After watching the documentary that came out last night, it makes sense. Michael wrote the song (along with Lionel) that’s why it was easy for him, he played a major part in creating the song. Also y’all gotta realize how hard it is for alot of these artists to sing like this. Watch the documentary and you’ll have a different perspective on this
Yup, MJ and Lionel wrote it and were really comfortable with the notes that needed to be sung. Huey had to adapt and take his voice to a place he wasn't used to. Knew a lot about the song already, but watching the documentary made me appreciate Huey way way more and loved how hard he tried until he got it just perfect.
Well, he did co-write the song with Lionel Richie and worked on the demo with Quincy Jones about a week before the night they asked the rest of the singers to record after the American Music Awards that year. Everyone else had to learn their parts in a matter of hours because they needed to record everything before the next morning since everyone was flying out to resume their own work schedules.

Everything except Bob Dylan and the later part by Ray Charles was recorded before daylight the next day after the American Music Awards. The extra parts were recorded a week after.
@@Sirynx77 oh yeah Ive seen the documentary. Agree. A person like Cyndi has to be Cyndi. Holding back will just make her awkward. She nailed it in the end and I like her part a lot. Full of character

Same here. Even those singers who done with their parts keep encouraging and applauding to others. They didn't put their ego instead showing only professionalism. Love them.
I especially loved the "coaching" from Steve Perry. I mean seriously, if you're gonna take vocal coaching from anyone in that room it definitely should be MJ and Steve Perry, probably the two best vocalists at that time period in the room, well and Stevie Wonder.
Shout out to Lionel Richie for making Cyndi more comfortable with herself. And for suggesting that they sing that last part in harmony. Excellent idea Lionel! Oh and I'm glad the Netflix doc came out. It shows that no one received demos like some idiot lied and said they did. Michael looks disappointed, but thats because he didn't go to the AMAs that were going on. He was practicing by himself all day. Everyone else was at thr awards show. So NO ONE had any preparation before getting there that night. Which makes this show just how talented these people actually were. They had ONE NIGHT to get this done without any prep whatsoever. I said this in my last comment. That you Netflix for proving me right. And after 39 years this coming out, my memory is still better than most people.
No. Huey Lewis, Lauper and that other woman are not perfectionists. Their first takes sounded so awful that they had to sing again and again. A perfectionist tries to make excellent even better. Those people just made bad good.
They're not perfectionists at all. Huey Lewis was so out of tune it was ridiculous. These people are supposed to be singers and yet it took that many takes for him to to actually sing one simple line relatively in tune.
@@david18ireland Huey Lewis is a great singer, but remember, their headphones is what they are hearing and this is an old tape and over YT the pitch may be altered.

I love how professional MJ is. He nails every bit he has to, then in between the takes he just steps back and patiently waits. Ultimate professional and humble and trusts in the others around him to do their part. amazing how they all came up with perfect interpretations almost on the go. Cindy's part is pretty much the climax of the song, a very important and difficult moment.
Yeah! I adore her! I've loved her since she was in her band "Blue Angel" back in 1980. I have their one and only album. And not trying to be rude, but her name is spelled "Cyndi". 😊💖👍
@@Juno_Beach Most entertainers do. 😂 They know their talent then try to pretend they don't. 🙄 It's usually the ones with no talent bragging on themselves. I still liked it though.
It seems as though they absolutely needed it too for the bridge. It’s difficult to imagine the chorus coming in without Cyndi’s high note. The entire beginning of the song is basically “one note” until Cyndi. She did a good job by taking it higher.
And he could've too if he wanted. He had amazing range. I'm scratching my head here, listening to these other three struggle to sing one/two lines on key.
@@paradoxmeld2937 For a nobody I sure do have you bothered. Lol! And the truth still stands: Those other folks in the clip couldn't sing a simple line or two on key. Not only that, some of them couldn't even sing on beat! How are they professional singers and can't even sing a few simple lines on key and on beat? Lmao! That's just bad singing. Period. And don't try to use MJ as a scapegoat. It doesn't matter if a singer's singing next to Michael Jackson or Roseanne Barr. If you're a so-called professional singer, you should be able to sing simple notes on beat with relative ease. Especially if you're singing in a group because the other voices naturally mask a bad note here and there. That's why people who are picked to sing solos (like Michael Jackson in this clip) tend to be the best singers in the group. It's because when singing solos there's no other voices to hide behind. If a soloist sings a bad note (like Cyndi Lauper in this clip), it's more noticable. And I don't even hate Cyndi or the others. I've heard them sing before and they sound alright in their specific genre at times. But this clip just proves that there's a huge difference between "performers" and real, talented singers. This clip shows why MJ is the King of Pop.
This turned out to be the epic part of the song it’s not surprise it took time for them to get it to a point where they said yes it’s a take. These are masters at work
Yeah it's too bad so many people watching this don't get it at all, and prefer to think that they're "embarrassing themselves" in front of a "pissed off" Michael Jackson.
What Cyndi did was outstanding, the way she worked out and improved her solo from take to take, the distinctive phrasing and expression she added, etc. That final take couldn't have been bettered (the little bit she improvised at the very end was just perfection!)
Yea her voice made the song to be honest 👍🏿very professional and cute the way she was telling the other Legend how to exercise her vocals! Then came out with a banger
Tem um documentário na Netflix e ela não queria participar pq a música ñ ia ser sucesso. Foi feito um sorteio entre a Madonna é ela, e o Quincy escolheu ela.
Who is there in 2020? MJ was a legend per everything. Cindy's necklace affected her recording. Lol. I wish all these artistes were still this young and beautiful
MJ is a one take wonder. Dude was pitch perfect in a way that was never seen before or after. Just unbelievable. You can see him waiting around for people to get it together because he knew he could deliver the perfect note every time.
He also didn’t sing in the harmony part they were working out for the bridge. This video documents them rehearsing while they recorded the vocal harmonies. The fact they were able to work that out so quickly just proves how much talent they have. A little direction from Lionel Richie and they nailed it
Prince would have been in another corner and they weren't be able to get one pitch perfect recording from Madonna, so the whole session lasted for another day. Btw I'm sure they both would have been humbled by the situation - maybe that's why they didn't join. They were scared of their own humble self.
@Funk O'Matic Supposedly Prince was gonna have the line that Huey ended up singing. So they would've had Michael, then Prince, then Cyndi, and IMO put Madonna in Kim Carnes' place, and then you would've had the two biggest male pop stars in 1985 sing back to back, then the two biggest female pop stars sing back to back, and then possibly the part with "stand together as one," they could've somehow had MJ, Prince, Cyndi, and Madonna all harmonize together on that part. I mean Madonna at that time wasn't near the vocalist that MJ, Prince, and Cyndi were, but as great of talents as they were they probably could've figured something out to make it sound great. That being said, the harmonizing of Huey, Kim, and Cyndi is one of my favorite parts of the song. So it worked out either way.
I think Prince & Madonna would’ve worked but elsewhere in the song. Kim’s rasp was too vital to the chorus. Maybe Al Jarreau and James Ingram replaced, or Daryl Hall.
These artists were so humble and respectful of one another. It's beautiful to see individuals take advice from their peers without being offended. We could never have this nowadays, with every artist claiming to be some genius of ..., goddess of ..., princess of ..., king of ... queen of ...etc, too much ego with little talent!
Exactly, this is amazing collaboration of amazing artists caring and listening to each other. The same way it would be not possible nowdays to make "One voice one world" which is much more complicated recording
Cindy was practically the youngest in the group yet she was assigned one of the most difficult part of the song. She executed it spectacularly. Lovely and an amazing talent!
Cyndi's "Well, well, well" and "yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" is the most memorable part of this song for me. Interesting to watch it evolve in an organic, improvised manner.
This video is pure authenticity. A rare look into the candid-ness of a group of legends. Theres no way footage like this could ever exist of the artists of today as the music industry is too highly guarded in public image & promotion and many performances are tweaked to perfection without allowing us to see the work going into it. Even live concerts are staged.

As I recall, the song's chorus with the entire group was recorded first. Then majority of the group left when the selected solo parts where selected to record the individual lines. Everything except Bob Dylan and the later part by Ray Charles was recorded before daylight the next day after the American Music Awards. The extra parts were recorded a week after.
@@Sirynx77 oh yeah Ive seen the documentary. And trust me I'm not taking anything away from they're wonderful performances, but as a singer it is very hard to literally sound identical every time like a record player.

They're not perfectionists at all. Huey Lewis was so out of tune it was ridiculous. These people are supposed to be singers and yet it took that many takes for him to to actually sing one simple line relatively in tune.

He also didn’t sing in the harmony part they were working out for the bridge. This video documents them rehearsing while they recorded the vocal harmonies. The fact they were able to work that out so quickly just proves how much talent they have. A little direction from Lionel Richie and they nailed it

MJ so professional in the corner observing the chaos lol,..Cyndi is just a fun so alive person, so glad she was part of this.
Imagine if Whitney Houston had debuted a year earlier and been a big enough star by this time to appear on the song. Holy cow.
Wrong wrong wrong th-cam.com/video/05GRm_6Goyo/w-d-xo.html
