    We started with an O'Day 19 about15 years ago. When venturing into the ocean, I wanted a fixed keel but still trailerable sailboat. We found a Capri 22. Perfect size as we honed our sailing skills and I got to understand sailboats. All of the rigging and sails have been upgraded.
    Early on I abandoned the noisy 2-cycle engine for an equivalent power electric outboard. With a background in electrical engineering, I delved into the battery and charging system to use a mooring rather than a slip. By doing so, we focused on sailing rather than motoring other than in the mooring fields. We also participated in the local racing, not to win prizes, but to further practice and refine our sailing skills. While racing, one cannot start the motor. Also, maneuvers need to be done quickly and many times during a race - the practice thing again.
    This Capri 22 fit my needs very well. I could be out in 30 kt gusts and still be comfortable - but very active!
    After my wife slipped on ice breaking her ankle, she was not as nimble. The cockpit mounted traveller kept getting in her way - she has short legs and stature. Now that we both retired, we purchased a Catalina 310. It cost 20 times more than the other boats, but had the things we knew we wanted: standing room, full galley, toilet and shower, forward cabin with a built-in step to get onto the inner-spring mattress, a steering wheel, and a walk-though transom. There is easy access to the engine, drivetrain, and tanks for maintenance - I no longer bend as I did in my youth.
    We plan on doing more than just day sailing and want to make longer coastal cruises - maybe even the "Great Loop".
    Yes, we followed a similar thought and buying process that you outlined. Looking forward to the story of your journey.

    I have had two Catalina 30's. I love the boat. Feels bigger than it is inside and out. Easy to work on. Sails great and the one I have now has a shoal keel which is just over 4 feet. Could not be happier. And everything is less expensive being just 30 feet.

    Really enjoying your videos. I'm here because I've been thinking about getting a sailboat. I've been around boats most of my life, have owned five of them and lived on one for 8 years. But they've all been power boats - runabouts mostly, plus a 35' pontoon houseboat. I lived on that one in the California Delta, owned it for 23 years. But watching your videos has convinced me that I should probably not get a sailboat. I would never get a new one, so would end up doing a lot of repair work and maintenance, and I've done so much of that throughout my life on various boats that the idea of it sort of overwhelms me these days. Along those lines, I don't think you missed out on anything in this auction considering the potential for big trouble with that one. I'm not far from 70 and I guess I'm getting tired. But I miss the water. It gets in your blood. And living on it was one of the best experiences of my life. I now live in an area where the nearest lake is about an hour away and the ocean is about 2.5 hours from home. It's not very convenient for boating. Regardless, I sure enjoy watching your adventures and your progression as you and your wife move toward your ideal boat. Sail on, matey.

    my situation is im 2-3 hrs from cape cod, but 35 min from the connecticut river. if im going to the river more times than the ocean there will be some features needed. a must would be a swing keel or ctr board hull for the shallows on the river. i wanted something with standing head room, yet trailerable. being a previous catalina 22 owner i looked for many cat 25 ads as i could. prices were from free to $4000. found that the Oday 25/26 have standing head room but fit the bill better as the ctr board is only about 60-70 lbs and the rest of the keel weight is mounted to the hull. (draws 2'6" ctr board up). a nice feature if a keel cable snaps. ( like on my cat 22) 60-70 lbs to deal with versus 1900 on a cat 25 . so i looked for Oday's on market place and found a clean 1985 26 with 2 sets of crisp (main, jib and genoa) usable sails. a spinnaker, CDI roller fuller, fully equipped with all the kitchen and safety items, a inflatable dinghy and a honda 4 stoke 8 hp outboard within an hour and a half from me. some scrapes on the sides and the bottom needs to be sanded then repainted. I have a dual axle trailer im modifying to trailer it (changing from a power boat with rollers to a sailboat with bunk board) best part is the owner delivered it and left it on his trailer while i get mine ready....purchased for $4200 most i ever paid..but it fits my bill better than that cat 30 for $2k i also found and i dont have to pay storage fees.

    Oh man, was watching for the Cat 22 sailing adventures in your area (Does one cross the gulf stream to the Bahamas on a great day and good forecast, I know the 29 foot Maco boat was lost a few weeks ago). However, one guy made it down to Fort Jefferson in his, with his wife on an overnight sail. I was just in Florida for two weeks and you guys had great weather from 65 - 83 and awesome winds for a Cat 22. Alright, sounds like you have the new boat already and are just waiting to do the Big Reveal!! Waiting to see how this channel goes:-)

    I love the channel and live near by. I sail dinghies out of the CCSC. I'm looking at boats but I haven't convinced myself I want to buy a sailboat at all when I can take out a dinghy pretty much any time I want. (Although I'm limited to just Clearwater Bay.)

    • @AdventuresInParadise
      @AdventuresInParadise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is that near The Colombia? I wonder if it will just seem slow and boring compared to what you're doing, and with the dinghy you can sail off the channel where there are less boats whizzing by. Check out the Mirage Adventure Island sailing kayak... that would be a good one for around here with all the islands to camp at.

      @@AdventuresInParadise Yes that’s it. I used to have an O’Day 25 down at the St. Pete marina, but the commute to the boat was more than I could take. There are a couple Catalinas in the area for charter, a 309 and a 320. I’m thinking we will do that for a bit, then decide if we want to buy again.

      Yes, about the same as pulling the lever on a slot machine... you could win big but it's a big risk also. And even if it's a perfect boat, it'll still be 6-8k in marina fees and maintenance each year, which some people don't realize.
