  • BBC Proms 2017 - Prom 53: Beneath the Underdog: Charles Mingus Revisited
Following their sell-out 2016 Quincy Jones Prom, Jules Buckley and his Metropole Orkest return to celebrate the legendary composer, bandleader and bass player Charles Mingus, featuring artists Shabaka Hutchings, Christian Scott and Kandace Springs.
    -
A giant of jazz, Charles Mingus (1922-79) combined the classic style of Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton with the radical spirit of black music of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and has influenced artists from Joni Mitchell and Elvis Costello to Debbie Harry.
Following sell-out Quincy Jones and Jamie Cullum Proms last year, Jules Buckley returns - with his Metropole Orkest - to celebrate the life and music of this legendary composer, bandleader and bass-player. The Prom features Mingus favourites including ‘Better Git It in Your Soul’, ‘Moanin’’ and ‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat’, performed by a starry line-up of artists.
    -
    Featuring:
    Shabaka Hutchings - saxophones
Leo Pellegrino (Leo P) - baritone saxophone
    Christian Scott - trumpet
    Bart van Lier - trombone
    Kandace Springs - singer
    Metropole Orkest
    Jules Buckley - conductor
    -
Broadcast on BBC Four, 25 August 2017
    -

I like this commemt because not alot of people give enough credit to the drummer of a concert because they, along with the bass line, are responsible for keeping the tempo so the performers are in time. Without them, everyone would have to rely too heavily on the conductor and look at their music a lot less.

Charles Mingus is my favorite jazz musician. Hands down. Favorite bandleader, favorite composer. It's all there. Favorite bassist. I mean he made his compositions nice and bass centered rather than piano centered (thanks to his sympatico pianists) so that not only could the bass breathe but then the horns were breathing too. And Dannie Richmond, his lifelong best friend, was equally deferential as a drummer to his bass playing and that's tough to see in a music where usually when a bass solo occurs the drummer has to back out as much as possible just so you can hear it. Mingus's 1964 and Changes bands are my favorites.

Fire !!! I'm in love with this ensemble . Great instrumentalist . Passion is shown and expressed so fluidly it's beauty in it's raw form . Thank God for Mingus and these beautiful souls .

These are the best solo parts in my opinion, these are here for kind of a timecode index but mainly just for me to quickly get to them while I’m listening:
    *GUNSLINGING BIRD*
    Bart Vanlier - 58:20
    Leo Pellegrino - 1:00:29
    Martijn Vink - 1:02:44 and 1:03:44
    *O.P. (OSCAR PETTIFORD)*
They never mentioned this guy’s name - 18:14
    Christian Scott - 17:57
    Bart Vanlier - 18:00
*BETTER GIT IT IN YOUR SOUL*
    Leo Pellegrino - 1:52:53
