Er ist ein famoser Bassist. Er kann als Multiinstrumentalist auch Gitarre, Sitar, Percussion und Keyboard spielen und bewegt sich als kreativer Weltenbummler gekonnt zwischen Welt-, Jazz- und Afropop-Musik. Zudem ist Richard Bono, der unter anderem mit Herbie Hancock, Harry Belafonte, dem Buena Vista Social Club, Quincy Jones und Sting zusammenarbeitete, ein kundiger musikalischer Botschafter. „Heritage“, sein Album aus dem Jahr 2016, ist eine Hommage an seine Heimat Kamerun - und eine polyrhythmische Verbeugung vor afrokubanischer Musik.
