Because Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker were two separate people when this movie came out, it was only in the second version of the script for The Empire Strikes Back that Darth Vader and Anakin Skywalker became the same person
Yes, it was only after the success of the classic that George Lucas decided to add the plot twist in the sequel. He was able to do it without contradicting any of the material from the classic.
@@jwork5680 Originally, Luke's sister and Leia were two different people, but George Lucas changed that while writing Return of The Jedi, because originally Sister Luke was supposed to appear in Episode 7, and the Emperor was supposed to be defeated in Episode 9
That's just it. If he had given into his emotions he may not have had the lightside clout to become a jedi ghost. In this fight Kenobi "wins" by becoming one with the force, and giving Luke more time before he has to confront Vader.
Such a tragical scene…. The master not fully understanding of his roll as a teacher, forced into a roll that he wasn’t prepared for and not fully trained. A young rebellious man … explosive emotion and uncontrollable anger and passion…. No true guidance that failed him to his ultimate destiny… Such a shame and broken story
In the Obi-Wan Kenobi show when Obi-Wan calls Darth Anakin Darth says “Anakin is gone, I am what remains.” So that’s another reason why Obi-Wan didn’t call him Anakin.
When obi wan meets Luke he tells him his fathers name was anakin. In episode 5 the emperor calls Luke the son of anakin skywalker. In episode 6 Luke calls Vader anakin. His name was always anakin. We just didn’t know it was Darth til episode 5
…also, A New Hope was the first movie in the franchise, so I doubt any of the Lore we all take for granted was even conceived at this point. In fact, A New Hope wasn’t even called that at the time… it was simply Star Wars!
This one of my favourite things about Star Wars they don’t like retconning stuff and they just come up with explanations for things that were semi thought out ❤
It's probably only a fortunate accident, but the way Alec Guiness said "Darth" sounds derisive and almost mocking. That works in the context established by the prequels.
@HoJeanJeon What plot?? How Vader was supposed to be at his most powerful point ever but still took another L?? They ruined canon for an embarrassment like that?
I have another in-universe theory that’s from the kenobi show : the last thing obi wan says to anakin/vader when he understood that anakin was gone was « goodbye, Darth » so since then he knew there was no more anakin left
Also in the show at the final battle between Vader and Obi wan at end, Obi wan said “Goodbye darth” I think at that moment Obi wan saw that in his eyes Anakin was far from redemption
If he called him Anakin, it would have only brought more questions and mystery to the plot. It's not like they would have suddenly been all "Oh its Anakin from the prequels that haven't been made yet!"
Because I’m his eyes that is not anakin is a much simpler and realistic explanation compared to it would make me cry and I will lose even though I don’t intend to win
At the time that film was made, George Lucas was even sure Empire Strikes Back would be made, so it's fair to assume, Obi Wan (Alan) didn't know at that time who was under that helmet.
It’s so sad what happened to Anakin and Obi Wan’s relationship. The fight on Mustafar always makes me a bit emotional, because they really were brothers.
*Obi-Wan* Hello there. *Vader* General Kenobi, you are a bold one. *Obi-Wan* How are you Anakin ? *Vader* Now I am Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker is gone ! And I am the Master now ! *Obi-Wan* You may be a Sith Lord, but I don't grant you the rank of Master. *Vader* Not this sh*t again...
It's incredible how well acted Alec Guinness acted out a story that was being written. Obi Wan Kenobi was an equally tragic character as Anakin Skywalker. The losses he faced are staggering and a testament to his mental toughness. Obi Wan was a true warrior and...a good friend.❤
Yep. Thank god his originally name wasn't Billy Vader, lol. Just imagine if Billy became the new Darth. My personal favourite would have been Billy Bane.
In the show (Obi-wan) they fight and he tells obi-wan “anakin is dead I am what remains” and “you did not kill Anakin I did” and when Obi-wan is leaving he calls him Darth no longer calling him Anakin
I think too the real reason was because either George didn’t fully plan out yet if Vader’s identity was actually Anakin, or George didn’t want us to know it yet.
The real reason is that George didn’t have that in the script until a last minute rewrite of the empire strikes back so technically at that point he “WASN’T” anakin and ACTUALLY LITERALLY killed and luke wasn’t leias brother he was just a guy lol
When they met in Episode 4, what happened in Mustafar had not happened yet, so there's no way he could remember it. I know it's hard to understand this, but this is a work of fiction that was created on the go, little by little as the authors got inspired at each specific installment.
And this ladies and gentlemen, was their first and last meeting/fight ever since ROTS! Do not let that garbage of a fanfiction (the obi wan show) tell you otherwise. After decades the ultimate climax happened on the death star
It's because the fans made "Darth" a title instead of his name. Lucas liked this idea and rolled with it. Kinda like lightsabers. It was always going to be just blue and red. When filming in Tunisia, he realised you couldn't really see the light saber against the brilliant blue sky, so he made it green. The fans did the rest and Lucas respected this. Shame that KK didn't.

Damn, I totally heard this in Vader's tone in my mind. Exactly what he would say.

@Romanchelli he literally says it in Return of the Jedi.
And George Lucas specifically told Obi-Wan to avoid spoilers.
That and the fact that George didn't think of Anakin's name at the time

The real reason that Lucas did not know what will be the original name of Vader yet.
It's incredible how well acted Alec Guinness acted out a story that was being written. Obi Wan Kenobi was an equally tragic character as Anakin Skywalker. The losses he faced are staggering and a testament to his mental toughness. Obi Wan was a true warrior and...a good friend.❤
Because Darth was supposed to be a first name before they retconned Vader in TESB.
Yep. Thank god his originally name wasn't Billy Vader, lol. Just imagine if Billy became the new Darth. My personal favourite would have been Billy Bane.
and luke was standing like 25 feet away trying to board the falcon to escape he didn’t want luke to know the big secret either
He also probably thought of Darth Vader being his full name rather than Darth being a title for a sith.
And to avoid giving spoilers (but I guess the ‘I am your father’ kinda of negates that but we never heard his first name
Now we also have the kenobi series (sorry for the name) he calls anakin Darth after beating him and that takes place before this
This is where the kenobi series actually helped the scene
I swear they always find excuses for certain things in the OG
Retcon, the reason he calls him Darth is because his name is Darth Vader, it was his name not a title.
In the show (Obi-wan) they fight and he tells obi-wan “anakin is dead I am what remains” and “you did not kill Anakin I did” and when Obi-wan is leaving he calls him Darth no longer calling him Anakin
@tysonhogan7710 Yeah, that fight was embarrassing to watch. It's not canon, just another complete failure by Disney.
You should make a video on who the first apprentice was to yoda
I think too the real reason was because either George didn’t fully plan out yet if Vader’s identity was actually Anakin, or George didn’t want us to know it yet.
Also now with kenobi it made sense
Goodbye darth
Letting go of who he once was and giving up trying to help
Plus anakin didn’t exist in 1977, wasn’t mentioned until ROTJ
Pretty sure that scene from the Kenobi series is the reason why he didn't call Vader "Anakin"
To me, I always thought that he refused to call Vader by his real name because he no longer considered him Anakin.
The real reason is that George didn’t have that in the script until a last minute rewrite of the empire strikes back so technically at that point he “WASN’T” anakin and ACTUALLY LITERALLY killed and luke wasn’t leias brother he was just a guy lol
The Kenobi series explained that well.
The real reason is George was making it up as he went along,he didn't know how Vader was yet.
because it hurt him too much...
Kenobi:”I also did not know he was Anakin at the time…because when this movie came out, what I told Luke about him was absolutely true”
Because the script said Darth and Alec Guinness knew nothing about the rest of the story
When New Hope was released originally Lucas hadn’t even decided on the name Anakin Skywalker yet…
When they met in Episode 4, what happened in Mustafar had not happened yet, so there's no way he could remember it.
I know it's hard to understand this, but this is a work of fiction that was created on the go, little by little as the authors got inspired at each specific installment.
Only affect his chances of winning a fight that he lost… I think those dual suns burnt up some of his brain… or maybe it was that “save leia” retcon.
Because it would reveal the father plot point early
Well it kinda would have given away the biggest plot twist in movie history. I mean Luke still wouldn’t have known but the audience would have.
Kenobi pretty much gives the explanation.
Because George Lucas didn't use Anakin as a name until 1983!
Well that and when a new hope was written, Anakin and Darth Vader were intended to be two separate characters.
The real reason is because it would of spoiled who Vader was to the viewer, simple and plain.
Maybe because a new hope was made before the prequels, thus this plot, especially the battle on Mustafar hadn't happened yet?
And this ladies and gentlemen, was their first and last meeting/fight ever since ROTS! Do not let that garbage of a fanfiction (the obi wan show) tell you otherwise. After decades the ultimate climax happened on the death star
No it was basically explained in kenobi. Anakin eont turn back and obi wans friend "is truly dead" meaning anakin. So he calls him darth
Quick answer because it was filmed in the 70s the charecter anakin wasn’t existent Intill the 90s
Because hadn’t make up the Anakin-is-actually-Vader thing yet.
because he don't consider him his friend anymore
Oohhh Anakinn...
Definitely the worst lightsaber fight in Star Wars history 😂
Because of plot armor because it would defeat the shock in empire strikes back
or maybe because it was the first movie and they couldn't immediately tell that he was anakin
Though,he still died -_-
Hurt his chances of winning? wtf? He gave himself up anyway
Yeah, nevermind that he called him Anakin several times in the Obi-Wan series.
Because Empire hadn't come out yet.
This is beautifully explained in the Kenobi series…end of discussion…
He didn't want to win that fight.
