Nice to hear someone say good things about the etron. So-what is we have to plug in a little sooner than others! Being seniors, we enjoy stopping a little sooner than in a ICE car.
Agree. I can add that when road tripping with kids, or anyone that’s not that interested in EVs, not having to go deep to get good charging speed is a blessing. That *flexibility* really makes up for the somewhat limited range (which is not really a limitation). Sometimes I even top up from like 80-100% if someone wants a coffe or a snack early, and it happens to be a fast charger there. Most of the time, the car is ready before we are. 🤩
Love the way the eTron's charger port opens. The BMW i4 has 2 years of free 30 minute charge via Electrify America. Fortunately we have a local EA station.
The 14 second dialogue-free grocery cart push out of the parking spot made me chuckle. I swear, so many little things about Walmarts that I just don’t like, and unreturned carts clogging spots is just one of many of the common problems there.
I took a trip along part of the same route with my EV6 (SE of Clarksville to Wilmington). Fun to see some of the same stops and that you went near me. In Clarksville, I used the first charger for my first EV America charge in March and it went well.
You have an amazing amount of patience. I realize this is your “job.” But your planning is excellent, and like me, you generally give yourself a lot of safety margin. This real world experience should be mandatory for anyone considering an EV. It just reinforces my opinion that the current EV owners are beta testers, and the US is several years before EVs can be a reasonable alternative for most drivers. Keep it up!
You normally drive more than 200 miles a day? Saying you don't want an EV because some day you might need to drive 600 miles is like buying that stupid double-parked dually truck because some day you might need to tow a trailer. The average US commute is around 35 miles a day, charge at home with a level 2 overnight every 4-5 days and it's much less of a hassle than an ICE car for normal use.
@@Ficon you buy a vehicle for way more than just a commute. An EV may work for you and others. But there is a significant amount of the population that it does not work for. Not everyone does what you do.

@@mcar6592 Yup. The same as literally any other vehicle. So knock off the “EV buyers are beta testers” rhetoric. The only ones literally beta testing are the Tesla owners. EV range is a non-issue for the vast majority of drivers and infrastructure will get better soon (look at Europe).
@@Ficon did you actually see the entire video? The problems with the chargers? He was stopping every 100-150 miles to be sure he could stay charged. If you had problems like that at the gas pumps, you would be furious. Plus, time is your most valuable asset. It’s the only asset that you can’t make more of. And yes, I drive fairly long distances frequently. Pulling heavy loads. A beta tester is someone who is willing to take a chance with a new technology, knowing there will be bugs that have to be worked out. I’ve got no problem with electric cars. You can tell electrify America takes a lot of pride in their network. Really hoping this infusion of federal money to expand EV charging networks will help motivate companies to take this more seriously.
Always fun seeing travelers' perspectives rolling into Nashville (plus into areas I rarely go as a lifetime resident). I do wish the charging infrastructure was better, but it's improving, at least. Also wish it wasn't per-minute. You seem to have dodged the woo-girls, Broadway bachelorette parties, pedal taverns, and only accosted by one party bus on the Korean Vets bridge--nice job!
I love how Kyle's always like "Gee, I wonder why it's not charging correctly. Is it a car issue? Maybe because I'm running the A/C?" >>Every time he's at an EA station
Just completed a road trip from Nashville to the Chicago burbs on 7/14-7/19 so I too stopped at the EA stations in Clarksville, TN, Paducah, KY and Mount Vernon, IL. Only 1 150kW charger worked at Clarksville and EA said that the whole station is down due to the need for a software update so it was probably not the Audi. My Kia EV6 could only get 92kW from the 150kW charger. Other than this station, the other 11 charging stops at EA were good. EA recommends using NFC in more rural areas where cell coverage may be lacking rather than starting charging via the app and as an added bonus the NFC payment activates quicker.
Quick tip: you don’t have to select the ChargePoint card before holding it near the station. Just a double tap to bring up the wallet and and hold near and it will automatically select the ChargePoint card. I discovered this accidentally 😂
I bought one based on their experience and I absolutely love it. Super comfortable, dead silent and the charging is great. I have the Premium and my only knock is the sound system is just ok
I wish we had gotten the etron instead of a x5. Back in 2019 when we were looking for a new car for my dad, we loved the etron. And at that time they were greatly discounted. But we didn’t know anything about ev and were worried about the range, so we got an x5 instead. The etron is so nice and quiet. It better suits our driving. And my dad ever does road trips anymore now he’s 70, so the range wouldn’t have matter. But now Etrons have gotten much more expensive.

I carry a water spray bottle, a very small bottle of windex, and bug squeegee with detachable handle. Starting to see a few Tesla Supercharges locations with bug squeegee stations, but usually only at large truck stops.
My certified pre owned Mercedes EQE SUV is coming with 1.5 years of the 2 years left on the unlimited 30 minute EA charging sessions - plus I will have access to all the Tesla superchargers very soon with an adapter. Can’t wait to make all the Tesla Fan Boys drool when they see the Hyper Screen.

That Clarksville charger is a known turd. I’m not surprised it has issues. Sometime you will have to try the shortcut trip through Southern Illinois through Carbondale and Marion. Off interstate we need a lot more chargers here.
Well, the Chevy bolt EV is $25,600. Very good for commutes. If you don’t really need a Tesla, I suggest looking into the cheaper options. Just as good, and the price may be more attainable for you
Were those fried pickles Alyssa was eating? I have never heard of a fried pickle. Sounds interesting. Are they good? Do you eat them with any condiment or just straight up? Thank you.
Thanks for posting! We’re about to drive from Colorado to North Carolina in December. I’m glad to hear it’s an easy drive. Is it super hilly going through Tennessee?
What mode are you driving in? The highway efficiency gain with lower ride height in Dynamic or Eco is around 10% (although Eco is too low and soft for terrible US roads, can hit bump stops on big dips) and you should be seeing more than 2.3 mi/kWh unless you are doing 85+ mph the whole way. Curious what your standard range test will come out at. In my experience, 2.5-2.8 mi/kWh is very doable with a warm battery pack.
You guys really need to delve more into the seriousness of the 2019-22 Safety Recalls 93U9/93V2 / High-Voltage Battery Module(s) for the e-tron. As of this writing, there’s still no “remedy” other than to “watch it” and “only charge to 80%”. That leaves you with a realistic 170 miles on a summer day and 100 or less in the dead of winter.
I can’t believe i watch two FULL videos . I actually enjoyed it. The only thing I disliked was Kyle’s desire to stop to charge up so late at night. Very unsafe. Also, I’m confused why they didn’t charge up completely each time. Great video though.
Another question: how do you determine which states charge by the minute vs kWH? (thanks in advance and thanks so much for making these informative videos 💯 👏)
I really wish Teslas would charge at 140 KW all the way to 80%. We don't need 250 KW charging when the battery is low, what we need is reasonable charging speeds all the way to 80%.
Paid close attention to this video cause I travel that Statesville to Asheville leg. I am getting an E-tron S next month and I was a bit worried about being able to make it into Asheville because of that climb. My 2nd home is actually Weaverville and I'm thinking a better route would to use 81 from DC to Weaverville/Asheville. Any thoughts road tripping from DC to Asheville?
Isn't the e tron battery pack 86.5 kw usable out of 95 kw? You've mentioned 91 a couple times on previous videos as well. Is the new software update an unlock of this additional capacity or just a typo?
Kyle why don't you try to get to a hotel earlier than midnight so that you don't have to complain about the charging not being fast enough to fill up your car most people get there in the evening before it gets too dark not at midnight and only have 8 hours after you paid $150 to stay there
For Kyle: Out of curiosity, why would you recommend only using the 150kW (and not the 350kW) for this car? (around ~9:47 in this video). Seems like 350kW would make it charge faster? (and sorry if this is a silly question - still trying to come up to speed on the charging curves, etc… 😜😎)
My only complaint is the screen location and dusty piano gloss black plastic. That screen is caked in fingerprints and dust. Not that nice to look at while the sun is glaring on it and it's a big demerit. I also like my infotainment screens to be like that stuck-on tablet-style because it means you aren't constantly looking down to look at the screen. Also, no physical buttons for the HVAC controls is another issue that would get annoying real fast
