I agree !! I love the creative process… to be able to see what goes into building a beautiful final performance is really amazing !!! I love hearing him talk through it. Dudamel is brilliant!
I agree a lot, it's interesting to see how differences are between orchestras rehearsing depending on the conductor, so entertaining and fun at times :)
This is great! Please post more excerpts from the orchestra rehearsals. Fascinating to see and hear the process. And it was great to see that even the Maestro makes a mistake when he cued (and he acknowledged the mistake in the rehearsal) the trombone gliss early. This is not a criticism at all; he is human like the rest of us. Please post more. I am a HUGE Dudamel fan!
He did play it differently and followed the current pattern... but yes, when it comes to primo brass excerpts/features in orchestral reps.. we know what to do. This is one of those hilarious lines all my Trombone buddies were always hoping to play one day in a professional group.
That is not superhuman. You just want him to be….some psychological need. A completely anachronic view of conductors. 90% of them nowadays are mediocre cheaters. Dudamel is not, of course, but SUPERHUMAN….?
Dudamel is still the most charismatic and to watch him in a rehearsal is more fascinating than in a concert 🎵 preparing Beethoven or Stravinsky he’s Amazing even with such gray hairs ⭐️
To use a sports analogy, the conductor is like the “head coach” of the orchestra. He may not be doing the actual playing but he has an enormous impact on the outcome of the game (concert).
The musicians have to do their best to play with everything they’ve got, but they are playing to the conductor’s will and interpretation - that decides so much in the end
He was only 26 when he became the LA Phil Director. It has been a tremendous honor and pleasure to see the work and ground breaking programs he's brought to LA. NY Phil is very fortunate and he will be hard to replace.
We had Karajan, we had sleepy feet. Dudamel is crazy, but Dudamel is music in the flesh. This conductor cannot be anything other than what he is. And when he conducts a polyrhythm it tears him into a thousand pieces. Then it flows together again and continues with a largo. Then he goes for a beer and is happy! That is music. Warm greetings from Austria, the land of Mozart and not Australia, the land of hopping kangaroos.
Wow a real personality. Classical music needs people like this. We need to keep this art alive for the next generation and this guy will hopefully be helping. Bravo!
Dudamel's strong point will always be conducting orchestras of teenage musicians. It's amazing how the orchestra changes when he asks them to play as if they were sixteen years old.
This is awesome. As someone who has sung with symphony orchestras, the public rarely gets to see what a rehearsal is like. Thanks for sharing this. Dudamel is so dynamic. What a complete thrill it would be to be on stage with him.
it makes me miss orchestral rehearsals. Granted, I was never in a professional orchestra, but this is how they all go. Technical rehearsals, conductor stories, the whole bit.
Just watching Dudamel, I don't need the score; I can see how every part comes together, and I can very clearly get my cues! A good conductor precludes the musician's need for written music
Seeing Dudamel has aged so much since the last time I've seen him but his energy and enthusiasm is still there 😢 Honestly The Firebird suite is so magical in how it can summon every drop of energy from the musicians
This video is so gorgeous! I understand nothing about philarmonic and that orchestra's world, but Mr. Dudamel sounds me like a magician, a wizard of the baton. His work is fun at the same time his aura is so strong and impressive. Thank you for post this video. I would like to see more rehearsal videos. At last, I'm Brazilian, so proud about the fact by Mr. Dudamel is latin american, from Venezuela.
Wonderful insight into his process at 2:58 seems to really bring it back to some of the excitement and his roots helping to bring back excitement for music into the symphony Orchestra
OLA! I have seen many conductors in rehearses, this is one of the best regarding giving inspirasion with a smile. Not many did and does that….for orchestra it must be like beeing in the sun..
How can I put this … during my Piano tuning days at Concert halls I always stayed on for rehearsals which I enjoyed as much as the compleat concert on the night, if not more !
Mesmerized by Dudamel and the LA Philharmonic! I love all the rehearsal videos. Can we get more camera time for the phenomenal musicians though? Their skill is captivating!
Me encanta, siempre lo he admirado, es mi favorito y les diré que no es fácil dirigir una orquesta sinfónica, desde que lo conocí Gustavo Dudamel me a encantado por q tiene un talento enorme❤
What a pleasure to watch this! . Gustavol has a great personality, & must be lots of fun to work with him..... Love The Firebird!! .... Great orchestra.... Thanks for posting this. 🙏😄
I could watch Dudamel all day. He is so incredibly inspiring and I love how he can bring even professionals who have become cynical to reconnect with the vitality of music.
Oh my goodness I could watch this all day! Such a pleasure to see and hear the Maestro in rehearsal. Love his kindness and obvious joy! I'm so happy to know this is his personality. Please post more!! ❤
Oh man, this is so inspirational.... It must be so much fun to be able to play like that in such a wonderful orchestra with such an inspirational conductor and nothing but masters of musicians all around you. It looks like very much fun, and it possibly is, but this is a hell of a piece to play! Upmost respect for everybody in this video! I love how Dudamel gives a thumbs up every time a section nails a passage, like the Trombone glisando's! This was such an enjoyable video to watch and listen! More of this please!
This work needs to be released on CD not on a streaming service please. By watching and listening I was hearing all sorts of things I have never heard in the Rites before, like the violas playing pizzicato. The recording technique was perfect. Thank you, LA Phil.
By Rites, I assume you mean Rite, by which you’d mean the Rite of Spring, all of which is not this piece. Hahaha I’m joking of course, I love me any Stravinsky. :) have an awesome day.
This is soooo much better than a concert. I’d buy a ticket to every rehearsal!
You actually can at many orchestras, I watched San Francisco symphony rehearse Beethoven 9 it was awesomeeeee
I agree !! I love the creative process… to be able to see what goes into building a beautiful final performance is really amazing !!! I love hearing him talk through it. Dudamel is brilliant!
Me too!!! Used to play in orchestras (violin).... ADORE the rehearsal and creative process!
I agree a lot, it's interesting to see how differences are between orchestras rehearsing depending on the conductor, so entertaining and fun at times :)
I agree too, and even in this short film he makes dynamics and dramatic sounds. OMG..

Agreed, seeing the process is so enlightening!
Agreed Maestro Tipton!
Yes! Excellent to see his interaction language & expression with them!
He was in Houston, and I live in Houston 39years
Me, too! I love the rehearsals. I love to watch Dudamel rehearse.
It is such a pleasure to see how much joy Dudamel displays while experiencing the music. And the music itself, so moving!

How can you not love this guy?
🤔
Even Dudamel is human! The apology after the mis-cue... great to see. This is why I love rehearsal footage
"Grazioso! GRAZIOSO!!!" Love it!
Gustavo is the best.
I love how his nose isn't stuck in the score and his conducting is both fun to watch and easy to follow
You can hear the section learning what he wants. No reacting to each phrase, but everything in a smooth arc. OUTSTANDING 🏆🏆🏆🏆♥️
Gustavo es un director increíble, orgullo que sea latino

It's wonderful to hear the difference he made in just one small section. Conductors really shape how their interpretations sound!
Who couldn’t love a conductor who calls his orchestra My Dears. ❤
Actually that phrase is stolen from Stravinsky himself who used it liberally when taking rehearsals of his own music.

How lucky is the LA Philharmonic orchestra to have this energetic young Maestro at the helm
How odd is it to call 42 year old "young". People seem to be convinced that conductors have an average age of 85.
