The Young Frank Sinatra | Musical Treasures Ep. 4
"Nancy (With The Laughing Face)" recorded by Frank Sinatra in 1944.
Music by James Van Heusen
Lyrics by Phil Silvers
Musical Treasures | Episode 4
Thank you so much for stopping by the channel.
This song is a little out of my comfort zone, but I tried it anyway. I hope it is not too painful. Please enjoy!
In my music studies, I often come across a song which people couldn't get enough of when it was written. Then, fast forward about 10 years, and nobody even remembers it exists. This is a simple TH-cam series to pay homage to the work of these musicians and ensure their legacy lives on.

Are Cassettes Better Than Digital?

In this video, I take the digital audio playback from MuseScore 4, record it onto a cassette tape, and then record the cassette tape. This music experiment is to test if digital audio can be made to sound more "organic" and "warm" by running it through older audio formats. This is done simply for fun and out of curiosity. And who is this student who constantly tries to speak onto Bernstein advice? Where is he now?
She sold over 25 million copies of this piece, it was very popular. This was former First Lady Florence Harding’s favorite song and she played it often on the piano.
Amazing! Thank you for sharing. Amazing how tastes change.
@@DylanMayMusic Thanks for your reply! The piece has a very interesting history.
Feel free to share what you know on any piece on the channel. I always love when a comment can give further context or someone comes to share their wisdom with the rest of us. Thank you. 🙏
Cannot get enough, Mahler was simply a GENIUS 😍
Lenny is always my favorite 👏👏👏
Wonder how many young conductors had a latter appointment with Maestro.
Can someone explain how irregular chords working?
Gergiev, Bernstein!
I've come to appreciate the process of arriving at a performance via rehearsals, as much as a final, polished performance. This, in both music and drama. Or in Wagner's case, a conscious fusion of them both.
The rehearsal process, especially under the direction of a great speaker and conductor, is magic 🪄
I funnily invented the invisible dynamics trick for myself before watching
It’s incredibly useful! Happy composing.
BERNSTEIN, the Master of tempo! MAHLER, out of this world!
😂
I was in the chorus for this remarkable piece twice. Once with Bernstein at Lincoln Center and again with the San Diego Symphony. This entire work is magnificent. How I would have liked to have know Mahler.
2 Masters.
I got quite nervous when I suddenly couldn't find the Musical Treasures TH-cam channel anywhere. Relieved to find you just changed your name.
🤣 Just a little rebranding, but I hope to keep bringing you ‘musical treasures’. Thanks. 🙏
Great! Thank you
My pleasure. Happy to share!
1:05:41 Cheeky...
🤣 Thank you for noticing.
Thank you!!! ❤
I think one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written.
Absolutely. That main melody is enchanting. I love how Korngold uses lots of mixed meter and irregular timing, but the piece always holds shape. Genius.
Lovely version of the song Interesting that it wasnt written for Sinatra's daughter - in fact the original title was "Bessie with the laughing face" - but i believe the composer changed it when he sang it at one of little Nancy Sinatra's early birthday party and the name change stuck Ps Think the goatee is gonna look great
Actually, the nest to the last Bernstein is the Best!
Ohhh I loveee it bro. Do you have a live full version of those guys performing
Thanks D look forward to devouring this, soon. God bless XxX
No problem! 👍
I wish I could hear the full version of this song

No big deal. Bernstein admits to being a BS in his younger days. By God I loved his BS.
This is great, I hope you will talk about mixing and mastering using AudioCity.
Nice! I love this song and did a cover as well but I don’t sing 😊
I will check it out!
A fine series, very illuminating. I suppose Solti will appear in part 3.
"And to the men of the orchestra." I guess I forget how seldom we saw women in orchestras in the past.
Stuck out to me as well. It’s surprisingly common to hear (even moving into the 80’s). Which is odd because many of these figures painted themselves as progressive activists. Funny to analyze what things they did and didn’t stand up for in their life.
OMG SO TRUE Really nostalgic. I remember being in the car seat next to you listening to these same songs. 🥰
Good song, Dylan. Whenever I hear Bob Dylan, Tom (your middle name) Petty, and Simon and Garfunkel, I think of your mom. Great memories.
Can’t think about them without thinking of her either 😂
How do you know our mom? 😮
I feel like a lived a lifetime of joy and loneliness in 5 minutes. Grainger wrote some criminally underrated music.
Very well put. That is the conclusion I have reached too. Thanks for listening!
Very cool, Dylan. Now I need to watch "Annie Get Your Gun." Oh, by the way, your voice is amazing!
I really appreciate that. Enjoy the movie! 🍿
Grazie per questa preziosissima raccolta!
I wish they did this with John williams rehearsing ep 3 of star wars and hook and et and many others
Totally agree. Though, I think there may be a little behind the scenes disk that comes with the Episode 3 CD!
We played this for our Band Assasment here in NC, and after listening to this, it probably is one of my favorite songs we played. To quote my band director, "There won't be any other band on stage that is playing a much more mature piece than this."
Very cool! It’s quite a piece.
I missed seeing Gustavo Dudamel and Claudio Abbado performances, but I’m happy to be introduced to others in this compilation. Well done!
How much faster should "Was du geschlagen" be compared with what goes before and after? In some of these the speed difference is jarring with this sudden rush then sudden slowdown after. In others the transitions are much more smooth.
Not sure if Maestro Bartley is a baseball fan, but I get a kick on how he signaled the big downbeat on "Sterben werd'ich, um ze leben!" like he's swinging a bat, lol.
What an interesting idea. To the elderly ears of someone like me who grew up in the analogue era, the cassette version _does_ sound warmer and more realistic.
So happy you enjoyed! I definitely was pleased with the results from cassette. Thank you 🙏
Thank you!!! 🥰
You’re welcome!!!
It's not stupid at all! It's really informative.
😆 I am happy to hear you say that. Sometimes, in the moment of recording, it is hard to tell if the idea will resonate. Certainly was a fun project. Thank you for watching!
"If I'm wrong, tell me, and oh, by the way, I'm never wrong."
What a lovely song I had never heard it so it was a pleasure to experience it Reminiscent of your friend Percy G as well as having the essence of the simple poetry of Stephen Foster - Another sadly forgotten American artist - i love the sincerity of his folk lieder
If James was about to have a heart attack, it was probably because he was looking like quite a mess by the late 70s. That photo's rough when you consider what he looked like 7 or 8 years earlier.
❤❤❤
Berlin was a deceptively "simple" composer and this is one of my favorite songs from possibly his best score - I also love I Got Lost in his Arms - Berlin was never better than when writing torch songs with a gentle ache about them (who can forget Rosemary Clooney caressing Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me? In White Christmas)? Moonshine Lullaby is musical perfection - the gentle rocking rhythm of the train tracks underneath, the sweet tenderness of the tune, the blue notes reminding you of the period of the shows' composition - and when the backup guys come in on the chorus it's pure bliss. Lovely to hear you sing and play it so sweetly I'm reminded of seeing Bernedette Peters sing it in the Broadway revival (actually saw it twice) creating magic by sitting quietly, surrounded by sleeping babes in the moonlight - A song so perfectly matched with the vulnerable, slightly bruised sweetness of her voice.
