    Wow! I’m so glad you made this vid! The way you explained how to look for the right places has really cleared that question up for me! I don’t think I will ever look at the river the same again! Please keep these informative field trips coming! Thanks Shane!

    I have seen so many videos and posts of people claiming you can't trap gold in black sands when cleaning up paydirt. Nice to see a video showing just how you can trap gold in black sands!

    Good use of intuition! Several comments: 1) magnet fishing in a strong current may cause gold to dislodge from your magnetite "cage". 2) repeated dropping of magnetic onto riverbed might also enable gold to escape the magnetite confinement. Based on these predictions, I recommend you magnet fish in calmer pools, and not lift and drop the magnet repeatedly. In fact, I'd suggest you clear away by hand as much coarse rock and then drop the magnet on piled material. Once you have your concentrates, dry and classify them using a screen close to the gold piece size. 1/16" and 1/8" will improve your gold recovery success. Addituonally, appreciate the density contrast between magnetite and gold is a factor of three. That's a contrast comparable of quartz vs. magnetite. When classified well, you will not lose gold so easily during panning. Lastly, I've used the Blue Bowl with very good success to concentrate gold from black sand. Stay curious and have fun!

    If no one else mentioned it about the magnet, could surface area be your problem? I mean the video I saw first you used that big brick if a magnet and it was pulling piles of sand on the corners. I get that this one is stronger and all but could that be the issue here?

    Nice video. So the idea with the magnet is hoping some gold will get caught up with the black sand? Creative idea, but seems to be a long shot. The magnet does tell you where the gold might be under the water.

    • @Klesh

    This test was a great idea. It's gt me thinking of a controlled test (using the same material). Easier to do with a high banker but maybe a tub under the end of the sluice, to catch the tailings, would allow for that material to be also put in an open top container and be checked with the magnet. The depth of material would just have to be approximately how deep you would go into the sands and gravels on the bottom of a stream.
    I think the light stuff that would blow right on over the tub in the sluice tailings, would be less prevalent at the stream bottom (assuming big water flow like you have there). So I think what you would have for tailings and what's in the mat would be somewhat like what you would be sifting through with the magnet at a stream bottom.
    The advantage being you have a controlled amount of gold and black sands, lead, etc. in each test. Just an idea.

    I liked the way you sped up your first sluice of dirt..fastest sluicing ever! Haha! Wish we had an abundance of gold over here, but there have only been traces of gold in Codorus Creek apparently you can't just go pan, you have to wait until they open it up for gold panning..which isn't very often I don't think. I wish I had my gold pan here..it's still up in Washington. Great video as always man! Keep them coming!

    The underwater footage was awesome! I wonder if it would be possible to make a gold trap somehow out of PVC pipe and a rope. Drop it in the river then return in several weeks and see if it accumulated anything inside. Probably have to cap the end and drill some strategic holes in it. It would be sweet if it worked and very little effort was involved.

    A theory for the reason that you captured more gold with the Harbor Freight magnet than you did with the fishing magnet has to do with gold being diamagnetic (repelled by a magnetic field) and the magnetic field strength differences (gauss) of the magnets. The fishing magnet is probably rated n52 which is very powerful. While this is fine for attracting the black sand (magnetite) it also repels the gold more. The HF magnet is much weaker and while its strong enough to attract the sand it is not as strong at repelling the gold as the n52 magnet. Also the force, thus speed, of the sand traveling towards the fishing magnet would be faster there by displacing water at high speed away from the magnet thus blowing out the gold similar to a sluice when the water is traveling too fast to be caught.

    great concept and well done, would've been interesting to compare the weight of gold verses the time spent. I realize this would take longer so that you had a weighable amount. I would think that the magnet might lose a lot of gold if you continually stir the stuck black sand by pressing it into the ground when there is already some stuck to it. You've inspired me to try it here in NC, though we have more garnet sand than black sand

    • @Klesh
      @Klesh  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I was pushing the magnet back down into the ground I was thinking the same thing, I'm probably losing some gold. But, it's the way I did it, and that's what i'm running with. Good luck in NC with this! Thanks for watching! atb -KG

  • @WhoWouldWantThisName
    @WhoWouldWantThisName 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have seen some videos where people put a magnet under their high banker. The problem they all seemed to have was the black sand clogging up the sluice above the magnet. This created a sort of black sand bar or damn, disturbing the flow and ability for even regular mats to work right. It builds up so fast it's just too impractical. It does seem like a magnet might find a use in future sluice design though.

      Thank you, I seen the video where Ray sent you some pay dirt from Michigan, I live in Michigan also and soon be heading up to the mount pleasant area where he sent you the pay dirt but I will be doing the rivers and streams. If I find any evidence of gold from that area I will send you another bag like Ray did. I have a gold rush nugget bucket , and just bought that new gold claw pocket one for the final shake down. I might get a slice like yours, believe it or not we have some really fast moving rivers here in Michigan that I think would be perfect. Should I stay away from the folding slice boxes? People say the ones that don't fold are better, what do you think?

    • @Klesh

      Technically you can make a sluice box out of a piece of corrugated plastic pipe and it would work just fine with the correct water flow. Good luck in Michigan with the gold!

    Try working with this. A little more expense involved perhaps, but not really that much at all.
    A small high banker, with 12 volt battery operated pump. A $20 dollar magnet from Harbor freight. A sheet of thin steel plate about 2 Ft long to place over riffles (Height to be determined) Cookie sheet might do.
    This is why!
    I see a common mistake that nearly everybody makes in dealing with magnets.
    They are expecting the magnets to capture the magnetite and iron.
    My current experiments have to do with what I guess I would call the magnetic 'Zone'.
    If you hold a magnet over Black Sands and then lower it, the closer it gets to the sand, the less the sand weighs as it is affected by the power of the magnet.
    Indeed, it is possible to nearly 'zero' out the weight of the sand before the magnet is close enough to capture the sand and coat the magnet which will then need to be cleaned periodically.
    Instead, mount your magnets just above that 'Zero Weight' point, and let the current move the nearly weightless sands down the riffles and off the end.
    The lighter blond sands are all that's left to deal with, and a water flow over those can be adjusted to the very least that is needed. The specific weight of gold being so much greater, you should be able to keep your riffles clear of all but gold and garnets in most streams, and at a huge reduction in the flow of water passing over riffles, thus leaving the riffles clear, all the gold passing into the sluice box captured.
    You really do not know how much that is going to be, because you've been flushing it out to keep riffles clear of black sands.
    Take thin sheet metal, place heavy magnet at one end away from where you feed material, and it will magnetize whole sheet strong enough for your needs. As material approaches the upper end of sheet it will be affected by force of magnet, but as it travels down sluice closer to the position of the magnet, the force affecting it will increase, so you must have the magnet raised higher at that point to keep a steady, even force affecting the black sands all the way to end of sluice.
    Hope that's not too confusing.
    You need a 12 volt pump to control water flow to as little as may be to move the blond sands.
    That flow may be as low as 25% of normal. Incline of box may be less as well.
    Records show men working the gravels along a major river in my town a hundred years ago were taking .5 to 1.5 troy ounces of gold a day using rocker boxes and burlap trying to capture gold like talcum powder. Bet I can do better with this method.
    If all works out, I may jump to a 5" triple sluice by mid Summer
    Fortunately, it's only two hundred yards from my driveway! Wish me luck!

    • @Klesh
      @Klesh  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a really cool idea with the "magnetic zone" to eliminate the black sands. Must be cool living right near a place to find gold! Thanks for watching and the comment -KleshGuitars

    if u dont have access to a river but know some one who has taken out a pool and used alot of store bought sand that is a definet spot to pan for gold. i use a gold cube 4 stack to trap fine gold which eliminates the floating gold issue and i found more gold in my back yard in michigan where a pool used to be then in this entire vid remember any store bought sand could have gold in it cause most sand in store comes from California.

    I believe the reason you are only getting a small amount of flake gold is small particles hang onto the magnetized particles you are picking up and not larger pieces which would fall off. Get a better sluice that you can put more through which would help you find more gold quicker. Good luck.

    You should try your original spot to see if the magnet powers make a difference. Also your protective layer of jb weld may be interfering somehow. Possibly try a different protection method. Anyways great video, it would be awesome if magnet fishing gets dialled in for good gold.

    ok... two channels of aluminum that clip together however you want and the magnets attached however you want on the underside of one of the two pieces of aluminum.. now run it like any other sluice box. when your done running material, unclip the two pieces of aluminum, this separates the magnets from the black sands that serve as riffles for the gold to be caught in. Now you have the concentrate you want and much more gold.. your welcome

    must compare apples to apples, while your comparison is active stream to crevasse. I believe it would have been better to done crevasse with a shovel then around the area with the mag to see what the shovel missed.

      All gold in clear creek (in the gravel bars, inside or outside bend) will be flakes/flour gold. All is considered "float gold" regardless. Even deep in crevices I find mostly float gold, almost never anything bigger. Thanks for watching

    What could be extremely helpful to you is called a pin pointer. It acts as a metal detector. It is used with a metal detector it does just that it pin points you to the object being metal /Gold. Ive used them myself. Battery operated. There is no reason it can't work for you. It's a winner. You got to check out this guy hes 's called Aqua Chigger on TH-cam hes big into metel detecting mostly civil war artifacts, he has a lot of helpful ideas. He snorkles , magnet fishes he finds cell phones gold rings, civil war rifles, shells, civil war belt buckles , expensive sunglasses you name it. Got to check him out. He now is expending into other topics. And making a series in the UK. You could find more than gold out there. Artifacts of all kinds a lot went on out there. Do your homework. I would if I live out there. Me I'm looking for Indian arrowheads and artifacts, gold too so im paying attention to you. I live near where Indian tribes were known to live. I found things before I had an idea to look for them. I was just looking for interesting rocks. Ok wishing lots of luck. Will be checking in on you to see what you find....

    gold is diamagnetic which means a magnetic field repels it

    • @Klesh
      @Klesh  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I didn't realize this so I just did some research on it. Depending on impurities within it, some natural gold is weakly diamagnetic, however, if it contains manganese or other ferrous material as an impurity, it can also be paramagnetic. The gold I was able to retreive.... it's not repelled quickly enough to prevent it from becoming trapped in the magnetic black sand. It may also be a bit paramagnetic. At least that's my hypothesis on why I'm able to still get it trapped in the black sand. Thanks for watching! atb -KG

    • @jessevann7720
      @jessevann7720 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not that gold is magnetic. With gold and black sand if your mag grabs a bunch of sand some of the small flakes of gold get trapped in the sand.

    • @EUREKAGOLDSANDSDOTCO
      @EUREKAGOLDSANDSDOTCO 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      study up on the content of the gold in the streams your checking and stick to streams with gold that has a paramagnetic capability instead of diamagnetic?

  • @tonyennis1787
    @tonyennis1787 ปีที่แล้ว

    'splain the magnet please. Gold isn't a ferrous metal. The black sand evidently has iron in it, but where's the gold?

    • @Klesh
      @Klesh  ปีที่แล้ว

      The idea is the gold gets trapped in the wet black sand when using the magnet.

    Ok you said the gold isn’t worth much,,,, I get angry when I see people digging pay dirt and using a high banker , throwing material on the classifer that is set on a very steep angle. When they put it on the classifer and it falls off so fast there is no way they are not loosing gold,,,,,
    PEOPLE USE A LONG SLUICE 6FT AT LEAST..... LET THE WATER CLASSIFY YOUR MATERIAL....
