So let me get this straight the previous owner not only overfed him to the point to where he can barley walk. But then dumped him on the streets in Arizona in summer!? That pisses me off so much.

I wonder if a relative or friend of the owner stole and dumped him? Sometimes people don't like what the owner is doing and can't convince them to change. They might have figured this was the only way the dog could get the help it needed. You just never know.

I have one that steals from all the other dogs and is 35#.. I barely even feed her. They can be a challenge to maintain their weight, but sometime way before 90# or even 40# they should have figured out he was losing quality of life and figured out a way to turn it around. Sadly, it does happen. Maybe 15 years ago, I was driving with my boyfriend a couple miles outside our city limits in a pretty rural area. We suddenly see a dog jump out of some trees and start running down the road. We slow down and get closer, and bf says "That looks like [his friend's] dog." Bf got out of the car and walked over to the dog. Bf just looked over at me, bent down to grab the collar, and walked back to the car with the dog. He opens the door and just says "Yeah, this is Max. That's his collar. [Friend] took the tags off but it's definitely him."
Unfortunately, before we could get the dog in the car, he bolted straight into some dense woods. There was no way we could go after him. So we stood on the side of the road yelling his name, hoping he'd come back. No luck. It was now nighttime and we couldn't see anything.
So we called Animal Control and left a message with the SPCA and told them that a boxer/pit mix was running around the area, that he's friendly but he may give chase. To this day I have no idea what happened to him, if he was ever found. I like to think he was caught and taken to the shelter, and was later adopted by a young family who would love his energy.
I remember feeling sick to my stomach. I kept asking "Why would he do that, just dump a dog in the country? Why wouldn't he take it to a shelter?" Bf just said "He's been talking about getting rid of the dog for a while, I just didn't think he'd do this. He lives too far away for the dog to get here on his own so quickly."
To be fair, the dog was a lot to handle. He was 2yo, super hyper and jumpy, and didn't respond to commands. It wasn't the dog that guy needed. But if he just took it to a shelter (they're all no-kill in the area), that dog would have had a new home in no time.

It’s definitely something to do with the fact that this breed loves to eat until they pop. The owner has to have the discipline to make sure they are keeping the dog active and not overfeeding. My Beagles might be a quarter mile away, but I always knew where they were, because I could hear them howling. I would walk 5 miles on the Reservoir trails & they would walk & run 5X's that distance. They followed every scent in the woods. Beagles are relentless hunters. Like my Huskies today, people love to hear them howl. Most people!?
