I love this tune originally sung by Quebequois singer Fabienne Thibeault in the French show Starmania (1978). "Le monde est stone" is very well known in Quebec and European francophonic countries, and has never left the top most loved songs ever since. Cyndi gives it a beautiful English version. My very good friend Olivier.B died on 12th of July 1992 from free diving alone, we were 17. At that time this song was often on TV and it reminds me this tragic event. He was such a brilliant, smart and kind person. His parents never recovered from this loss. They are now gone too, may they found the rest.Today I listen to this song in his memory. RIP my friend Olivier.B you are still in my heart.

A #2 smash in France in 1992 (a whopping 3 months in the Top 5) and the European Chart's #55 song of the year. It's a shame that grunge and rap (sorry, I like few of those artists) controlled the 90s market in America forcing great musicians off the pop radio stations in favor of music that has not stood the test of time. Cyndi, you are adored by many Americans who love vocal talents, and are adored worldwide! Cyndi won the Tony Award for being the first women to write a Musical Score by herself. What a LEGEND!

It was originally performed by Fabienne Thibeault and released on the Starmania album in 1978. The English-language version of the song with lyrics by Tim Rice, titled "The World Is Stone", was recorded by American singer Cyndi Lauper and released on the Tycoon album in 1992. The original song was extremely sad. It was written by a Canadian and a French singer/composer. The original is called Le monde est stone, as the original song meant the world is so messed up it feels like it is stoned as in not being rational. The rest of the French lyrics are about this woman who feels like hell and is so depressed she just wants to end it.

I remember finding and buying this cd single and it was a UK Import. The CD had only 2 songs on it....." The World Is Stone" and "You Have To Learn To Live Alone". I was so excited I couldn't wait to get home and hear these songs. And of course, she blew me away with these songs I'd never heard.

The French original is not bad either, but Ms Lauper's rendition is just heartbreaking...even more so than the original. By adding the Monroe angle and how she basically died on the altar of movie making and popular culture and marketing: Ms Lauper is IMHO the only one who ever eerily looked like her in make-over and the video/song is such a tribute to her humanity. As the song generally is. Thank you Ms Lauper for this nuance and adding that to the "picture". I had the privelige of seeing and hearing you perfom in Vienna in the Opera a couple of years ago and boy did you impress. An evening I will never forget and that I can highly recommend: if you get the chance to see/hear live, go for it. She never lost the voice and I MEAN it.
