- The conducting competition of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival
With the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra and the conductors: Marc Albrecht, Marin Alsop, Flavio Chamis, Sören Eckhoff, Jeffrey Goldberg, Oliver Holt, Steven Mercurio, Arthur Post, Carlos Spierer, Matthew Taylor, Stefan Tetzlaff and Leonard Bernstein.
Eleven young conductors applied to take part in a conducting course led by Leonard Bernstein in Salzau. Only four of them were allowed to work with the world-famous maestro in the concert that followed.
VHS recording, 1988.
I watched Marin Alsop lead the Colorado Symphony in the performance of Beethoven’s 9th. It was so wonderful. After the performance there was a Q&A and she talked fondly of L Bernstein. Unforgettable day for me - and I don’t understand music; I just love it
Marin Alsop is the only conductor I recognize from this group. She's gone on to be a world-class conductor. Most recently left the Baltimore Symphony after a outstanding tenure there.
Alsop conducted the Cliburn finals this year in Ft Worth; outstanding dictum and effort, beautiful work with the finalists. She also concluded the Proms with the BBC this year and was an audience favorite! I look for her every chance I get. I did not know she was one of many on Lenny’s arm! Figures…
I know for sure the principal cellist went on to play with the SFS. He was even in the Keeping Score documentaries by MTT !
@@paulmeggs5315 I didn't know that either. I meet her in the 90s in NYC. She did a yearly Christmas presentation at Lincoln Center of "Too Hot to Handel." A gospel/jazz riff on, what else, The Messiah. It was the highlight of the NY season and it was brilliant. And so is she.
Alsop world class?????
Yes, she has conducted all over the world. Check out her resume!@@bigbong620
His musical personality is so powerful, he galvanized the orchestra by his mere presence. How can that be taught?
Watch the program on conductors. Isaac Stern says something very interesting about conductors. Lenny was a genius who loved people and music who radiated communication.
He's got natural charisma. Just watch how he rehearses any orchestra.
Que belíssima aula! Isso que é professor! Esse vídeo é um tesouro para todos os futuros maestros, bem como para os amantes da música. Obrigado, Bernstein!
Bernstein’s conducting technique is so ‘effortless’.
What a fantastic musician
Truly!
So great to watch my conducting teacher Carlos Spierer, he is an amazing musician with marvellous knowledge of music and great teachings.
Which one is he?
@@kerrgal The arrogant one that argues with Bernstein and it ends up Bernstein showing off to him on the podium,Bernstein also gives him a lecture about B.S..... ing the young orchestra.
So wait...I see the lesson from Maestro but they skipped the best part with Jeffrey and Lenny gettin' hot and heavy at the club to Tears for Fears
Grest scenes of Maestro🤩🌹.Forever Leonard Bernstein
Minutes 21:00 to 27:00 are just incredible
His knowledge of every nuance of the score is amazing
Alsop, I feel, is part of the reason Yunchan Lin WON the Van Cliburn Competition.
The notes on this piece are of excellent quality.
13:20 It's the scene that was reenacted in the movie Maestro!
and then they f***ed
@@samaritan29they fucked why? Dammit... It's a movie. Doesn't need to be a conversion of real life
@@Kevs3114that’s how it happened in real life
Genius! The whole situation!
UNIQUE GENIUS. I love Lenny 😍
Sibelius, so easy to read, but so difficult to interpret. A true Master Class !
Highly recommend the rehearsal of the Schumann with Karajan. Very interesting.
Marin Alsop! The others may have joined university music schools, etc
Wonder how many young conductors had a latter appointment with Maestro.
He was a master musician and composer.
What a god
Bernstein would be in big trouble these days, with all his touching.
For sure.
Jeffrey’s lesson is in Maestro!
Did Jeffrey make it as a conductor? I googled his name but all I got was references of a whole different guy..
15:15 what the heck was that?
Despair over seriously unmanageable hair? :)
I'd believe it.
21:20:until the end…. waow! ❤
What piece is it?
First Movement of Sibelius 5th Symphony. I believe.
Gold
what piece are they playing at 3:44 ?!
Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 6: Finale.
What piece is he conducting at the end of the video?
First movement of Sibelius 5th Symphony
He sure is... touchy.
which four, do you know?
Wow, that behaviour around 3:00 is completely unacceptable.... awkard. And I'm not even woke
Cigarettes are not good for you kids !! Smoke less or don’t smoke at all!
L.Bernstein was outlived by his mum.
@MorganHayes_Composer.Pianist I had not realized that fact. 👀
Thank you for sharing.
can’t help notice he prob had lung cancer here
@@cathynewyork7918yes. His voice doesn't sounds ok. As well as the way he breaths...
@@cathynewyork7918 But we can see his love for music until the very end. This is a characteristic of all great geniuses in all types of arts. They want to leave more works done.
Cigarette always there! Awful ! What a talent !
isn't conducting like coaching Ethiopian runners
lol
Gravitas.
Only 1 out of the group achieved anything. That's not good. And Bernstein died a year later.
And she's nothing special.
The rest weren't up to much.
That Jeffrey character in particular.
@@bigbong620 i think Bernstein mostly picked the good looking males bc he's gay, regardless of merit.
She isn’t? Her career would say something different.
@@RyanReskyTrumpeter
I wouldn't read too much into that.
There are a lot of mediocre conductors around.
@@bigbong620why do you dislike her so?
