I personally would love to see more stuff like this. If there's a way for you to combine your personal studies with videos/tutorials/in-depth talks about them I'd surely join a patreon. I wouldn't mind complete breakdowns of a portrait study like this.
It blows my mind that someone with your skill level, technique and imagination has these kinds of doubts. It makes me start doubting about my journey which is kilometers behind from yours and make me believe I will never make it. then I remember how ridiculous it is for someone like you to have doubts, and that in a way we're dealing and fighting anxiety and fear that comes with that anxiety. It's all in the head, there is no reason whatsoever that you should doubt if you put the work in. I'm rooting for you! I need to say that to myself as well and believe it.
I edit for a living and the thing that really helps out when it comes to producing videos is to be organized before you start cutting it. You have to develop a road map for where you're going and what you're doing or else you will get overwhelmed. It also helps to understand how to use the time saving shortcuts built into the editing software. Being able to keyboard edit rather than relying totally on the mouse will really cut down the amount of time you're spending doing the actual cutting. A huge part of editing is knowing what to leave out, rather than what to put in. Good luck. Your art is very lovely.
thanks for those tips! I could def use to plan a little better, I use keyboard shortcuts but editing still takes me forever XD;;; especially the audio, editing out all the awkward pauses and "um"s XD

Your work is beautiful. Don't give up before you've started. Just because you left a full time job doesn't mean you can't go back to it. Keep at it for at least 6 months!

the thing about social media is that people tend to put their best face best work best everything forward and we tend not to see the background work that is needed.. it is easy to look at the end result and feel instantly intimidated that we’ll not be able to match up with that standard.. but you do you chris, don’t compare :) you’re doing great I love your art

YOU'RE AMAZING AT THIS! You have accumulated such a great and firm style: your pencil work is very detailed and you keep the shapes that add more structure to the shading for instance. You know how to shade, how to add gesture, etc, so keep going, you're doing great, i'm jelly on your abilities! You draw like a master back in the very old days, the way you use your pencil strokes and shapes!

I'm just really thankful. Take your time, go find your way of time management and doing things. You're already doing great, because most artists start with a really bad audio, and yours is great! Your art is beautiful and I enjoy watching you work/study. I'm learning a lot from you and your point of view. I started out as a watercolorist (about 41 years ago 😬), but, as things often do, my watercolors eventually changed to pastels (soft) then, finally to silk painting. I paint portraits on silk of people, pets, horses, water birds (ducks, heron, pelicans) and wildlife. After watching this video I think doing studies using the dyes on silk and paper is a great idea!

Being an artist full time puts so much pressure on things. What once didn't bug you or wasn't difficult becomes a mountain. There is no one but you to push yourself and that is scary. Also comparison starts coming in with how much other artists produce! You aren't alone in all these sentiments. I know you can do you once you find your footing and develope a solid routine.
I love the look of these and hooray for doing them in watercolor or gouache, I’d really like to see that!

I’ve had a similar dilemma. On one hand I know I have to keep working, on the other I get the feeing of detachment from what I’m doing: I feel like a printer, just going through the motions. It is important to know why we create but also to not overthink it.

with study videos I always find them super helpful (because of the tips and demonstration given) and motivation (especially when there's a series because then I feel motivated to join in and see how my studies develop with the youtubers') so yes for studies!!!

I Stumbled onto your channel while i was in a stump. I had been struggling with self-doubt since i dropped out of an art school because of financial issues. I was mad, confused and abit lost on where to go. Been procrastinating the past 6 months. Idk, i hated myself for not doing anything about it. But watching this kinda cheered me up abit , might try studying art again after so long. Thanks for making this vid. Will try to sorta try my best XD.

Hi Chris, I'm 29 and have only recently started to embrace the creative life. When I was starting, I was stuck for a while because I wasn't sure of the direction I wanted to go into... and because I'm already in my late twenties, I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to waste my time doing what wasn't for me. Ironically, I was wasting my time trying to ensure I wasn't going to waste time! because I wasn't starting anything or committing to anything due to all the doubt... The doubt that I might not be doing the right thing. In the end, I realised that nothing we do is ever a waste of time.. That if something feels right for me at the moment, after careful thinking, I should just go for it. I will never find out if I'm in the right or wrong direction until I actually walk the path. If I spend 2-5 years making mistakes, so what? I will have learned from it, it would have steered me to the right direction and 5 years is only like 5% of my lifetime.
Sorry, I'm not the best at expressing my thoughts, so I hope I make sense.
you're still young! XD never too old to try anything, I've single-handedly seen "bad artists" turn into really amazing artists within 2 years from dedicated practice and learning!! you can become a pro in your early thirties if you work hard enough (daily practice!) :) you'll never regret spending that time either, so you should go for it!

I’ve been using a useful technique I decided while doing a nude painting study using an oval and just matching the length of the face and drawing in the nose first specifically the nostrils.

Really loved how the sketches turned out! I start my sketches really similarly. I love how personal you are with your videos, sharing exactly what you're thinking and why. Also, I think some other artist youtube stockpile 2-3 videos, so they can seem like they're produced more frequently or at least on a schedule. Maybe if you don't feel like drawing, you can talk about your experiences with your art school or your past jobs over sketches like this or over thumbnail paintings for future drawings? I know people(including myself) love hearing about it!
I am working to get a backlog in of some clips so I can use them for when I don't feel like filming :D and I'm definitely planning on talking about my art school experience/past work experience! ^^ thanks so much!
Chris, have you thought about writing a drawing how to book? I see a lot of how to draw books and if I don't like the artwork I don't buy it because I don't want to draw like that. But I would definitely buy yours just for the artwork! Also if you did products with your artwork - like mugs or tshirts or calendars or notebooks - would love those!

If it makes you feel any better, I've worked in video games for 10 years and I still relate to what you say in this video, It's just so confusing from day to day.
I'm going to hit that subscribe button though because of how authentic you are compared to other youtubers. I think there is an audience out there for exactly what you want to do (when you figure that out) but it's going to take a lot of confidence to be able to get there.

Editing is the most daunting thing in the world. I finally set myself on a once a week schedule in order to stream line everything. TH-cam is definitely not my favorite part of creating.

I, too, have been starting the journey of phasing my life over from full time call center work to hopefully full time artist work. I have the same plan. TH-cam, Patreon, Website, etc. A few other ideas up my sleeve.
I see it has been a while since you posted this video so I am curious how the journey has gone thus far? I made steps to become a full time artist in 2017 but then had quite a few major life changes and am just now in a stable enough space to attempt that venture again. I'm hopeful.
There are so many great entrepreneurial artists to follow here on TH-cam and even Patreon.
Anywho... I started following you a little over a month ago, now, I believe. I ADORE your art style. Your clown/jester painting where you said you reworked the eye a lot is my favorite video thus far.

This is one of the most helpful drawing videos I have ever come across. Your style is beautiful, you inspire me so much. I understand completely about the whole video making, I currently am not uploading any videos, each video took me 3+ days to prep, film and edit and I just did not have it in me on top of a full time job. Hopefully this year I can cut down on work and focus more on art and videos. I hope this is ok to ask, but where do you get your reference photos from? The ones you used are so much more distinctive in expression than I could find so far on reference photo sites. Thanks so much for making your videos.
I use Pinterest to find my reference photos! you can start searching things like "portrait photography" and when you find an image you like, click into it, and fall into the rabbit hole lol there are lots of photos to comb over but you will find some gems in there ^^ Instagram is also great, find some models with faces you enjoy, they will have a ton of photos to work from! XD thanks for watching and best of luck with your endeavours as well!
Chris Hong Art from what I understand after a few years of making art, using pinterest references is fine for your personal sketchbook, as long as you don’t share publicly through social media, unless you have permission from the photographer. Otherwise you run the risk of incurring an expensive copyright violation. There are several copyright-free sites you can harvest images from, such as Pixabay, Unsplash, Morguefile, and Pexels. Paint My Photo is another one. It’s free but you have to join. There are also free references available on several Facebook sites like Free Reference Photos For Artists. Flickr has easily searchable images in the Public Domain. For portraits, the Sktchy app is excellent. Of course, you can also contact a photographer privately to get permission.
I notice several artists on instagram using photos from wherever they find them. Most often, the photographer is flattered and appreciates the mention but I think it’s prudent to ask permission first.
Photographers also appreciate credit for the use of their image. Some require it as part of the Creative License.
That said, I do love your style🤩. I’m going to try sketching with more straight lines like you do.

Others have already said similar things but hang in there! You are on completely new ground, of course you aren't as fast at editing as the other artists - editing is it's own world that takes some time to get used to and get an end result that fits your liking :)

We start to live to do art then later on after we start to sell it, we start to become this artist that does not live for art but to do art in order to live from it. when this happens we need to rethink everything that we are doing. to avoid a total disaster.

I've felt so uninspired and detached from my own art for a while now and when I watch your videos i get the urge to spent time in a drawing and become better.

The best thing she did here is showing reference photos. Very little people does that and many begginers thinks that they are doing it from imagination and this is the worst shit that begginer can think.
