      Maybe it isn't allowed but I regularly drive 200+ in the Netherlands. When you know where the police is, it's quite easy. Some simple highway basics and rules and you can speed whatever you like. Just don't do it on the ringroad of Rotterdam or Amsterdam. But the long stretches towards away from the Randstad area, some are even better to speed that the German autobahns. Because of better asphalt quality, better views in long corners (Germany has many times bad views in long curves on autobahns) and also in Netherlands are less long lasting roadworks. That is indeed the disatvantage of Germany. Roadworks take so long.

    4:20 . it takes a few seconds for the gas cap to open because the gas tanks in PHEVs are pressurised and hermetically sealed.
    a PHEV can drive for months in electric only so the gas tank must trap the vapors that may form.

    This is a very interesting video Misha. It makes sense that the fuel efficiency does not decrease with the same proportion the speed increased which I will explain below if anyone is interested.
    The first part is that the relationship between fuel efficiency and speed is non-linear mainly due to the non-linearity of the resistive forces with increased speed. These resistive forces in modern day vehicles are typically dominated by air resistance. The formula for air resistance at a given speed is Fd = 0.5*p*(v^2)*Cd*A. In this case (assuming the air density is largely the same between runs) "p", "Cd" and "A" are constant values and can therefore be excluded for this comparison. This means that the drag force (Fd) is directly proportional to the square of the velocity (v). If we put some numbers into this theory, we can show that the linear relationship between 102 km/h and 164 km/h is ~1.61 whereas the relationship of the squares is ~2.59. This means the engine is having to do 2.59 times instead of 1.61 times more work just to overcome the increase in air resistance. Why is this relationship of the squares (2.59) not the same as the relationship of the fuel consumption figures (3.37)?
    Well, this leads to the second part, the ratios are not the same because combustion engines are designed to be more efficient at certain RPMs, usually cruising RPMs in the region of 2000 to 3500. I am not a chemical or powertrain engineer, so I cannot comment further on specifically how this works or why this range is chosen. However, what it means is that the RPM at 102 km/h is causing the engine to be relatively more efficient than at 164 km/h (made worse by the fact Misha was driving for some parts at 315 km/h with revs higher than 6000 RPM).

    Thank you for this test, because I was considering to buy me one and was afraid exactly about this, fuel consumption around 30 liters when going that fast. I do this twice a month with a slightly slower car, an Audi A8L V8 diesel, vmax 285 km/h and my average speed on a 700 km distance is 156 km/h which is some less than yours 166 km/h, but the exciting thing is that I just consume about 12-13 liters of diesel for going that fast AND I need no refuel on that 700 km. So talking about efficiency, diesel rules.

    As somebody who spent a great deal of time getting up early and driving hard in Germany, the statistic I worked off was minutes per tank. The trick to a high average speed was balancing the time spent in the gas station against the time on the Autobahnen. Last stop was critical, don't overfill, it costs you time.

  • @hene6539
    @hene6539 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You derived a factor of 3.37 between those numbers. That comes from a simple drag force formula where velocity is squared == energy needed increases in x^2 fashion. So you double the speed you need, you quadruple the fuel need.

    With our 110km/h limits in Australia, given your 7.1 @ 100km/hr, I'd imagine seeing around 7.5 l/100km. In real world conditions, and with 680hp, that number, for a serious sports car, would leave most diesels crying by the side of the road in shame over here.

    I was eager to know what maxing it out in combination with refuelling meant for the bottom line difference in trip time. Logically, one does need to stop once in a while, hence on the ‘normal’ return trip, where no fuel stops were needed, the trip time of 22:33 - 17:32= 5:01 also includes a healthy 12 minutes pitstop, added to the 4:49 driving time. That brings the total trip time difference to 1:43, quite significant! Looking at fuel cost only, one should definitely floor it to achieve the shortest trip time, if a billable hour at the destination returns over €123,14 per hour!
    Just joking. Enjoyed the video, would love to do such a lengthy autobahn trip in such a short timespan myself sometime!

    The whole world will be an easier place if everyone changes to litres and kilometers. If you drove at an indicated 120kph, I am sure you will get 8l/100 which is very good for that large capacity engine. In the UK they sell petrol in litres but the cars still show miles per gallon.
