    My first and only John Deere to date was a new 318 bought in 1987. Today the engine finally gave up the ghost. After a brief mourning period, I've been searching for a replacement and I think you have showed me the way with this video! Liked and subscribed! One question left, what's involved in installing and removing the deck? It had become something of a pain for the 318. Great video. Glad I found you!

    • @WesternEquipment

      Sad to hear your 318 kicked the bucket. Those were GREAT mowers! I'm glad I could help you with your decision on a replacement though. @@WesternEquipment Now I find the challenge here in upstate NY is that the s180 is nowhere to be had. Checked all Lowe's and JD dealers within reach but all are out of stock with no idea about timeframes for getting more. I really want/need the larger deck, but not for thousands more to get a higher series. And the grass is growing fast! Maybe I should get sheep? Are you hearing anything about a general lack of availability for these machines?

    Question regarding the transaxle…… is this transaxle stronger than the k46? Bc i know that having the k46 with the bigger tires like on the old L120 and L130’s that just having the bigger tires makes that transaxle work harder just to make it move, therefore There were a ton of failures, which led to a K58 retrofit…. Similar to trying to start pedalling on a bicycle on a higher speed than in the low speed.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I misspoke in this video, this is the K46 transaxle. I can say that I have not heard of any failures recently on these transaxles though. I completely understand your concern though. Thanks for watching!

    The deck has grease Zirks. However aren’t they using seal bearings. So there for the grease zirks are there to make you think your greasing it. In all out reality you can grease all you want and your not actually greasing the deck hub bearings.

    • @WesternEquipment

      @@JohnSmith-fy1nh Your right, cheaper to buy the regular filter kit from John Deere & install on first oil change.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The new filter comes with .8 qts. So that does leave 1.2 qts. in the engine but if service is done timely then this has proven to not be an issue so far. The filter is also larger than your standard filter so it is able to collect more contaminants. At any rate this system can always be converted back to a normal drain and filter system.

    Man, that 54" deck is getting old! Its evolved a little bit but looks 85% the same as it did on the G110 and even further back like on the GT, GX, LX and 425/455 tractors. Still the same stamping design.
    Its a shame though that a G110 type tractor didn't continue on with the 100 series over the years. G110s were sweet as they were more or less a GT275 frame underneath it which made for an overbuilt entry level heavy duty tractor.

    great video! Confused here a tad, you state that this S 180 has the very lightweight T200 hydrostat transaxle, the John Deere website specifications for the S 170 and S180 have the slightly stronger K46, however that is still a very lightweight transaxle itself, but much better than the T200. I am a little disappointed at John Deere carrying that lightweight K46 even on several X300 series , with a few of them having the K57 and K58 series which is still a fairly lightweight transaxle! I was researching to buy a replacement mower for my 20 year old John Deere LX188, which has a much stronger K61 transaxle,, seems like John Deere has succumb to the lower quality trend to reach a lower price point. in mid duty mowers,, Apparently the only way to get a good strong transaxle in John Deere is to buy the X500 or X 700 series,, very pricy machines just to use as a designated grass cutter machine.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I misspoke here 🤦🏻‍♂️. It does have the K46 transaxle. Had too many numbers running through my brain...

    • @TechnicalLee
      @TechnicalLee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The T200 and the K46 are basically the same exact thing, if you look at them side by side you wouldn't be able to tell them apart. The 170 and 180 have a lower final drive ratio because of the larger wheels but otherwise everything else is the same as the smaller models. Yes, transmissions are a major cost cutting area for manufacturers, they are just strong enough to get the job done and last the 120 hour warranty period. I change the fluid in mine every 100 hours since they are being worked hard.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question. I have never actually ran a snow blower on a 100 series, but from everything that I have read and have been told is the 300 series is the way to go for snow removal equipment.

      I have the E180 (last years model) which is the same as the 170 just with a larger belly mower. It has been thru its first snow season in Michigan and handled it fine.
      I throw four residential driveways for myself and neighbors. Not a real snow heavy season so maybe sixteen total driveway cleanings, 100' each. I don't go out unless it's five or six inches of snow fall. Had a good one in January, 10"+ of dry snow. Struggled with the road commission plow that was dry packed 20+" but got it done.
      I feel it's worth it. Had the 2000 model with the single stage thrower and while time marches on and they do not built um like they used to I think it will be solid for maybe just as long.

    • @TechnicalLee
      @TechnicalLee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WesternEquipment I have the E170 with the blower and it's a beast. The blower itself is just as good at the X300 one (basically it's the same core design). Traction is the only issue with the lighter mower, but I put on snowblower tires and weights and it works great. Also get the electric lift kit, makes it super easy to use. The 160+ models are also slightly more powerful than the X300 engines which is another benefit for blowing snow. Not sure why so many dealers think you need a X300+ to blow snow, the 100's do it just fine for less money.

    • @WesternEquipment
      @WesternEquipment  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the Filter comes with .8 qts. So that does leave 1.2 qts. in the engine but if service is done timely then this has proven to not be an issue so far. The filter is also larger than your standard filter so it is able to collect more contaminants. At any rate this system can always be converted back to a normal drain and filter system.
