Aeternak I’m in no way shape or form a medical anything but from my 1 year in human studies in 8th grade I believe there is a very large chance of hitting your carotid artery and bleeding out to death. you can also cut in the wrong spot and somehow puncture your airway in a way where you can’t breathe (again i’m not a doctor.) also there is a chance of cutting your vocal cords.

    • @katcel16

The carotid artery is near the sides, trachea is in the middle
Still, not worth trying yourself (unless like you’re certain you’re going to die before help gets there if you don’t do anything, I guess, cause then it’s death or high risk of death, but even then I wouldn’t recommend doing it on yourself before like someone tries the Heimlich)

I'm an orthopedic nurse. Guy came in, had a total knee replacement. Came back two weeks later with a massive infection in the incision. Said he'd been letting his dogs lick it because dog saliva was "healing." Oy. I think he had a couple of surgeries to get rid of the infection and a massive number of IV antibiotics. Not the sharpest tool in the toolbox.

@@IDvfy My comment at least is less about stupidity and more about how paying crazy prices for emergency care can ruin or at least totally fuck up your future! My dad is a (non-American) genius on paper, but very stupid when it comes to thinking he's smarter than doctors. I'd hate to have to choose between something free that might work, and something that'll cost twice my yearly income and still has a chance it could go wrong. I think the percentage of stupid people levels out no matter where you are, but with there being SO MANY WAYS to be stupid it's probably a majority in every country on earth.

My great grandmother would give her kids a spoonful of vicks vapo rub when they were sick too. My grandpa told me a story of one instance of this dosing.
All seven of the kids were running around the house playing. My great grandmother would hide behind a corner and grab the kids one by one as they ran past to shove a spoonful of vicks in their mouth.
Well, two of the kids were identical twins, and one of them was unlucky enough to get snatched up two times, and she didnt believe him when he said he'd already got one.

I do all my own minor surgeries, but something like staples like ... wow get a professional to do it. Also at least have some medical training first and have an understanding of what causes an infection, and how to identify one. If you get an infection, go to the hospital immediately as you're not a doctor, and no, you don't know better.

  • @MilkT0ast

    Obligatory not a doctor but:
I have twice now removed my own ingrown toe-nail.
I had to soak the nail in water. Then took a pairs of needle nose pliers and a Shun Japanese chef knife and cut the down the side of the length of the nail.
It was painful to say the least.
1st time worked but only temporarily.
2nd time I did it, I placed a plastic wedge under my nail so it will grow over it and not dig into the skin.
It worked, kinda. The wedge was fused into my skin after a couple months. And then when I finally went to a doctor, he removed it and said "Even though your methods some what ended up working. I really do not recommend you do surgery on yourself."
So even though I ended DIY'ing and fixing the pain. My toenail now looks like a rotting piece of wood.

I work in an ER; years ago we'd have a man come in for venomous snake bites...and he was allergic to antivenom. He'd already lost a leg somewhere along the way. Saw him 3-4 times over 6-8 months. Then one day ambulance brings him to us in cardiac arrest. I found it hard to really care that he died. Still don't. He was an idiot.
I see a lot of people with chronic conditions like diabetes or congestive heart failure come into the ER because they are noncompliant with their doctor's orders/meds. Gets under my skin we *have* to treat them (especially the ones we see repeatedly, for the same damn problem that has a solution) because those people are taking up time, space, and resources we could be using on truly sick or injured patients.
Recently, a man came in for gangrene. One finger on each hand was half rotten away - like from the tip to halfway down the second knuckle looked like a 4-month-old body found out in the woods. All of his toes were already gone. I think he was diabetic? I don't know what happened to this man, but I do hope everything went well for him. Patients like him make me stop and ask 'Why/how do you let it get that bad??' Still don't have a good answer.
UPDATE: gangrene guy panicked right before the surgery to remove his rotted fingers, but ending up going through. He was discharged and I hope he heals well, he was a nice guy.

People like that are what cause people like me to have a bad time, too. I suffer Fibromyalgia, a knee problem that honestly causes my kneecaps to slide left and right (I'm getting an MRI on that soon, but it was my fault as a teenager, I was doing 30 down a sidewalk on a moped and biffed it, landed on the left knee first,) Plantar Fachiitis and both knees are screwed up due to the aforementioned, a botched knee surgery on the left (He cleaned up the meniscus but put down he did a few other things when he didn't and tore the meniscus further,) and because of babying that knee, I screwed up the right. Needless to say, I am in full body pain, 24/7. And when I go in, cause I'm at my wits end with pain and want something to help, I either get the "You're a pain pill addict," or "I don't believe in Fibromyalgia, you're faking it."
I take pain pills, sure. But I only take what I am given and do my damnest to stretch them out over a month and only take them when I am near crying. I'm anything but addicted to these and it pisses me off that I ask for some help or to see if it's a new pain (A lot of the times, I get phantom pains somewhere else, than what I'm used to,) or a torn ligament, sprain, etc... and I don't know if it's my FM or not. It really bothers me the ER docs in the past assume I'm there to feed my addiction or I'm there for attention.

    • @TheSchultinator
      @TheSchultinator 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@BeckyNosferatu I'm sorry to hear that you have trouble in the ER. I really wish there was a better way for us to categorize patients so we knew who truly needs more attention (like you) and who's just being a leech.
Actually, I'd settle for being able to call out the leeches to their faces!

    • @BeckyNosferatu
      @BeckyNosferatu 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@TheSchultinator I would do it too, if it helped our cases. lol I hate seeing people who are addicted to something and refuse to get help for it. @@BeckyNosferatu I have fm too on top of degenerative disc disease and about 3 other chronic pain conditions but can't afford healthcare and every time I go to the ER for severe abdominal pain (I have polycystic ovary syndrome) I get that whole "you have a bunch of cysts, I won't treat you for pain, go to the obgyn." thing. They seriously treat pain patients like shit no matter what as far as I can see. I'm not even on any pain medications besides about 1200mg of ibuprofen 2x a day or I'd go mad.

I once found a lump on my leg, my mom claimed it was an ingrown hair and attempted to pop it. When we FINALLY went to the doctors she said it was nothing but don’t attempt to drain it again. Few days later due to the opening from the attempted popping, it gets infected and starts turning red and hurts like hell.
I had to beg my mom to take me to the duty doctor, I hate complaining and begging, but I was in so much pain. Turns out thanks to my mom’s diy attempt it turned into cellulitis. Which is a very painful infection that can turn flesh eating if not treated. We caught it just in time and after a few weeks on meds it healed. I’m still stuck with a dark and ugly bruise it left behind, and that was a year ago.

Liquid Lysol was recommended for vaginal infections years ago, but it wasn't full strength even then. It was diluted like one tablespoon per gallon of warm water, and only for sitz baths, not for douches. And it wasn't the spray. Times have changed, thank God. My first child is 45 now, it was recommended for me after her birth. To be fair, my OB was East Indian. Maybe that had something to do with it??

you can use sugar to trean some wounds, like salt but doesn't burn. we do it in 3rd world countries, but not syrup

Honey is a better alternative to antibiotic ointment. Not sugar. It's highly effective as an ointment too, for burns, and cuts and even good for fighting MRSA. Organic raw unfiltered honey works best.

Some of the happenings in the video sound a LOT like the free clinic stories in House, M.D.
    The DIY circumcision for one...

Some of them may be copied from the show, but keep in mind that ALL medical shows get their ideas from real life medical instances that the writers find in their research. If a news site writes an article about a generally unheard of medical phenomena tomorrow, in two months one of those medical shows will have an episode about it.

One time my friend was jumping on his trampoline and he bit his tongue so hard that his teeth connected through his tongue he went inside pale faced and his grandpa (who was a nurse for over 20 years) stitched that little piece of tongue back on he is perfectly fine now. Just some really bad ww2 type shit flashbacks.

Comments like this keep reminding me of long buried childhood memories like the time I tied a bathrobe rope to my bunk bed and plagued on it (the bunk bed had small stairs on the side instead of a ladder) and when I did a flip on the bathrobe rope and hit my chin on the stairs hard enough for my teeth to bite through my tongue, not hard enough to go all the way through, but hard enough for my tongue to bleed
