  • The Honda Jazz! It's Honda's NEW answer to the small hatchback that has been around for years however there's one change you may not have been expecting - the new Jazz is only available as a hybrid! In the UK, we have a 1.5-litre petrol engine along with two electric motors, producing 109hp and a claimed economy of 62.8mpg! Now with a base spec price of £19,000, is the new Jazz a Hybrid beast?

Yep, most car reviewers fettishes about soft-touch "scratchy: plastics verge on the idiotic. My ten year old Jazz interior still scratch-free and solid. Most of us are more bothered if the thing will break down or not. Well done Tim.

A very well put together review. I've been driving my EX for a month and have 850 miles on it at 69 mpg overall. It's a superbly comfortable car. For those who say it's ugly - well so are many other cars. Once you're inside it, you don't see how it looks, so it's not an issue for me as I want a car that drives well rather than a "gym queen" car that you can pose with. Horses for courses!

We got the high spec version (no sunroof) 6 months ago... the best descritpion for this car is that it is a car that 'makes' you a more civilised driver (although the car is far from slow, quite the opposite, is actually one of the fastest small cars and very agile in traffic)... just to compare, the other car in the family is a 3-years Fiesta Vignale 1.5 diesel... it is a car with superb handling but if we had to choose, now the Jazz would come first (I also drove a Fiesta STLine recently - no, the stiffer suspension does not worth it although it is not bad at all, the Vignale indeed has a better setup overall). Complains from Jazz? well. some secondary things on the infotainment (but you can have such issues in every car maker, some of them are subjective): no date on the screen (Ford has the same issue - why they do not add date?), a few inconsistencies (eg the blutooth phone connection sometimes does not activate automatically) and when you use the navigator and there is incomning phonecall you hear in parallel phone and navigation instructions which is really stupid - we have reported those to Honda and they said they may make an update). The ONLY annoying thing (to me at least) is that the lane departure system is sensitive and you can not set it off permanently, you have to set it off (if you want) every time you start the car - I guess this has to do with safetty points (rubbish...!), otherwise is stupid... . Otherwise quality is very good (no noises or anything), materials are not bad (seats are great!) but they are NOT in par with european competition. The really impressive thing is how smooth the transition from EV to engine drive is made (driver feels nothing!), the Honda engineers are miracle makers (I never had a Honda before, so I am not a 'fan' or anything). My only suggestion: being used to drive european cars, I would like the chassis to be a little stiffer, but I quess that in a hybrid with double engines and batteries etc , weight is a tricky factor especially in a small car... . Last but not least, the Jazz is NOT cheap to buy but if you consider the whole 'package' as well as its roominess (best in small class segment and even better than most b-class models) and its legendary (hopefully) reliability, then it is a great value despite its initial ptice tag.

Bit late to this review but I think you've nailed it. I've had an EX since October 2021 and it's a great car - in fact it's all the car you need. My overall mpg is 57 and that is worked out manually rather than with the car's computer. I do a lot of short stuff in cold weather and that brings my mpg down. Over 60 easily obtainable with a different driving profile. I've subscribed.

When we wanted to replace our Toyota Yaris with a new Yaris more than a year and a half ago, we also looked at the Honda Jazz purely out of curiosity.
First impression: How spacious, compared to the Yaris! Especially in the back seat. And how practical: lots of cup holders, storage compartments, and especially those magic seats! The Jazz is BRILLIANT 👍 🤗
We made an extensive test drive with both cars and then the decision was quickly made: We have been driving the Jazz EX very satisfied for 17 months now. Average consumption over nearly 17 months (tracked on Spritmonitor): 61.9 mpg. 😄

We bought one: an EX. Yes: you do look like a district nurse driving one but the drivetrain is a masterpiece. No gears, other than the final drive lock-up when the engine's summoned to rev into its maximum torque 'zone' to drive that one single (higher) gear.
It's an EV with a Honda generator under the bonnet. Very, very clever. And simple. And once your average kilowatt at home is 51 pence after the 1st October Price Cap Revision you'll even make the smug BEV brigade look very foolish 🙂. A Honda that Soichiro would love.....

If you drive in the middle of the night and plod fetter the acceleration, owners will know how that works to get battery charge up, coast down hills , b mode to stop or slow at roundabouts i can get 80mpg on average on my 22 mile journey to work and in the summer i have got 94 mpg. On the way home in peak time, i take the motor way home and a little more in a hurry and it will be around 60 to 65 mpg

    • @JoePeddie
