hawk and usually caught me things like that. Fortunately, it was harmless for me. You did a wonderful job as parents in how vigilantly you responded and in even noticing the battery was gone at all when a lot of parents would've never caught it. You gave that little girl the best chance she could've had even if fate had other plans. I hope in the time since you recorded this you've found more comfort as a family. Bluetooth remotes for selfie sticks, none of mine have screws and come apart just dropping it. Luckily I keep them in a box and don't have children in the house.
Ik this sounds weird/nerdy but as a kid I had one of those Digimon Digivice tomagachi games and that had button batteries in it and the backplate/cover was like a TV remote with a slide clip. Granted I was 6 and knew batteries weren’t food but I had a little sister that was 1 at the time so this situation could have happened to a lot of people cause those things were popular for a good while.
This has just broken my heart. My daughter is 20 months. I cannot imagine the pain this family has endured. Many blessings to you, even in her short life you could feel she was the focus of unconditional love from a doting mother who would have done anything for her.

Seeing her daughter look at her in that hospital bed with that sad and scared look on her face as I’m sure she was and wanted to just be in her mommas arms where she felt safe just utterly killed me inside. I could NOT imagine. It just makes me want to pick her up off that bed and hold her tight. God please comfort this family, they need you. Rest high baby girl❤️

As a medic I was called to a 3 year old who was accidentally hit by his dads pickup truck as he was backing up. This was 2006. He coded as I intubated him. I was told he had no chance at survival as his skull was crushed. At that point I wanted to see backup cameras on all vehicles and signed a petition for it. I hope they get this law for the button battery.

@@karenacton3854 My then 2 year old swallowed a small battery. Thankfully, she brought me the toy she got it from (I didn't even know it had a battery) and told me she ate te sweet. I rushed her to the children's hospital, where they Xrayed her immediately. The got the battery out within an hour. I carefully checked everything in the house. I was lucky that my daughter had the words to tell me.

I was okay until that moment. I’m sitting here with my 11 month old baby girl sleeping in my arms and I have my 2 year old girl and 7 year old boy asleep in their beds. I bawled. I can’t imagine losing one of my babies or seeing them in that condition. Baby girl looked so sad like she just wanted to feel okay and be snuggled up with her mommy in the comfort of her home. 😔

Mothers need to do everyday simple things like going to the toilet, answering the door, making a cup of coffee. While you may still be able to keep an eye on your child when you do these things, it is not possible to see everything they do. A child may be playing happily with her back to you. All seems well, so you don’t feel any alarm. Use your common sense and stop being so judgemental.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's so easy for a kid to grab something and put it in their mouth when your back is only turned for a second. It's how I wound up eating a penny when I was little despite the fact my mom always watched me like a hawk and usually caught me things like that. Fortunately, it was harmless for me.

Bluetooth remotes for selfie sticks, none of mine have screws and come apart just dropping it. Luckily I keep them in a box and don't have children in the house.
Ik this sounds weird/nerdy but as a kid I had one of those Digimon Digivice tomagachi games and that had button batteries in it and the backplate/cover was like a TV remote with a slide clip. Granted I was 6 and knew batteries weren’t food but I had a little sister that was 1 at the time so this situation could have happened to a lot of people cause those things were popular for a good while.

Laser pointers have button batteries that pop right out the back with a twist.

This has just broken my heart. My daughter is 20 months. I cannot imagine the pain this family has endured. Many blessings to you, even in her short life you could feel she was the focus of unconditional love from a doting mother who would have done anything for her.
This is just something no parent should ever have to endure. I cannot imagine the agony. It’s the scariest thing about having kids. I wish I could take away thus mom’s pain.
I appreciate this mom being vulnerable and telling her story to the world. 😢 Makes me cry that this happened.

I have raised two now 20-somethings. I had absolutely no idea that these batteries were so bad - the part where she said they could burn for days even after being removed. This mom did everything she could. RIP Reese.

damn the fact that they noticed a battery missing.. truly good people.. i have so many batteries loose in random drawers etc i dont think id notice that :( they were quick and reactive but still didnt mean anything in the end :(

I put them in tiny plastic boxes. There's no kids around, tho. The ends can't touch metal or they can oxidize and get ruined.
SO do I (have a lot of batteries in drawers) of course, I have no small children at home, but still....something to think about
At least they knew what happened to her.Her death will prevent many other's because many people see this and they're going to be extra careful with what's lying around the house and things kid's can easily disturb.
